Quote of the Day

The usual right-wing violent macho fantasy crap
Wingnuts • Views: 37,911

From the website of Deputy District Attorney John Patrick Frey (Hardcore Gang Division, LA County, Compton), aka Patterico:

“we just chopped off Charles Johnson’s head and mounted it on a pike on our collective front lawn…”

(“Metaphorically,” of course.)

UPDATE at 1/24/11 7:21:15 pm

In addition to decapitating me, Deputy District Attorney Frey is now threatening to disembowel me and eat my innards. Also metaphorically.

Charles Johnson, I will metaphorically crush you. I will metaphorically disembowel you and eat your innards.

By the way, Patterico's real name was publicized by right wing blogs when they were attacking him for his very mild criticisms of Robert Stacy McCain. (Before I get accused of outing someone.)

"reloadingisnotahobby" does not use that nic for nothing. Even reloading, you would have to cast your own bullets and steal the lead and primers to get the cost that low. Cheaper than Dirt's lowest current price on ready-made .45 bullets for reloaders (just the bullets, not the cartridge) is about 25 cents each. The lowest for ready-made ammo is about twice that.

You can cast your own bullets from lead wheel weights. It's not terribly hard.

There's a lovely scene in John Adams where Abigail and the kids are casting musket balls for the war effort.

You know the drill: global warming isn’t happening, if it is happening then it’s not caused by human behavior, if it is caused by human behavior then we can’t do anything about it, if it is caused by human behavior and we can do something about it, then that something is too expensive, if it is caused by human behavior and we can do something about it that is not too expensive, then that something is not what Democrats are proposing. And Al Gore is fat, he flies too much, look at his electricity bill, and sometimes when he goes somewhere it snows there, which is very ironic.

I think they will be angry that a hero will be sitting next to their second-favorite target of hatred, Obama's wife. Again, the fact that they used a memorial service to attack Obama was rather instructive.

Seems a bit ironic that "Patterico" was involved in having Michael A. Hiltzik of the LA Times fired for posting on conservative blogs under different pseudonyms.

At Los Angeles Times, a Columnist Who Used a False Web Name Loses His Blog
By KATIE HAFNER
Published: April 24, 2006

In the last few years, newspapers around the country have been testing the waters of the seldom-restrained, often scrappy world of Web-based journalism by setting their reporters loose to write their own blogs.

Last week, the experiment backfired for The Los Angeles Times. The newspaper suspended the blog of one of its columnists after it was revealed that he had posted comments on the paper's Web site and elsewhere on the Web under false names.

Michael A. Hiltzik, 53, a business columnist and a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the paper, acknowledged using the names Mikekoshi and Nofanofcablecos not only in posts to his own blog, but on other Web sites as well.

In a statement on Mr. Hiltzik's blog and printed in the paper last week, The Los Angeles Times said Mr. Hiltzik's actions had violated the newspaper's ethics guidelines, "which requires editors and reporters to identify themselves when dealing with the public." That policy "applies to both the print and online editions of the newspaper."

The incident has underscored the difficulties that can arise when a newspaper gives free rein to staff writers on the Web. "You give up a lot of control. It requires an enormous amount of trust," said Mickey Kaus, a columnist for Slate.com.

Mr. Hiltzik's reputation at The Times is mixed. In 1993, while serving as a correspondent in Moscow, he was recalled to Los Angeles after it was discovered he had been reading his colleagues' e-mail messages. Six years later, he and a fellow Times writer, Chuck Philips, received a Pulitzer Prize for a series of articles on corruption in the entertainment industry.

Mr. Hiltzik has been writing his Golden State blog, which carries the same name as his newspaper column, since last fall. As a blogger, Mr. Hiltzik is often strident in his liberal views, and has engaged in public political scrapes with a number of conservative bloggers.

It was one such blogger, Patrick Frey, who exposed Mr. Hiltzik's anonymous postings. Mr. Frey, an assistant Los Angeles district attorney, maintains a conservative blog called Patterico's Pontifications. Last week, Mr. Frey wrote on his blog that Mr. Hiltzik had been posting to Web sites pseudonymously for two or three years. Shortly thereafter, The Times suspended the Golden State blog.

Continues.

Shouldn't these same ethical standards be applied to public (read government) deputy district attorneys and expended to included the type of rhetoric and behavior displayed by "Patterico" on numerous occasions? If he were a private attorney then there could be some wiggle room but where is the public trust in having a man like this involved in the prosecution of criminals for the citizens of Los Angeles county? Does the DA feel comfortable in employing an activist blogger and part time internet "rodeo clown"?

Cooley doesn't plan to give back $13,000 received during prosecution of oil company
October 23, 2010 | 6:34 pm

Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley on Saturday said he has no plans to return $13,000 in contributions to his attorney general's campaign from an oil company received while his office was prosecuting the firm for violating state environmental laws.

