A Landmark Discovery in Human Evolution?

Science • Views: 3,569

Next week at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History, an international team of scientists will unveil a complete, 47-million year old fossil found in Germany that may be one of the most important anthropological discoveries ever made: a primate creature that could be the common ancestor of all monkeys, apes, and humans.

Anthropologists have long believed that humans evolved from ancient ape-like ancestors. Some 50 million years ago, two ape-like groups walked the Earth. One is known as the tarsidae, a precursor of the tarsier, a tiny, large-eyed creature that lives in Asia. Another group is known as the adapidae, a precursor of today’s lemurs in Madagascar.

Based on previously limited fossil evidence, one big debate had been whether the tarsidae or adapidae group gave rise to monkeys, apes and humans. The latest discovery bolsters the less common position that our ancient ape-like ancestor was an adapid, the believed precursor of lemurs.

Philip Gingerich, president-elect of the Paleontological Society in the U.S., has co-written a paper that will detail next week the latest fossil discovery in Public Library of Science, a peer-reviewed, online journal.

“This discovery brings a forgotten group into focus as a possible ancestor of higher primates,” Mr. Gingerich, a professor of paleontology at the University of Michigan, said in an interview.

Saving children from anti-science parents.....
Judge rules family can't refuse chemo for boy

A Minnesota judge ruled Friday that a 13-year-old cancer patient must be evaluated by a doctor to determine if the boy would benefit from restarting chemotherapy over his parents' objections.

In a 58-page ruling, Brown County District Judge John Rodenberg found that Daniel Hauser has been "medically neglected" by his parents, Colleen and Anthony Hauser, and was in need of child protection services.
.........
The judge wrote that Daniel has only a "rudimentary understanding at best of the risks and benefits of chemotherapy. ... he does not believe he is ill currently. The fact is that he is very ill currently."
.........
Daniel was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and stopped chemotherapy in February after a single treatment. He and his parents opted instead for "alternative medicines" based on their religious beliefs.
........
Doctors have said Daniel's cancer had up to a 90 percent chance of being cured with chemotherapy and radiation. Without those treatments, doctors said his chances of survival are 5 percent.

Daniel's parents have been supporting what they say is their son's decision to treat the disease with nutritional supplements and other alternative treatments favored by the Nemenhah Band.

The Missouri-based religious group believes in natural healing methods advocated by some American Indians.

Two quotes stand out to me, showing the political side of scientific research:

Scientists won't necessarily agree about the details either. "Lemur advocates will be delighted, but tarsier advocates will be underwhelmed" by the new evidence, says Tim White, a paleontologist at the University of California, Berkeley. "The debate will persist."

and

According to Prof. Gingerich, the fossilized remains are of a young female adapid. The skeleton was unearthed by collectors about two years ago and has been kept tightly under wraps since then, in an unusual feat of scientific secrecy.

Internecine squabbles and jealous secrecy don't serve the reputation of science well. This stuff plays right into the hands of creationists. It's probably unavoidable, with scientists being human an all.

One would hope that the Creationists who rant and lie on and on about Evolution being an unchallenged dogma would wise up as scientists continue to learn and advance the science behind it. Darwin's theory was merely a starting point, and science has stepped up to the plate and continued the learning process he began.

However, I don't expect Creationists to stop making it up as they go along and stop trying to impose their dogma on public school science classes. Given their track record, I'd be a fool to believe they will cease and desist.

Important finds like this are always kept secret, until the research can be properly completed and documented. It has nothing to do with politics or "jealous secrecy" -- it's done to be responsible, so that news doesn't leak out before they're sure about what they have.

And scientific debates are not "internecine squabbles."

re: #98 Land Shark

One would hope that the Creationists who rant and lie on and on about Evolution being an unchallenged dogma would wise up as scientists continue to learn and advance the science behind it. Darwin's theory was merely a starting point, and science has stepped up to the plate and continued the learning process he began.

However, I don't expect Creationists to stop making it up as they go along and stop trying to impose their dogma on public school science classes. Given their track record, I'd be a fool to believe they will cease and desist.

I'd believe Obama to stop campaigning and begin being a leader before I'd believe the Creationists started acting rational.

Folks who are determined to keep their children from getting medical care ought to move to Mexico and move into a cardboard slum. The government there shows very little interest in medical care for children of the peasant class.

Important finds like this are always kept secret, until the research can be properly completed and documented. It has nothing to do with "jealous secrecy" -- it's done to be responsible, so that news doesn't leak out before they're sure about what they have.

And scientific debates are not "internecine squabbles."

Yeah, I guess the Manhattan Project was just an internecine squabble that ended with a bang!

I remain amazed that the creationists see this as an either or debate. It confuses the issue of finding truth too. My daughter asked me if we were creationists because we believed in God? I was stunned because we have always taught that faith in things unseen and evidence of things seen should be compatible and if not then we (mortals) must be missing something in our understanding of the whole picture.

