Given that the State of Hawaii says they’ve released everything state law lets them release, what else could Obama do, and how is he avoiding doing it?

Basically, they’ve set the bar at a point that he simply can’t reach, where the only means of meeting their demands is violating the law, which would be grounds for his impeachment anyway.
Personally, I look forward to the Supreme Court battle(s) involving any state legislatures stupid enough to pass birther laws aimed at keeping him off their ballots.

re: #2 SanFranciscoZionist
For the last couple of years, ever since Obama became a serious candidate, the birthers have charged that he has paid his lawyers huge sums of money to hide his birth certificate and all his other records. The sum keeps going up. It was one million, then a more precise sounding $1.4 million, and now it is two million dollars, and sometimes “more than two million”.
The c. $2million figure is arrived at largely from thin air, but sometimes there is an airy connection attempted to a total billings figure from a law firm retained in some capacity for several years.
Obama For America has paid the law firm Perkins Coie $2.3 million since they announced his campaign for president according to the federal election commission. There is no real reason to doubt that is true. And Perkins Coie has defended the campaign against eligibility suits, whether filed by birthers or on whatever other grounds. However, it is very hard to imagine that all those fees went purely to defending against birther lawsuits. Common sense would dictate that there are many other reasons a PAC would need to retain the services of a law firm. Ironically even if the entire 2.3 million really did go to defending against birther lawsuits then all that proves is that the birthers forced him to waste all that money defending against frivolous lawsuits - hardly a smoking gun.

I imagine complying with election law is complicated — the financial disclosure forms alone, for a guy with 3 million donors, must be extensive. A hundred thousand paid staff, and their expense accounts and income tax withholding and social security. Vehicle and aircraft rentals and insurance on those rentals.

Right, not to mention everything from filing documents for candidacy to signing leases for offices and contracts for advertising, legal documents for campaign financing rules, audits of money, etc.
Some of the payments to Perkins Coie were as far back as Oct. 2008 which could include work they were doing in Aug. 2008 or even earlier. The campaign has spent just over 2.3 million at a law firm who was incidentally responsible for defending eligibility suits (among the many other things they probably did) and the birthers claim that he has spent just over 2 million defending his eligibility. Maybe I am just seeing this as something simpler than it really is but my take is that the birthers’ claim whatever the current total amount spent at Perkins Coie is entirely due to birther-related issues. I don’t think there is a reasonable basis for the claim since the entire premise of the birther issue is unreasonable to begin with. As the tab at Perkins Coie goes up, the number the birthers claim seems to roughly track along with that amount. This pro-birther piece on World Nut Daily seems to corroborate this theory. They are just taking the grand total Obama has spent on all legal representation and claiming, with no real basis, that the whole amount was due to eligibility suits.

Yep, they want to play both sides by asserting they’re not a birther…but they think he’s hiding something. It’s their way of “framing the argument” by asserting that it’s Obama who should be trying to prove he’s got nothing to hide, not theirs to prove he’s hiding something.

You can’t get any closer because it is sealed off with a glass partition. I looked at the street below and realized too things immediately: The range was very short, much shorter than I had been led to believe, and a target in a car would have been receding in almost a straight line, that is, visually stationary and far too close for bullet drop to matter with a high velocity rifle. It would have been a a very easy shot.
Then I started to compare what conspiracy theorists said about the Warren report to what was actually there. Among other things, I realized that practically every conspiracy theorist flat out lies about the impossibility of the “magic bullet’s” path. They assume, and their illustrations invariably show, Governor Connally sitting directly in front of the President, making it impossible for the same bullet to have caused the attributed injuries to both men. In fact, Connally was sitting below the President and slightly to his left, in which case the bullet path lines up perfectly. This is obvious from simple visual examination of the car itself.

The first thing everyone notices about Dealey Plaza is how small an area it is. For some reason, photographs don’t convey it.
I used to be a huge JFK assassination conspiracy theorist. I know most of the ‘arguments’ backward and forward, and I like to believe (correctly or not) that it gives me a bit of insight into the conspiracy theorist mindset. Hopefully, it inoculated me a bit against that kind of thinking.
Although I don’t hold the X-Files view any more, it’s still damned eerie to wander around Dealey Plaza, for some reason.

The range was very short, much shorter than I had been led to believe, and a target in a car would have been receding in almost a straight line, that is, visually stationary and far too close for bullet drop to matter with a high velocity rifle. It would have been a a very easy shot.

Bill Maher: ‘Obama is a Terrible Negotiator - Does He Not Even Know a Jew?’
BILL MAHER: Obama said this week, I heard him a couple of times saying, “You know what? We met the Republicans what they asked, and then we gave them more.” That’s like your lawyer saying to you, “You know, I went into the chambers with the judge and the prosecutor, and my first offer was 40 years to life for you. And I think I can get your tailgating charge moved up to manslaughter. And that’s my first offer.” What is wrong with these people? He is a terrible negotiator. Does he not even know a Jew?Moments later, in a sketch about shows that could replace the exiting Glenn Beck on Fox News, Maher suggested Joe Lieberman do a program called, “Morning Jew.”

Maher can be so clueless. Obama’s actually a great negotiator. OK, not all the time but he did rather well during the budget impasse. So now the right is mad at Boehner and Obama of course but during my reading last night I notice that mane on the left are pissed off at the compromise. Meaning, he struck middle ground through negotiation. Emanuel and Axelrod are Jewish but I don’t know what that has to do with anything other than stereotyping on the part of Maher.