Cooley said his campaign staff is reviewing the matter, however. He emphasized that the donations from Warren E&P Inc., which operates oil wells near the Port of Los Angeles, had no influence on how his office handled the pending case.

Reports filed by Warren's parent company with the Securities and Exchange Commission show that county prosecutors have agreed to a nearly identical settlement to the one discussed by the Los Angeles city attorney's office under Democrat Rocky Delgadillo.

The district attorney's office inherited the case from the city attorney's office, which filed criminal charges against Warren in January 2008. The case was handed over to the district attorney's office after the firm's defense lawyer, Carmen Trutanich, was elected city attorney last year, taking over for Delgadillo.

Cooley said returning the donations would throw Warren E&P Inc. “under the bus” and imply that the company was trying to influence prosecutors, which he said would be unfair to both the company and his agency.

Continues.

re: #225 recusancy

Some here blame it on "intellectuals lecturing from their ivory towers".

The ivory tower is where society keeps people like me. It is better for society and it is better for me.

Though to be fair we are at a point now where America is so devolved and there is such a revolution of lowered educational expectations, that we are thrilled when the average American can program a microwave oven.

Turning seriously, the ivory tower, is where people know stuff like advanced mathematics, physics, engineering, biology, history and the great works of literature are assumed to have been read and cherished. The ivory tower used to be a metaphor that was said with some contempt, but the people showing the contempt at least knew enough to know what an actual education is.

These days, please. We have something like 40% who think that evolution didn't happen. We have something like 50% who think the GOP cares about the little guy. We have something like 30% who couldn't find Peru on a map.

The ivory tower - real education? I have no idea what the actual numbers are, but I would guess that 95% could not manage calculus, let alone actually advanced mathematics. 95% probably could not tell you anything meaningful about the Ming emperors or how they were different from the Han emperors. Maybe 80% could not manage a language other than English - unless they came here from another country. Hell, 50% can barely manage English. What percentage has even heard of a great English writer other than Shakespeare? How about some great French novelists - let alone read and enjoyed them?

Nah we are a nation that had so very much post war prosperity and has been insulated for so very long that we were able to safely shed the need for real education to survive (or so it seems) for a time. Soon, nations that value it, like China and India will eat our lunch.

Washington is the only capital in the civilized world today where there is a debate about whether or not we should take climate change seriously. We are the only nation that so despises its scientific class that it sells most of its best inventions to others to produce them. We are the only nation in the civilized world where there is a debate about evolution. We are the only nation in the civilized world with so much information so available for so many and used by so few.

If you think about it for half a second, the net is the greatest tool for data collection ever created. I wonder how much of it is used for porn. Is it 50%? 60%? I don't know. But I do know it is rather like being able to go to the Library at Alexandria and seeking out the Egyptian smut section.

No sir. We are so far removed from as a nation, from an actual Ivory Tower that even being able to manage a balanced checkbook is a mark of erudition.

Hey, I am not aiming below the belt. I'm not gunning for anyone here honest.

I think you misread me. No one needs to know everything. That is impossible. You don't complain that a brilliant programmer isn't a great poet or that a great novelist isn't up on topology or able to compose a fugue.

What I am complaining about is that the average American doesn't know anything to any depth. They don't know science past half remembered high school muddles (if they even accept the notion that science is correct). They barely know American history, let alone anyone else's. They can't - like you, program their VCR let alone use C/C++ or any of the more exotic languages. They have never read a great book that wasn't assigned to them in High school (if they even read those). They can't speak any languages other than English - and even that abysmally. They are not stupid, but have been allowed to live a life of utter intellectual atrophy.

How else would we have the politics we do if it were any other way?

True. However it used to be the standard of doing a bunch of things lightly at the college level was mathematics through calculus, a reasonable encounter with basic sciences and having read some of the great books.

These days it seems to be deft twittering skills and knowledge of reality tv shows.

The whole programing thing always bugged, mostly because I always seemed to program my relatives and friends VCRs. Couldn't stand the blinking. I think I figured out why it happens or happened. No one seemed to ever read or consider reading the damn instructions. The few that did said they didn't make any sense.

I notice lack of instruction reading all the time. It's not just with VCR's. I can't tell you how many times my Dad and Mom have complained about not being able to figure out their cellphones. "Did you look at the instructions?" I ask. No of course not, that would be too obvious.

Palestinian leaders abandoning ancestral claims to homeland: documents

Palestinian leaders have all but relinquished the claim of a Palestinian right to return to their ancestral homeland, according to the latest documents leaked to the Al-Jazeera news network and made public.

