The 50 Scariest Haunted Houses in America
You don’t scare easily, huh? How about the homes that hosted the most gruesome murders imaginable? Maybe the dark basements where innocent children met horrible ends? Or the backwoods houses where multi-headed incubi raped whole families? OK, so that last one may be a bit much, but you get the picture: the places where really messed up things happened some years ago, and where the echoes of those messed up things can still be heard today. Still not scared? Well, check out our collection of the 50 Scariest Haunted Houses in America, but don’t tell your parents it’s our fault that Little Jimmy wants to sleep in their bed tonight.
I can not put into words just how much I enjoy not being a superstitious goober.

Reminds me of Rush’s “Time Stand Still.”
I turn my back to the wind
To catch my breath
Before I start off again.
Driven on without a moment to spend
To pass an evening with a drink and a friend
I let my skin get too thin
I’d like to pause
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim
Who learns to transcend
Learns to live as if each step was the end
(Time stand still)
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
(Time stand still)
See more of the people and the places that surround me now
Time Stands still
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger
Experience slips away
Experience slips away
Time stands still
I turn my face to the sun
I Close my eyes
Let my defences down
All those wounds that I can’t get unwound
I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain, whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide comes around
(Time stand still)
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
(Time stand still)
See more of the people and the places that surround me now
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger.
Make each impression, a little bit stronger
Freeze this motion a little bit longer
The innocence slips away
The innocence slips away…
Time stands still
Time stands still
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people and the places that surround me now
Time stands still
Summer’s going fast, nights growing colder
Children growing up, old friends growing older
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger
Experience slips away
Experience slips away…
The innocence slips away.

Argh don’t get me started. Billions of humans have lived before us so the Earth would be crawling with “ghosts”. Nope, instead the only ghosts that have been fabricated reside in architecturally significant homes and typically died in the 19th or early 20th centuries.
What is there like a ghost rule that means they have to hang out in the place the croaked? Damn, if I was a ghost and kicked the bucket in Newark, NJ I’d head down to Tahiti or someplace nice.

I tell you, the dude was creepy looking enough, and wearing some weird clothes. Were I the superstitious type, I would have shit stuff I ate over twenty years prior when that dude woke me up.
He was just helping me out, though. Apparently, on top of having an over night groundskeeper, there was also private security that did the occasional drive-through of the grounds. He explained that if they had found me first, I’d be sleeping in a drunk tank instead of a cemetery.

When I lived in Washington I spent a lot of time hanging out in graveyards. There was always one close to were ever I lived. On a nice day I’d grab a forty and a book and just drink and read for a couple of hours. It’s just like hanging out at a public park, with the added bonus being that 99.9% of the people there have permanently STFU.

In the early years of the 20th century, San Francisco got rid of all non-military cemeteries in the county—hence Colma, our very own necropolis. Population is less than 2000. If you count only the living.
When I was a kid, there was a little playground attached to the Jewish Community Center that we’d be taken to to play. The whole area had been one big graveyard at one point, and it still had several tombstones and a bit of fountain in place.

Alabama has a number of old graveyards dating back to the civil war. Some that no one but the locals know about. My ex’s uncle always took us. Just during the day, and we would look at the headstones. A lot of young women who died in childbirth, 17-20 yrs old with a little grave next to it. “Baby Smith” some would say. Sad.
They lived in Eufaula. The founder of the town and his family were buried in a mausoleum way off the beaten path. Huge trees with hanging Spanish moss. The sun would shine through in a haze. About 150 yrs old. Their slaves were buried next to them in unmarked graves with railroad ties to mark off the area. It was said to be an honor for them to be buried in the same graveyard, if you can imagine something like that.

Several small town historical societies around Eufaula mount annual graveyard tours, with actors telling the stories of the inhabitants. We did the one at Columbia last year. The town was tied to the Mississippi River showboats, and wintered 19th century circuses.