“Bowling for Columbine”
I can’t find a link to it, but I’ve seen an interview with Matt Stone (co-creator of South Park) wherein he goes into some detail about how Moore pulled a Breitbart with the interview of Stone (who lived in Littleton, Co.) he shot for Bowling for Columbine. Their disgust over that was the reason they portrayed him as a mustard-smeared, hotdog-scarfing suicide bomber in “Team America”.

He was also blatantly dishonest at points. He cut and pasted Heston’s speeches to darken Heston’s reputation. He also used his cartoon ‘historical’ section to libel the NRA. In it, he noted the NRA was founded in the same year the KKK Act (which was aimed at suppressing the Klan) was passed. “Just a coincidence?”, he asked, implying that it was not. In fact, the National Rifle Association was founded by former Union officers and supported the rights of blacks to bear arms, seeing that as a way to help them preserve their rights. The Israelis know who they are looking for. It’s either that or continue to dodge rockets & mortars fired into your own cities. There isn’t much of a choice. Israel can’t count on the UN to help stop the rockets from falling.
3 mortar shells hit western Negev
Three mortar shells were fired from northern Gaza Sunday morning, landing in various areas in Eshkol Regional Council. No injuries were reported.
One of the rockets, which were fired around 6 am, hit a power cable, causing a partial blackout in some of the Council’s communities.
The rocket fire breached the relatively quiet night, which followed a weekend of shelling – over 120 rockets and mortar shells were fired on Israel’s south by Gaza terror groups.

With or without birtherism, Palin was nuts - we all knew that.
*BUT*, I fear all of this may be a ploy. Palin, Bachmann, Trump and others are simply expendable attack dogs. They enable more serious Republicans further up the food chain to attack Obama on an issue they know is illegitimate, without “getting their own hands dirty”. None of the birthers will become President. The birthers are just there to stoke fear and hatred, to the convenient of others who can step up later and appear “rational”, because once the bar has been reduced so low, anything a future Republican Presidential candidate says or do will exceed expectation. Bush was a master of this tact.

It’ll cut their numbers way back. These are not homemade rockets right now. These are BM-21s, military grade. Go house-to-house and you’ll find them and then they can be destroyed. There’s no way to win a final victory, the most Israel can do is keep the terrorists cut back and wait for sanity to someday emerge.

First homosexual caveman found
Archaeologists have unearthed the 5,000-year-old remains of what they believe may have been the world’s oldest known gay caveman.
The male body – said to date back to between 2900-2500BC – was discovered buried in a way normally reserved only for women of the Corded Ware culture in the Copper Age.
The skeleton was found in a Prague suburb in the Czech Republic with its head pointing eastwards and surrounded by domestic jugs, rituals only previously seen in female graves.
“From history and ethnology, we know that people from this period took funeral rites very seriously so it is highly unlikely that this positioning was a mistake,” said lead archaeologist Kamila Remisova Vesinova.
“Far more likely is that he was a man with a different sexual orientation, homosexual or transsexual,” she added…
Interesting.

The simplest explanation is usually (but certainly not always) the best one.
Why would they bury a man - gay or not - like a woman? Is there any evidence that their culture considered a gay man more like a woman than a man? How much evidence is there that men were always buried one way, and women always buried a different way? Perhaps this illustrates that the previous assumptions were incorrect.
The story makes many assumptions without backing any of them up.
SURE, it could be completely accurate. But it sets off my bullshit detector. If it needs recalibrating, then that’s my problem.

The New York real estate mogul didn’t stop with questions about the birth certificate. Trump also claimed the president’s first book was ghostwritten by a domestic terrorist.“Bill Ayers wrote ‘Dreams From My Father,’” Trump told me. “I have no doubt about it. That first book was total genius and helped get him elected. But you can tell Obama did the second book himself because it read like it was written by somebody of average intelligence with a high school education.”
Scarborough also seems to be making some sort of comparison between Trump and Reagan.

Examples of Palestinian Authority Incitement
Incitement against Israel, which frequently turns into genuine anti-Semitic incitement, is an inseparable part of the fabric of life in the Palestinian Authority. Thus, anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic messages are regularly heard in both the private and official media and in mosque sermons, and are studied in school textbooks.
Terrorists are given an honored status and become models for emulation in Palestinian society, both in the media and via ceremonies held by insitutions affiliated with the PA.
Institutionalized and systematic incitement against Israel has never ceased in the PA,even during the height of the diplomatic process in the 1990s.
Examples from Recent MonthsOn 9.3.11, Abu Mazen’s advisor Sabri Saidam, delivered a speech in which he emphasized that Palestinian weapons must be turned towards Israel. He demanded that the Palestinian people be attentive to the living conditions of martyrs’ families and said that the anniversary of the death of Dalal Mughrabi (one of the perpetrators of 1978 coastal highway massacre) should be marked by inaugurating a square in her name in the city of El-Bireh.
On 6.3.11, the PA’s official newspaper, Al Hayat Al-Jadida, published an item to the effect that the management of a youth club in Ramallah planned to hold a soccer tournament in memory of Wafa Idris, a suicide bomber. On 9.2.11, the official Palestinian television station broadcast a clip from a campaign entitled “Women as Exemplars”, during which Dalal Mughrabi (see above) was extolled. In the summer of 2010, several children’s summer camps were named after her.
On 24.1.11, the Governor of Jenin issued a Presidential Grant worth $2,000 to the family of Palestinian terrorist, Khaldoun Samoudi, who was killed while trying to detonate two bombs against IDF soldiers at the Beka’ot Crossing.
On 2.1.11, Al Hayat Al-Jadida reported that Azzam Al-Ahmed, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, attended a gathering on the 46th anniversary of the establishment of Fatah, held in the village of Turah, south-west of Jenin, during which models of settlement buildings were blown up. He reviewed terrorist attacks that had been perpetrated by Fatah and said that, ” Fatah is a mass movement which believed in popular revolution and wrested its right to use all means of resistance in order to achieve its aim.”
On 30.12.10, Al Hayat Al-Jadida reported that Israel aspired to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque in order to build the Third Temple on its ruins.
On 26.10.10, Palestinian television broadcast a documentary about the work of Palestinian medical teams including a fictitious scene in which an Israeli soldier shoots a Palestinian in the head.
On 6.10.10, Al Hayat Al-Jadida carried an interview with Palestinian Minister Amr Aloul in which the latter said that Israel is, “An apartheid state that carries out state terrorism against the Palestinians.

