11 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jun 20, 2011 3:08:34pm

I decided today to remove the “Related Pages” fold-down menus — after watching the usage for a couple of weeks it was clear that not many people used those “spinoff links” menus at all, except a few LGF users keeping the feature alive by posting stuff to them. Everyone’s using the LGF Pages indexes or the Featured/Recent Pages listings in the sidebar, and I’d like to encourage that to be the default, in fact.

It cleans up the look a bit, and also lets me get rid of a lot of now-superfluous Javascript code. Any time you can load less code for a web page is a good time.

I must protest, that Lady GaGa, all the other stuff aside, is substantially more talented than most of the Spearsesque Idoru ‘talents’. She can actually sing without Protools, and can also actually write (which is how she got her start, actually).

She just likes to be a freak and media spectacle, which gives people the wrong idea.

Agreed…I watched her Monster’s Ball on HBO recently…(it was on so many times I finally decided to catch a few minutes)…she doesn’t lip synch, and she’s actually got some decent songs (though most is a bit too pop for me)…and apparently she isn’t too shy to say she likes to fuck.

She kinda pissed me off with her treatment of Weird Al.

She insisted upon hearing the entire finished song of his parody - and after he spent the money to record it, she said no to his releasing it.

She does love her control, though. Anyone who takes her picture in concert has to sign the rights to the photos over to her. That’s a little extreme, IMO.

And over at CNN, we have commentator Fareed Zakaria musing about revising the US Constitution. you’d expect an article like that to generate a lot of comments, and you’d be right. The comment thread has over 1000 comments. They range from ones rebutting Zakaria’s suggestions about changing the Senate and Electoral College like this:

Rick House

While the electoral college suggestions are not without merit, your suggestion about the Senate shows your total lack of understanding of how (and why) the Senate exists. Please do some research before you display your ignorance.
The House of Representatives is the portion of Congress which represents (to a degree) the “one-man-one-vote” idea. The number of Representatives are based on population numbers. A small state, like Rhode Island, doesn’t have as much representation (and thus, as much power) as a more populous state. There is no way a smaller state could block any legislation of larger states. The Senate is designed specifically to prevent such “mob rule”. Each state, no matter the size, must come to accords on equal footing. Therefore, a minority of populous states cannot push legislation which is detrimental to smaller states. So you need to do some more research. I (personally) think you should retract your comments and publish your new understanding of the Constitution.

People’s own proposals such as:

Oldmanriver

I think Zakaria was just asking us to think about it rather than as a serious proposal. What if we would re write our constitution how would it be different from the one we have. think about this

1 Keep the bill of rights and/or change them so that everyone has equal protection under the law
2 Get rid of representitive government altogether
3 Using current technology every voter would be given the chance to vote on new laws.
4 Laws and ammendments could be recommended but in order to et them to a vote there would have to be some sort of process which a certain percentage of voters would have to agree that its good enough to vote on. The supreme court or some other body would have to review the law in question before it came to a vote. The bill would have to be in language that everyone could understand, not lawyereze. Have experts come in to answer questions about how proposed bill would expect to change things. Then let the public decide.
5. This would reduce corruption because there would be so many people voting you couldnt bribe all of them. It would eliminate earmarks and pet projects because the bill would have to stand up to national oversite. You would have fewer tax breaks and special concerns for select buisnesses as well. There would be less horse trading to get bills signed into law.
6. You could keep the executive branches and judicial branches the same to keep the checks and balances.

Problems with this:
Would enough people vote to make it worthwhile?
Would enough people be willing to educate themselves on a subject before voting?
How would you make it so that it does not just become a tyranny of the majority?
What would rules for advertising for or against a bill be set up?
Can you set up a voting system secure enough that a smart hacker could not change the number of yes or no votes?

This is just an idea…I think Mr Zakaria was wanting our opinion on how we would change things if we could.

Over the past couple of years I’ve been of the growing opinion that we ought to get rid of the Senate. It is an outdated institution. Rather, replace them with a Board of Governors (made up literally of all the governors of the States) whose function would be to sit only for the really big stuff: constitutional amendments, impeachments, confirming USSC candidates, etc.

Then, increase the House to 535 members to allow for the growth in population, give voting rights to the the Reps from DC and any other territory, in order to be truly a representative form of government.

We can keep the electoral college, but now it would be 535+50 and the increased size would probably keep things on the even keel.

re: #204 Dark_Falcon

I’m not so sure about revising the constitution, but I would certainly like to see the number of representatives raised, preferably by a factor of ten or so. The US federal governments is currently one of the least representative in the world (numerically at least, I think it reflects the sentiments of the American people considerably better than countries such as China or Russia). Right now there is roughly one congressional representative per 650,000 people (roughly, there is a disparity of more than 400,000 between the largest and smallest district). This makes it hard for the representatives to actually get a feeling for what their constituents want.