Disturbing news from Haiti:
Cholera epidemic spreads in Haiti; Nearly 200 dead
A cholera epidemic spread in central Haiti on Friday as aid groups rushed doctors and supplies to fight the country’s worst health crisis since January’s earthquake. Nearly 200 deaths had been confirmed and more than 2,000 people were ill.The first two cases of the disease outside the rural Artibonite region were confirmed in Arcahaie, a town that is closer to the quake-devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.
Officials are concerned the outbreak could reach the squalid tarp camps where hundreds of thousands of quake survivors live in the capital.
“It will be very, very dangerous,” said Claude Surena, president of the Haitian Medical Association. “Port-au-Prince already has more than 2.4 million people, and the way they are living is dangerous enough already.”
The Ministry of Health confirmed 194 deaths and 2,364 cases of cholera, said Imogen Wall, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.“It’s concentrated in Artibonite right now and we’re doing our best to keep it that way,” Wall said.
Dozens of patients lay on the floor awaiting treatment at the St. Nicholas hospital in the seaside city of St. Marc, some of them brushing away flies on mattresses stained with human feces.[…]
Haiti is not much on the front page these days, but here we see the reality of extreme poverty and a broken society, where basics such as sanitation become a luxury.
I’ve become pretty numb to all the sorrows of the world over the years, with so much going on. That’s a sad statement, too.

Excellent. I always told his uncle he should lead a tour there. He knew every inch of that town. On the way down to that graveyard, he all of a sudden stopped and started picking at the ground. He pulled up some wild onions! And we ate them! More like scallions, but sweeter. He was a cool guy.

I also felt that no one visits these graves. It’s nice to be remembered. We would be driving to the store and Gene would say, “Wait a sec, I want to show you something.” And off we’d go down some dirt path to a secluded graveyard.

Lots of those up here. There’s one from the 1840’s I visit reguarly. The ones you mention are bad enough but the stones that make me ache are the ones for the 2 - 6 year old children dying of diseases we have vaccines for. The same diseases making a comeback because of stupidity… :banghead:

A) Juan Williams was fired by NPR. Some people need to get over it.
B) Juan Williams won the Fox News lotto and will now get 2 million over the next three years for saying stupid shit on Fox News as they expect.
C) NPR will not lose it’s funding anymore than those homophobes at Liberty University are going to lose their government grants.

I spent the night in a “haunted house” once. I was a teenager, and everyone was talking up the “fact” that the ghost of a young woman was always appearing in the room I would be sleeping in. I suppose they were trying to spook me or something.
Long story short, after one fat spliff and several hours of trying to stay awake, I eventually succumbed to sleep and woke up disappointed. I guess “Hot Ghost Chick” was not on the menu that night.

Looks like the VA Beach GOP is quite a nest of … something or other…
Going racially rogue in Virginia
Talk about going off message: Scott Rigell, the Republican challenger for Virginia’s Second Congressional District seat held by first-term Democrat Glenn Nye, had a simple, effective strategy. Pound the nominal incumbent in campaign ads by linking Nye with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the liberal power broker Republicans love to hate.
But this week, Rigell supporters decided to freelance and forward racially charged e-mails to friends. On Tuesday Karen Beauchamp recommended an online video called “Barack Obama, the angry negro.”
The former member of the Virginia Beach City Committee warned colleagues, “the language is strong, but the sentiment is right! We will take America back.”
An ESPN anchor likes to say, “once is an accident, twice is a trend.’’ Day before Beauchamp’s faux pas, David Bartholomew, chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party, resigned after it was learned he forwarded an e-mail about a black dog applying for welfare. The message went viral and drew condemnation from Republicans and Democrats.
Excuse me, are a few Virginia GOP loyalists playing proverbial race cards?
The Obama e-mail episode hit the inside pages of the Daily Press, the local newspaper, Wednesday, and by Thursday, the story migrated to the front page.[…]

Juan Williams is in no way sincere
“I do a double take. I have a moment of anxiety of fear given what happened on 9/11. That’s just a reality,” he said, noting that when he told his former boss, she suggested that Williams had made a bigoted statement.
“It’s not a bigoted statement. In fact, in the course of this conversation with Bill O’Reilly, I said we have an obligation as Americans to be careful to protect the constitutional rights of everyone in our country and to make sure that we don’t have any outbreak of bigotry. but that there’s a reality. You can not ignore what happened on 9/11 and you cannot ignore the connection to Islamic radicalism, and you can’t ignore the fact of what has even recently been said in court with regard to this is the first drop of blood in a Muslim war in America.”
“I do a double take”?

