And another smackdown of Asshole Republicans. This time in Oregon

Oregon Republicans barred from running for re-election after boycotting votes

Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade has determined that Republicans who have repeatedly boycotted legislative sessions will not be allowed to run for re-election, reportedThe Oregonian on Tuesday.

“Griffin-Valade wrote that she views voter-approved Measure 113 as disqualifying Oregon lawmakers who received 10 or more unexcused absences during the 2023 legislative session from running for reelection in 2024,” reported Jamie Goldberg. “That was clearly what voters intended … Ballot language and media coverage all communicated to voters that the punishment for absences would impact lawmakers in their next term, not a later one.”

Although Democrats control majorities in the state legislature, Oregon has special rules that require a supermajority of lawmakers be present for a quorum to conduct business. As a consequence, the Republican minority has power to block consideration of bills on everything from abortion to climate action by simply walking out of the Capitol and not attending the voting sessions, and they have done so repeatedly.

Tensions have flared up over this practice; in 2019, then-Gov. Kate Brown threatened to have state police round up and retrieve absent Republican lawmakers, prompting state Sen. Brian Boquist to threaten to shoot troopers who tried to do so.

According to the report, nine total Republican lawmakers would be barred from running under Measure 113, including state Senate Minority Leader Tim Knopp, as well as Boquist, who changed his party affiliation to independent in 2021. Six of those lawmakers, including Knopp and Boquist, have only one year left in their term.

Another Paul Owen hybrid with wonderful purple. One thing I love about most of my Owen hybrids is that they are mid to late so I have blooms in August. And they rebloom so I can have flowers into Sept.

Malbec daylily

My favorite double. For me, almost 100% of the flowers are double which is high. This shows how some interesting genetic changes have been used to get new daylilies. First is a typical thing done in many flowering plants - diploid to tetraploid. Doubling the number of chromosomes usually ends up with a much more vigorous plant. Many of Paul Owen plants are tetraploid with scapes almost like baseball bats. The other thing is to double the number of petals/sepals. Usually the second set is stunted as show here.

Hampton Magic daylily

Mempis is one of my most complex flowers. So much depth and detail and colors, all subtlely mixed in a wonderful way. The petals are huge with sepals discretely hidden behind.

Well, a bunch of financial institutions, including one very familiar to me, got slapped down by the Securities & Exchange Commission and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) today.

Banks hit with $549 million in fines for use of Signal, WhatsApp to evade regulators’ reach

U.S. regulators on Tuesday announced a combined $549 million in penalties against Wall Street firms that failed to maintain electronic records of employee communications.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced charges against 11 firms for “widespread and longstanding failures” to maintain records, including by allowing employees to use unsupervised side channels such as messaging apps WhatsApp and Signal, the regulator said.

Wells Fargo was the biggest U.S. bank cited Tuesday in the sweeping actions.

U.S. regulators on Tuesday announced a combined $549 million in penalties against Wells Fargo and a raft of smaller or non-U.S. firms that failed to maintain electronic records of employee communications.

The Securities and Exchange Commission disclosed charges and $289 million in fines against 11 firms for “widespread and longstanding failures” in record-keeping, while the Commodity Futures Trading Commission also said it fined four banks a total of $260 million for failing to maintain records required by the agency.

I read the article and the SEC and CFTC press releases and this specifically refers to the use of WhatsApp and Signal by traders. This is completely unsurprising to me.

It’s another day, so The Guardian weighs in on the latest. (today)

New Orleans archbishop ignored board findings on clerics accused of abuse

And of course, claiming bankruptcy in the richest private organisation in the world.

A board which helps the Roman Catholic archbishop of New Orleans, Gregory Aymond, evaluate abuse allegations against priests and deacons in six cases found clergymen to be credibly accused only for Aymond to ignore the findings and conceal them from the public, a Guardian investigation has found.

Aymond’s management of the cases in question as the leader of the US’s second-oldest archdiocese is outlined in a memorandum which attorneys for victims of clerical sexual abuse prepared and handed to law enforcement in the latter part of last year.
‘My prayerful support’: how the New Orleans archbishop hid ‘credibly accused’ abusers
Read more

It exposes the latest damaging revelations in a decades-long scandal at the 230-year-old archdiocese, which has been shown to have gone to extreme lengths to cover up for a confessed child abuser. The scandal mirrors similar events involving the Catholic church elsewhere in the US and across the world.

