the (3) and (2) refer to unix reference manuals. section 3 is C user libraries and section 2 is system calls. The from was not intended to be a function call, I just used the (3) to designate it as a user library when system calls are better. :) sleepy now!

Freedom is the ability to rise to higher levels.
People use "freedom" and put a bottle, for instance, to their lips, debauch, dissipate, squander, frivol away
or post to lgf :)
This is quite different from the common definition of freedom which essentially means, "do whatever the hell you want".

I finally got The Kid up. He's in football now and the practice schedule is insane for this level. Or, maybe not. Three evenings a week plus Saturday morning and we leave in 35 minutes. Yep. That sucks. Once school starts it'll be after school once it gets cooler but, until then, it will up the commute to more than 500 miles a week. But, he's thrilled to pieces. You know, I used to respect Michael Moriarty for his acting ability. However, he doesn't do the "Outrageous outrage" very convincingly - as evidenced from his latest over at Brietbart's "Big Hollywood", attempting to resurrect the ghost of Joe McCarthy, and maybe a hint (just a hint, mind you) of those evil Joos in Hollywood.
(forgive the direct link, no cache yet)
As a perfect revelation of Hollywood’s utter narcosis, the Warren Beatty film, REDS, is not the indictment of Communism which some might try to paint it as, but the very effective portrait of Communism’s harmlessness.
A few American “idealistic” Leftists were, well, merely disappointed with the Russian Revolution.
That’s it.
Nothing more dangerous than broken dreams.
David Lean’s Dr. Zhivago?
That is just the beginning of the truth within Soviet and now neo-Soviet Russia.
We have an endless series of cinematic revelations about Nazi Germany.
Where are the classics about the unrelentingly homicidal enterprises of Marxism worldwide?
With a shamelessly Marxist President in the White House, isn’t it about time for the so-called Republican Moneyed Class to cough up for films revealing the Nazi-like realities of the Stalin/Mao/Kim Jong Il dictatorships?
I dunno Michael.
Maybe because Soviet Russia and the People's Republic of China were (and still are to a great extent) closed societies that, unlike 1930s/1940's Germany and Japan, weren't conquered and subsequently occupied as a result of a major war, which forced those countries to have all of their evil deeds documented and laid open for all the world to see?

David Graber was 19 when he hurriedly scribbled his farewell letter. "I would be overjoyed to experience the moment when this great treasure is unearthed and the world is confronted with the truth," he wrote.
While German soldiers combed the streets outside, Graber and his friend Nahum Grzywacz buried 10 metal boxes in the basement of an elementary school on Nowolipki Street in Warsaw's Jewish ghetto. It was Aug. 2, 1942.
The boxes were dug up more than four years later. By then, Graber and Grzywacz were long dead, murdered like almost all of their roughly 50 collaborators. Only three survived the Nazi terror. They provided the information that led to the recovery of the boxes.
The buried treasure consisted of about 35,000 pieces of paper that a group of chroniclers had collected and used to document how, during World War II, the German occupiers had deprived Warsaw's Jews of their rights, tormented them and, finally, killed them in the death camps. "These materials tell a collective story of steady decline and unending humiliation, interspersed with many stories of quiet heroism and self-sacrifice," writes American historian Samuel Kassow. His book "Who Will Write Our History?: Rediscovering a Hidden Archive from the Warsaw Ghetto," which has now been published in German translation, throws a new light on the exceptional source material.

Speaking of lost Jewish literature...
An Israeli judge overseeing a tussle over papers that once belonged to the author Franz Kafka has ruled that details of the documents should be made public.
The literary world now awaits previously unpublished works emerging from boxes containing manuscripts, letters and journals written by the Czech author and his adviser and friend Max Brod.
According to the newspaper Haaretz, the items include a handwritten short story by Kafka that has never been seen by the public. More boxes have yet to be opened, it reported.

What fucking idiots. No pity for them.
Fighting is a lot of fun. I miss it every day. If there's one addiction I'll never kick, it's wanting to get into a ring and fight. But that urge is so obviously tied into some dark, primal, scary shit that it's obvious it's only safe to indulge in under strict conditions of self-control, under rules. Even pro boxing is very dangerous-- but at least there's a ref, rounds end, you can't hit a guy on the floor.
There are also some people out there who are monsters at fighting. They're just naturally better than others. Born scrappers.
What happens when your fight club has a guy who can just destroy anyone else he wants in the club?

the hagler/leonard fight is still hotly debated more than 23 years later. I saw Marvin about 2 years ago when he came to my office. he lives in Italy most of the time and is an actor in Italian movies. he plays hit men and tough guys (surprise). He walked away from boxing after the leonard fight and never looked back. And THAT is remarkable in the boxing culture.