Asked about the intense media coverage of Mr. Williams’s firing, especially on Fox, Ms. Schiller said:
The overwhelming response to this has been, I have to say, quite extraordinary. I’ve had Fox News crews follow me from my home. I’m getting messages on my home voicemail insinuating threats against my children.
Do I think that is an overreaction to a termination of a contract of a news analyst who violated our code of ethics? Yes, I would have to say that that’s quite a bit of an overreaction.
It’s a personnel decision. I don’t see how that warrants threats against my children.

The only good news is that in Illinois, the unemployment laws do somewhat favor ex-employees. In order to deny benefits, an employers must show willful misconduct, which means they can’t just fire you and refuse to pay.

Or it is determined that you don’t mesh well with the ‘culture’ of the company after being hired. This has happened to a couple of friends of mine.
interesting…If you are paid a six figure salary to advance and grow the company vision..Why can they not fire you on the spot if you fail in those goals? No one will cry a tear for me if I can’t cut it in the corporate world…And no one cheers me when I make a huge year end bonus for my work…No one forced me to accept the ground rules.. Huge rewards..Huge failures

Good evening, all.
Long time, no post. Well, with the Bitter Half and the Board of Directors (wife and kiddos) out of town to visit my in-laws, I bethought myself to pass the time with some Oswald Spengler and a batch of liquid apple pie (made by combining roughly equal quantities of apple juice and apple cider with about half their volume of Everclear).
Ya know, once you put down a couple snorts of the stuff, Spengler’s quite amusing.

So. Open thread. Any predictions on John Boenher’s agenda? The R’s are *going* to take the House, but not the Senate.
Useless investigations.
The House can pass anything they want, but most of it will be targeted to force Democrats to take unpopular positions to set the stage for 2012. Like 1994, the House passed tons of Contract with America legislation but very little of it passed into law, nothing really changed. I suspect it will be the same way for the next two years.

It’s not so cut and dry if I hear what electric is saying. We have that “culture” insanity too, which usually goes along with “we’re a big happy family.” Although my rebuttal to that is, my family doesn’t fire people when we get cranky with them.
All too often I’ve seen people shoved out, not so much fired, for not fitting in.

It’s happened to me a couple of times. It usually gets backed up with some company policy violation bullshit.
One company fired me for inappropriate use of their email system. You see, I had the unmitigated gall to receive inappropriate, unsolicited emails. Not send mind you, but receive.
I’m sure it had nothing at all to do with the fact that I brought up possible state and federal labor law violations regarding another company policy just three days prior to my termination.

They can fire you if they don’t like you. It’s as simple as that. It may or may not have anything to do with performance. More than often, the move is political in nature, though on paper, it’s made to look perfectly legal.

Mr. Boehner continues to travel to golf destinations on a corporate-subsidized tab, though now it is paid for through his political action committee, the Freedom Project. In the last 18 months, it has spent at least $67,000 at the Ritz-Carlton Naples in Florida, at least $20,000 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va., and at least $29,000 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, federal records show, for fund-raising events. Yeah, but I tell you, we’ve got it down to an art-form. If you’re on salary (and you’re a sucker if you let them do that to you) then you’re on-call at all hours, and failure to respond in a timely manner to telephone calls or emails (even those received after normal business or even bedtime hours) can be enough to make for a VERY unpleasant day when you get back in.

Horseshit. He’s cad and an asshole. I can’t see how anyone could call him “innocent” after the way he trafficked in stories about the Palins. In other news, Guanxi88’s tobacco processing - part of long-term preparations to establish himself as Guadalupe County’s Baron of Bootlegging and ‘baccy when the wheels fall off - entered a new phase with the final round of experimentation on tobacco sauces and casings.
Using a blend of blackstrap molasses, apple cider, everlear as a soaking sauce prior to blocking and pressing his homegrown tobacco (note: this ‘sauce’ is eminently potable, and in fact is in his glass at this moment) he has succeeded in taming the native harshness of his tobacco crop and producing a pipe tobacco that compares favorably with many of the old-school codger burleys. Experimentation continues with his hungarian and turkish tobacco crops, with encouraging early results on his homegrown and home-processed cigarette tobacco.

We should all try to post something to kill this thread.
The Cats were a rock band from Volendam, The Netherlands. Together with BZN, they were key figures of what came to be called the Palingsound (eel-sound), an umbrella for artists residing in Volendam (the country’s top seafood city).

