This never felt like a sure thing to me - in fact, I was seriously worried that America would swing back to the right.
It makes the victory that much sweeter because it was in doubt.
The lying, reactionary right is on the run tonight.
Rove/Koch/Adelson spent what, $500+ million in dark money to achieve just that, and lost!
Now if we can just get a couple of new SC justices to revisit Citizens United, maybe we'll have a chance of purging these assholes out of the system once and for all.

Skew this pole, mothefuckers.
Aw gee. I've been predicting the same as Nate Silver all along. (Not that I'm smarter or better informed. I just figure he's smarter or better informed, so I'll go with his predictions and those of the election betting markets.)
Now, we get to see whether this next four years will be any improvement on the last four. My predictions:
(1) Economically, yes. The economy has some native resilience and that will make itself felt. Fracked natural gas may not be good for the environment, (it's less bad than coal, anyhow) but it won't be banned and cheap fuel won't hurt the year-by-year economic stats. The de-facto ban on coal will be moot. With any luck, by the time the gas runs low, we can have a lot of wind and solar up and running. But that's all for later, decades later probably.
(2) Socioeconomically, no. The hollowing out of the economy will continue. The top 20% will gather up most of what economic gains there are. The working poor will find full time jobs much harder to get, courtesy of the insurance mandates of Obamacare. If an employee is just part-time, the company doesn't have to offer health coverage. The coverage mandated is hugely expensive relative to entry-level middle class jobs, which makes it hugely more expensive to hire moderate-wage workers to full time positions. But that's not the only reason. Educationally, the nation is also hollowing out. We have good universities, some good private and charter schools, a few good public school systems, and an enormous mass of dysfunctional public school systems. Any chance of reforming the latter went out the window.
(3) Militarily, yes. The war in Iraq is over. The war in Afghanistan will wind down, the Taliban will take it back, and we will shrug. It'll be over. Our technology will improve, our soldiers will get a break from long tours of duty, and the money now going to operations can go to readiness and innovation.
(4) Fiscally, no. The new taxes Obama will get, and he can get them just by driving us over the fiscal cliff if the Republicans don't blink, will not begin to cover the spending rate he's already put in place. There will be inflation, our bonds will be downgraded, and the interest rate the nation must pay will rise.
It's hard to be insouciant about this scorecard. Item (2) is a downer. Item (4) was looking to materialize in some form whoever won. But opinions can differ over whether all this will come to pass. We shall see.

re: #267 lostlakehiker
It must really suck to be so pessimistic.

5) If you are a doctor begin limiting your patients or only take cash payments.
6) If you produce food (farmers) consider reducing your output to drive up prices and help Michelle O. with her fight on fat.

bitter freepers counsel revenge:
It’s time for the people who make this country work to put up or shut up. It’s time to make the deadbeats feel some pain IMHO.
1) Minimize your spending. Take your savings out of the economy and hide it as best as you can.
2) In the same vein, take as much of your economic activity to the black market / cash only market as you can.
3) If you are thinking about closing your business down, go ahead
4) If you are keeping your business running, take a strong look at who you are hiring and firing (ie consider firing minorities and single women)
5) If you are a doctor begin limiting your patients or only take cash payments.
6) If you produce food (farmers) consider reducing your output to drive up prices and help Michelle O. with her fight on fat.
7)Do not associate, coach, elevate, or help in any way those who trend Democrat. This includes charities.
8)If you are working hard to try and get ahead. Stop - enjoy your life and family while you still can.
9) Do not associate with liberal bastions such as schools, colleges, and the entertainment industry. Consider homeschooling your kids.
10) Move to a red state and start pushing for secession.
Yes. Trash your life and become a bitter reclusive lunatic because a guy you don't like won the presidency for four years. Destroy the career you put your life into. Reduce your income. Lash out at your neighbors. Deprive yourself and your children of education. Attempt to destroy the Union.

re: #277 engineer cat
if the difference in the stock market and monthly employment numbers are as much better four years from now as they are now from four years ago, we will be in the biggest economic boom you ever saw
There isn't going to be any big stock market boom. Price-earnings ratios are in line with historical norms now. Earnings aren't going to double, especially not after-tax earnings. Dividend and capital gains returns from stocks will become less attractive as the tax laws change. All this means that the market will have a headwind.
Look for fewer full time employees in four years than we have now, and fewer people participating in the labor market. Whether you call it unemployment, or whether those not working end up classified as disabled, discouraged, retired early, or what have you, the real unemployment rate is in a secular rise. The modest recovery we will probably see will not much offset that trend.

There is one tiny grain of truth: at some point the economy is going to collapse. That has nothing to do with our choice of party, it is simply the collapse that we managed to stave off in 2008/9 catching up with us.
Romney's policies might have staved it off a bit longer, but the results would have been that much more diastrous for more of us when it did hit. Under Obama, it will likely be broader but not as deep.

That's literally a two-dimensional view of the situation. A more honest map would be 3D, with counties given a column whose elevation was the population per square mile.
Everybody could think of it as if each column were a funny shaped glass of water, and the total amount of blue water would be visibly comparable to the total amount of red water. It'd take a fine eye to discern which combination of "glasses" held more water.

Eeyore haz a sad.
Eeyore has a bad case of realism. You don't actually think the markets are going to double, do you? And what makes me exceptional in thinking it won't? If the consensus was that it would, the market would already have hopped to nearly that doubling you say you expect. Markets are like that.
As to employment, we've seen the real rate of unemployment go sideways or up for quite a while now. Labor force participation is down. Disability rates are up, even though the incidence of disabling injuries is down. (There, a spot of good news.) Unemployment is tending to last longer. The next generation is not getting the education it needs to step into high skill work.
These are reasons not to expect any but the most modest amelioration of the difficulty the second and third quintile of the population, economy-wise, are mired in. The bottom quintile will get more help from the government. The top quintile will gain a little pre-tax income, and more or less break even after taxes are factored in. And if it doesn't break even, that doesn't spell ruin. It just spells cutbacks. The middle is in for a rough ride.
