Romney Campaign Desperately Circulating Talking Points

Stepped in it big time
Politics • Views: 29,511

Mitt Romney really stepped in it this time. Using the violent deaths of Americans overseas to attack President Obama, on the anniversary of 9/11 to boot, is even drawing criticism from many Republicans.

And now his campaign is desperately circulating talking points to supporters, to try to deal with the consequences of his crass statements. Expect all of these to immediately start spouting from the right wing media and blogs: Romney Camp Tries to Manage Fallout From Libya Response.

From the “Questions and Answers” section:

Questions & Answers:

Don’t you think it was appropriate for the embassy to condemn the controversial movie in question? Are you standing up for movies like this?

Governor Romney rejects the reported message of the movie. There is no room for religious hatred or intolerance.

— But we will not apologize for our constitutional right to freedom of speech.

— Storming U.S. missions and committing acts of violence is never acceptable, no matter the reason. Any response that does not immediately and decisively make that clear conveys weakness.

— If pressed: Governor Romney repudiated this individual in 2010 when he attempted to mobilize a Quran-burning movement. He is firmly against any expression of religious hatred or intolerance.

Reports indicate the embassy in Cairo released its initial statement before the invasion of the embassy commenced. Doesn’t this show they were trying to tamp down the protest and prevent what ultimately happened, not sympathize with the protesters?

— The Administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt instead of condemning their actions.

The part in bold above is essentially identical to the statement from the US embassy in Cairo that Romney infamously criticized.

So basically Romney was just criticize Obama just to criticize Obama. Typical Mitt. He has no real substance of his own so he has to resort to this. I hope his asshole behavior finally catches up with him this time.

Actually

There is no room for religious hatred or intolerance.

That's arguably a stronger statement than the embassy made. The embassy condemned the use of free speech to do this. This says there isn't any room, which is pretty demonstrably untrue: there's room for tons of religious bigotry in the US, including people like King, who Romney himself supports.

Compare and contrast:

US Embassy in Cairo:

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum (R) backed Mitt Romney’s claims that President Obama’s policies are responsible for the killing of four Americans in Libya. During an interview Wednesday afternoon on the Scott Hennen Show, Santorum charged that Obama has “showed that we’re going to cower to radical Islamists.” “If you’re a thug, you need to just wrap yourself in victimhood and call the United States an oppressor and this president will sympathize with you,” he exclaimed. Huntsman salutes ambassador killed in Libya

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who has twice served as a U.S. ambassador, expressed condolences on the killing of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens. Huntsman, who did not know Stevens personally, issued a statement lauding Stevens for "representing the highest ideals of American diplomacy.

"This is a time when we all should reflect on those who continue to give, even the last measure, of service and sacrifice, to promoting and defending America's interests abroad," Huntsman added. "This is above all a reminder that politics should end at the waters edge."

Huntsman's last sentence appears to be directed at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the only top Republican who has condemned President Barack Obama's administration for what Romney said was apologizing for America in the government's initial response.

People will continue to be able to produce movies such as this and I would agree that their freedom should not be hampered. That's why it's important to speak out about these hate groups and make the public aware of such organization like SIOA and individual like Robert Spencer. All we can do is damage control after incidents like these take place. In many ways it reminds me of the 2nd Amendment after mass shootings.

This isn't a clear cut case of free speech either since it seems to be tied in with an obvious campaign to stir up a religious war. It's not ordinary blasphemy. This is a movie backed with a loathsome cause. It's not like "The Satanic Verses" or the Dutch cartoonist but instead part of a movement.

Some 50 U.S. Marines headed to Libya on Wednesday to reinforce security at U.S. diplomatic facilities in the aftermath of an attack in the eastern city of Benghazi that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, officials said.

The Marines are members of an elite group known as a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, or FAST, whose role is to respond on short notice to terrorism threats and to reinforce security at U.S. embassies. They operate worldwide. The contingent that was dispatched to Libya was based in Spain.

ECONOMIC ISSUES
State spending increased at well over rate of inflation under Romney’s watch, estimated at 24% - more than$5 billion – over Romney’s final three years.

Under Romney, Massachusetts dramatically underperformed the rest of the nation in terms of job growth.