The 48-page memo alludes to secret internal archdiocesan records that were handed over after the local church sought federal bankruptcy protection in 2020 in response to a wave of abuse-related lawsuits. Because confidentiality rules guide the bankruptcy, both church officials and advocates for molestation victims have worked to keep the memo hidden from public view.

A hidden world of sex abuse and exploitation by men working as “spiritual healers” has been uncovered by BBC Arabic.

Spiritual healing, also known as “Quranic healing”, is a popular practice in the Arab and Muslim world. It is mostly women who visit healers - believing that they can solve problems and cure illness by expelling evil spirits known as “jinn”.

Testimonies gathered by the BBC from 85 women, over a period of more than a year, named 65 so-called healers in Morocco and Sudan - two countries where such practices are particularly popular - with accusations ranging from harassment to rape.

We spent months speaking to NGOs, courts, lawyers and women, gathering and verifying stories of abuse. An undercover reporter who underwent treatment with one such healer for our investigation, was herself inappropriately touched before fleeing the scene.

A victory for reason.

A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a 2021 Connecticut law that eliminated the state’s longstanding religious exemption from childhood immunization requirements for schools, colleges and day care facilities.

The decision comes about a year and a half after a lower court judge dismissed the lawsuit challenging the contentious law, which drew protests at the state Capitol.

“This decision is a full and resounding affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of Connecticut’s vaccine requirements. Vaccines save lives — this is a fact beyond dispute,” Democratic Attorney General William Tong said in a statement. “The legislature acted responsibly and well within its authority to protect the health of Connecticut families and stop the spread of preventable disease.”

The plaintiffs, We the Patriots USA Inc. and others, had argued that Connecticut violated religious freedom protections by removing the exemption. The 2021 law, they said, demonstrates a hostility to religious believers and jeopardizes their rights to medical freedom and child rearing.

Two days ago (BBC)

A grieving mother and her lawyer have been targeted by an extreme campaign of abuse after suing a conspiracy theory newspaper which falsely claimed her son died from a Covid vaccine.

The Irish Light repeatedly abused Edel Campbell online and its supporters have threatened her lawyer with “execution”.

Conspiracy theorists worldwide have used dozens of tragic deaths to spread vaccine misinformation.

This case is thought to be the first where a relative has sued.

The Irish Light included Ms Campbell’s son, Diego Gilsenan, and 41 others in an article last year which suggested the “untested and dangerous” Covid vaccine was to blame for the deaths. In fact, the BBC has been told Diego had taken his own life in August 2021, aged 18, and had not been vaccinated.

(much more about violent conspiracy liar conservatives at the link, including Elno’s Twitter promoting the owner of the newspaper)

The Irish Light: Woman abused by paper which falsely said vaccine killed her son

Conservatives: Lie about the mother and child, threaten to kill her solicitor and employees.
Liberals: How about not?
Centrist: Why can’t we find a reasonable middle?

so next week at the earliest

“The fourth criminal case involving Donald Trump is likely to come to a head next week, with the district attorney in Atlanta expected to take the findings from her election interference investigation to a grand jury,” the New York Times reports.

“The Georgia investigation may be the most expansive legal challenge yet to the efforts that Mr. Trump and his advisers undertook to keep him in power after he lost the 2020 election. Nearly 20 people are known to have been told that they could face charges as a result of the investigation, which Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Ga., has pursued for two and a half years.”

and let’s all just gloss over that fourth criminal case part like it’s ordinary

and while almost 20 people are in the crosshairs, remember this too:

“taking away my First Amendment rights,”

If this Charles Manson defense is all he has, he’s headed for prison. (Charlie did not personally kill anyone and he was actually farther from the scene than Trump was on 1-6. Too bad for Charlie and repugs that his lawyers did not think to characterize his verbal instructions to the killers as protected free speech.)
People v. Manson

The prosecution contended that, while Manson never directly ordered the murders, his ideology constituted an overt act of conspiracy.

Hmmm…..maybe Trump is subconsciously expressing a desire to flee the country?

Donald Trump admitted that he would like to leave the country and live overseas.

Trump, who has frequently expressed disdain for America and Americans, made the confession during a rally in New Hampshire on Tuesday as he griped about the charges against him and lamented ever getting into politics.

“I could have been relaxing at Mar-a-Lago or in the south of France ― which I would prefer to being in this country, frankly.”

Dubai UAE would be his best option. No extradition treaty, and I think he has a golf property there already? In any event, it’s full of Russian hookers, so he should have no problem finding Wife #4.