Ham and pineapple pie arrived. Munching first slice down now. Second slice gets the bacon hot sauce! As for the beer, I’m settling for ice cold filtered water. I’ll get more than enough carbs from this meal.
Oh Mr. Moon is brewing his pumpkin beer for the season. It’s something new. He wants to try Mead next. I was kinda hoping he’d get into wine, but I think I have to wait.
The pumpkin beer should be interesting tho.

But, yeah, sold the mond house in South Austin - turned a handy profit, too - moved out to guadalupe county, bought a nice old house - same size - for about 1/3rd what the Austin one was, banked a crap-load of cash after paying off ALL FREAKING DEBTS.
Hell, i even learned to drive just shy of the 2 score year mark.

from Roger Ebert via twitter:
Dear Mr. Robert Zemeckis Sir
Mr Zemeckis sir, I wonder why you keep making movies with computer motion catcher. I feel real live video is better and less scary. My father feels you are lazy to record using real live cameras. My mother always says to me if I’m lazy, I’ll become fat like Aunt Aghanashini, so I’m careful not to be lazy and you had better be careful too because Aunt Aghanashini is very fat and you’re my favorite director in the whole world and I don’t want you to become as fat as her because then you can’t make movies anymore. My mother doesn’t think you’re lazy. She thinks your experymental. My father is laughing.

Someone had stolen his emergency wind up/solar/battery operated radio, which he had in case of hurricane’s and stuff like that, and I told him I had one I could give him. He sent me an email last Tuesday, and I sent him a reply, I’ve not heard from him, nor do I think he has been on LGF since then.
Anyway, I mailed him the radio today and I just wanted to make sure he knew it was on it’s way and to be on the lookout for it.
I emailed him again today to let him know it was mailed, but no answer.
I was concerned, considering he is usually on here at least twice a day, before and after his work shift.

Guy’s screwing up, or looked funny at someone, or whatever it might be, and if he’s past the 90 day mark (and hence, in principle, eligible for unemployment) we put insane pressure and impossible tasks on him, double-down on the abuse and contempt, and, in general, do everything we can to make him quit.
He doesn’t quit, we have “the talk” - “Look, we’ll write you an excellent letter of introduction and recommendation…”
I guess employment law where you are is quite different from ours. Here in New Zealand “encouraging” someone to quit is called constructive dismissal, and it can cost employers a tidy sum.

I’ve mentioned I’m kind of on the fence regarding the wikileaks episodes. On one hand I’m very pro-military but OTOH I’m all for a more transparent government. This is one of the stories coming out of the leaks that should have been addressed years ago:
Iran’s Training for Iraqi Militants Outlined in Leaked Pentagon Documents
[Link: www.bloomberg.com…]
Iran provided extensive aid to Iraqi militias, such as training an operative who kidnapped American soldiers, according to classified U.S. military documents published yesterday.Almost 400,000 documents obtained by WikiLeaks.org include field reports from 2004 through 2009 describing Iranian backing for Iraqi Shiite militia. The papers provide details supporting warnings by U.S. officials of Iranian interference in Iraq.
In August 2005, for example, then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said that “weapons clearly, unambiguously from Iran” had been found in Iraq, and that Iran’s failure to prevent their transport across the border was “unhelpful.” In March 2006 Rumsfeld accused Iran of sending the Revolutionary Guards, an elite military unit, into Iraq to foment violence.
The documents, released in advance to the New York Times, the Guardian of the U.K., Germany’s Der Spiegel and Le Monde of France, were posted on the WikiLeaks website last night.
The very first time we could “prove” Iran had supplied materials and training that killed US soldiers….they should have been forced to pay a military price. Everytime an IED went off that we knew came from Iran, they should have lost a naval vessel, military facility, or equipment. Instead, we let them get away with killing americans because we were concerned with getting bad press.

You know, that’s something I consider a genuine leak. I know its illegal, but I can see someone with access to those documents being so frustrated that Iran could operate with impunity against Americans that they leak it. Same with the the documents concerning the American military’s refusal to investigate Iraqi torture.

Herald readers seeing end of road for Barney Frank
[Link: www.bostonherald.com…]
Republican Sean Bielat has seized the attention of Herald readers who see a chance for the upstart challenger to unseat Democrat incumbent U.S. Rep. Barney Frank.“I have been at several events across Wellesley and Newton in the past month and I can say I was actually shocked to see a lot of unhappy residents that were talking like maybe it needs a change,’’ said Mike.
“Beilat appears to me to be the ideal candidate to have a chance to defeat Frank,’’ said Johnny, a reader weighing in from L.A.
The Massachusetts Congressional races were the hot topic in yesterday’s Friday Throwdown on Bostonherald.com.
“He seems to be (making it a race),’’ said theFez of Bielat. “He needs to start talking about what he is going to do though and tone down on the Barney bashing. I think he’s beat that drum long enough.’’
I’d love to see Barney tossed out on his ass but I keep going back and forth on his chances of losing. If he wins, he wins by 12+….but he might not win at all.