Yes. I do respect Hagler for that, and I do feel part of the reason Leonard got the decision in that fight was style. But I think that is fair; Leonard boxed in that fight. He beat Hagler silly when it came to movement, ring-control, counterpunching, and everything else boxing. And he stood toe-to-toe with Hagler in the brawling, soaking up everything Hagler could throw without going down.
I think Hagler delivered slightly more punishment-- but that means Leonard absorbed more punishment without letting it end him, and he never gave up the fight, he always was still boxing, always still inflicting damage.
A lot of people watching the fight can't understand how Leonard won because they only show the clips where Hagler has Leonard against the ropes. The first three rounds, Leonard just punched Hagler whenever the fuck he wanted to. And he always had a flurry left to get out of trouble.

Bear gets stuck in car, goes on brief ride
(CNN) -- If you think you've heard it all, follow this tale of a hungry black bear who went for a ride, literally.Douglas County (Colorado) Sheriff's deputies early Friday got a call about a honking car and a commotion inside. Perhaps it was teenagers or a thief, they thought as they approached Ralph Story's 2008 Toyota Corolla.
It turns out it was a thief, albeit the furry variety.
The deputies' first clue to something unusual was that the car was 125 feet below its normal parking spot in the driveway of the Storys' Larkspur home, which sits on five acres.
Imagine their further surprise when they turned on their flashlights and got a peek inside.
It was a full-grown black bear, also known as ursus americanus.
The deputies had earlier received a call from a neighbor. She had heard honking and came up to the Story home, where the family was asleep. She noticed the car was rocking back and both and she called deputies shortly after 3 a.m., according to spokeswoman Michelle Rademacher of the Sheriff's Department in the community 45 miles south of Denver.
Story said the bear was probably drawn to a peanut butter sandwich left inside by his 17-year-old son Ben. He said the family didn't realize what was going on until deputies arrived and the neighbor came back and called them. By then the car was no longer in the driveway.
Incredulous, Story, his wife and three teen children -- who have lived in Larkspur for 17 years -- rushed outside to see the red Toyota down the hill and near a tree.
Somehow, the bear had either opened the unlocked back door or pushed a window down to get inside. Understandably agitated, it bumped into the horn repeatedly and eventually knocked the car's gear into neutral. The Toyota rolled down the hill. The door added to the bear's indignity by closing at some point during the ordeal.
A sergeant and two deputies who arrived on the scene "were stymied on how to proceed," Story said.
They considered a tranquilizer or shooting the bear, whose gender is unknown. "Public safety is our primary concern," Rademacher said.
Finally, the officers decided the best outcome for all would be to keep everyone safe and let the bear live to see more adventures.
After taking pictures, one of them tied a long rope to a door handle and pulled. After a few moments, Story said, the bear bounded out around 5 a.m., at least two hours after it had gotten inside.
It left a foul-smelling "present" on the front seat.
The Toyota was trashed, with its air bags, seats and stereo torn to shreds. It's a total loss.
Ben Story told a reporter he was scared when the family rushed outside to see the car was gone.
"My dad is going to kill me. My car is gone. I didn't lock it. He said it was stolen."
Rademacher said deputies have enough experience not to be shocked during a day's work. But this will make for a great memory.
Ralph Story admitted the incident was pretty comical. He's glad the animal got away and no one was hurt.
"There's a bear in the car. Who are you gonna get mad at?"
Lol.

The Ali-Liston fight is worth reading. It really captures how much Ali changed the sport, both in terms of boxing and race politics.

Does anyone remember when the Champ in the early 1970's let a no name fighter have a shot at the title? (don't remember who the champ was) Stallone was in the audience. Then he wrote Rocky. I think the fight was in Cleveland.

will do ... ali's influence "in the ring" was also in evidence that night in 1987. sugar ray was on fire that night. if i remember, he had been inactive for a couple of years and nobody quite knew what to expect from him. but he modified the "rope a dope" strategy that ali used to beat foreman in 1974. let the puncher throw more blows, fend them off, and then when the other guy drops his hands, take advantage immediately. Leonard's performance stands the test of time.

oh yeah ... boxers were the earliest trash talkers ... led by Ali! Gotta go for my walk before the temperature hits 100 degrees. A final thought ... boxing will never be the same because the good fights are never on free TV anymore. The masses are deprived of the best live fights and that keeps fans from caring about the sport. Imagine a great fight on free TV in prime time on a Friday ... wow. have a good one!

Going to a memorial service in an hour or so, for one of my neighbors.
A week ago, we passed each other in our cars on the road, stopped and chatted a bit about a loose dog we saw, trying to figure out where he "belonged" so we could get him back home.
Day before yesterday, her husband sees my husband outside, and tells him that he's on his way home from the hospital, his wife just died, very suddenly and unexpectedly, complications of pneumonia.
She was 53, 4 years younger than I am.
I have to tell y'all this has me a bit disconcerted. How can a healthy 53-year-old get sick and die in the hospital all within a few days? Am I next?
What happened?
Has been an upsetting couple of days.

Yes, of course you are right.
I have a selfish reason for wanting to live awhile longer, I want to see my daughter graduated from college and settled in life. I've got some sort of immune system glitch, for which I get treatment that keeps me healthy most of the time. But it still makes me more susceptible to things... and I worry about it. Nothing I can do, though, it is what it is.