On 10.9.10, official Palestinian television broadcast a short film in which it was said that Jewish prayer at the Western Wall is, “a sin and impurity.”On 21.6.10, official Palestinian television broadcast a children’s program in which it was saoid that, “The Jews are our enemies,” and that, “Israeli soldiers are wild animals.”
On 28.5.10, official Palestinian television broadcast a report on the family of a Palestinian security prisoner, during which her nieces were interviewed and said that they wanted to bear arms against Israel.
The “History of the Arabs and the World in the 20th Century” 12th-grade textbook, used in the PA, teaches about World War II. It includes Nazi ideology but does not mention the Holocaust at all.
On 10.3.10, Al Hayat Al-Jadida reported that the Palestinian Authority had postponed the inauguration of the Dalal Mughrabi Square in Ramallah following an official Israeli protest. This did not prevent dozens of young people from unofficially dedicating the square.A spokesman for the Palestinian security services said that the dedication of the Square had been postponed, “for technical reasons and not at Israel’s request.” He added that, “Neither israel nor anyone else is capable of preventing us from being proud of our history.” PA Minister of Culture Saham Al-Barghouti said that, “It is our right to honor our martyrs and name a street after the martyr Dalal Mughrabi on the anniversary of her martyrdom. It is the right of the Palestinian people. However, the Israelis’ interference with this right indicates how the Israelis violate our rights.”
On 27.12.09, official Palestinian television reported that President’s Office Director-General Tayib Abd A-Rahim presented condolences, on behalf of PA Chairman Abu Mazen, to the families of the three terrorists who were killed by the IDF after murdering Rabbi Meir Avshalom Chai. He gave the families condolence telegrams from Abu Mazen and told them to acknowledge them as martyrs of the Palestinian revolution. He said, on Abu Mazen’s behalf, that “The occupation authorities perpetrated an action that had been planned for some time and was the cold-blooded assassination of Fatah activists, which contravenes morality and the repeated, false claims about the apparent morality of the IDF. Without doubt, the occupation authorities perpetrated a wild and barbaric assassination, maliciously and in cold blood.”

Palestinian Authority Honors Killer of Elderly Jews
The Palestinian Authority has honored the terrorist responsible for the “Passover Massacre,” a 2002 bombing of Netanya’s Park Hotel that killed more than 30 mostly elderly Israelis attending a Seder. The Israeli government is terming the “gift” from its Palestinian counterpart as “a bizarre and troubling way to mark the upcoming Jewish holiday of festival of Passover.”
“Despite an often voiced Palestinian commitment to end the glorification of terrorists and incitement to violence,” Palestinian Minister of Prisoner Affairs Issa Karake on March 28 gave the family of Hamas terrorist Abbas Al-Sayed “an official, festive plaque, in celebration of the anniversary of the massacre,” said the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
Al-Sayed had planned the Park Hotel bombing down to the minutest details, the statement added, helping bomber Abdel-Basset Odeh check his explosives, write a will, and make his ‘martyrdom’ video.
It is the latest, and perhaps most disturbing, example in a Palestinian campaign of honoring terrorists. Days before saluting Al-Sayed, Palestinian Media Watch reported, Karake honored female suicide bombers to mark International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad also saluted female terrorists who aided or participated in suicide bombings on local radio.
That afternoon, he condemned a bombing that had just occurred at a Jerusalem bus stop, saying that such “shameful” attacks in the past had caused “heavy damage” on the Palestinian cause.
Sporting events and social events are also frequently named after suicide bombers, such as a March 31st soccer tournament and a March 30th karate championship.
Palestinian TV has also glorified suicide bombing. Several broadcasts in 2010 saw mothers of suicide bombers praising the action of their children and calling for more attacks. On September 24, 2010, a channel linked to the governing Fatah party featured an interview with the mother of a ‘martyr.’ “If I were young and could bear children who would fight the way my children fought, and another generation of my children could arise, I would do it,” she stated. An April interview for the same station featured a mother saying that her “glory and honor is that my son is a Shahid [martyr].”
The promotion of violence on official television stations reflects its popularity in Palestinian culture. A recent poll by the Palestinian Authority’s daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, found that 32% of Palestinians supported the March 11th murder of a settler family. The terrorist slit the throats of a baby, small children, and their parents.
Lovely bunch of folks out there.

