Right Wing Loons Recycle “Twitter Gulag” Persecution Fantasy, Inadvertent Hilarity Ensues

Whiny paranoids exchange group hugs, conspiracy theories

This morning I saw the following tweet scroll by in Tweetdeck…

And when I clicked the link to the #TGDN (“Twitter Gulag Defense Network”) hashtag I discovered a brave new world of right wing paranoia and whiny victimhood.

Yes, almost a year later and they’re still ranting away about the hilariously overblown persecution fantasy they call “Twitter Gulag,” their name for what happens when they act like abusive assholes and spam people with insulting tweets, then get reported for spam and blocked.

This time they’ve worked out a scheme where they all follow each other, because they’ve decided that if they have enough followers it’s a magic spell that prevents being imprisoned in Twitter Gulag (which, despite the dramatic name, amounts to nothing more than having their free Twitter accounts temporarily suspended for violating the terms of service).

It’s impossible for wingnuts to conceive that it might be their own lousy behavior causing this to happen, so of course they invent conspiracy theories about it — and one of the main conspiracy theories about “Twitter Gulag” is that it’s being orchestrated by … little old me!

That’s what I call a big win.

What they’re not saying, but what is also true, is that if they ever did get their magical immunity to being blocked and reported for spam, they would immediately turn around and use that immunity to block as many liberals as possible.

That’s the other side of this moronic fantasy; they can’t understand how the lefty socialists are outsmarting them, and they want to be the ones with that magical power.

No, it’s never their asshole behavior that’s the problem.

It’s that the recepient of their asshole behavior is too thin-skinned and can’t tolerate criticism. //

Notice how the wingnut whose tweet I quoted puts a slash after the ‘@’ symbol, so it doesn’t turn into a link to my profile. They think this is the magic formula for avoiding the dreaded Twitter Gulag.

These people are not right in the head.

Have at it conservatives. Organize on Twitter on a hashtag named after a Twitter conspiracy theory and one that puts you in a virtual prison also named after the Soviet prisons under Stalin. Good luck with that, I’m sure that the GOP will take you seriously.

I’m reading up on the history of how you supposedly learned about the “exploit” from Neal Rauhauser and then coordinated everything that followed by enlisting the aid of your mindlessly loyal, conservative- and freedom-hating gestapo/blog groupies. These “gulag” folks are going to LOVE this idea!

Michael Savage calls for a third, “nationalist” American political party to challenge the Republican Party on the right of the political spectrum

What could go wrong?

I think someone is hinting that he wants the job…

“You have the rudiments of a new party in this country called a Tea Party. They need to restructure their party. They need a charismatic leader, which they don’t have,” he said. “When you say Tea Party no one knows who the leader is because there is no leader. No man has stepped forward who can lead that party.”

Of course the “Nationalist party” wont be racist or white supremacist at all…err…right?

That’s perfect. Make a home for all the crypto-fascist freakshows, and call it “Nationalist”. Spade’s a spade, folks! It will certainly clarify things. I’m in favor, honestly.

They’ll talk up a good storm about it, but they’ll never take the leap. Folks out there talking about creating a new third party need to remember that A) there’s been dozens of third parties for ages that haven’t amounted to a damned thing and B) Paul proved it when he ran as the Libertarian presidential candidate in the 80s and not only lost, but had to switch back to the GOP just to get his old House seat back.

*Gadsden flags wave*

“Mr friends, today we celebrate victory!”

*loud cheers*

“Today we celebrate America!”

…They thought they were free…

“So the Gulag is no more?”

“No, my friend. We have brought those filthy liberals to their knees!”

…They thought it was over…

“Where once we were prisoners, we now stand liberated. We have won the day just as we said we would.”

…They were wrong…

“Charles, you can’t do this! Are you listening to me? You CAN’T do this!”

“Yes…I can.”

*Flash to scenes of burning Gadsden flags, cars on fire and crack teams of ponytail wearing henchmen roving the streets*

“This time will be different. This time, there will be no escape.”

“AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

“On this day, the Patriots will rise!”

“There’s too many of them. These Liberals just don’t give up!”

…One man will destroy them all…

“Charles Johnson must be eliminated. We must fight until the last man! Our Freedom is too valuable to do otherwise!”

…A prison without walls…

*sequence of chases, floggings and other torture*

…A warden without a soul…

“You and your ponytail can go straight to hell Charles!”