There is obviously an opening right now for a GOP presidential candidate to articulate a strong, coherent foreign policy vision consistent with basic conservative priorities. Republicans have not nominated a genuine isolationist for president since 1936. They will not nominate one in 2012. In the end, the winning GOP foreign policy stance will be a muscular, unapologetic one of American leadership and peace through strength. Bet on it.

And the cite Charles left after it started going loony has now progressed to full-fledged conspiracism. Pajamas Media ran an article by Bob Owens accusing Obama of orchestrating Operation: Fast and Furious as a deliberate failure to advance the cause of gun control. No link to PJM, of course and Google has not yet cached it, but here are some choice excerpts (or should that be ex-DERPS):

The most damning revelations coming out of the hearings on Operation Fast and Furious held by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform are the unmistakable indications that the program was never designed to succeed as a law enforcement operation at all.

A quartet of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agents and supervisors turned into whistleblowers to bring the operation down, but only after U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was gunned down in the Arizona desert. Two of the weapons recovered at the scene of Terry’s murder were traced to the operation.

SNIP

And Obama himself has offered the solutions we would expect from a gun prohibitionist:

Faced with a Congress hostile to even slight restrictions of Second Amendment rights, the Obama administration is exploring potential changes to gun laws that can be secured strictly through executive action, administration officials say.

The Department of Justice held the first in what is expected to be a series of meetings on Tuesday afternoon with a group of stakeholders in the ongoing gun-policy debates. Before the meeting, officials said part of the discussion was expected to center around the White House’s options for shaping policy on its own or through its adjoining agencies and departments — on issues ranging from beefing up background checks to encouraging better data-sharing.

Administration officials said talk of executive orders or agency action are among a host of options that President Barack Obama and his advisers are considering.

As there is a pattern of behavior to suggest that Gunwalker was not a botched law enforcement operation, but was instead an effort by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department to carry out a subversive anti-gun policy of the Obama administration, it is pertinent to examine Obama’s past associations with anti-gun groups.

From 1994-2002, Obama was a director of the Joyce Foundation. Joyce is a progressive organization dedicated to “social justice,” and one of their primary areas of advocacy has always been the funding of gun control organizations. Joyce has long attempted to erode Second Amendment rights, and during Obama’s tenure as a director went so far as to try to subvert Second Amendment scholarship. Joyce gave millions to effectively buy law reviews with grants, and then used those reviews to publish only papers that attacked the individual rights interpretation. The goal was to so pervert legal scholarship that the scholarship would affect Supreme Court decisions.

Joyce director Obama, and those surrounding him, internalized fellow Chicagoan Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. While the Joyce plot narrowly failed, it affirmed Alinsky’s strategy of agitating, fanning hostility, and disorganizing the public in order to force radical change.

Note how Owens works the tired Alinsky cliche in there. It’s lame, I know, but I felt it should be shared with the Lizards. Some people just can’t see a governmental FUBAR as a FUBAR, it always has to be a conspiracy.

Speaking of dumbshit GOP senators from weak states who say dumb shit because they’re dumb, here’s Tom “I tied my own shoes today” Coburn!

[Link: news.discovery.com…]

note the difference between the GOP senator, who probably can’t wipe his own ass without assistance, and the Berkeley researcher who is probably twice this fool’s IQ:

Berkeley computer science professor Pieter Abbeel, one of the researchers behind the project, told me that the towel folding experiment was just a small part of a much broader effort aimed at creating robots that can handle the complexities of real environments. Here’s what he wrote in a rebuttal:

“[I]n order to expand the use of robots beyond manufacturing the machines must be far more sophisticated in terms of their ability to deal with complexity. That’s what our work is all about. Towel folding is just a first, small step towards a new generation of robotic devices that could, for example, significantly increase the independence of elderly and sick people, protect our soldiers during combat, and a host of other applications that would revolutionize our day-to-day lives.”

If this country continues to elect people like Tom Coburn, this country deserves to fail as a country. We elect these fools, and then we wonder why we fall behind in the sciences. Because look! We elected men who are dogshit in human form! What were we expecting?

I realize that he isn’t a favorite to many folks here, but I think this deserves mention:

Olbermann’s ‘Countdown’ returns on Current TV

(CNN) — Nearly five months after signing off from MSNBC, left-wing news personality Keith Olbermann returned to the airwaves Monday with the relaunch of his signature “Countdown” show on Current TV.

While known for generally opposing Republicans and supporting Democrats, Olbermann signaled that both parties would be targets in his “Special Comment,” a segment that was also part of his previous show.

“The nation is losing its independence through the malfeasance of one party and the timidity of the other,” he said, according to the show’s blog.