Same thing with Michael Moore. He’s dishonest (at best), and he pisses me off thoroughly because, just like Bill Maher, sooner or later he makes a really good point that I can’t argue with, which makes me hate him even more for some reason.
I know almost nothing about Maher, except that when I was tabling for my local Israel group, a lady came by and asked us for some info, because Bill Maher had always said GREAT things about Israel, but now her son was hearing all these AWFUL things about Israel at his college, and that wasn’t what Bill Maher had said at all, so she was reading up so she would know what to tell the kid.
So I have a vaguely favorable impression of his record on Israel which may be entirely skewed, since it came from this one lady at a street fair.

Saying that gun culture created Klebold and Harris was complete bullshit. It also undermines the nature of mental health science. It’s like saying pornography creates sexual predators. It’s also not far from those that said that “Marylin Manson” created the two.
The guy who wrote what’s supposed to be a very good book about Columbine says his take is that Klebold was a sociopath, and Harris followed after him.
I suspect they were the kind of pair who would have done it with axes in 1650 if they had to.

How many enemies will you add, that sorta thing.I think its a bad idea, and not much good will come from it.
Well, the option to kicking in doors at gunpoint, which is what will probably actually happen, is that Israel takes out as much of Hamas’ new infrastructure from the air as they can.
Which will mean civilian casualties, even with roof knocking, and other precautions.

re: #184 negativ
For one thing:
The simplest explanation is usually (but certainly not always) the best one.
Why would they bury a man - gay or not - like a woman? Is there any evidence that their culture considered a gay man more like a woman than a man? How much evidence is there that men were always buried one way, and women always buried a different way? Perhaps this illustrates that the previous assumptions were incorrect.
The story makes many assumptions without backing any of them up.
SURE, it could be completely accurate. But it sets off my bullshit detector. If it needs recalibrating, then that’s my problem.
There are groups, Native American I believe, where some men choose to live as women, and take husbands. I don’t know if you could describe them as a gay, or transgendered, or what. It’s a religious thing in the culture, IIRC. They’re probably guessing from things like that.

Looks like Trump met with one of the Arizona Birther bill legislators on Friday. They like to dance around the Birther issue and pretend their legislation has nothing to do with the President, but this meeting seems to have dropped the mask:
[Link: thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com…]
In his latest embrace of the birther strategy, Mr. Trump has invited Tea Party leaders and a legislator from Arizona to his office in Manhattan on Friday morning to discuss a bill moving through the Arizona legislature that would require candidates for president to prove that they are natural born citizens.
…
“Of course I was surprised, who wouldn’t be?” said the legislator, Representative Carl Seel. “I’m honored to get the ability to meet with him and discuss it, and I want to thank him for being such a supporter of this issue.”
…
Kelly Townsend, a founder of the Greater Phoenix Tea Party, said Mr. Trump told them that he was interested in learning more about the legislation in Arizona. The bill, which has been approved by committees of the House and Senate, allows great latitude to the secretary of state in denying a presidential candidate a spot on the ballot, saying that the secretary can do so if he or she believes that the documents do not prove citizenship.
…
“It’s not a birther bill,” Ms. Townsend said. “It’s not about Mr. Obama. It’s about preventing any questions from coming up in the future, putting something in place so no one could question it.”But a release from Mr. Seel’s office about the planned meeting noted that Mr. Trump “has brought the issue of President Barack Obama failing to provide a birth certificate front and center recently.”

There was also the legal contract of affrerement in medieval Europe, which was used for sexual and non-sexual male-male unions. Some cultures find ways of dealing with it, some don’t. I see no reason to believe that tolerance of same sex relationships is a new thing on the human scene, it’s just novel from our own recent perspective.

The problem with Gaza is it’s very small, and there is nowhere for people to go. Israel is one one side, the others are Egypt and the sea. Folks can’t vote with their feet. Israel doesn’t want to take control of the area again, neither does Egypt, who originally owned it. It’s a fairly populous urban area, although not nearly as densely peopled as some reporters like to claim. (Less population density than Tel Aviv. Or Rio. Or London. Or Manila..the list goes on for quite some time.) Hamas is literally dug in, and they have weapons suppliers and a regular supply of aid of various types coming in, which frees them up to pursue their real avocation of harrying Israel with missiles and depositing fortunes in Swiss banks.
It’s a mess. It interferes with any possibility of getting a functioning Palestinian state going, it interferes with Israel’s national security, it’s a drag on Israel’s relationship with Egypt, and it is an ongoing PR nightmare for Israel. And the whole damn thing is a hundred and forty-six square miles. It’s like freaking Andorra, if Andorra were owned and operated by a terrorist organization.

re: #291 kragar (proud to be kafir)
One thing I’ve realized after thinking about my taxes, looking closely at the tax rates and running hypotheticals of what I’d have to earn per hr. in order to truly (for example) double my net (after tax) purchasing power … is that our so called progressive tax system isn’t so progressive.
In other words, the marginal value of some person’s hour of their life which they trade for money, if they say earn $30,000/yr, is a whole lot less than the marginal value for someone who makes $150,000/yr. In the latter case the marginal tax rate does not change, but in the former case the tax rate changes significantly (especially when including some states’ tax rates.)

Chief Superintendent Alasdair Robinson said the device, which was stored inside a wheelie bin, was “sophisticated and substantial”.