“You first.” *A knife flies towards the screen*

…This spring…

“This was not supposed to happen…this was NOT supposed to happen this way! Why would Dana lie to us?”

“She didn’t lie. She merely underestimated the enemy.”

“Charles really is out of his mind isn’t he?”

“Most liberals are.”

…only the crazy will survive…

“Oh God, Oh God, Oh GOD!!”

“You can kiss my ass, you right wing pukes!”

“No…not this way…not this way…”

Rep. Jim Jordan: No AR-15 background checks because ‘it’s about freedom’

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) says that gun buyers should face background checks for concealed carry handgun permits but not assault rifles because “it’s about freedom.”

“You’ve got to remember what the Second Amendment is about: It’s about freedom,” Jordan remarked.

“So if you’ve broken the law and committed a violent act, you should be able to go out and buy a semi-automatic assault weapon?” Van Hollen pressed.

“You shouldn’t be able to get a concealed carry permit, that’s for darn sure,” Jordan quipped without answering the question.

Iowa GOP complains about free elections

Bill Schickel, the co-chair of the Republican Party of Iowa, on Saturday blasted the dominance of Ron Paul supporters within the state party.

“The words are fine about reaching out and opening the doors of our party, but when are our chair, our executive director, our communications director, our finance director are all from the Campaign for Liberty that sends a message that is disenfranchising to many, many of our Republicans,” he told GOP central committee members. “So, that is one of the reasons I am running, to bring all of these groups together.”

SJ, what motherboard do you have? You’re most likely gonna have to get the mass storage drivers, put them on a USB stick, and load them in Windows setup so that Windows can install.

re: #173 SpaceJesus

anybody know anything about building a computer from scratch?

im attempting to do just that, and have everything plugged in and ready to go. problem is windows 7. when i boot from the disk, windows gets my hopes up like it’s ready to be installed on my brand new out of the box hard drive, then asks me what hard drive to install it on, then says there are no hard drives. bios says the hard drive is there at startup. windows is dumb.

how do i make windows not dumb?

How to Build a Computer from Scratch, Lesson 4: Installing Your Operating System

Step One: Edit your BIOS

When you first start up your computer, it’ll tell you to press a key to enter setup, usually DEL. This takes you to the setup of your Basic Input/Output System, or BIOS. Here, you can configure some of the lowest-level aspects of your new machine. You may not actually need to edit any of these settings, but it’s a good idea to go through, get acquainted with them, and make sure everything’s in good order before moving on.

Note that the BIOS will be a little bit different on different brands of motherboard, so your screen may not look exactly like the images here, but it should be close.

First, we should make sure that everything’s been installed correctly. If you have a System Information page in your BIOS, head there and make sure the amount of RAM listed is the same amount you put in. If it isn’t detecting all of your RAM, some of it might not be seated correctly, so go back and fix that before continuing. If there isn’t a System Information page in your BIOS, your motherboard probably lists the amount of RAM it detects on the POST screen, right after you press the power button.

Find the SATA configuration option, and make sure its configured as AHCI. If you’re running Windows XP you’ll need to change this to IDE, otherwise AHCI is probably what you want to go with.

Lastly, find the “Boot Order” or “Boot Priority” page. Make sure your DVD drive is the first drive on the list (or your USB drive if you’re installing from a flash drive), and that the hard drive you’ll be installing to is second. Note that some BIOS utilities split this up into two menus—one for setting the boot order for your different media (CD-ROM, hard disks, USB disks) and another that lets you choose the order of just the hard drives.

If you don’t see your hard drive listed, it may not be plugged in correctly or it may be dead. Turn your computer off and re-check the connection if necessary.

These are the most crucial BIOS options you want to tweak, but there’s a lot of other stuff going on in there. I encourage you to explore and look things up that you don’t know, since it has some other useful settings. If you want to know more about your BIOS options, our friends at the How-To Geek have a nice rundown of useful tweaks, so check that out when you have some time. For now, we’re going to get on with the installation process.

What they’re not saying, but what is also true, is that if they ever did get their magical immunity to being blocked and reported for spam, they would immediately turn around and block as many liberals as possible.

That’s the other side of this moronic fantasy - they can’t understand how the lefty socialists are outsmarting them, and they want to be the ones with that magical power.

The right-wing whackadoodle mentality is something to behold. These are the same people who claim “Liberalism is a mental disorder”. Sounds like some massive projection on their part.

