Photos: Turkish Journalist Who Took Cropped Pictures Hanging Out with Terrorists

Media • Views: 13,754

Turkish journalist Adem Ozkose was aboard the Mavi Marmara when it was boarded by the IDF, and he is the person credited with the photos that were misleadingly cropped by someone unknown. (And Reuters has ignored requests for more information and accountability, by the way, which means you can expect more incidents like this.)

As we pointed out yesterday, Ozkose is anything but a neutral observer; he’s closely connected to the Turkish Islamist group that organized the flotilla, IHH.

But Adem Ozkose’s connections to Islamists go quite a bit deeper than this. A reader in London emailed a link to the following article about Ozkose published last month at Turkish media site haber5.com: Haber5.com - Gerçek ve Özgürlükçü - Son haberler | Adem Özköse’nin kitapları yolda…

It turns out that Ozkose, as well as working for the Turkish ‘Real Life’ magazine and helping IHH try to run the Gaza blockade, is also a writer of Islamist books with at least one publisher deal and possibly more.

And the article at haber5.com is accompanied by the following picture, showing Adem Ozkose with two of his associates.

UPDATE at 6/11/10 12:09:21 pm:

LGF readers have been digging up more articles featuring Ozkose posing with and interviewing terrorists all over the world.

Using the word “journalist” to describe Adem Ozkose is like calling Al Capone a “liquor distributor.” It’s not wrong, exactly; it just doesn’t tell the whole story. In all of the following cases, the articles written by Ozkose are not merely reporting on terrorist groups — these articles are promoting the jihadist ideology.

Here’s Ozkose interviewing a Hamas spokesman, and openly expressing his support for jihad: Mehraba.com » Özköse Gazze’yi ve Hamas’ı anlattı. (Google Translation.)

Accompanied by this photo:

Here’s Ozkose with a spokesman for Islamic Jihad, spreading the message: “Insurgents who kill civilians is not a killer.”

Accompanied by this photo:

Here’s Ozkose with a very sympathetic article about the Taliban: “The Taliban won the hearts of the Afghan people.”

Accompanied by the following photos:

And here’s Ozkose interviewing Umm Nidal — a Palestinian mother and Hamas parliament member whose three sons were killed while murdering Israeli civilians, some of them children — and treating her as a heroine: “I thank God that seven Israeli soldiers kill Muhammad as my other two sons were killed.”

Accompanied by this photo and translated caption:

Our friend Adam Özköse, visited Umm Nidal’i wife of Hamas in Gaza house of parliament.

This puts Reuters in a quandary: Either they have to admit knowing that Ozkose is a terror tool (which is probably the truth); or they have to deny knowing, and thereby admit that LGF has better sources than they do.

And then Reuters and other media outlets would complain bitterly that the airstrike targeted a journalist, even though said journalist was working and embedded within a terrorist outfit.

Let them whine. If you you lie down with terrorist dogs, we'll blow your ass away along with them. He's not a journalist, he's a enemy who carries a camera.

Not even that. When I worked with Lockheed Martin on base (Canada, not the US, but I'm sure its the same) it was made clear to me that during the course of my employment duties that I was considered just as much a valid military target as anyone else on base.

Not that this was a big deal, it was about half way through the contract kind of thing.

What is the difference between a man and a parasite? A man builds. A parasite asks 'Where is my share?' A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbors think?' A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God...'

If I may repost my reaction to your brilliant post on the overnight thread which I repost for truth.

re: #127 McSpiff

Note: This post isn't a flounce. Its long, and boring. 90% of you will want to skip it. Most will say "no shit" at my conclusions. Unless you find what I have to say interesting in general, i'd say skip it .

So, I'm not sure if anyone has noticed or cared that I haven't been around much lately, but I haven't been. Ever since the IDF boarding of the aid flotilla. I felt that many here were jumping to strong conclusions with, at best, what was evidence from only one side in a "he-said-she-said" kind of argument. However, seeing the reactions of many regulars and Charles made me decide to keep my mouth shut until I had really made my mind up (to the best of my ability) about what happened out there.