No. What I’m saying is that the relative (to one’s own previous income) benefit of increasing income suffers a negative feedback, and more so, for those who make less money.
In other words, it seems to me a tax system which is based on the idea that one’s responsibility to one’s own society increases in proportion to one’s own wealth would not be a system with (1) discreet tax brackets, and (2) a “top” bracket at all.

Can someone explain to me what Obama is actually spending money on when they refer to two million dollars or whatever it is?
Given that the State of Hawaii says they’ve released everything state law lets them release, what else could Obama do, and how is he avoiding doing it?
I have not been able to find any information that might explain what that $2 million figure is all about. The only thing a Google search has pointed to is birther websites that keep repeating that line unsourced. So it probably was made up out of thin air.

I think that we’ve reached the point where if Obama and the state of Hawaii (it’d take both’s permission) allowed a team of people access to the deep archives where they were allowed to take samples of the document to run tests (age of paper and ink), it STILL wouldn’t convince people.

Mexican drug cartels targeting and killing children
[Link: www.washingtonpost.com…]
In Mexico’s brutal drug war, children are increasingly victims, innocents caught in the crossfire, shot dead alongside their parents — and intentionally targeted.According to U.S. and Mexican experts, competing criminal groups appear to be killing children to terrorize the population or prove to rivals that their savagery is boundless, as they fight over local drug markets and billion-dollar trafficking routes to voracious consumers in the United States.
“It worries us very much, this growth in the attacks on little children. They use them as a vehicle to send a message,” said Juan Martin Perez, director of the Child Rights Network in Mexico. “Decapitations and hanging bodies from bridges send a message. Killing children is an extension of this trend.”
The children’s rights group estimates that 994 people younger than 18 were killed in drug-related violence between late 2006 and late 2010, based on media accounts, which are incomplete because newspapers are often too intimidated to report drug-related crimes.

Drafting a presidential candidate is tougher than it sounds
[Link: www.washingtonpost.com…]
Max Eden, a senior at Yale University, spent summer 2008 stumping for Barack Obama. He spent summer 2010 souring on the president over deficit spending and what he calls Obama’s “fancy rhetoric and empty promises.”And then this thought came to him: Wouldn’t it be great if there could be a Republican candidate in 2012 who was a serious person, not a cartoon, and was serious about addressing our long-term structural deficit?
So began the Student Initiative to Draft Daniels.
Eden said he plans to gather 10,000 signatures and deliver them by the end of the month to Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who has said he’ll make up his mind after the state legislature adjourns April 29. But Eden admits his “gut is feeling nervous” about whether he and his Yale buddies will persuade Daniels to run.
Max is obviously a very smart young man!

As near as I can tell, Romney and Huntsman are the only two members of the possible field who’ve unequivocally denied the birther position.
They’re also both Mormons which would give them problems in the evangelical South, and they have other issues that the current base wouldn’t go for. Romney is hated for Romneycare and for being a flip-flopping sleazebag opportunist. And Huntsman would have to spend the entire primary explaining why he resigned as Governor of Utah to go work with the Seekrit Mooslim Kenyan Overlord as his ambassador to China.
I think that we’ve reached the point where if Obama and the state of Hawaii (it’d take both’s permission) allowed a team of people access to the deep archives where they were allowed to take samples of the document to run tests (age of paper and ink), it STILL wouldn’t convince people.
God could appear on the White House lawn, wave his hand, and show the exact moment of Barack Obama’s birth in a Hawaii hospital and these birther idiots would still demand proof. It’s not about the birth certificate and it never has been. It’s about a group of people who still can’t accept that the young black guy beat the old white guy to become POTUS. It’s why they’re so hell-bent on turning him into an “other” or some kind of foreigner.
On the other hand, I can hardly wait till the Republican candidates present their “long form” birth certificates to a handful of states that have passed birther laws only to be told they are ineligible since the hospital trophy document is not the birth certificate.
I don’t understand how this is even still going on. Didn’t Congress settle this issue for both McCain and Obama back in 2008?

Good morning lizards!
This is from an email I got from my aunt this morning:
Proud to be from Jersey….
After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York archeologists
found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the
conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more
than 100 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a
California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a
story in the LA Times read: “California archaeologists, finding traces
of 200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already
had an advanced high-tech communications network 100 years earlier than
the New Yorkers.”One week later, The Star Ledger, a local newspaper in Newark,
New Jersey, reported the following:“After digging as deep as 30 feet in his back yard, Vinnie ‘The Salami’
Manziano, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely
nothing. Vinnie has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, New Jersey had already gone wireless.”Just makes me proud to be from NJ.

Israel to continue fighting ‘terror in Gaza’ despite Hamas ceasefire plea
Israel has decided to continue to “work against terrorism in Gaza,” despite Hamas’ call for a ceasefire, Cabinet Secretary Zvi Hauser said on Sunday.
The political-security cabinet convened earlier in the day in order to discuss the current situation with Gaza. After being briefed on the latest developments, the cabinet decided to instruct the Israel Defense Forces and security officials to “continue to work against terrorism in Gaza in order to stop the firing on Israel and return quiet to southern Israel,” Hauser said.
During the meeting, the cabinet also approved a nation-wide home front defense drill called “Turning Point 5” which will take place in a few weeks.
Hey Hamas, want to stop Israel from killing your terrorist brethren? Stop firing rockets into Israel.