It’s like with their whole “An armed society is a polite society” meme. First, it’s not a quote from Robert Heinlein himself. It’s a line from the book “Beyond This Horizon”. The society described in that book is a genetically engineered society of übermenschen who use dueling as means of politics and social control, with themes of reincarnation, etc.

Now maybe the RW’ers think they’re a bunch of übermensch; I honestly don’t know, because I don’t think like that, nor do I subscribe to fantasies of racial, ethnic or genetic superiority. But the few RWNJ’s I’ve met in my life are usually in pretty bad shape, many with serious illnesses, and in a eugenics-based society, they’d be the first ones eliminated.

Report; Shell hoped to avoid taxes on rig

Officials with Royal Dutch Shell admit the company was trying to avoid $7 million in Alaska taxes by moving an oil rig to Seattle for maintenance.

The rig ran aground off the coast of Alaska. That leaves the company, which has headquarters in the Netherlands and Britain, liable for the tax as well as millions more to repair the rig and to reimburse the U.S. and Alaska governments for the cost of responding to the accident.

The company would not have had to pay equipment tax if the rig, the Kulluk, had been out of Alaska at the end of the year, The Independent, a London newspaper, said. But the grounding during a bad storm left it still in Alaskan waters on Dec. 31.

“It’s fair to say that the current tax structure related to vessels of the type influenced the timing of our departure. It would have cost Shell multiple millions to keep the rigs here,” a Shell spokesman said.

Another spokesman said that a “two-week window of favorable weather” in the forecast had more to do with the decision to move the rig than tax considerations.

As I said upthread, it doesn’t really matter if the HD is formatted, partitioned or what, because Windows setup is gonna make you create a big enough partition to install to, provided that the proper SATA drivers are installed and the drive is detected in Windows setup.

Even if the drive has no partitions, as long as it can load the proper SATA drivers and detect the drive, Win7 setup is just gonna see it as unallocated space and make you partition it.

re: #254 Gus

I’ve said it countless times. These right wingers love to “play war” even when there isn’t a war. Typically they’re also chickenhawks. Those are the worst of the lot. But the rest they’ll talk about things making it sound like a combat operation. Really goofy.

LOL, yeah, they’re never stalking someone on Twitter and taking screenshots, they’re “gathering intel”. Charles is never tweeting to his followers or members of LGF, he’s “collaborating with his gestapo”.

It’s so absurd. It’s like when I was a little kid and used to pretend that our front sidewalk was a river full of crocodiles, and if you weren’t able to successfully jump all the way across, then you’d fall in and be eaten.

Recent news from oppositeworld:

“Let me be clear, I do not support default on the debt and we should never default on the debt and the only players who are threatening to default are President Obama and Harry Reid. This is an issue, and earlier in the show you played the President threatening default. In any given month tax revenue are 200 billion and interest on the debt is 30 or 40 billion. There is plenty of revenue to service the debt and any responsible President would’ve stood at that podium and said ‘whatever happens with the debt ceiling, we will always pay our debt. We’ll never default on the debt’ and the reason the President isn’t doing that is he’s trying to scare people and raise the specter of financial apocalypse.”
- Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)

So it’s Obama’s fault that the debt ceiling is being used by the GOP as a hostage to force spending cuts in earned benefit programs. Got it.

Look on the MB; hook your hard drive(s) up to any of the first four SATA ports (SATA_0 through SATA_3) and hook your CD/DVD drive(s) up on SATA_4 or SATA_5.

Then, boot into BIOS and go to the Integrated Peripherals tab and tell me what all of your SATA settings (OnChip SATA Type, OnChip SATA Port4/5 Type, OnChip SATA Port as ESP) are currently at.

I use Gigabyte boards, but I’m also reading your manual.

So, in theory, I can tweet “Join #TGDN”, get these idiots to follow me, and then start ripping on conservatives just to mess with them.

I could even reply individually to a few, as long as I don’t start spamming them.

Interesting…

Their theory is that people that have 3000 or more followers never get their accounts suspended by twitter even if they are reported by multiple people for spam. Considering that this is all done by a computer algorithm they may be right, the program probably does look at things like the age of the account, number of previous tweets, and number of followers.

That is certainly what I would be looking at first as a human moderator trying to assess if someone was being reported for spam legitimately or punitively.

