What is the hook for, weights?

2 makeitstop  Thu, Dec 13, 2012 9:07:53am

If I didn't already have a nice tripod, I'd so snap that up.

3 b_sharp  Thu, Dec 13, 2012 9:09:48am

I have a tripod but I don't use it much because it requires that I remove my pants, and in the winter that can be a small problem.

Yah, it tends to cramp up.

Wish I could. I need a new tripod for the 5x7 camera I should be getting soon. Oh, well the old steel beast will have to continue to do the trick.

Same deal here. I've got a nice Manfrotto tripod that is great for travel purposes - lightweight, and maxes out at 70 inches so I'm not bending over to compose all my shots. But if I didn't, then the 65 inch version is one to consider or this 68 inch version.

Yup. To increase stability, especially in windy conditions. Reduce vibrations that way.

re: #1 b_sharp

Yep. For stability in winds or when you're putting heavier gear up top.

Kind of ironic, actually. You buy a lightweight tripod to quit carrying around the heavier one, then have to bring something heavy to make up for the lack of weight in the tripod. (btw, depending on where the hook's set and a few other things you can use your camera bag for the weight.

15 lawhawk  Thu, Dec 13, 2012 9:27:51am

re: #11 kirkspencer

Yeah, it's the tradeoff that anyone who is doing nature/landscape photography has to figure out. Get better/sturdier equipment, but weighs more (and leads to leaving it behind when push comes to shove) or get lighter gear that is more prone to shakiness or more likely to get damaged over time.

Everyone has a different tolerance to lightweight gear, but tripods are someone you shouldn't really skimp on. Get someone that you're comfortable with (size does matter, especially if you're taller). You can get lighter gear with stability if you pay more.

And then, there's ease of use (quick connects, breaking down gear after use, etc.)

It's best to try 'em out in a store with a good selection before buying - to at least familiarize yourself with how they work and whether you'd be comfortable with use.

Some places will even let you rent gear.

In the NYC metro area, there are 3 places I'd recommend. Adorama and BH Photo in Manhattan, and Unique Photo in Fairfield, NJ. I've had good experiences buying gear from all 3.

nod.

One test I've seen when selecting lightweight tripods is to extend a leg, hook something that weighs 3-5 pounds on the end, grab the other end, and see how much it flexes when you wave it gently in the air. Ideally it doesn't.

Another option is to get a monopole that can double as a walking stick. Yes, it is harder to do landscapes or slow exposures. On the other hand it's useful instead of being a constant weight except in narrow circumstances - which tends to make it less frequently left behind.

re: #1 b_sharp

What is the hook for, weights?

The hook is for a sand bag or weights - with light carbon fiber tripods that's a must. Whenever there's more than a breeze you need the weights because carbon fiber flexes more than aluminum or steel & is more likely to "shiver" in a brisk wind.

When I take my moon pictures I usually put a weight under the tripod even though it's aluminium, set the timer for 9 seconds before the shutter trips, lock up the DSLR mirror, and then I put a 2 lb sandbag across the top of the camera so that the shutter tripping causes less shake.

Interesting. I just noticed the "someone" thing. :D Myself, I prefer to have my servants carry my photo gear and then I instruct them on how to take the image. Sometimes I just screw in the camera to a camera mount I had surgically implanted to the tops of their heads.

No, if anything I use the shoulder rig to put the weight back to my chest. I thought the "weights" were for tuning the resonance of the bullet as it makes the barrel twist & move. More accurate that way. Less muzzle rise too.

Great moments in damage control:

"First of all, I didn't help [Obama] win," Christie told Barbara Walters. "I was doing my job."

"The fact of the matter is President Obama won the election pretty comfortably… I was doing my job as I saw fit to do it. And I told the truth, like I always do. The president did step up and help tremendously in New Jersey."

When the two men flew in the president's helicopter Marine One to survey storm damage ahead of the election, Christie said he made his allegiance clear.

"I said, you know, I'm not voting for you," he told Walters. "And he said, 'I never thought you were.'"

Why the fuck would you say that to the guy who is about to give you hundreds of millions of dollars in disaster relief?

Yeah, he's earned that no drama Obama nickname. My favorite example of how cool the president is how he was joking around during the White House Correspondents Dinner while at the same time behind the scenes monitoring the Bin Laden mission. I think that's why while I value experience in a leader, I do look at personality as well and I think Obama "has it" in a way that neither of his opponents did.

10 percent.

... Svoboda's platform aims for nothing less than a "social and national revolution" in Ukraine. Associations with "National Socialism," therefore, are no accident. The party was formerly known as the "Social-National Party of Ukraine."

Yet in 2004, the party and its leader, Oleg Tiahnibok, were expelled from a political union with Nascha Ukraina, or "Our Ukraine." Grounds for the expulsion was a speech Tiahnibok gave that was both anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant, causing an uproar in Ukraine.

Tiahnibok sought a fresh start under the name "Svoboda." Naming the group "Freedom" was in vogue among right-wing radical groups throughout Europe at that time - due largely to the success of the Freedom Party of Austria. After the party's rechristening, Svoboda removed all symbols of National Socialism, including those used by Nazi military SS "death squad" groups....

Gordo

...In total the flight lasted 15 minutes, of which Gordo was weightless for 8.3 minutes, as the craft exited and re-entered Earth's atmosphere at a speed of over 10,000 miles per hour. The failure of Gordo's parachute meant that both he and the capsule were lost, despite efforts to recover them. It is believed that Gordo was alive at the time of impact...

He was alive (according to telemetry) until the capsule was lost. The capsule was lost when the final parachute failed to open and it all plunged into the south Atlantic. All telemetry stopped at that point. The remains (capsule or Gordo) were never found.