Well, I've reviewed footage and statements from those on the ships, the IDF and experts, and here are my conclusions:

So there you have it, a total leftie, pro-Israel Canadian's take on the flotilla raid. Israel was honest in their reporting of events. Go figure

Brilliant. Thank you for sharing your conclusions. You demonstrate that being "a total leftie" does not interfere with your ability to reason and seek
out the truth, despite the avalanche of misinformation by the media.

There's also this:

I believe this is him (sympathetically) interviewing the mother of a 'martyr': specifically, Umm Nidal.

She attracted public attention after being filmed joyously preparing and advising her 17-year old son Muhammad Farhat for his March 2002 suicide attack against Israeli civilians. After infiltrating the Gaza Strip former Jewish settlement of Atzmona, opening fire on the students and throwing hand grenades at the school where they were studying, killing five teenagers and wounding 23 others, he was shot dead. Upon hearing of her son's death, she celebrated proclaiming "Allahu Akbar!" and giving out boxes of halva and chocolates.[1] Her eldest son, Nidal, was killed in February 2003 as he was readying for his attack on Israelis. A third son, Rawad, died in 2005 in an Israeli airstrike on his car carrying Qassam rocket. Three other sons are still alive.

LGF does wonders with the mind.

I change my mind about a lot of preconceived notions after reading posts by better informed people here.

Sometimes, I don't even realize a bias is there until I read someone's comment about it.

It's really a great feeling when you realize you've been wrong/didn't know the whole story and you can understand exactly why you were wrong before.

That's probably an unusual statement, you'd think most people would hate to find out they were wrong, but for me it show me that I'm learning something.

Bloodied walls, slingshots seen in new footage of Marmara

Nearly two weeks after the Israel Navy commandos commandeered the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara, new video documentation of the event was released on Friday that is exceptional in its quality and scope. The video shows the moments in which the clashes between the IDF and the ship's passengers started.

The video, which is 15 minutes long in its full-length version, was taken by American director Iara Lee, who participated in the flotilla.

Brazilian media outlets that published the footage reported that the director, a documentary filmmaker of Korean descent, succeeded in hiding the footage, thus enabling her to prevent its confiscation by the IDF.

Among the images documented in the clip are clearly visible blood stains on the walls of one of the ship's compartments as gunshots are heard in the background. In addition, Knesset Member Hanin Zoabi (Balad) can be seen sitting with her flotilla colleagues on the deck a moment before the first of the commandos reaches the scene.

Those attacking the soldiers can be seen holding slingshots as they await the helicopter's arrival.

Yep. I know. There's an effort by some to whitewash the historical antisemitism in Europe, especially by groups like the BNP and other fascists who are trying to fool Jews into think that they're their friends by couching everything in anti-Islamic terms. Few Jews are fooled, of course, but in today's historically-ignorant world, I worry they'll have some success in skewing people's perceptions.

I don't think he is a terrorist. I think he's a Western-looking asshole hiding behind the facade of journalism and using that position to promote terrorists. His clothing always seems so carefully chosen to project both the image of "Western" and "Journalist", even down to the stereotypical journo-jacket.

Other than his clothing, is there any other evidence that leads you to conclude that the Islamofascist propogandist is not a terrorist?

DKos: The slander of Helen Thomas and other facts

This diary is mostly about the smear campaign aimed at Helen Thomas and how right wing propaganda easily mixes with Israeli propaganda. It is a story that people would label me as crazy if I didn't have the facts to back it up. How could such a good natured woman have so many people denounce her without even knowing the effort that went into it? How could so many people turn their backs on her even though she served her country in a way that most civilians never could?

This diary is about the demonetization of Helen Thomas. It is also about the sickening diary I read earlier today calling me an "anti-semite" for defending her. This diary, in the end, is about debunking the lies of this phony controversy. It is about setting things straight to the reactionary mob that is a part of this blog that does nothing but tear things down.