The National Security Counter-Terrorism Bureau on Sunday issued a travel warning to Israelis planning to go to countries in the Mediterranean and Far East.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s media adviser, in view of events in the Gaza Strip, “terrorist elements intend to perpetrate attacks against Israelis and Jews overseas ahead of – and during – the Passover holiday, in the Mediterranean Sea basin and in the Far East.”
The statement recommends that Israelis be “highly sensitive” and aware at tourist sites, that they alter their daily routines, and avoid unexpected invitations to meetings.

Ministers: Hamas ‘Barbarians,’ ‘Hunt Them Down’
Minister of Public Security Yitzchak Aharonovich and Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon joined Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Sunday in sounding an increasingly ominous tone toward the Hamas terror entity in Gaza.
Aharonovich called Hamas’s behavior “barbaric” and Ayalon said the terror group only understands force.
Aharonovich toured the Gaza Belt communities as terrorist missile attacks continued. He met with the head of the Sha’ar Hanegev local authority, Alon Shuster, and the head of Merhavim local authority Avner Mori, and offered them assistance in dealing with the security situation.
He also visited the spot where a Grad missile hit in the Negev town of Ofakim.
“There is no immunity for anyone in Gaza and they must know that we will hunt them down, one by one, until we find them. We will know how to reach their hiding places in the ground. The IDF has the means for that and we will use them,” Aharonovich declared.
The final stop on the minister’s tour was Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva, where he visited Daniel Viflic, who was critically wounded when terrorists fired a Kornet anti-tank missile at the school bus he was in.
“Hamas behavior is barbaric,” he said outside the hospital. “Everyone knows that a yellow bus is an international marking for a vehicle transporting children, and firing at it is a heinous crime and a crossing of a line.”
“Hamas has no compunctions but we will know how to react with the force that the IDF possesses. We will not the abandon residents of the South and we will hunt down Hamas and the terror groups wherever they may be.”
Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said Sunday that “terror will never defeat us. The nation of Israel will always know how to close ranks in the face of threats, and we are all with the residents of the South. Unfortunately Hamas only understands force, and Israel knows how to make Hamas understand that terror will have a steep price tag.”

It will be a landslide almost no matter who they run, unless they find sanity by January.
If they do the Summer Savior tactic (bring in a more or less unexpected Dark Horse and push as savior - like Bush in 2000), I’d expect to see one of two: Perry, or Petraeus. The former is no better than what’s there already but if he’s late enough he can still be the “sane alternative”. Petraeus, on the other hand…

Nuance = death in a primary. Those are the active party base voters. They don’t give a shit about nuance. They want red meat and partisan fealty.
Plus, as with Huntsman, he’s a Mormon. The evangelicals consider Mormons to be a half-step above Satanists. He’ll have a problem in the South even if he does manage a nuanced look at health care.

Perry has a lot to answer for here in Texas, namely having a deficit more than double what he predicted, and the severe cuts that are being made around here. Of course, he’d still win another term if he ran, since this is a blood red state and there are a lot of idiots who keep voting for this guy. =P

re: #15 Gus 802
The USS Liberty incident was an accident.
This topic can get real hot real fast, so this will be the only thing I post about it.
The Johnson administration did not publicly dispute Israel’s claim that the attack had been nothing more than a disastrous mistake. But internal White House documents obtained from the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library show that the Israelis’ explanation of how the mistake had occurred was not believed.
Except for McNamara, most senior administration officials from Secretary of State Dean Rusk on down privately agreed with Johnson’s intelligence adviser, Clark Clifford, who was quoted in minutes of a National Security Council staff meeting as saying it was “inconceivable” that the attack had been a case of mistaken identity.
The attack “couldn’t be anything else but deliberate,” the NSA’s director, Lt. Gen. Marshall Carter, later told Congress.
“I don’t think you’ll find many people at NSA who believe it was accidental,” Benson Buffham, a former deputy NSA director, said in an interview.
“I just always assumed that the Israeli pilots knew what they were doing,” said Harold Saunders, then a member of the National Security Council staff and later assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern and South Asian affairs.
“So for me, the question really is who issued the order to do that and why? That’s the really interesting thing.”
The NSA’s deputy director, Louis Tordella, speculated in a recently declassified memo that the attack “might have been ordered by some senior commander on the Sinai Peninsula who wrongly suspected that the LIBERTY was monitoring his activities.”
An awful lot of people in the NSA disagree with the “accident” meme. I do too. What I foid particularly despicable is the tendency for many people to scream “Jew hater!” at anybody (including surviving and sometimes still badly injured or PTSD suffering crew members) who suspects that Israel had a rational reason for attacking the Liberty.

2) Glenn Beck’s show was canceled. There remains plenty of angry extremism on the airwaves: Limbaugh, Levin, and so on. But the collapse in Beck’s ratings represents a heartening repudiation of John Birch society conspiracy-mongering by rank-and-file conservatives – despite the shameful attempt by Fox News to mainstream this junk.
3) Donald Trump shouldered aside Newt Gingrich in Republican primary preferences. This may not sound like good news but bear with me: It used to be that the person offering the Obama-is-African-not-American message to the Republican primary electorate was a former speaker of the House, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and a Fox News contributor: in other words, an eminent and respectable personage. Now Trump has stolen the Gingrich spotlight, knocked Gingrich out of the top 3. With the result that the bearer of the Obama-not-American message is a clownish TV personality in an absurd hairdo. That’s progress. Birtherism is being quarantined within the GOP. Better if it were repudiated and extinguished, but although this week was positive, it was not miraculous.
In other words…

I like Frum, but he’s delusional if he thinks the 2012 GOP is going to be anywhere close to balanced or sane. Trump is a reflection of the party base, not a repudiation of it. They love him, and think he might have solid evidence to bolster their side.