For a person of faith to blindly refuse to consider what is plainly laid out before us is to deny knowledge and intelligence that is a blessing from God. I don't see why anyone professing a strong faith would choose to voluntarily limit their knowledge. Life has paradoxes, mysteries and missing data - to assume anyone can know it all right now is hubris for religion and science alike.

I'm somewhat interested in the common ancestor for Old World and New World "monkeys". New World "monkeys" are very different; swinging by their tails, for a start. The word "monkey" really shouldn't apply.

One large environmental difference is that in the New World, there was the Amazon, which has been in Brasil continually for dozens of millions of years. In the Old Word, Africa's jungle belt is a lot smaller and has been subject to erosion during ice ages.

Also I am told that the New World didn't have as wide a variety of birds.

So in the New World, monkeys adapted to life in trees, taking niches tropical birds would in the Old World. In the Old World, monkeys might have to get onto the ground every now and again.

Both he and his son won the Medal of Honor, Teddy for the Spanish-American War, and his son for WWII.

And, if you're looking for a good read, check out The River of Doubt by Candice Millard. Mainly about his last expedition, to Brazil, in search of the route of an unknown river, it also serves as a full-fledged biography, using the expedition as backdrop and organizing theme.

There's a great statue of Teddy astride a magnificent stallion in front of the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, with aboriginal peoples at his feet.

If you're ever in the area, also see his summer home in Oyster Bay, Long Island. It's festooned with animal heads and skins from his hunting expeditions and military trophies, as well as the suit of Samurai armor presented to him by the Japanese government for negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize for that, B/T/W.

Thanks.

I live in Manhattan, and can't wait to finally bring my soon to be 2 year old to the museum. When I was a little older than he is now, I was afraid to walk under the hanging whale!

I love that museum. It was the only way people saw those animals up close.

Today, we can shoot them with cameras.

re: #194 Ben Hur

The Puerto Ricans and the Cubans have a longstanding ethnic rivalry going on.

Here's the joke illustrating it:

Two automobiles have a horrendous head-on collision way out in the countryside in Puerto Rico. It takes the cops several hours to get to the scene. They discover the two wrecked cars entangled with each other, and blood splattering the interiors, smashed windows, etc., but there are no bodies inside. In fact, they can't find any casualties at all.

They look down the road, and see an old Puerto Rican peasant with his burro tied to a large tree, resting in the shade. They approach him. "Padre", they ask. "Do you know where the people are from the accident?" "Yes", the old man replies. "When I heard the crash, I took my burro over to the scene. I looked in the first car. It was full of dead Americanos, so I buried them over there (pointing to a fresh mound of earth). Then I looked in the second car. It was full of Cubans. They kept screaming that they were alive, but everyone knows you can't trust a Cuban, so I buried them over there." (pointing to a second mound of fresh earth.

Interesting discovery. I suppose we cannot stress enough the phrase "common ancestor" to those that adhere to the creationist fable.

Read through the comments and made another discovery in that the same doltish Disco Institute sock-puppets have made their way into the WSJ. Yesterday while listening to Michael Shermer he mentioned his description of Egyptian pyramid conspiracy theorists as being Pyramidiots. I think we should adopt a similar term for the creationists and YECers: Creationidiots.

Also, they hang upside down by their feet.

German far-right party fined for accounting irregularities

A court has upheld the German parliament's decision to fine a far-right party for accounting irregularities but halved the amount it must pay.

The National Democratic Party appealed to the Berlin administrative court against the fine of around $3.4 million imposed in March. The court ruled Friday that the fine was justified but too high, and decreased the amount. The National Democratic Party has no seats in the federal parliament but is represented in two of Germany's 16 state legislatures.

German intelligence agents view Patrik Brinkmann as a leading figure among right-wing extremists around the world. He founded the Continent Europe Foundation in 2004 in Sweden.

“The aim of the Continent Europe Foundation leader Patrik Brinkmann is to move to Berlin by 2010 at the latest and create a Europe-wide Internationale of nationalists in cooperation with national organisations from all European people,” the group said in a statement.

From Wikipedia on Steny Hoyer:
Position on international affairs:

# Israel: Hoyer is a supporter of Israel, and has often been allied with American Israel Public Affairs Committee. In September 2007, he criticized Rep. Jim Moran for suggesting that AIPAC "has pushed (the Iraq) war from the beginning," calling the comment "factually inaccurate.".

Important finds like this are always kept secret, until the research can be properly completed and documented. It has nothing to do with politics or "jealous secrecy" -- it's done to be responsible, so that news doesn't leak out before they're sure about what they have.

From the Telegraph piece about the Attenborough special soon on this find:

Prof Philip Gingerich, co-author of the report and president of the US Paleontological Society, said: [...]