At this point, this might well be the best outcome. His cult might finally see him for the coward he really is, once he abandons them.

Sure, he wouldn’t get his comeuppance - but look at it this way; He’s old and unhealthy and any punishment we could give him wouldn’t last long enough anyway.

i wish everyone would stop second guessing whether Willis knows what she’s doing.

why it’s taking as long as it’s taking (gee so much evidence, so many targets)

why did they put up barriers if nothing’s gonna happen (an abundance of planning and caution)

why two grand juries (couldnt she do it right the first time)

as i understand it:

Georgia grand jury system. The DA has to convene one grand jury to collect and hear evidence, but must seek an indictment from a second, separate grand jury. She spent the better part of the last year collecting evidence via the first grand jury. Now she’s presenting her case to the second grand jury and asking them to issue an indictment.

it’s not ‘taking too long’. they’re ready when the case is ready.

sounds like right on schedule.

in my totally uninformed opinion, it’s gonna be enormous

Your point? The Secret Service can protect Trump in a supermax. He gets 23 hours of solitary and 1 hour of time where he can interact with other prisoners. BOP guards can be supplemented with Secret Service.

Alternatively, you can subject him to house arrest - where he’s not allowed visitors, no internet access, media access, etc. but the Secret Service maintains the security cordon.

He can live at a Bedminster outhouse.

since we’re spitballing here

house arrest doesnt have to mean a property he currently owns.
one could be purchased or otherwise acquired for the purpose.

also, certain military installations are possibilities. this has been discussed many times as it could also limit the ability to protest close to where he is.

‘security’ is not a logistical issue here.

Another idea I saw floated was that he could get an entire wing of an underutilized federal prison to himself. The war of attrition continues.

Vladimir Putin has been forced to deploy almost half his mothballed old tanks and armoured vehicles from a major Siberian open-air depot after suffering huge losses in Ukraine.

Some 1,570 rusting war machines have been moved from their Siberian dump and restored to service for the Russian president’s war against Ukraine, say reports.

More than 40 per cent of the 3,840 tanks and military vehicles shown on satellite pictures from Google Earth at Vagzhanovo military equipment depot before the war have now been taken out of storage, it is claimed.

Jim Trusty and John Rowley, who represented Trump with respect to the documents and January 6 grand juries and who both quit when the first indictment was filed.

Evan Corcoran, who previously represented Trump, but was forced to withdraw after Trump lied to him about the location of government documents at Mar-a-Lago and induced him to draft a false declaration saying that a diligent search had been conducted, according to the documents indictment.

Christina Bobb, a relatively inexperienced lawyer who has not entered her appearance on any cases, but who signed the false declaration drafted by Corcoran and testified about it to the grand jury.

Christina Bobb’s TV appearances also haven’t helped Trump’s legal cause. (View video here)

John Irving, who represents recently added documents co-defendant Carlos De Oliveira. Irving previously represented Stephen Miller, Rep. Scott Perry, and the aforementioned Mitchell, a lawyer on the infamous call with Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger.

Tim Parlatore, who previously represented Trump and currently represents Bernie Kerik, a witness before the January 6 grand jury and former NYC police commissioner.

Chris Kise, a former Florida solicitor general who was paid $3 million to leave his position at the aforementioned Foley & Lardner and who now represents Trump in the documents case as well as the civil suit in New York.

Todd Blanche, who represented Trump’s advisor Boris Epshteyn before the grand juries, and now represents Trump in all three pending criminal cases.

John Lauro, who previously represented Christina Bobb and Alina Habba before the grand jury, and who now represents Trump in the January 6 case. His TV interviews over the past week about the January 6 indictment have been such a disasterclass that the government is already citing his comments in court filings (check out the below video for an example).

That doesn’t include those lawyers facing criminal charges separately, like Rudy or Eastman. It also doesn’t include Alina Habba whose notoriety led to Trump facing $1 million sanctions in her failed “RICO” suit against Hillary. That led her to withdraw as “counsel” to take up mantle of legal adviser to Trump’s PAC (which is likely facing separate money laundering investigations by Smith).

Sinema is deeply unpopular, and if she goes independent, the Democratic Party will spare no expense to highlight just how shitty she’s been as far as upholding values Democratic voters care about. She’s more likely at this point to draw off Kari Lake voters who want less crazy but like how Sinema has handicapped the Biden administration.

Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus’ teachings as ‘weak’

npr.org

Well, Gosh Russ! When you and your fellow pulpit pimps endlessly recited Republican Party Talking Points over the past 45 years and you gladly embraced a morally bankrupt asshole who broke all 10 Commandments and lives the 7 Deadly Sins you were too stupid to figure out this would be the end result!

What is he saying? Moore spoke to All Things Considered’s Scott Detrow about what he thinks the path forward is for evangelicalism in America.

On why he thinks Christianity is in crisis:

It was the result of having multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching — “turn the other cheek” — [and] to have someone come up after to say, “Where did you get those liberal talking points?” And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, “I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,” the response would not be, “I apologize.” The response would be, “Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.” And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we’re in a crisis.

On how he begins to address the issues he sees:

I don’t think we fix it by fighting a war for the soul of evangelicalism. I really don’t think we can fix it at the movement level. And that’s one of the reasons why, when I’m talking to Christians who are concerned about this, my counsel is always “small and local.” I think we have to do something different and show a different way. And I see in history every time that something renewing and reviving has happened, it’s happened that way. It’s happened at a small level with people simply refusing to go with the stream of the church culture at the time.

On how much he thinks politics is part of the problem:

I think that the roots of the political problem really come down to disconnection, loneliness, sense of alienation. Even in churches that are still healthy and functioning, regular churchgoing is not what it was a generation ago, in which the entire structure of the week was defined by the community.

Uh, Russ baby folks are walking out of churches and never going back because they reject the Republican Party bullshit that comes out of the pulpit every Sunday and Wednesday.

Russell Moore is of course 40 years too late with his critiques.

He should have pointed out where Reagan was leading American Christianity, when Moore was a young man.

Everything Trump has wrought is a direct result of Evangelical leadership scheming during the Nixon era on how to influence the next wave of national politics.

It was planned and executed.

If Moore decries “tribalism”, then he really needs to look back to those Nixon years and retell truthfully what happened.

We (American society) have been on this path since the very early 20th century, when fundamentalism became a rallying cry in American Christianity (at least certain Protestant corners.)

The Fundamentals lays this out. It was the document that became the rallying cry for conservative American Christians, a kind of a call to engage in a counter-modern movement.

Moore can put a fucking sock in it. He’s still very much a part of the Evangelical Industrial Complex. Hell, he’s the editor in chief of “Christianity Today,” the house organ of the EIC. He could use that bully pulpit to call out his fellow Evangelicals, but he doesn’t have the balls to burn down the house. And that’s what needs to happen now, since American Evangelicalism is aligning itself with one of the worst people ever to be on a political stage. And not just *align*, heck, those people *worship* Dipshit Donny. Of course they think Jesus is weak!

No sympathy here—if he wants any admiration, he can start by calling people out in his own house organ, instead of running to NPR.

Mostly it was Ronnie Raygun pushing his Star Wars stupidity and his saber rattling.
Combined with big names like Carl Sagan bringing the idea of Nuclear Winter into the mainstream and the whole Pershing II IRBM nightmare in United States Army Europe the time was ripe for those movies.

I joined the Army in 1982 mainly because I expected him to start WWIII and I would have rather died fighting than from fallout.

Ronnie Raygun being an old hollywierd hack was particularly vulnerable to that kind of propaganda and it lead to him being able to step back from the brink.

Today’s electoral-vote.com

To start, there are two new polls of the still-mostly-hypothetical race, one from Emerson and one from Noble Predictive Insights. And they both have three rather significant findings. The first is that the Democrats’ presumptive nominee, Rep. Ruben Gallego, is a slight favorite to win in all conditions. The second is that Gallego does better when Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) is in the race, as she draws more Republican votes than Democratic. And the third is that Gallego does best when Kari Lake is the Republican candidate.

Main difference is that English saw Scotland as a rebellious colony and treated it as such, the Union saw the fallen Confederacy as prodigal child that needed to be brought back into the family fold.

America was simply worn out and tired of the bloodshed and wanted to put it all behind us.

Framing and matting of photos and artwork makes a huge difference in what you are trying to emphasize in the artwork itself. That’s a pretty dramatic change, mostly because of how dark the painting is, and that the gold frame competes with the luminous light coming in from the window. By changing to a darker frame, you emphasize the light in the window.

I’ve seen similar things with my own art.