In a second batch of documents, Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas and his chief negotiators are shown in 2008 to have abandoned the historical claim, enshrined in the 1948 United Nations Resolution 194, and yielded as well on which Palestinians would be allowed to vote in a referendum on any final agreement reached with Israel.

On blogging from work:

Do I have more protection if I work for the government?
Yes. If you work for any level of government (also called a "public employer"), your employer's right to fire you is also limited by the First Amendment's protection of your right to free speech. However, your free speech rights as an employee are more limited than they are as a member of the general public. If you were to challenge your termination on First Amendment grounds, courts would balance your employer's legitimate interest in delivering efficient government services against your interest as a citizen in commenting on a matter of public concern. So if you blog about something important to the public, you have greater protection. But if your blog's content could disrupt the workplace, your protection diminishes. Government employees also enjoy some legal protections against being disciplined, which vary based on the level of government you work for. In California, for example, a public employee is entitled to notice and a hearing prior to termination. See Skelly v. State Personnel Board, 15 Cal.3d 194 (1975). You may also find the Federal Employees Legal Survival Guide helpful. [Link: www.eff.org...]

Oh, sorry I'm not quite punctual enough. I like to browse LGF sometimes while I'm taking a break from studying. Responding to blog comments only happens in between chapter sections.re: #298 BigPapa

Good point. Now go to the stalker blogs and tell them.
Please link to where you proselytize them to STFU and quit talking about LGF.

Yeah, that will sure be productive. You might as well appeal to the Borg Collective. Unlike Geller et al. I don't believe you guys are so far gone as to be incapable of reasoned introspection.

Charles Johnson, you are a hypocritical, dishonest lowlife punk. This post of yours guarantees that I’ll be doing a new post about you every single time I find out about another lie of yours.

Every. Single. Time.

In doing so, Charles Johnson, I will metaphorically crush you. I will metaphorically disembowel you and eat your innards. But I will not do a single physical thing to you. Nor will I encourage others to.

I consider the study of history and literature to be essential (which should be clear from all my other posts). I have no beef at all with the fields. In fact it is my very firm belief that if Americans valued history in particular, they would have a sense of cause and effect. They would remember things like when Thatcher and Reagan were all for taking action about climate change. They would understand the pitfalls of populism and particularly, populist, religious, political movements that are led by the ruling, moneyed class. If people respected literature and culture, they might be less apt to want ot kill each other by noticing that humans from whatever background are more alike than different. That said, however high minded and true to my heart that sentiment is, I still firmly want to believe that I could not produce viable offspring with a teabagger female and that indeed, tebags really are another species - a sort of morlock if you will.

Well, what we have here is a threat display from a weenie male who is overcompensating for his fears. He correctly perceives that with the Arizona shootings, the fickle American populace is beginning to turn on his icons and his inchoate rage.

He knows his entire life is based on fear. Fear of the other. Fear of blacks. Fear of the more educated. Fear of the immigrant taking his job (though not the corporate bastards outsourcing it, or the wall street goons jerry rigging the economy). He is afraid of a technological world he does not understand.

He senses "power" in his hive mind of fellow goose stepping sycophants.

But something that challenges the legitimacy of his rage and only shows him to be a silly ignorant git drives right to the core of the very real lack of manhood that creates his fears int eh first place. Therefore, he must overcompensate and beat his chest in an impotent display of rage. If he were an ape - and lets face it, he is, and some of us are closer to our ancestors than others - he would be flaring his nostrils and flinging poo.

preamble: so I really don't get the whole memory hole wars thing: Did LGF criticize someone for blocking a google cache or a (insert tech term here) while also blocking it on LGF? Or not? Or something else? I honestly cannot follow the threads.

But now the main point, let me get this straight:
-They are suggesting LGF said or implied that Glenn Beck was telling his audience to go out and shoot people in the head.
- Their proof is that CJ characterized Glenn Beck's comment as a "vile threat"
- and also that CJ called it a “crazed, incoherent rant”; “disgusting comments”; and “completely freaking insane" and that it's without a possible justifying context and that politisomething was making excuses for a rant involving shooting people in the head
- and that CJ said he would go after the guy's job by saying his comments were unprofessional

Working backwards: saying someone is unprofessional is not an insinuation that the speaker will go after his job.

Whether the rant is crazed, incoherent, disgusting, insane, and unjustifiable has nothing to do with whether it is a threat. I have no idea why this is cited as support. the rant does involve shooting people in the head, so that's an accurate characterization.

Calling it a vile threat: OK, so a threat sounds like a statement to someone that you will harm them in a way that you reasonably could harm them (generically speaking).

So my reading is that the only possible threats in the transcript regard either shooting "them" (the media and out of touch washington politicians) in the head or being shot by them. Being shot by them, although an articulated threat, is not a threat Glenn Beck made, but instead a threat he is warning about.