Still, the early take from the inaugural show suggested it would lean left, as evidenced by one segment labeled “Inside the Republican Cult.”

Guests included liberal documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, Daily Kos blogger Markos Moulitsas and John Dean, a former White House counsel to President Richard Nixon and now a conservative critic. Olbermann said he will be a frequent contributor to the show.

Olbermann abruptly left MSNBC in late January after eight years at the news network. In his time there, the former sports news anchor became a favorite of progressives for challenging rivals at Fox News and elsewhere, though he also faced criticism and publicly aired his frustrations with NBC’s management.

When I went to jail a couple months ago, I was put in medical. They let me out of medical and put me in population and all was fine. Not. I ended up thinking I was in San Diego, NYC and thought I was kidnapped, not to mention the 10 people I thought I killed. I just want to make sure you don’t go cold turkey. Most think it is a good thing and it isn’t. And FWIW, for the 2 weeks before going to jail I did nothing but drink. No food, no water. If it didn’t have CC in it, I didn’t want it. It was my personal bender to end all benders.

What the heck did you do to get in trouble?

here’s a project that should be funded…get a comprehensive energy bill passed…and another, get comprehensive immigration reform passed…the feds have more important things to worry about than funding robotics…it’s just a dime holding up a dollar…it’s a legit beef but pretty minor considering the dismal shape the country is in

comprehensive energy bill will never happen as long as farm states have outsized influence in congress

immigration reform will only happen if it allows a path for agriculture, and the GOP needs to disappear for that to happen

No, he may honestly feel the federal government shouldn’t be funding the project. That’s a legitimate position to take. It may be wrong, buts not indecent in any way.

That depends on whether he can or cannot see the applications to be derived from the research.

If he simply cannot see the value of the research beyond that published, even after being told what they are, then he is being purposefully ignorant. Many of us call that gross stupidity.

The real test will be when the recalls happen and we very possibly end up with 6 new Democrats in office as the polls seem to suggest is likely. This is why the RPW had to run fake Democrats in all 6 campaigns to force primary elections. They knew if they went straight to the voters they’d fail - now they get an extra month of Citizen’s United funded lies campaign advertisements to try & get the voters scared and back in line. Once we have Scooter stymied we can begin working on ways to limit the damage done by the budget they passed the other day.

Rick Perry’s Texas Law Adventures, contd.

New Law To Allow Licensed Gun Owners Keep Guns In Cars At Work
Governor Rick Perry has been busy signing and vetoing various bills to come out of this legislative session. One bill he vetoed would have banned texting while driving. The governor said the measure amounted to ‘micromanaging’ the behavior of adult drivers. But one bill he signed will allow licensed concealed handgun owners to keep guns in their cars while they are at work.

The gun bill is a good thing, IMO. It lets people who wish to carry concealed have their weapon where they can get it after work, rather than have to go home to get it. Nothing unreasonable there. Perry should have signed the texting while driving bill, though.

re: #361 Dark_Falcon

I see here that it fixed some problems with a previous law, which is good:

Replacement for the “Traveling” Law Passed in 2005~HB 1815 by Rep. Carl Isett (R-Lubbock)/Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D-McAllen)
Currently referred to as the “Motorists Protection Act”
In 2005, the Texas Legislature passed a bill establishing that a person is presumed to be traveling if he or she is in a private motor vehicle, is not engaged in criminal activity, is not prohibited by law from possessing a firearm, and is not a member of a criminal street gang. The clear intent was to protect law-abiding citizens’ right to carry a handgun concealed for personal protection in their cars or trucks without needing a Concealed Handgun License (CHL).

Agree with you on the texting law, that seems like a risky distraction with no benefits that outweigh the risks.

Oh, forgot the next paragraph:

However, some District Attorneys in Texas have thumbed their noses at the intent of the law and have gone so far as to issue public statements that they will arrest anyone found within their jurisdictions to be carrying a handgun in his or her vehicle without a CHL. HB 1815 fixes that problem once and for all.[Link: www.thehighroad.org…]

Never can tell when you might need that gun while driving. There must be a one in several hundred million chance of being car-jacked on any given trip, and if you don’t have the gun in hand at the time, the car-jacker will undoubtedly let you pull it from the glove compartment if you ask nicely.

Most people give up playing cowboys and other cowboys while still kids. Not in Texas apparently.

People do get car-jacked and not all trips are equal. Some people may need to drive through bad places and want a gun available for protection. The gave them that right but it had some problems that were corrected. It’s a good law, sharp. It’s a threat to no one save criminals.

Gun owners tend to vote Republican while college kids tend to vote Democrat and even worse might have permanent sun tans. Yes that’s bad logic, see my own voting record and my small selection of fine weaponry for one example, however i’d bet that’s more likely how the author of this legislation thought than what you suggest, DF.