Who is sneaking fentanyl across the southern border? Hint: it’s not the migrants

NOGALES, ARIZONA — We know that illicit fentanyl is flowing into the U.S. from Mexico. Yet we rarely hear from the couriers who smuggle most of it through legal ports of entry. This is one of their stories.

Just before midnight on Aug. 4, 2021, Haley tried to cross the border from Mexico back into Arizona, where she lived. She was carrying 1,000 fentanyl pills inside her body.

“That was the first time I’ve ever done it,” Haley says. “It was just a sudden decision that I made at the last moment.”

At the time, Haley was struggling with addiction to methamphetamine. She’d lost her job during the COVID-19 pandemic and then lost custody of her three children. (Haley, 32, asked not to use her last name in order to protect her children’s privacy.)

When a man she knew offered her a chance to make $500, Haley took it.

Not what the fuckers at Faux want people to know, now is it?

This is a point I really like to make. When Melania and Ivanka had their boobs enlarged, that was gender-affirming care. When Trump had his eyes done and hair plugs put in, that was gender-affirming care. Their bodies didn’t match their gender expression, so they had surgery to correct it.

That is fine as long as gender conforms to biological sex.

This is my point. In their minds, their sex matches their gender, yet they *still* feel the need to use surgery to change their outward gender expression. What I’m saying is that cis people doing plastic surgery is absolutely the same as trans people. But Republicans support Trump getting hair plugs but decry Eliot Page affirming his own gender. It’s a glaring flaw in their worldview.

Looks like another Chinese real estate developer - Country Garden - might be in deep shit, joining Evergrande.

The latest major industry player to get into trouble is Country Garden, once China’s largest developer.

Shares in the construction giant have plunged 16% in Hong Kong since Tuesday, after reports by Reuters and Chinese media that it missed interest payments on two US dollar-denominated bonds. Several of Country Garden’s yuan-denominated bonds were suspended from trading in Shanghai and Shenzhen on Tuesday after they dropped by more than 20%.

Country Garden did not respond to a request from CNN for comment.

On Tuesday, state-owned media outlet paper.cn, citing an anonymous company source, reported that Country Garden suffered “temporary liquidity pressure” due to deteriorating sales and a difficult refinancing environment. It was “actively” seeking funds to resolve the debt crunch and would protect the legitimate rights of creditors, the person was quoted as saying.

Although Country Garden still has a 30-day grace period before it can be labeled as a defaulter, the collapse in market confidence shows investors are worried about the company’s future.

Sure, he wouldn’t get his comeuppance - but look at it this way; He’s old and unhealthy and any punishment we could give him wouldn’t last long enough anyway.

Trump lies about everything. I am confident he has no desire in living elsewhere outside his comfort zone. It’s not as though he speaks any language other than English or has any interest in exploring other cultures or cuisines. His only interest is in emulating authoritarians elsewhere and installing a similar regime here.

when dangermom was in rehab after the hospital last year there was a very nice doctor/PA team attending to her.

it was clear to me we needed someone closer because her GP had just retired and that trip was too long for her anyway.

so we switched to this PA who is 4 minutes from home. So convenient.

at 94, dangermom is in great physical health.

the PA repeats this every time we visit: do everything you can to stay out of the hospital. You won’t survive, and if by chance you do, you will not ever recover like a younger person.

for dangermom, that mostly means two things: always use the walker and eat well.

Who was the majority group in that scenario?

The ‘45 (as it’s usually referred to in Scotland) was the last gasp of the Hundred Years War between the French and the English which kicked off in the 1300s. By the 1600s it had devolved, thanks to Henry VIII, into a religious schism, Protestantism vs. Catholicism, with lots of supposed Christian folks shooting at each other in God’s name.

Scotland had melded with England’s monarchy when Protestant James VI was the last man standing in the race to find a successor for the crown of England after Elizabeth I karked it without issue of her loins, and then later when Scotland had bankrupted itself in the Darien Venture the Union of Parliaments happened in 1707 hence the United Kingdom we keep on talking about today. The Stuarts fronted up a damp squib rebellion after the House of Hanover took over the monarchy in 1715 with support from Catholic and Monarchist France, from whence came Bonnie Prince Charlie and a lot of French money to rouse the clans in 1745. As it turned out broadswords and the best songs were no match for metalled roads and artillery (see also Native American tribes vs. US Army passim).

Wife and I caught him a few years back at the Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Cleveland. We were doing a “let’s see them before they die” concert summer (caught James Taylor that summer also). They put on a great show.