Judging from that guy’s rhetoric, there will be a lot more dead bodies before the Israeli government considers slowing down…”there is no immunity for anyone in Gaza”…Clearly he doesn’t see Palestinians as people. And the foreign minister’s “steep price tag” comment also indicates this is about payback, and not security. Not good signs.
Hopefully, this is just one guy flexing his testicles for the cameras and there are some calmer heads in the government.

David Frum is letting his partisanship cloud his judgment again.
The right wing base had NOTHING to do with Glenn Beck leaving Fox. He wasn’t repudiated — the most important factor in his show being canceled was the loss of tens of millions of dollars in advertising.
And Birtherism is not being “quarantined” in the GOP — it’s running rampant. That article is complete crapola.

Even if there was a seeekrit nirthtificate - and PAlin just admitted he was born in Hawaii - what could possibly be of interest to The Donald or Sister Sarah?.
All they would possibly find is “Fathers Religion” or some such, which they are all hoping says “Muslim”. Anyone still asking about the certificate - who admits he was born here - is just pandering to the anti-muslim crowd.
Did birth certificates list parents’ religions in the 1960s?
Also, we know Obama Sr. was from a Muslim family. He would have either listed ‘Muslim’ out of tradition, or ‘none’, out of conviction. I don’t know enough about the man to hazard a guess. Either way, nothing new is revealed.

I have a simple suggestion for this. Israel should declare a cease fire. No random targeted attacks anymore.
However, since the people of Gaza are presumably adults and by all accounts not rebelling against Hamas and since all firing points from Gaza can be accurately identified; Israel should say that on any given day one or all firing points will have a 500 lb bomb dropped on them (within 100 feet) 8 hours after the firing; regardless of location.
Plenty of time for people to leave the area and plenty of reason for them to discuss where the next firing points should be.
Needless to say, I leave ///’s

If anything, it’s becoming more virulent. Trump blew the whistle loud and clear, after months of other candidates just jingling it around and teasing the base with it. Now Palin’s started blowing her own and, given time, the others will to, if only to “take back the initiative.” Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re not already digging through all their family papers, trying to haul out their own “long forms.”

While I am not fan of Palin, and Trump is a buffoon (anyone with an MBA and some good, well-paid advisors could have amassed his wealth if they were left with the money he inherited from his father), I clearly heard Palin say that it was her belief that Obama was born in Hawaii.
What I got from the interview is that Palin was pointing out the fact that a private U.S. citizen could use his own resources to challenge the constitutional ability of the President to hold office (and on any nutty premise): the U.S. is probably one of the the only countries in the world where this could be done without that citizen being jailed, or worse (and the other nations are only around because they have been protected by the U.S. from one threat or another since WWII). Sometimes I think that the Palin Hatred Syndrome blinds Americans to the things that are great about their country, and make it unique in the world (as did Bush Derangement Syndrome) - I say this as a Canadian.

re: #422 Rightwingconspirator
Please check this out later…
Thanks for the response. I read it, and I don’t find it credible. It does not present any evidence at all to refute the fairly voluminous testimony by eyewitnesses in the Chicago Times story, including intel people who listed in on radio chatter from the Israeli jets in real time during the attack, and other, widely spread intel military personnel who read the teletypes in Da Nang and elsewhere the same day and who all corroborate the claim that Israeli pilots identified the US flag on the ship, repeatedly asked for verification that this was the ship they were supposed to hit and were told by controllers to attack.
The transcript published by the Jerusalem Post bore scant resemblance to the one that in 1967 rolled off the teletype machine behind the sealed vault door at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, where Steve Forslund worked as an intelligence analyst for the 544th Air Reconnaissance Technical Wing, then the highest-level strategic planning office in the Air Force.
“The ground control station stated that the target was American and for the aircraft to confirm it,” Forslund recalled. “The aircraft did confirm the identity of the target as American, by the American flag.
“The ground control station ordered the aircraft to attack and sink the target and ensure they left no survivors.”
Forslund said he clearly recalled “the obvious frustration of the controller over the inability of the pilots to sink the target quickly and completely.”
“He kept insisting the mission had to sink the target, and was frustrated with the pilots’ responses that it didn’t sink.”
Nor, Forslund said, was he the only member of his unit to have read the transcripts. “Everybody saw these,” said Forslund, now retired after 26 years in the military.
Forslund’s recollections are supported by those of two other Air Force intelligence specialists, working in widely separate locations, who say they also saw the transcripts of the attacking Israeli pilots’ communications.
One is James Gotcher, now an attorney in California, who was then serving with the Air Force Security Service’s 6924th Security Squadron, an adjunct of the NSA, at Son Tra, Vietnam.
“It was clear that the Israeli aircraft were being vectored directly at USS Liberty,” Gotcher recalled in an e-mail. “Later, around the time Liberty got off a distress call, the controllers seemed to panic and urged the aircraft to ‘complete the job’ and get out of there.”
Six thousand miles from Omaha, on the Mediterranean island of Crete, Air Force Capt. Richard Block was commanding an intelligence wing of more than 100 analysts and cryptologists monitoring Middle Eastern communications.
The transcripts Block remembered seeing “were teletypes, way beyond Top Secret. Some of the pilots did not want to attack,” Block said. “The pilots said, ‘This is an American ship. Do you still want us to attack?’
“And ground control came back and said, ‘Yes, follow orders.’”
Gotcher and Forslund agreed with Block that the Jerusalem Post transcript was not at all like what they remember reading.
Block, now a child protection caseworker in Florida, observed that “the fact that the Israeli pilots clearly identified the ship as American and asked for further instructions from ground control appears to be a missing part of that Jerusalem Post article.”
There is a lot more at the Chicago Times article. Take the thirty minutes or so read it.

