Gingrich Bails Out of the Anti-Mosque Demonstration

US News • Views: 3,974

Newt Gingrich, always calculating the political angles, has bailed out of the Bigot Brigade’s September 11 demonstration against the Cordoba House project: Mosque protest loses Gingrich.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) will not be addressing a protest of the proposed mosque in lower Manhattan on the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

The organizers of the rally, Stop Islamization of America and Freedom Defense Initiative, announced Gingrich as one of the event’s confirmed speakers on the Web last weekend.

On Monday, Gingrich launched himself into the spotlight of the debate on national television with controversial comments that brought a slew of criticism from fellow Republicans.

But a spokesman for Gingrich, a possible 2012 presidential candidate, told The Hill that the former leader of the House had never confirmed his appearance. Instead, one of Gingrich’s staff had agreed to send a video message from him to be shown at the Sept. 11 rally.

That has since been canceled.

Looks like Gingrich realized he was hooking up with outright racists and hate-obsessed lunatics, and decided the time wasn’t really ripe for that yet.

He has a lot of back-pedaling to do just to get where he was in 2007.

Another "damage is done" situation.

Or maybe he realized that video CurioiusLurker found was going to get spread around anyway, and the bigot brigade wouldn't buy his bullshit anyway.

What a travesty that man is. From lying about whether US Presidents have ever met with dictators (they have, numerous times) in order to smear Obama, to pandering to the religious right, to hypocritically going after Clinton while himself having an affair, he is like a portrait of what's wrong with politics today. No integrity, no real ideas, nothing but the desire for power.

I'm not sure. He compared the mosque builders to nazis, it's kind of hard to walk back a godwin.

If they ever put pictures in dictionaries to better illustrate the meanings of words, Gingrich's would probably fall under several words (hypocrite, opportunist, philanderer, etc).

Gov't: 23K workers affected by Gulf oil drill ban

A six-month ban on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico would directly put more than 9,000 people out of work and indirectly affect another 14,000 jobs, according to a memo from the nation's top drilling regulator.

The federal document, which weighed the economic impact and alternatives to the ban, was sent to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on July 10 by Michael Bromwich.

Salazar issued a moratorium in June, but it was struck down by a federal judge in New Orleans after oil and gas drilling interests said it wasn't justified following the Gulf oil spill.

The Obama administration issued a new moratorium July 12 — two days after the memo — that stressed new evidence of safety concerns. The White House hopes the revised ban will pass muster with the courts.

The moratoriums were put in place following the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion April 20 that killed 11 people. Millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf after the rig sank.

Some energy experts, engineering consultants and Gulf Coast leaders have joined Big Oil to ask Salazar to change his mind. Drilling was safe before the BP spill, they said, and Gulf communities that depend on the industry were suffering unfairly.

Interior Department spokesman Matt Lee-Ashley said the agency has been very clear that the economic impacts of the moratorium would need to be addressed and noted the Obama administration secured an agreement with BP to set up a $100 million fund for affected rig workers.

"In light of the current risks of deepwater drilling as illustrated by the BP Deepwater Horizon Spill and the potential impacts of another spill, the moratorium is necessary and appropriate. With that said, the worst-case economic impact estimates from three months ago have not been realized. The reality on the ground suggests that the impacts are less than we initially projected as a potential worst-case scenario," Lee-Ashley said.

'Ground Zero' imam on Mideast tour to make Islam 'Americanized'

The imam behind the plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero surfaced yesterday far from the controversy -- in Bahrain, where he's on a taxpayer-funded trip to the Middle East to spread good will.

Appearing in public for the first time in weeks, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, speaking at a mosque near Bahrain's capital of Manama, said he wants to "Americanize" Islam -- but dodged questions about the uproar over his planned mosque and community center.

Rauf spoke against fanaticism, saying, "This issue of extremism is something that has been a national-security issue -- not only for the United States but also for many countries and nations in the Muslim world."

"This is why this particular trip has a great importance because all countries in the Muslim world -- as well as the Western world -- are facing this . . . major security challenge," Rauf told Associated Press Television News in a brief interview.

The cleric also said he was working on a way to "Americanize Islam," but didn't offer any details.

Rauf noted that many different interpretations of the faith have emerged over the last 1,400 years.

"The same principles and rituals were everywhere, but what happened in different regions was there were different interpretations," he said.

"So we recognize that our heritage allows for re-expressing the internal principles of our religion in different cultural times and places."

Some of the imam's American critics said they fear he is using the State Department-sponsored trip to raise money and rally support in the Muslim world for the mosque.

"I think there is no place for this," said the Rev. Franklin Graham, who is the son of evangelist Billy Graham and opposes the Ground Zero mosque.

"Can you imagine if the State Department paid to send me on a trip anywhere? The separation of church and state -- the critics would have been howling."

US officials have said they instructed Rauf not to fund-raise for the mosque during his trip.

Yes...wait..Miss USA?

Oh yeah, and she's a muslim!

Miss USA, Rima Fakih of Dearborn, says she doesn't believe a mosque should be built near the site of the World Trade Center in New York City.