"We have kept it under wraps because you can't blither about something until you understand it. We now understand it. It is going to advance our knowledge of evolution."

"Nonetheless, the latest fossil find is likely to ignite further the debate between evolutionists who draw conclusions based on a limited fossil record, and creationists who don't believe that humans, monkeys and apes evolved from a common ancestor."

... gives us an example of the poor science writing about which so much is written these days.

He is saying that they are telling the truth vis a vis Pelosi, which then means that she is lying. Couldn't happen without Obamas approval, so Steny Hoyer must be warming up in the bullpen to become speaker.

Good evening, Lizards.

It's more like Ms. Pelosi suffers from an allergy toward both responsibility and actual thought. She wants power, but doesn't want what comes with it, that being the blame when things don't go perfectly by her own standards. Thus, she wants to abolish coal, oil, nuclear, etc., power to "save the planet", but she balked at putting solar fields in the Mojave when she was told that that was about the only place they would actually work. (That would offend her "Green" friends, and that's not allowed, you know.)

I'm convinced that the destruction of the WTC was less important to her, personally, than the attack on the Pentagon. Why? Because if Washington could be hit, she, personally, was at risk. And she is apparently a lot like the character of Elizabeth Elliot in Clancy's The Sum of All Fears- she defines everything in purely personal terms. Her ambition, her power, and her survival. She would very likely have agreed to the CIA doing just about anything imaginable, let alone the equivalent of a fraternity initiation, if in doing so they would be guaranteeing the sanctity of her personal hide.

Her present high-RPM spin on this subject is just more of the same. She has now reached the third-most-important post in the nation (and I'm sure has her eye on the one two rungs above her), her personal safety is no longer in jeopardy (as she sees it , less from the efforts of the "rough men" on our side than from her and her cronies' "sophisticated, enlightened" attempts to play to the enemy), and so she has gone back to her usual, "peacetime" operational mode. That being My career and ambitions must be preserved at all costs- as long as somebody else foots the bill. Add in her reflexive, San Francisco Card-Carrying Liberal dislike of the military, intelligence, etc. "Establishment", and I suspect she didn't need too much time to decide to throw the Agency under her bus. In fact, she was simply "reverting to type".

She has never shown much respect for the military or intelligence communities, but this time around she isn't even trying very hard to hide her contempt for both. To her, the biggest shock was probably Leon Panetta reversing his previous insinuation that she was telling the truth, and that his own subordinates weren't. (My guess is a couple of career operations people read him the riot act over that brilliant remark.) After all, Panetta is supposed to be "on her side" as a liberal Dem and former member of Congress. (She probably feels seriously betrayed by his reversal- look for her to try to get payback.)

The main problem the Dems have right now is that if Pelosi goes, The One may get a replacement less "doctrinaire liberal"- or less beholden to the Party leadership other than himself. The main problem The One has is the danger that he may get stuck with the likes of Steny Hoyer as Speaker- which would displease him only a bit less than it would the KosKids.

Myself, I'm stocking up on popcorn. This is apt to be a long, hot summer in Foggy Bottom.

cheers

Good evening, all.

I'm currently doing an in depth-study comparative study of creation vs. biological evolution. The various theories of Christian creation were fairly easy to break down... but I'm still struggling to break Biological Evolution down into a list of theories that have some credibility in the scientific community.

Darwinism, Neural Darwinism, Social Darwinism, Universal Darwinism, Punctuated equilibrium, Punctuated gradualism, Quantum evolution, Molecular evolution and of course, Neo-Darwinism... am I on the right track here?

re: #373 Irish Rose

Its hard to say because we need to see the structure of your argument.

Your post just shows a list of phrases that contain the words 'Darwinism' and 'evolution'.

Are you asking us if you have missed some phrases out? Or are you asking if its the right track to list all forms of Darwinism and evolutionary theory?

I suspect that what you are doing is too big a job to get right first time out so perhaps you should just start out small and build on that.

What do you plan to say? How are you going to say it? Do you know in advance or will this be a process of discovery?

Are you doing this to learn? to make points? to teach? or to create discourse or encourage communication?

Thanks dude.

I will if you don't mind, I like a lot of what Charles does, but rarely comment

Then why make jerk comments when you do?

How much time have you spent on what you call this study so far?

I'm asking if it's on the right track to list all forms of Darwinism and evolutionary theory, yes... but I'm limiting it to only those forms that have at least some scientific legitimacy.

I know it's a big task, but this is something that I'm trying very hard to learn more about. I think that we tend to oversimplify the debate when we break it down to "creation vs. evolution".

I'm doing it for the sake of discourse and to encourage communication.
I don't really feel like I can communicate effectively in a debate unless I'm willing to make at least some effort to understand how my ideological opponents may be thinking.