So basically the entire article comes down to whether characterizing Glenn's utterly stupid rant as a "vile threat" is the same as "implying that Beck was calling for violence"?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I can't believe I wasted my time trying to figure this out! The whole thing is as twisted and inane and catty as high school girls' gossip.

And as for taking a trophy of C.J.'s head, is someone seriously congratulating himself for winning(?) this debate? Just what did they win? Is there a playoff and superbowl for nitpicking minutiae?

As much as I enjoy reading LGF, I will never understand why this stuff is relevant. I really don't understand the discourse between LGF and other blogs at all.

[Link: money.cnn.com...]

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry likes to tell Washington to stop meddling in state affairs. He vocally opposed the Obama administration's 2009 stimulus program to spur the economy and assist cash-strapped states.

Perry also likes to trumpet that his state balanced its budget in 2009, while keeping billions in its rainy day fund.

But he couldn't have done that without a lot of help from ... guess where? Washington.

Turns out Texas was the state that depended the most on those very stimulus funds to plug nearly 97% of its shortfall for fiscal 2010, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Texas, which crafts a budget every two years, was facing a $6.6 billion shortfall for its 2010-2011 fiscal years. It plugged nearly all of that deficit with $6.4 billion in Recovery Act money, allowing it to leave its $9.1 billion rainy day fund untouched.

At the Texas GOP Convention, back in June:

PERRY: Well I think it's really important that the people of the state recognize that good, conservative, fiscal discipline was in place in January of 2009 when we had that legislative session, and kicking off and finishing five months later, and we left eight-plus billion dollars in a Rainy day fund. We didn't spend all the money. A very, very important principle. Don't spend all the money.

We saw the dark clouds that were forming on the horizon because of the Bailout and the Stimulus dollars that were being spent, and we realized that that was going to be a travesty -- a train wreck.

Little brother just emailed. He has it on his nook and his ten year-old daughter started reading it. He wanted to know if he should stop her and make her wait.

Both my Sci-fi nut little sister and I said YES! and then made some suggestions. I suggested the Tiffany Aching series from Terry Pratchett.

It gets pretty dark. Okay for adults, but not children.

It's not a matter of fear, its a matter of the other side smearing them. But I don't think it will happen, as Planned Parenthood is much more savvy in matters such as this. They've been above the radar for decades, and thus are smart enough not to fall for some amateur 'sting'. By contrast, ACORN was used to adversaries trying to make them look foolish and they had not trained their staffs to deal with such a situation.

re: #478 simoom

13.4b I think? I'd imagine his anti-stimulus rhetoric had something to do with how unlikely it is there will be a follow-on targeted state bailout.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Texas is facing a multi-billion dollar shortfall due to insane budgetary decisions by Perry and the Republican-run legislature - this year will be a minimum of between $15-27 Billion (the number is greatly in flux due to not knowing what franchise tax income will garner this year).
On the chopping block: Texas' Public Libraries, cuts in Public Education
(including a proposal to completely ELIMINATE the 12th Grade)

Given the dire emergency that Texas state finances are in, Governor Perry of course is fast-tracking legislation to correct this.
Whoops. That fast track legislation is to force women to get a sonogram before being receiving pregnancy termination services.

Texas gov fast-tracks abortion measure, ignores budget crisis

Speaking before an anti-abortion rally at the state Capital on Saturday, the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Gov. Rick Perry told the crowd: “It’s pretty hard to imagine people of good conscience sitting idly by through this, and in Texas we haven’t,” the San Antonio Express News reports.
The bill is backed by Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.
Perry’s announcement on the abortion measure puts it on a short list of four other items he has granted emergency status to and all are hot-button topics in the state as well as the nation: a voter identification bill, putting an end to policies not requiring police to check immigration status of those they stop or arrest, reforming eminent domain, and seeking a US constitutional amendment that would authorize a balanced federal budget.

For Perry, disenfranchising minority voters, a version of Arizona's "Papers Please" immigration legislation, making corporate/state seizure of private property easier, and the Tea Party favorite "Federal Balanced Budget Amendment" are the do-first items of the day.

Keep in mind that under previous administrations, Texas Public education was completely solvent, due to the state lottery funds being specifically directed toward it. This policy changed under (then) Governor Bush, then greatly expanded upon by Gov. Perry, who directed that those funds be placed in the state General Fund, which meant it could be spent on any pet project they liked.

618 Gretchen G.Tiger  Mon, Jan 24, 2011 11:11:46pm

Do any of the men in the anti-abortion movement understand what it means for them?

You can't totally take away a women's reproductive rights. More and more will start saying NO!

Which may be what the relligious fanatics think should happen, but don't think it will happen in their household.

gah! Sonograms!