I said off the bat that his statements were misguided, but not hostile in the way Rick Sanchez’s were IMHO. But I think we should ask ourselves a tough question here. Was it handled properly, or was a respected man treated like crap because he dared to break intellectual “bread” with the “enemy.”. it seems to me he may have been treated poorly for trying in his own way to be bipartisan.

I think in our country, if we have any sort of “state” media organs, there should be mandated diversity as far as the editorial direction of the network. There should be an ombudsman with clout who can monitor the programming. And if changes are necessary, make them. I think the GOPers trying to cut the funding are wrong and have chosen the wrong argument on that.

Quite Concur. I don’t think they even expect to actually defund NPR. At a guess, I’d say their plan is this:
1. Go after NPR to gain votes and take the House (maybe the Senate).
2. Pass a defund bill through the House and try to maneuver it through the Senate.
3. If the Senate Democrats block the bill, complain about that to fire up the base.
4. If the bill passes the Congress, Obama will veto it and they can then use that to bash Obama for being statist.
“Defund NPR!” is little more than a game.

It also reveals the bankruptcy of the GOP’s grasp on finances; NPR and its member stations are a model of efficiency when it comes to a government-organized group. NPR gets almost no funding from the government, and the member stations get only 16%. They should be being held up as a model of what works, and instead the GOP is now aiming at them as a target.

It has nothing to do with “what works” and everything to do with who NPR crossed. In my mind, NPR fired Juan Williams unjustly, for simply giving voice to fears that, while not really fair, are widespread and not born of bigotry. NPR is also seen as having been bribed by George Soros (who recently gave them money) into veering to the left and attacking Fox News. NPR is seen as the enemy by conservatives, so it is attacked. Fox is attacked for it’s abject hypocrisy - and not just by the left, the middle knows it is a joke too. Calling a “news” organisation out on being a shill which directly employs several past and potentially future candidates for president (all from one party) as “analysts” is fair game.

I’m sorry, DF, but what you just said makes no sense. The government has no power to defund NPR because they don’t fund them. The government could cut off funds to NPR and they would keep on trucking.
Do you feel like it is a good thing for reporters to give voice to fears, to talk about their lesser feelings? Is that what journalism is?

Who are you to dictate how a private charity is run? They break no laws, if their donors are happy with how’s it run that’s good enough for me. Go ahead and remove the 1-3% in indirect grants from the Federal government. After this I’m sure they’ll be more than made up for.

I feel that PBS is a positive force in our society. And I don’t want people there to lose their jobs. I worked at A PBS station at the start of my career. Like any organization, it has flaws, but generally is fine by me.
As you probably know, PBS is not NPR is not APM is not PRI. All the various public broadcasting entities are separate production and distribution organizations with distinct missions, and each competes with the other for programming slots on public radio stations.

I think the influence of George Soros is way overblown by the wingnuts. He does have some influence and money but the claim that Soros is responsible for firing Williams is absurd.
I don’t think Soros had anything directly to do with Williams’ firing. But I do think he targets his donations to support a leftward trend in politics in this country. That is his right, but I feel that pushing for such a trend is destructive. And I do feel that since the Soros angle is in play (even if only from wingnuts), they should disclose his support for MM in their articles. Even Fox News discloses if Newscorp or Rupert Murdoch is involved in a story they report.

George Soros has probably done more to fight against the old Communist regimes in Eastern Europe attempting to hold onto power (under different names, and sometimes not-so-different) in the modern day, and his reward is getting called a raving moonbat. He had the courage to fund Solidarity and other anti-communist movements before the fall of the USSR, as well.