Romney has been criticized by experts for failing to deliver on issues of business development and economic growth after selling himself as the “CEO governor.”

Romney left his successor to fill a budget deficit exceeding $1 billion.

Romney raised state fees and taxes more than $700 million per year, according to independent experts.

Romney raised fees by roughly $500 million in his first year alone, a figure that was highest in the nation.

Massachusetts’ state and local tax burden rose more than 7% during Romney’s administration.

Emphasis mine. Can he shrink US taxes and the deficit? I doubt it.

Romney lies so easily because he thinks he is just that superior to you. You are not a person to him.

Romney has never been able to see other people as people. He can't relate to them because he only has ever seen them as tools to be used and disposed of.

That is how he made millions outsourcing American jobs and enjoys firing people. That is why he brags about his dancing horse or when stretching to relate can only manage "my wife owns a couple of Cadillacs." That is how he lies so easily and often. That is why likes that story he tells about bankrupting political opponents.

That is why he can imagine that all the advantages, connections and money given to him through inheritance were somehow something he did himself, and worse that others less fortunate are somehow lesser.

Other people are marks and he despises them with the smug superiority of a consummate con-man.

He lies so easily because he thinks he is just that superior to you.

The proposal for use of drones is expected to be approved shortly by the Pentagon and the White House, CNN's Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr reported. Man, the wingnuts have been making it sound like the Ambassador died in a specifically targeted attack.

CNN: Ambassador Stevens, Others Died Of Smoke Inhalation

A grenade attack created a fire in the U.S. consulate building in Benghazi, which created a very complicated and complex situation for those inside, according to a senior U.S. official familiar with the details of what happened.

"Folks inside were fighting the fire inside and the attackers outside. It was a cascading casualty, and Amb. Chris Stevens and the others got separated trying to escape to the roof of the building, ultimately succumbing to smoke inhalation," the U.S. official told CNN's Jill Dougherty. "There will be more details as we go forward, but there were several valiant attempts to re-enter the burning building to find and save the ones we lost. Valiant but unsuccessful."

Looks like all the dealings happened after Mitt left (actually left, not just "left" for the Olympics), but it is pretty telling when Mitt still says Bain is a "good company."

From Page 9 of the book:

After calling for economic divestment from Iran, Romney was embarrassed by revelation that the Italian branch of Bain & Company – firm where Romney started as young consultant and served as CEO in early‘90s – received $2.3 million contract from National Iranian Oil Company in 2004.

Bain Capital, the private equity firm that made Romney his fortune, currently owns a chemicals and paint company called SigmaKalon that operates an office in Tehran.

The only thing that will get attention is if you say something stupid, which is what they've managed to do."

"The only way to get attention is to say something a little outrageous," MSNBC host Chuck Todd agreed. "And I have to say, I am stunned they put out this release when they did, before we knew all the facts, before daybreak, before we know for sure whether there are going to be protests that spread around the world."

If rumsfeldsoffice doesn't know about asymmetric warfare by now, it hasn't learned a thing.

Rumsfeld was a senile tyrant as SecDef. He enthusiastically sent US troops into Iraq then denied them the MRAP vehicles they needed to survive IED attacks. We had an MRAP while I was in Iraq in 2006, imported from South Africa (where they have been made since the 70s). It was paid for by my employers and it was private property. US troops were just starting to get the American versions by then, but 3 or 4 soldiers were being killed every day when IEDs blew up their eggshell Humvees.

Religious references in the infamous "film" appear to have been overdubbed - and it's entirely possible that those "acting" in the film had no idea what the purpose of the film was/or that it was expropriated for propaganda purposes.

If you watch closely, you can see that when the actors are reading parts of the script that do not contain Islam-specific language, the audio from the sound stage is used (the audio that was recorded as the actors were simultaneously being filmed). But anytime the actors are referring to something specific to the religion (the Prophet Muhammed, the Quran, etc.) the audio recorded during filming is replaced with a poorly executed post-production dub. And if you look EVEN closer, you can see that the actors’ mouths are saying something other than what the dub is saying.