No, not at all.

re: #251 John Neverbend

It had to be the adapidae. When the crew of the Enterprise-D began to de-evolve in the episode "Genesis", Data told Picard that he would turn into a primate similar to a lemur.

But that was just Picard -- one of the other humans on board de-evolved into a spider sort of thing (which suggests that the writers had a Creationist-like misunderstanding of evolution -- even allowing for the obvious fact that one doesn't expect the "science" on Star Trek to make sense).

I perhaps don't understand the gist of what you want to study. The different names you ascribe to evolution related issues are not different scientific theories, just different names from different aspects, or perspectives.

Are you trying to categorize the different ways different groups view evolution? If so you would do well to categorize the different ways different groups (religions) view creationism.

But I'm still not sure where this will lead, except back to where you started.

re: #336 opnion

I recall some time back that a fossil discovered in Africa, dubbed Lucy was thought to be our common ancestor. Anybody know if that is a widely held opinion?

The fossil called "Lucy" belonged to the species Australopithecus afarensis, and it's pretty widely accepted that this species was ancestral to the entire genus Homo, which includes our species, Homo sapiens sapiens. On the other hand, this isn't universally accepted because there were other species related to A. afarensis, and one of these other species might've been the actual branch that gave rise to the genus Homo.

Ah yes, that was Lt. Barclay. Perhaps the implication is that Barclay wasn't actually human. After all, he was a consummate nerd, as I recall.

re: #377 Irish Rose

If you just want to write an article on your blog to act as a seed to start a discussion then it doesn't need to cover everything.

Write about the things that you are comfortable about.

Are you trying to cover all the bases so you cover every possible objection that a Creationist might make?

I'm asking if it's on the right track to list all forms of Darwinism and evolutionary theory, yes... but I'm limiting it to only those forms that have at least some scientific legitimacy.

I'd stick to the basics. I'd start with Darwin. I think that he was essentially correct. He didn't know enough of the details to go too far wrong. :-)

He was right about life's common origins. His tree of life is a good metaphor. It is a family tree, only it goes a lot further back than most family trees. :-)

It works pretty well for vertebrates as they don't do as much cross species breeding as plants do. Bacteria and viruses are so promiscuous that species concepts make a lot less sense applied to them.

But they still evolve and we can still trace phylogenetic relationships between them. Have you seen this?

This guy is a doctor and a Christian. He uses DNA and evolutionary relationships to identify strains of bacteria infecting his patient so that he can provide targeted treatments.

This video vividly demonstrates how gradual change works and how it fits with everyday things that we know and understand.

I know it's a big task, but this is something that I'm trying very hard to learn more about. I think that we tend to oversimplify the debate when we break it down to "creation vs. evolution".

The whole field is huge and I don't mean just evolutionary theory. I mean people's reactions to it and how it fits with religion.

I'm doing it for the sake of discourse and to encourage communication.
I don't really feel like I can communicate effectively in a debate unless I'm willing to make at least some effort to understand how my ideological opponents may be thinking.

Your opponents? :-)

If you want to understand what people are thinking then it probably doesn't pay to be too structured. You can't dictate where the conversation will go, you need to follow their interests for a time to see where they lead.

Its give and take.

Are you going to do this on your blog?

387 Throbert McGee  Fri, May 15, 2009 6:16:44pm

Following up on #384: I should've asked exactly what opnion meant by the "our" in "our common ancestor."

For example, if "our" refers collectively to humans, chimps, and gorillas, then "Lucy" was definitely not "our common ancestor" -- her species was not ancestral to chimps and gorillas, but probably ancestral to modern humans.

I didn't mean that he had only one patient because he's an evilutionary doctor who treats the only atheist in his city. :-)

Maybe. But more likely, it went like this: "Spiders are biologically simple compared to humans; therefore, spiders must've been a stage in the evolutionary history of humans."

That makes as much sense as the Scientology belief that clams are the ancestors of humans, when the actuality is that spiders and humans, like clams and humans, share very ancient common ancestors.

A lower rung on the evolutionary ladder.

I think a fair number of people think in terms of the ladder metaphor. The tree would make a better model.

And a family tree would be a better metaphor than the large woody plant metaphor. :-)

Interspecies crosses break the woody plant metaphor (unless you are thinking of a strangler fig). But crosses between near relatives can happen with family trees. For example: [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

395 Cato  Sat, May 16, 2009 8:41:01am

If we were lemurs, does that mean we ascended to the trees before we came down again?

396 Mr Secul  Sat, May 16, 2009 10:36:43am

Tarsiers and most Lemurs are arboreal.

So I don't think it matters whether we had descended from tarsidae or adapidae. Either way our distant ancestors hung out in trees.

Now that I think about it; that's how I spent most of my childhood. I was a frugivore, eating: pears, plums, and apples.