My wife asked me to find something to show those who ask her how Judaism correlates "Thou Shall Not Kill" (which is in fact Thou Shall Not Murder) with Israel's actions. This answer I found is very interesting, and explains a sentence from the Talmud (Jewish "Manual") "If Someone Comes to Kill You, Rise Up and Kill Him First".
An excerpt (it was written in light of attacking tunnelers but the basic principle applied to flotilla and general defense strategy):
""Tunneling" is understood by most scholars to imply an event that occurred at night, under the cover of darkness, in contrast to one that occurred during daylight hours, described by the phrase, "If the sun has risen on him." If one defends oneself against a nighttime intruder by killing him, no guilt is incurred by the person who committed the killing. The reasoning behind this determination is based on the rabbinic interpretation of the intruder's presumed intent. By entering a home at night, when he is likely to encounter the home's occupants, the burglar indicates a willingness to use force against them, and is, therefore, presumed to have homicidal intent. Since he has, moreover, created an imminent threat to the residents, the burglar exposes himself to the risk of being killed by a member of the household, who is acting in legally sanctioned self-defense. The household member, therefore, will not be held liable and subject to punishment for killing the intruder."

Again: You're not paying attention to what I'm saying. I'm saying that this guy is not a terrorist in that he is not going to go somewhere with a gun and shoot people-- he will interview those who do and praise them. He is not the guy who was restraining the hostages-- he will take pictures of it and crop them dishonestly. He is something more insidious than a terrorist, and more dangerous: Someone co-opting the Western idea of the unbiased journalist, in order to promote terrorism.

If you want to say, "Well, I consider that a terrorist too", that's fine with me. I don't really care. I'm making the point that this guy is more dangerous then yet another dude with an AK. This is the sort of person who tries-- and succeeds-- in manipulating the Western media.

I agree with the point you are raising, and raise you 5... If you really understood how Talmud looks major Christian figures (ahm) you'd be horrified.

However, Talmud is the Jewish "Manual" to life and it's been ever-evolving as a known root for an ongoing change according to time, and it's perfectly accepted by all sects of Judaism.
The question raised was indirect correlation to the sentence "Thou shall not kill (error there already)" and the Jewish response is the Talmudic one.
I wouldn't use these arguments unless the Judaism perspective was invoked.

You are the one who said he was not a terrorist. The guy is no less a terrorist merely because he is a propagandist, just like Goebbels was no less a nazi merely because he was a propogandist.
Accusing others of not paying attention to what you're saying is really lame when they ask you to back up a conclusion which you expressly advanced.

You're not paying attention to what I'm saying. If you want to say he's a terrorist, that's fine with me, I understand that, and it's perfectly legitimate. I'm saying he's more dangerous and more odious than a terrorist, because he doesn't kill people directly, but aids and abets those who do.

it should be said that parsing talmud requires quite a bit of knowledge and study, and a grasp of multiple languages.

the talmud has been used against us by those who would happily accuse jews of blood libel and lecherous usury.

i'm just saying - while i think it's quite admirable to defend our faith using the talmud as a source, as with all books of religion, when we pick and choose, there's bound to be trouble. better i think to stick with the hard facts on the ground:

they sent a flotilla wherein one boat was populated by militants, who ambushed shayetet 13 chayalim, and then they tried to play victim.

charles + killgore trout's discoveries and journalism are a much better way to debunk a myth of a moral hamas or turkey.

I disagree. We must also counter anti-Semitism and anti-Jewish propaganda through correcting misunderstanding of the Bible, Talmud and Jewish law.

That the Talmud is abused by anti-Semites does not disqualify it as a source for correcting those lies.

be very careful with the phrase "perfectly accepted by all forms of judaism." technically, that is inaccurate, as the reform stream of judaism doesn't adhere strictly to halacha, including the oral law. also, i agree with bagua - i'm not horrified by what's in the talmud. it's a fabulous, rich tapestry of our faith and our laws, and the best part about it is, we can look back on it and argue with the viewpoints contained therein. we're supposed to. the torah is "lo b'shamayim," not in heaven. it's here, for us.

i don't de facto object to using the jewish faith [such as the talmud, the torah, gemara, what.have.you] within the parameters of the argument you described, american_peanuts, since judaism was defined as the boundary of the discussion. frankly, i'd like to thank you for standing up for the medinat.