For example, at 2:53, the voiceover says “His name is Muhammed. And we can call him The Father Unknown.” In this case, the whole line is dubbed, and it appears the actor is actually saying, “His name is George (?). And we can call him The Father Unknown.” I assume the filmmakers thought they were being slick, thinking that dubbing the whole line instead of just the name would make it more seamless and less noticeable to the viewer. But once you start to look for these dubs, it’s hard to see anything else.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Key paragraph:

All of which raises the question: What was Team Romney thinking? I’m not really sure, but I happened to speak this morning to a senior Romney adviser from a previous campaign who offered his own theory. According to this person, Romney may have been feeling defensive over the hazing he took in Charlotte last week--“my opponent and his running mate are new to foreign policy,” the president tweaked him—and was primed to hit back. “They set him up Thursday night at the convention with the smack down on foreign policy,” says the former adviser. “They called him naïve, Palin-esque. Then he got his back up about it and was waiting for opportunity to show, ‘I’m strong, too.’”

If the Libyan embassy attack was indeed a preplanned terrorist operation, taking advantage of protests of this crazy film (whether or not the film protests were co-engineered), then pause for one moment and think about how things have changed in 11 years.

11 years ago, a global operation had the resources and position to mount an attack that wounded the US on its own soil, caused thousands of deaths, and literally changed global security and politics to this very day.

Today, those holding that same ideology attacked an embassy in a chaotic territory, a country in turmoil just beginning to rebuild itself. They killed 4 US citizens and, reportedly, a number of their own countrymen defending those citizens.

I mourn all of them, and those that sponsor and prosecute this kind of violence are not gone. But their teeth are not so sharp, now.

Makes sense to me...Romney's as insecure as they come.

Libya's new government is actually friendly towards the US, and Libyans know that the US supported Khadafi's ouster - as compared to Iran in 1977-1981, where the US supported the Shah and was seen as the bad guy by the revolutionaries because of the Shah's vicious security apparatus.

Would be a bloodletting that makes the savaging the British press gave Romney during his gaffe-fest there trivial in comparison.

No need for separate "fact checkers". Verify pundit statements and then report. Call out the crap data, misleading statements, and tap-dancing with a large enough spotlight that the politicians and pundits possibly show some embarrassment at being uninformed, pig-headed, and irrational.

The embassy actually apologized to the violent mob attacking us, and it even went so far as to chastise those who use free speech to “hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” (Funny, the current administration has no problem hurting the “religious feelings” of Catholics.)

But where is the president’s statement about this?

...

It’s about time our president stood up for America and condemned these Islamic extremists.

...

America can’t afford any more “leading from behind” in such a dangerous world. We already know that President Obama likes to “speak softly” to our enemies. If he doesn’t have a “big stick” to carry, maybe it’s time for him to grow one.

And I am tired of the assumption that "firmly rejecting" what someone communicates when they use their free speech constitutes some kind of infringement of that speech.

Then why call it "abuse of free speech?" Simply say you reject it.

LOL! And "Bible Spice". Good ones.

Seriously, I wonder if John McCain sometimes thinks to himself, "God, why did I unleash this woman on the American public; please forgive me."

Thats a bit different than an international incident where peoples lives are at stake, I'm sure you would agree.

I don't know why you're focusing on this, of all things, when the president already repudiated it.

Mr. Fischer, when Jesus said "turn the other cheek," he didn't mean "show everybody your ass."

And that's very true; Biblical Jesus didn't say that.

Republican Jesus, the one that Mr. Fischer believes in, apparently did.

Republican Jesus is Biblical Jesus' evil twin.

yes I do agree regarding the incident but the underlying statement of Presidents need to be cautious is something they all learn in office, as would candidate Romney were he to be elected.

From AOL:

Congressman blames Obama for attack

Even before I clicked the link, I thought to myself: "Allen West."

And just like fucking clockwork...

Caribou Barbie is my favorite, but Charlie Pierce over at Esquire is hilarious and he calls her Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods.

Rather a different level of scale, don't you think, compared to the current incident?

We dont know that. Maybe he feels like he feels and means what he said.
Then again he could be pandering. With Romney you never know.

Fischer Demands Mass Public Executions in Response to Libya Attack

Hey, I think the Romney campaign stepped in it too, but executing his advisers is going too far. For a first offense, anyway.