The first time I met her was great. We arrived at her house (she lived in her own home until she was 92, then in a group home in SF with one of the best views of the bay on earth) to the smell of a freshly-baked cherry pie. We go in, my two brothers and I, young rapscallions-- I think I was eight or so-- nervous to meet her.
We knocked on the door, and she greeted us, my mom introducing us. My great-great-aunt smiled at us, waving a spoon covered in pie-making ingredients, "Come right in!" she said, and we sat down at her nice little kitchen table. "I expect you're hungry!" she said, and we all, staring at the pie on the counter, said "Yes, yes!"
So she smiled again, reached into the cupboard, pulled out some shredded wheat, served us three bowls of it, and then ate the entire pie while smiling at us and not saying a word. Then she took a nap.
Badass.

Decided to walk the course seeing it was relatively mild temperature wise.
Made it to the 13th tee (can see my place from there) and the thought of sitting in here with the a/c on and a cool beverage won over!
Common sense does not an old man make.

I've seen some real stupid stuff done by tourists, but that isn't even the dumbest.
I was out at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone this past May and was up on one of the trails. Everyone was yapping about how there was a black bear down at the end of one of the raised paths.
Well, it wasn't just a black bear. It was a black bear eating flowers about 5 feet from the raised path. And there were like 10 people within 50 feet. One even got down on their belly to take pictures from below the path - maybe 15 feet away (if that). I was probably 75 feet away - still closer than I should have been, but figured that if the bear did attack, I was further away and there were slower ppl between me and the bear. Nuts don't begin to describe that situation.
The NPS recommends getting no closer than 300 feet to either grizzlies or black bears.

Shirley Sherrod may not take her job back but is talking:
She's not so sure about returning to government work but would like to talk more with Obama about promoting togetherness across the country.
"I don't want to be the fall guy, the fall girl, for discrimination in the Department of Agriculture," Sherrod told The Associated Press at her southern Georgia home. "I need a little down time to reflect on what's happened the last few days. Is there another place for me to help all of us take advantage of what has happened over the last few days? I don't know yet."
Obama, according to spokesman Robert Gibbs, urged Sherrod to transform "this misfortune" into a chance to use her life experiences to help people.
"If in any way, what I've gone through can help move people in this country to a better understanding of each other, I'm willing to do that," she said.
Breitbart may have created a potential civil rights champion. Sherrod's relaxed demeanor and easygoing personality is like kryptonite to Breitbartian shtick. This is rich. You go girl!

Badass.

i think candidates have to MEET with those groups, but they need to maintain a certain distance while keeping cordial relations with the tea party. and they must demonstrate dignity and pragmatism in their positions. I think there are a certain number of tea party members with a bit of buyer's remorse who could be steered down a more moderate path if the right candidate presents themself.

Re Breitbart:
Everyone with a lick of sense is justly outraged at what he did to destroy a good woman's career and life. Now that it's bounced back as instant karma on him, he shows himself for the wussy he is. A real man would have stood up and said he's sorry. Scratch that. A real man would build a freaking time-machine and go back and undo everything he's done for the last two years.
What I want to know is, where's the outrage over what he and his bobble-headed friend O'Keefe did to the many equally innocent people at ACORN? I have no figures ready to hand, but ACORN was a large organization. How many jobs did he destroy? How many people are unemployed today because of his straight-up campaign of lies, smears, and innuendo? And how many other people whom ACORN might have helped are suffering as a result?
This man should be held accountable.

If things don't turn around, Obama will be toast in 2012. I say this as a person looking at things. Not because I am a Republican. And I have no idea who will beat him.
I think Generic Republican could wind handily. Against whoever the tea party picks? Doubtful. At this point I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see weird racist smears in the Presidential debates finishing off the GOP in '12.

I also went to the very first tea party event here, and it was not much.
Afterwards - well, at least for the situation here, you're partly correct about the hijacking.
At least here, the events weren't hijacked, they were being run by a group from the "Constitution Party", which you can google if you want (suggest not).
I started looking into the organizers of the local events when Killgore started doing his (what seemed to be endless) posts on the tea party "movement". And did not like what I saw.

Shirley Sherrod has a lot of cool.
She has a lot to learn if she wants to stay in the spotlight and potentially debate in media scrums. But it's clear that her demeanor and personality tend to an easygoing peacefulness, she's very genuine. Used wisely it would drive Megyn Kelley nuts LOL.
It's really in her court if she wishes to use this opportunity for greater good. I would not hold it against her if she chose not to pursue a public life and tried to return to obscurity.
Breitbart prolly wishes she'd go away.

A local man identified only as "Daedalus" is in critical condition today after falling off the Stupid Tree and hitting every branch on the way down. He has refused to say why he climbed the tree, saying nothing except obscene rants about ponytails, ukuleles, and "Totalitarian Progressives".