Which is why it's important to not merely teach history but make it relatable. I remember when we learned about the Holocaust when I was in 8th grade. We were assigned a random child. I still remember some details about her. Her father was a WWI veteran. Hmmm... how to address Fischer's inane statements about not being able to afford the reconstruction efforts in NY/NJ.

Let's see.
1) Debt ceiling is artificial construct and can be raised by Congress and the President with no trouble.

2) Cut defense spending - say on the F-22 or F-35 program by an equivalent amount.

3) Tax stupidity. We'd generate billions with the greatest ease. Extra surcharge for derpocity.

And the costs of not rebuilding are even greater. But let's just ignore that next time there's a natural disaster in Fischer's neck of the woods. I'm sure he'll be first in line for assistance - and at the head of the line when the government can't respond quickly enough because it doesn't have the funds to make that work because his fellow economic nitwits have cut those programs to the bone.

Republican lawmaker’s proposal exempted husband from Michigan ‘right to work’ law

State Rep. Lisa Posthumus Lyons (R) on Monday offered an amendment that would have added corrections officers like her husband, Brad, to the list of types of jobs not covered by the anti-union law. Police and firefighters had already been exempted from the legislation.

“When we talk about the brave women in police and fire we need to remember people in corrections,” Lyon explained earlier this week, according to MLive.com. “These guys work in conditions that we can’t even begin to imagine.”

“It’s not financial. It’s philosophy. I am saying we need to treat our corrections officers that way we treat our police men and women and firefighter men and women.”

Democrats, however, claimed that the proposal was an example of Republican hypocrisy.

“Why would she want to exempt her husband if this is such a great bill?” state House Democratic Caucus spokesperson Katie Carey asked. “We were kind of disgusted with it… We were just kind of disappointed that she would offer this amendment at the same time lauding this legislation.”

Norquist: Obama might ‘blow up small countries’ for fun

Anti-tax lobbyist Grover Norquist says that President Barack Obama will have to “blow up small countries” because Republicans will not let him have “any fun at all” spending taxpayers’ money.

“Obama will be on a very short leash, fiscally speaking, over the next four years,” Norquist told C-SPAN on Thursday. “He’s not gonna have any fun at all.”

“He may decide to go blow up small countries he can’t pronounce because it won’t be any fun to be here, because he won’t be able to spend the kind of cash he was hoping to.”

I can see why the GOP would worry about this. They don't want Obama to intrude on a traditional GOP activity.

Steve King: I Don’t Know What Happened In Benghazi But It’s Worse Than Watergate

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) has no idea what happened in Benghazi but he does know that it’s worse than Watergate and the Iran-Contra scandal times 10. Here’s King from a Washington Times article published on Wednesday:

“I believe that it’s a lot bigger than Watergate, and if you link Watergate and Iran-Contra together and multiply it times maybe 10 or so, you’re going to get in the zone where Benghazi is,” Mr. King said. “I don’t think the public has any idea, and I tell you, I don’t either, of the chronology of the events — what took place, and who was where doing what and why. And all the way down through — we still haven’t seen an autopsy report on the ambassador yet. Simple questions that you would ask in the first 24 hours have not been asked yet.”

I don't know what happened to Steve King in college, but I'm sure there is a dead hooker in there somewhere. I don't have any idea of what actually went down, but the questions need to be asked.

What I really need to invest in is a sandbag to use in tandem with the time-set exposure. I only have a Sony Cybershot (point and shoot) and until I can justify a better camera, I'm working really hard on just taking a basically good shot.

I find proping the camera on a firm base (when the tripod is not practical) and usig the timer is a big help. I can see the benefit of a sandbag making things even better.

Radio Host Stumps Michigan Governor By Asking How Union-Busting Will Help His State’s Economy

SNYDER: This is about more and better jobs coming to Michigan. If you look at Indiana, they did similar legislation in February. And literally, thousands of new jobs are coming to Indiana where this was a major consideration in companies’ decision to move to that state.

HOBSON: Are you saying then that companies decided to go to Indiana, for example, because there’s less union membership in Indiana?

SNYDER: No, and I don’t want to speak for the companies but it is very clear that companies are looking at Indiana that previously did not. [...]

HOBSON: Well, make that connection though. You’re saying that, by not requiring workers to pay union dues, that therefore companies are going to be more attracted to the state. Why would that be?

SNYDER: Well, that’s a question for the companies but there is a strong sense, and companies do look at that. That’s something we’ve suffered here.[...]

HOBSON: Union membership has fallen dramatically in Michigan and across the country and it’s not as though that has translated into some boom in employment. I see the point you’re making, but it hasn’t been borne out in the evidence, has it?

SNYDER: Well, it’s been borne out in the Indiana case.

Major news companies have been giving a platform for fossil fuel-backed “experts” to pen arguments against clean energy without disclosing the author’s connections to the industry, a new study from the Checks and Balances project finds.

Across sixty major news outlets, in the course of five years, the group found that major publications only disclosed oil industry ties six percent of the time, even when the authors represented organizations that receive hundreds of thousands — sometimes millions — of dollars from oil big wigs like the Koch Brothers and ExxonMobil.

Often times, papers identified the authors by other terms, including “conservative” or “libertarian,” but without any disclosure of the funders:

If this indictment stands and becomes precedent for law enforcement YOU will have less rights on the internet than you do in the physical world and should you post the wrong link in the wrong place, will be subject to arrest and up to 45 years imprisonment.

These are truly outrageous charges and I am forced to wonder if the people who were too dumb to get out of grand jury duty understood what the government was actually saying - that posting a link on the internet that may contain privileged information posted by a third party is a crime. That merely knowing someone's credit card number or other piece of privileged information and having a record of that knowledge is a crime. The Department of Defense often talks about the 21st century being defined by Information Warfare, if this indictment stands there will be a war on information itself.