Notice how the wingnut whose tweet I quoted puts a slash after the ‘@’ symbol, so it doesn’t turn into a link to my profile. They think this is the magic formula for avoiding the dreaded Twitter Gulag.

These people are not right in the head.

Conspiracists never are. The belief in a “Twitter Gulag” is, like all belief in conspiracy theories, a sign of a mind in flight from reality.*

Credit to the National Post’s Jonathan Kay for the phrasing.

By reporting non spam tweets as spam, they are risking having their own accounts suspended.

Twitter Rules. They’re already taking their chances:

Spam: You may not use the Twitter service for the purpose of spamming anyone. What constitutes “spamming” will evolve as we respond to new tricks and tactics by spammers. Some of the factors that we take into account when determining what conduct is considered to be spamming are:

• If you have followed a large amount of users in a short amount of time;

• If you have followed a large amount of users in a short amount of time;
• If you have followed and unfollowed people in a short time period, particularly by automated means (aggressive follower churn);
• If you repeatedly follow and unfollow people, whether to build followers or to garner more attention for your profile;
• If you have a small number of followers compared to the amount of people you are following;
• If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates;
• If you post misleading links;
• If a large number of people are blocking you;
• The number of spam complaints that have been filed against you;
• If you post duplicate content over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account;
• If you post multiple unrelated updates to a topic using #;
• If you post multiple unrelated updates to a trending or popular topic;
• If you send large numbers of duplicate @replies or mentions;
• If you send large numbers of unsolicited @replies or mentions in an attempt to spam a service or link;
• If you add a large number of unrelated users to lists in an attempt to spam a service or link;
• If you repeatedly post other users’ Tweets as your own;
• If you have attempted to “sell” followers, particularly through tactics considered aggressive following or follower churn;
• Creating or purchasing accounts in order to gain followers;
• Using or promoting third-party sites that claim to get you more followers (such as follower trains, sites promising “more followers fast,” or any other site that offers to automatically add followers to your account);
• If you create false or misleading Points of Interest;
• If you create Points of Interest to namesquat or spam.

LOL. It’s still a fun movie, for me at least. I went and saw it with one of my students at our local theater. She commented, “Only you, an American, could sit here eating popcorn and drinking RC Cola while billions of people are being wiped out horribly.”

I said, “Damned straight. God bless America”, with a big grin. She was ribbing me of course, and we both knew it.

I saw that with my brother and niece over Christmas on video. The science and how they portrayed it failed to activate my Suspension of Disbelief given what they put on the screen. I (and not my brother the geologist) was constantly saying “It doesn’t work that way…” and my niece was chiding us with “movie killers!” when we blasted to really crappy science, economics, and everything else in that picture.

I actually hold it as a good candidate for “Worst Science Portrayal in a Movie” ever.

I took Winston on a walk and stopped at the mailbox. Previously I received notification I was part of a class action suit against Metlife insurance.
We won! I just got my settlement check.. $2.40
I pitched it and all the paperwork to sign also.

I got those all the time too and pitch them as a matter of habit. In order to file my financial adviser has to do additional work checking records on when I owned the stock in question - and that work is worth more than my share of the settlement even if it was done by a clerk.

Might as well let my share help increase the size of everyone else’s a thousandth of a cent. Marginal utility of the dollar and all that.

I quite agree. Mutated neutrinos, I believe, was the cause, which activated the Earth’s core and caused it to go all sorts of funky. Laughable science. Even Pavla (the student) was like, “Whaaaaat?!” at the ‘scientific reason’ for the catastrophe.

re: #504 lawhawk

Quite possibly. But 2012 started with mutated neutrinos playing microwave with the Earth’s core and destabilizing the crust; leading to:
Earth fracturing and quakes that ignored ground water, buildings not having basements (the supermarket cracking open), and even more from there.

Yellowstone going from sitting there to full volcano on about five minutes. And then an aircraft trying to outrun the edge of the expanding dust cloud (implying a tail wind) manages to nicely maintain airspeed just after takeoff. I don’t recall aeronautics working that way. ;)

Asia shifting 1200 miles in under 24 hours - the energy involved in that would have dumped or cooked everything.

Arks much larger than aircraft carriers (and all the infrastructure for building them and then outfitting them) being made in the Himalayas in under three years. With only a few dirt roads leading in.

And that’s just off the top of my head after trying to forget the entire movie.