The Republicans aren’t going to get onboard with an effort to amend the Constitution simply to put to rest the “question” of Obama’s citizenship status.
And even if we had President McCain right now, they wouldn’t get on board with the idea because having a foreign-born POTUS would fly in the face of all that Constitutional fetishizing that the far right does.

Birthers also claim that ‘natural born citizenship’ requires being born to parents who were both US citizens. Thus, Obama could never be natural born, even if he was born in Hawaii.

Amendments usually are brought up in Congress first. Unless 3/4 of states call for a convention, but that’s only happened once, for the 21st amendment I believe.

There is no reason to pass such an amendment.

Precisely, they want “Real Americans” at the helm, hence a lot of the reason why Birtherism has found fertile soil on the Right side of the aisle. If they don’t believe in the BS, they encourage it amongst the base because it helps with portraying Obama as an “outsider” who the voters simply can’t trust.

It has to pass by a supermajority in both houses of congress, then be ratified by 3/4 of the state legislatures.
(Mississippi finally, about 15 years ago, ratified the anti-slavery amendment. 9 states still haven’t.)

I am not sure why “believe” is code for some other meaning: she also said that she had examined the evidence of his birth herself and was convinced he was born in Hawaii.
To be honest, I am not sure why it matters if the President is a native-born or naturalized citizen: this whole thing could be resolved very easily if the Constitution were amended retroactively (if that is possible) to remove the clause in question: both Democrats and Republicans would surely agree with this amendment, not as an admittance of Obama being foreign born, but simply so that resources could be spent on relevant and important issues.
The constitution can be amended to eliminate this provision, but it is a very difficult process. It has been done only 17 times. (The first ten amendments, the Bill of Rights were adopted almost contemporaneously with the rest of the document.) In this case, the process would probably be opposed by whichever party seemed less likely to have an immigrant candidate. The most recent amendment, limiting the power of Congress to raise its own salaries, was first proposed as the twelfth article of the Bill of Rights but was not ratified until 1992.

You’re also assuming that people can leave the area at will.
ANd getting Israel to drop a 500 pounder in the heart of Gaza City on schedule would be Hamas’ greatest PR coup EVAH.

Charles:
1. Palin is talking out of both sides of her mouth. This whole thing is bullshit. She KNOWS that Obama was born in Hawaii. She also knows that people who don’t believe that are vulnerable to her patter.
2. There are plenty of countries where you are allowed to make a fool of yourself wandering around trying to prove that elected officials are secretly from Kenya. If the United States has been able to contribute to this by policing the world, I consider this our little donation to freedom, however kooky.
3. Trust me. Not liking Sarah Palin is not blinding anyone to what is great about America. We don’t like Sarah because she is the antithesis of what is great about America.

re: #523 Obdicut
All I am saying is that this entire issue, whether the President is a native-born or naturalized citizen, is a waste of time - why does it matter?
In fact, couldn’t the argument be made that a foreign-born citizen is more loyal to the U.S. (apparently the original reason not to allow naturalized citizens to hold the office was that they could still be loyal to their birth nation) because he/she came as a choice, and may have even put their lives at risk to do so?
And to all of you who are pointing out Canadian contributions (good and bad) to the U.S.:

It is in the constitution that the President must be a natural born citizen of the United States.
There’s a matter of interpretation and original intent. A strictly literal reading of “natural born” could easily mean my daughters could never be President, as they had Cesarian deliveries. I think it’s clear the intent was that a candidate must have been a US citizen from day one of his (or her) life, however that may be defined or qualified subsequently.

Really? for me, the top 3 links are the same. It’s a google proxy. If the problem is malware, the malware won’t know to redirect the scroogle links.
Here are the top 3 links on both search engines:
1. Civilian Conservation Corps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2. CCC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
3. Chaos Computer Club - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

re: #587 unwashed masses
I get a whole lot of hits. The right one leads back to wikipedia however, and that redirects to what looks like a rotating Chinese (I won’t say Chink) spam link.

It’s likely to be a problem on your side otherwise others will see it happen too.
Check your windows host file

More spyware scanners. Each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

re: #593 unwashed masses
Thank you very much. I will try after dinner, but I have to say this is an odd one. I know that spammers rotate their domains and it is not hard to imagine that they can target certain ISPs or domains to keep a lower profile. I’ve run scans and find nothing, nor do I have any other oddities.
We will see and I will advise. Thanks.

Yeah, it sounds like a hijacker virus. Try malwarebytes, also see this article:

Update. I ran a McAfee scan, adware and windows defender. The first found a few Bamital.dll virus entries and some malware. (I haven’t used this PC for some time).
Then I tried the wiki search again and now it worked.
However I still find this an odd way for a virus to operate since I noticed no other issues. Surely this thing could not have been waiting for me to make just that search.