He is also a convicted felon in France.
[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]
Insider trading conviction
In 1988, he was asked to join a takeover attempt of the French bank Société Générale. He declined to participate in the bid but later bought a number of shares in the company. French authorities began an investigation in 1989, and in 2002 a French court ruled that it was insider trading, a felony conviction as defined under French securities laws, and fined him $2.3 million, which was the amount that he made using the insider information.
Punitive damages were not sought because of the delay in bringing the case to trial. Soros denied any wrongdoing and said news of the takeover was public knowledge.[30]
His insider trading conviction was upheld by the highest court in France on June 14, 2006.[31] In December, 2006 he appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, claiming that the 14-year delay in bringing the case to trial precluded a fair hearing.[32]

Fox is attacked for it’s abject hypocrisy - and not just by the left, the middle knows it is a joke too. Calling a “news” organisation out on being a shill which directly employs several past and potentially future candidates for president (all from one party) as “analysts” is fair game.
I believe WIlliam’s termination was justified by the terms of his contract with NPR - as fearmongering is not their business, and while he is in their employ his public comments reflect on them.
Just curious, what was the terms of his contract?

The fact the view “may be common held” says more for the American psyche and base instincts than it does for regard for truth about the actual situation.

But the NPR statement is as follows, and they clearly seem to think he was off reservation -
“Tonight we gave Juan Williams notice that we are terminating his contract as a Senior News Analyst for NPR News.
“Juan has been a valuable contributor to NPR and public radio for many years and we did not make this decision lightly or without regret. However, his remarks on The O’Reilly Factor this past Monday were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a News Analyst with NPR.

Dude.
I’m quite serious. A lot of the criticism of Soros stems from anti-Semitic groups, and the old “Jewish conspiracy” libel. Mandy inadvertently— whatever her faults, she was no anti-Semite— linked to an anti-Semitic diatribe against Soros. A lot of what is written about him stems from anti-Semitic sources.
I feel that that is important.
Warren Buffet gives lots of donations to the Democratic Party, to individual Democrats, to ‘leftist’ groups, and yet we almost never hear about his influence. It’s almost always Soros. And the irony of attacking him as a big ol’ lefty after his decades-long campaign against communism is just a little hard for me to take.

I guess this goes to my questioning. Why was it even news enough to make the news in the first place. Up here (Canada) the whole O’Reily interview incident made the national news a few headlines in. I had the same sort of questions. Um why? I don’t think it was really that big a deal. For one, the right in the USA already hates The View regardless — short of Elisabeth Hasselbeck whom they do on occasion throw under the bus. Bill O’Reilly didn’t really care since it just helped add to his publicity (which translates into dollars). O’Reilly has interviewed Goldberg on his shows in the past and has given her a rough time.

Yes that’s fine but why is it interesting? And why is it interesting enough to keep bringing her up in discussions/arguments about other issues?
I mean if it wasn’t made part of the ‘news’ by people who filter the happenings in the world into the ‘new’ we consume would it still be as interesting? Is it news (and interesting) because it’s actually means something important to overall society or has it become more interesting because it made the ‘news’ to people beyond who watch the show.

It’s simple, really: The person running his mouth favors two things that conflict at times. TV personalities don’t try to resolve such conflicts of logic, since trying to do so bores the audience and inevitably gores someone’s sacred cow. So they just spout off without regard to logic or coherent policy.

In games where I get to make the choice, I usually save my psychopathic rampages for the 2nd or 3rd playthrough. First playthroughs are always plagued with OCD hand-wringing over how many starting points to put into which skills, in order to obtain a subjectively imperceptible but statistically significant 2% increase in critical hits (or similar).

Ok, I wondered about that because the chick in the beginning that teaches you shoot and craft items can die or be killed before she teaches you anything. I had to restart the game a few times because I kept killer her and then realized that I still didn’t understand the crafting elements of the game.

Maybe. But there isn’t much time left before election day. It may pop up as an election issue in the ending days but I doubt it will sway any votes. Everything will focus on these last two weeks. Yeah, I’m a little worried how much of the story I’m going to miss by killing everyone I meet. I suspect the game is worthy of a couple replays just to see the different choices to be made and the consequences.
The thing I like so much about Fallout 3 and NV is that you’re only given a generalized idea of why the world is the way it is. There’s so much room for your imagination to fill in the blanks. You start out in a world that is definitely intended to be a version of the US, where the unthinkable has happened. Everyone is at the throats of the people over the valley a half a mile away, and you can turn on the radio and listen to Cole Porter sing “Anything Goes”:
as you crawl along the irradiated ruins of grocery stores and schoolhouses.