This was years and years ago :D Heart was the opening act and wasn’t that just a hell of a night? Ann & Nancy were a hella combo on thier own…

cribbed from a couple of randos to make a list

There is NO pro-life movement. There is only a movement to force women to carry to term.

A pro-life movement would support:

expanded medicaid
expanded child care
expanded parental leave
prosecution of dead beat dads
meal programs for schools
family planning resources
sex education
eradication of poverty

and regulation of guns and decisive actions towards ending kids being slaughtered in classrooms (and Americans more broadly)

It’s non-white but especially brown people being killed. That’s what’s important to them. It always has been. But ever since he got his pay out for being crippled he’s worked to make sure no one else ever will. He really is that evil.

There are lots of slimy republicans out there.

Abbot puts 99.99% of them to rest - he’s far more wicked than any of them.

If there were actual justice in the universe, he would be hanged from the same gallows, using the same rope, that the hanged the Nazi criminals after the Nuremberg trials.

re: #287 Nojay UK

Thanks. The problem with the comparison from earlier is it eventually because whites vs blacks, not North vs South.

Twitter’s initial resistance to complying with the warrant resulted in a federal judge holding the company in contempt and levying a $350,000 fine. The federal court of appeals in Washington, D.C., recently upheld that fine.

I mean, besides the fact that Ronald Reagan was president….?

Able Archer. In November ‘83, NATO had a set of nuclear war exercises, a simulation, that were just a little too realistic, setting off panic in the USSR.

Thanks. The problem with the comparison from earlier is it eventually because whites vs blacks, not North vs South.

It’s notable when talking about that period that racism—and race really can’t be separated from it’s immediate use to classify superior and inferior types—wasn’t as firmly-rooted in a singular whiteness shared by Europeans. The Scots and the Irish…and the Welsh…were viewed as backwards unassimilated clades that were distinct, and each time they asserted their autonomy (or simply did something inconvenient, like try and continue their language) the explanations and descriptions of their actions would incorporate the kind of dehumanizing descriptors we’d now associate with modern racism against nonwhites.

Like, there’s a period where you can see the European powers begin to test out rhetoric of dehumanization—borrowing both from Greek philosophers and Biblical texts to make it seem coherent with sources of truth—as they begin to solidify their borders and forcibly create modern nations. The tropes that become racist and the tropes that become “white trash” emerge from the same need of the aristocracy (and the early nationalism-fostering institutions both under monarchs and republics) to strip rights from groups and individuals they were forcing to operate within the needs of the state.

Rhetoric that you’d use for your Slav slaves, or the Jews, or the Roma/Sinti, or for some provincial group that didn’t want to be the periphery of your empire (like the Bretons and Basques or Scots) is version 1.0 to the version 2.0 deployed when African slavery and colonization of the Americas created an opportunity for expansion contingent on denying the humanity of black and indigenous people.

That’s the problem with talking about all of this from a modern perspective: we are all using a poisonous bad faith construct as our vocabulary, and to a large extent the racism have “made” modern race distinction true through establishing norms and backing them with violence. We’re now in a kind of Foucault’s Boomerang scenario where the same tropes are so ingrained in our language that the tropes are once again applied to white Americans to other white Americans, as part of de-legitimizing them.

[my perspective as a leftist that’s still a bit liberal is that the modern “right” is illegitimate because it’s positions are both cruel and ineffective, not because they’re dumb or rural or inbred etc,]

Tough choice between Kanye West and Roseanne.

RFK Jr. to unite Americans. The right-wing fuckups and the far-left fuckups working together to fuck everything up.

Sadly, she didn’t make it much past her prime and died still beautiful. Dead at 49 from chain smoking. She was a hardcore addict and it killed her.

According to Wiki, she had to have coronary bypass surgery in 1983, at about the age of 35. Damn.

Thanks. There is now a trail to the botanical garden that switchbacks up the hill for an even better view. I like this spot ever since the stonemasons convention came to Ventura and they conducted a master build (see photo).
Regarding Andreas: Count me in! But truth be told I like the place across the parking lot because it has very good chowder and mixed drinks. (See photo 2 of Ventura Harbor

As long as we’re talking about television treatments of old wars…

For both Highlander: the series and Outlander, Culloden was a hugely formative episode in the lead characters’ backstory. Duncan and Jamie would be very different men had they not experienced this.

(Duncan probably died there, but it didn’t take. Jamie survived only because Claire had warned him how it would go and told him to stay at the periphery.)