bagua - i just think we should be very careful with the direction in which these sorts of discussions go. if it's a clearly delineated argument, fine. kosher. i'm happy to jump right in, gemara or gedolim swinging.

but two-sided swords, and all that. i think it is far safer, from a pro-israel perspective, to keep arguments regarding israel's actions to a factual, national actor perspective, rather than a religious one [not in the least because there are multiple streams of judaism at this point, and israel is a democracy, and there's the rabbinate to deal with, and it's just sticky].

that said, as a jewess, i do want the medinat to uphold the tenants of my faith. and i think they're doing as fine a job as humanly possible, under circumstances including but not limited to ambulances carrying rockets and flotilla activists wielding knives.

Senile old dictator Fidel Castro:

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro slammed Israel on Friday and compared its policies to those of Nazi Germany. He said Israel seems to have taken the swastika as its banner, and that it would "not hesitate" to send the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza to "crematoriums".

The former communist leader published an article in local press in which he said, "The State of Israel's hatred towards the Palestinians is such that it would not hesitate to send 1.5 million men, women and children to the crematoriums in which millions of Jews of all ages were killed."

Israeli has recently come under harsh criticism from many countries around the world over its takeover of the Gaza-bound Marmara ship, in which nine activists were killed.

Castro added in his article that, "The swastika would seem to be the flag of Israel today." He emphasized that his words were not "born of hatred", and noted that his country assisted persecuted Jews during the Second World War.

re: #180 Obdicut

When you do come back, maybe you can explain why you have a problem with me describing this guy as more insidious and more dangerous than a terrorist.

I think I understand some of the confusion. You're using "terrorist" as a job description. Terrorists go out and blow things up, and kidnap soldiers and do all that other stuff. Other dudes balance the cheque books, buy cell phones, keep food in the cave, etc. They have other titles for their jobs. Its like a company, everyone does their part. These groups also have supporters outside the official group who do things like crop photos and write books and say nice things about their mothers. These guys aren't terrorists (based on the job description) but they're infinity more useful because they keep a steady stream of recruits, money and western sympathy coming.

Bagua, Spare O'lake and others use the term terrorist to mean "anyone who furthers the goal of a terrorist group". So the foot soldiers who blow stuff up, the guys who write the cheques are both terrorists. This definition for terrorist could (and I think Bagua and Spare are) applied to those who haven't actually received their Hamas membership/discount card, decoder ring and non-fashion exploedy belt. That would be "journalists" like this particular piece of shit. He's knowingly aiding a terrorist group, therefore he's a terrorist.

So for Obi, terrorist is a job title, one role in a larger "terrorist organization", whereas for Spare and Bagua, "terrorist" is more...a way of life? You knowingly do things that directly benefit Hamas, and you're a terrorist.

I don't think anyone disagrees here, I think the terminology just got a little muddled.

re: #201 McSpiff

Yep. And I think it's important to make distinctions between the terrorist who go and blow stuff up and the guys who are legitimizing them, smoothing their path, and funding them, because they're more dangerous, in the end. There are tons and tons of terrorist organizations out there. Hamas is powerful because of its funding and its political organization and it's propaganda arm, not just because they have a lot of street soldiers.

Or, to put it another way, the better a terrorist organization is at using propagandists like this douchebag, the more street soldiers they can expect to recruit.

I'm fine with anyone who wants to say he's a terrorist, but I think a finer, better distinction can be made in noting that he's a legitimizer of terrorists, a propagandist of extremism, and that he appears-- to me-- to carefully cultivate a more 'reasonable' appearance to play off of Westerners views of the media as objective in order to achieve this.