Walter,
Regarding your trip to Orlando. If you want cool rides, you might consider Islands of Adventure instead. I thought the coasters and such were better than the Magic Kingdom. MK is really for kids in my opinion. Universal is the more “adult” park.
YMMV
Are they near by the Disney park? We are staying in a hotel right on the Disney property and I don’t have transportation (or tons of money for transportation)… are these parks accessible from Disney by some shuttles or something?

The music and atmosphere as great. I imagine some people might think the graphics aren’t flashy enough but they’re fine for me. I just notice my Fallout disc came with a little players manual. I’ll do some reading before I fire up the game again.

“It’s a Small World” if you want an awful tune to run through your head for eternity.
Disney, IIRC doesn’t have many adult rides.
Rockin’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror were pretty cool.

That attraction was originally at the New York Worlds Fair in 1964 (63?), then moved to Disney… it was sponsored by Pepsi I think… I stood in line for an hour and a half… and that tune has stuck with me since then.

Regarding Disney… I’ve always thought that Disney could make a gazillion dollars if they would open a “Disney Extreme” in Orlando.
Huge coasters, fast, thrill rides…
So the teenagers would want to go too…

I was going to say—I’m looking forward to the day I can go some place like Disney World and see what I want to see.
I would go to the Harry Potter theme park in Universal Studios, myself.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what the Republican congress ends up doing. I suspect lots of votes to defund NPR, outlaw Tides, arrest George Soros, impeach Obama and other silly crap. I just can’t imagine them using their time constructively to help the country.
Jim DeMint on the issues silly crap:
- Ban gay teachers
- Ban gay adoption
- Protect marriage from gays by amending the Constitution
- Protect our flag by amending the Constitution
- Deny jurisdiction to courts that won’t protect the Pledge of Allegiance

Ok… I just did a little Google-fu, looks like the parks are not close to each other to start with, I have no rented transportation for the 3 days, and I’m financially limited to probably staying on the Disney property and make use of the shuttles to Disney attractions…
That’s fine… since I’ve never been to a Disney park, I guess being there is better than not being there… I’ll have fun.

Looks like the first SC tax protest banner was even more ‘Islamic”:
Components of the current state flag were first seen in 1765, on a banner carried by South Carolina protesters of the Stamp Act. The banner that the protesters hoisted displayed three white crescents on a blue background.

That’s what I intend to do. Monday I’m splitting for the 82 dollar ticket for the Magic Kingdom, and Tuesday, we only have about 6 hours… but the girlfriend insists on purchasing 164 dollars worth of tickets (2) to spend some time at Epcot.
That’s the plan.

Pug named ‘Kook’ wakes owner, saves residents from fire
DENVER - The manager of an apartment building is crediting his dog with saving residents from an early morning fire, which badly damaged the building.
The pug, named Kook, woke Patrick Vigil up at 4 a.m., alerting him to the smoke which was filling his apartment.
“Yes, Kook, he was going crazy because they have that extra sense, evidently,” Vigil said. “And we thought he had to go to use the bathroom but it was kind of early but he needed to get out and he let us know that there was something-something wrong in the apartment.”

It’s a world of laughter and a world of tears,
It’s a world of hope and a world of fears,
There’s so much that we share,
That it’s time were aware,
It’s a small world after to all.
It’s a small world after all,
It’s a small world after all,
It’s a small world after all,
It’s a small, small world.
There is just one moon and one golden sun,
And smile means friendship to everyone.
Though the mountains divide and the oceans are wide,
It’s a small world after all.
It’s a small world after all,
It’s a small world after all,
It’s a small world after all,
It’s a small, small world.

Whoopi Goldberg’s judgement (see: Polanski) is a little suspect by me. But she has every right to defend him, although I doubt NPR will listen to her.

What I do find interesting is Whoopi made a big stink about O’Reilly’s Muslim remarks a few weeks ago when he was on The View (she even walked off the set), yet turns around and supports William’s remarks (on the same show), which were in the least as wrongheaded as O’Reilly’s.
I don’t think Whoopi is that big or consistent an intellectual force.

As you probably know, PBS is not NPR is not APM is not PRI. All the various public broadcasting entities are separate production and distribution organizations with distinct missions, and each competes with the other for programming slots on public radio stations.
Many PBS TV stations have radio affiliates (sister stations, if you will) that are NPR affiliates, so I see PBS and NPR as very similar entities.