In an interview that aired Friday on the syndicated "Inside Edition," Fakih addressed a topic that has been generating lots of headlines and controversy. The interview was taped earlier this week while Fakih and other contestants were rehearsing in Las Vegas for Monday's Miss Universe pageant.

"I totally agree with President Obama regarding freedom of religion," said Fakih, a Muslim who was born in Lebanon. But she went on to say the mosque "shouldn't be built so close to the World Trade Center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than with religion."

She's going to be in the Miss Universe pageant. Go USA!

Having formerly worked as a wellhead geologist in the Gulf, I certainly feel their pain. It sucks. And it is not these workers' fault.

If the oil companies had *real* response plans, as opposed to ones that discussed walrus impacts and included "consultants" who have been dead for five years, this wouldn't be happening. So don't blame the Gov't. Apply blame where it belongs.

The speakers include representatives from SOWF, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Dr. Alveda King and Marcus Luttrell. Jo Dee Messina will be performing as well.

Also, he states no signs will be allowed.

I suspect his rally will greatly disappoint Tea Party types due to all his hype and a lack of overt craziness allowed. This grandstanding may be coming to an end.

I'd really like to see a debate between Newt and Obama. It'd probably go something like this:

Moderator: Gentlemen, what would you say are your greatest accomplishments? Mr Gingrich?

Newt: I crammed a balanced budget down the throat of the obstreperous Bill Clinton. That was a good day. But things haven't been the same since I left congress.

Moderator: Mr Obama?

Accomplishments? Well...that's not the question. I'm prosing that we get more ham. Then we could have ham and eggs - well, if we could just get some eggs.

Newt: Umm, what?

Harry Reid was roundly denounced in several threads for taking his stand, based on no more than what appears to be political expediency, rather than any principles he might hold.

With the Dems, there are isolated cases.

Agreed. MMS was WAY too deep in bed with the oil companies. Exxon received approval to drill Macando in March of '08. Still, with everything else that was on his plate, you really can't bark at Obama that much. MMS wasn't on anyone's radar before the blow out. Now it is being torn apart and put back together gain to ensure these conflicts of interest cannot happen again.

You know what? I am so sick of the same 2 commercials being played day and night every 8 minutes on every channel by BP...The same 2 commercials from the beginning and I'm sick of 900,000 views..
Who at BP thought it was a good idea that to keep America informed by playing the same ad into the effen ground?
You know..I dunno..just an idea..Try an ad every week of the latest news..
Gawd what dumbasses

The only ad I want to see is of them picking up their shit and gtfo.

Seriously, there are oil companies with better records of safety that we could have sticking straws in the ground around here.

Hey Reine! Hope you and the Roi are well.

And I am not surprised that BP isn't running those ads in Louisiana and southern Mississippi. You guys, more than anyone, know who screwed the dog at Macando. And I agree with you that the new MMS should ask for updated response plans for all sites that have received permits and review new drilling requests *now*.

The question is, how long will it take for the oil companies to generate real response plans that could pass muster for a similar blowout in deep water?

Their corporate culture encouraged the cost-cutting that led to the disaster; I think their pr efforts show that culture hasn't changed.

Yeah, I started to add above that one reason they aren't running the ads here is that "We're really not as stupid as BP would like to think we are", but I let it go!

1) Off La coast, there are no permits right now. Well, except BP has a permit. No one else does.
2) Companies have reviewed their response plans and I believe some revisions have been submitted (were awhile back, actually).
3) No plan will really pass muster. Each incident is a situation unto itself. It is impossible, IMO, to predict how any incident will occur or play out.
4) Within a week after the incident, all wells had been inspected by MMS; no major violations were found, a few minor ones were and were "fixed" within shorty order. Then the moratorium was issued.

Well the Harpy may have cleaned up her main blog, but she still has the newt listed as being a speaker over at the sioa site. I also ran across this in the

SIOA Condemns Obama’s Blessing of Ground Zero Mega-Mosque; Bolton, Wilders, Gingrich to Speak At 9/11 Rally post. (Sorry for the direct link, the Google cache page isn't working properly)

"The confirmed list of speakers includes 9/11 family members; former U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton; former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich; the Dutch Parliamentarian and freedom fighter Geert Wilders; Gary Berntsen, a candidate for the U.S. Senate from New York; Jordan Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice, which has filed suit to stop the Ground Zero mega-mosque; Ginny Thomas, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife; Michael Grimm, a candidate for Congress from New York’s 13th district and a 9/11 first responder; and journalist Andrew Breitbart."

WTF??????

That's probably true. Unfortunately true. But somehow, "We are just going to wing it." is not real comforting at this point. We *know* another Black Swan can appear at any time. And we can't just "trust these guys to do the right thing". When profit trumps safety, as it obviously did at Macondo, regulatory oversight must be increased.

Much more important to the country than a mosque.

I disagree.

If Park51 is canceled or moved America is announcing that freedom of religion is no longer one of its cornerstones.

The other freedoms are sure to follow shortly.

That's more important, in my opinion, than the Gulf. But not by much.

If it would further his chance at power I have no doubt he would be standing with them.