Let me state that my upbringing is orthodox (not ultra) so I am at least "aware" of the Talmud and some of it's teaching. I LOVE reading the Talmud and Halacha and those are amazing (if not religious) analytic literature disecting aspects of living unlike any other religion has done (correct me if I'm wrong).
The "Horrified" point I made was specific per incident depicted in Talmud, which is how Judaism sees it and that's that ! But I wouldn't share this with any Christian friend, however open minded they are. Hence horrified.
As to "all" sects of Judaism - and this will probably stir some controversy so please go easy on me, I don't see a group who figured at some point to change Shabbat to Sunday as true Jewish. I will accept them as brothers but never as part of the Jewish Talmud/Halacha debate.
I was referring (and that is my mistake) to orthodox Jews thought the diaspora, who maintain the same agreements about Talmud (and that is an amazing thing if you conciser Jews span from China to Africa but still follow the same law).

here are million other points I would love to discuss regarding this matter ... but just so I don't go crazy OT, I will stop here.

Regardless, I enjoy "speaking" on LGF and enjoy finding an intelligent "ear" on the other side.

As suggested by Charles, the Weekly Standard story should be fact checked:

"The White House is sharply denying a claim by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol that "the administration intends to support an effort next week at the United Nations to set up an independent commission, under UN auspices, to investigate Israel's behavior in the Gaza flotilla incident."

The White House has suggested in the past that it supported international participation in an Israeli investigation, but a shift to the kind of international inquiry supported by many of Israel's critics would be a dramatic one, and a White House official brushed off Kristol's flotation."

This is just horrible.
Now they are saying 20 people are dead from the flooding at the Albert Pike campground last night with 30 missing.

"Tracy Farley, a spokesman for the Forest Service's Ouachita National Forest division, said she had only sketchy information about the torrent that hit the Forest Service campsite. She said she had been told that rainfall of an inch had been predicted, but the storm cell apparently stalled, dumping more than six inches on the area, a relatively narrow gorge where water can rise rapidly in heavy rain. It's my recollection from frequent hikes up to nearby Winding Stairs, a series of falls on the Little Missouri, that the campground has signs that warn of of the peril of rising water levels. Farley didn't know about monitors or alarm systems in the event of flash flooding or whether the Forest Service had employees on hand at the campground last night. "

US teenage sailor Abby Sunderland found in Indian Ocean

I'm glad she's safe and that her parents have decided that she will not be repeating this stunt, at least not for a few years.
Attempts to be the "youngest person to do whatever" can result in tragedy, especially when something intrinsically hazardous is involved. We had a spate of attempts back in the 90s to be the youngest person to fly a plane across the US. This reached its nadir when 7 year old Jessica Durbroff was killed in such an attempt, along with her father and a foolhardy instructor who was determined to have been acting under pressure "to adhere to an overly ambitious itinerary, in part, because of media commitments."
This grotesque episode led to federal legislation that effectively banned such attempts in the future.

I don't buy into these, military wing - political wing debates. This is an effort by the Jihadis (not you my friend) to hoodwink us into thinking there are distinctions. This gives the "political wings" or in this case the propagandist posing as a journalist, cover.

A) I'm not your friend. You have accused me of 'desperately spinning for the Islamicists', which was a shitty, foul, foolish accusation.

B) Again, I'm saying that the distinction is that guys like this dude are worse, and that yes, he is posing as a journalist to give himself cover. That is literally what my argument is, except I'm saying the distinction is valuable because assholes like this are more dangerous than a dude with an AK.

I think you are being too literal here, the guy is a terrorist as he proved on the Aid Jihad boat. His role was not to hold a knife, but I expect he got a few kicks in.

I have no idea whether he got kicks in or didn't. I expect he didn't, but smiled as he filmed them.

I'm not being either literal or non-literal in saying he's not a terrorist. I'm making the point that a propagandist is more dangerous than a normal terrorist. The semantics are really not important, but the distinction between guys who actually do violence and the ones who legitimize and orchestrate it is an important one to make.

Goebbels was worse than Peiper, and more dangerous. Both were fervent Nazis. But Peiper would have never been a problem if not for Goebbels's propaganda.

You forgot skill...Speed, Passing, Shooting, Defense and power...
I understand you don't really like sports.. It's cool...
how is Walter today?

re: #195 prairiefire

That girl has put me through so much worry! (kind of kidding?) I'm just not sure she has the stamina for this type of open water sailing.

Her ship isn't sturdy enough for Southern ocean winter. That's all. The trip is kaput because the mast of her ship is broken, but with halfway decent luck, it won't sink and she'll come home unhurt.

Expert sailors have weighed in with the observation that it's really not a good idea to push your luck by sailing those waters at this time of year. The mishap she suffered could have been worse, and getting through unhurt in an intact ship was not the most likely outcome.

A) I'm not your friend. You have accused me of 'desperately spinning for the Islamicists', which was a shitty, foul, foolish accusation.

Then don't address me you shitty, foul fool. I consider everyone here my friend, you included.

If you have a legitimate comment to make, make it. But when you try to derail other posters with your semantic rhetoric, you are being blatantly deceitful.

That is exactly what you were doing regarding the Islamists' agenda to spread Sharia in Britain, spinning for them. You selectively single me out to pester and ignored far stronger similar comments from Ludwig. It is dishonest and divisive. I ignore you, or upding you most of the time when you are not playing attack poodle.

re: #316 Bagua

That just doesn't make any sense, dude. And can you distinguish the difference between me calling your statement a shitty, foul thing, and you calling me, myself, shitty and foul?

You cannot call people the things you do and claim you think of them as your friends. It just isn't how humans work.

I'm not interested in getting into some pissing match with you, but if you consider me your friend, you have rather strange views of friendship-- and don't, apparently, care what I think about the subject.

I've argued with Ludwig about Sharia and Halacha before-- and on religion in general, and many other subjects, to boot.

You also misrepresented the discussion that had happened before-- and continued to misrepresent it throughout the thread.

I am glad you have the honesty to repeat your foul accusation that I'm spinning for the Islamicists, but it remains a stupid, shitty accusation to make.

And I'm done with this for this thread.

Currently my book is "Basic Circuit Theory" from Desor and Kuh. Very deep.

I found this link [Link: www.palestinefacts.org...]
I know the site is called "Palestine-facts", but this article is not very biased.
Thanks for bringing this up, i never heard of that turd.
BTW- he is Yasser Arafat's uncle.

Actually, it's called Palestine Facts because for centuries, that area was known as Palestine. The name kind of came in and out of being, as described here:

Good site, btw, with lots of accurate info :)

I don't know if the Grand Mufti and Arafat actually shared a blood line. There seems to be some dispute about that, but I do believe Arafat referred to him as "Uncle" as an affectionate term for someone who is like an uncle to you.

...

Nope, there is no difference. You hide behind rhetorical tricks the way Adem Ozkose hides behind the "journalist" title. You are constantly attacking me as, moronic, odious, foul, shameful, and the like. Don't hide behind sophistry.

As to "friends", I made a real effort to find some sort of cease-fire with you, yet you came out again with daggers drawn. And don't pretend you "are done with this thread", you obsessively follow dead threads to get the last word in.

I've offered you an olive branch numerous times but you always reject it, so it is your choice mate, not mine.

It sounds reasonable. It is very common in the arab world to refer to leaders and worshiped as family, though they usually use "brother" or "father" . But there is a major age difference, so it makes sense.
Thanks, the site is indeed about the British mandate rather than about Palestinians.

I also found this amongst the links:

The PLO and notably Arafat himself do not make a secret of their source of inspiration. The Grand Mufti el-Husseini is venerated as a hero by the PLO. It should be noted, that the PLO’s top figure in east Jerusalem today, Faisal Husseini, is the grandson to the Führer’s Mufti. Arafat also considers the Grand Mufti a respected educator and leader, and in 1985 declared it an honor to follow in his footsteps. Little wonder. In 1951, a close relative of the Mufti named Rahman Abdul Rauf el-Qudwa el-Husseini matriculated to the University of Cairo. The student decided to conceal his true identity and enlisted as "Yasser Arafat."

Great song from one of the greatest Westerns. John Ford directs John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin, Carradine pere, Edmond O'Brien, Woody Strode, Strother Martin and Andy Devine. Life is good.

I am glad to see that Charles is still fighting the good fight against Islamist propaganda in the media. His recent swing to the left had me pretty discouraged but I appreciate his willingness to discard partisanship and point out the outrageous behavior of the media in this case.

Are you showing your willingness to discard partisanship by expressing your appreciation?
