The Little Green Footballs User’s Guide

The LGF User’s Guide, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born
LGF • Views: 214,231

One of the things we’ve needed for a long, long time is finally here: a real User’s Guide to the many features of this whacked out website. It’s a lot more fun to code than to document code, and since I could never seem to find time to write this monster, I enlisted LGF contributor Wrenchwench to do it for us. And she’s created a very readable, concise introduction to LGF, broken up into three parts. (Many thanks to Wrenchwench for her terrific work on this!)

The first part deals with what you see and what you can do at LGF when you haven’t registered an account with us. The second part explains the mind-boggling superpowers you gain by registering an account, and the third part is an introduction to creating your own LGF Pages — a powerful blogging feature available free to all registered users.

Here are the links to the three sections; each section has an index to its subsections so you can easily find a topic you’re looking for:

Totally my non-expert conjecture and nothing here should be taken as fact, but stuff coming out of the news conference on the SFO crash today doesn’t sound like it’s pointing in any direction other than pilot error, unfortunately.

Monitoring pilot observed 3 red PAPI lights (which went to 4 - THIS IS BAD, OK?), the assumption was the auto-throttle was taking care of the speed (which they didn’t notice it wasn’t until 7 seconds before impact)…

She pretty much said clearly that it is the pilot’s responsibility to monitor speed regardless of whether auto-throttle is being used or not.

Weakest.sauce.ever.

Even though I as a person, as a father, as a leader thought, ‘That’s torture — We shouldn’t be doing that kind of thing,’ I discovered that it’s actually a much harder question to interpret this 1994 statute, which I found very vague,” Mr. Comey, 52, said at the hearing.

Many senators, legal scholars and human rights advocates have long believed that the 1994 statue clearly banned waterboarding.

We prosecuted waterboarding as a war crime in WWII, Comey knew this.

The spots of the hyena

Edward Snowden was “put on the map” by Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian. Greenwald is an “asset” for sure but one that hasn’t been burned. As “Snowden” plays out, Greenwald will recede into the background to be drawn upon next time he is needed.

Where Greenwald holds a job, albeit a puppet of the Guardian, a British paper once known for its “opposition” leaning and now for its relationship to Her Majesty’s intelligence services, many others, pundits, bloggers, academics, columnists, “activists and experts” are harder to understand.

Toward that end, it is necessary to develop criteria not unlike that used by governments’ award security clearances, except, of course, in the case of Snowden.

Here are a few of the questions we might want to ask:

• Why do you hold the beliefs you do, what in your upbringing or personal life has led you to decide to make the sacrifices and to take the risks that opposing great power can represent?

• Where do you get the money to live?

• Who pays for your travel, your hotels and pays to have your books printed that nobody ever buys?

• Why do you avoid certain positions, fail to mention names or, as with many, seem to not even know Israel exists?

As we have, of late, been inundated with hoaxes, endless “gatekeepers” and literal armies of people who live “out of thin air” or who, though seemingly reviled, manage to get on BBC whenever they want, perhaps our investigatory efforts might well go to another level.

• In reading your body of work and reviewing your broadcast appearances, there seems to be a pattern of reverting to “talking points” that closely parallel those of groups such as the Heritage Foundation or AIPAC. Can you explain?

• In reviewing your body of work, some facts and conclusions seem to be purposefully steered almost as though you had been “tasked” with a need to dissemble or obfuscate. Can you explain?

• Similarly, when reviewing that same work, we note your writing style varies significantly from other works. Is someone actually giving you articles to publish under your name?

Then again, we could get more direct still.

• Who is your handler?

And so it goes…

TEH JUICE AND NEOCONS!

I weep for my state.

June of this year:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry extends drought emergency in most of state

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has renewed a drought emergency in more than 200 counties throughout the state, authorizing “all necessary measures” be implemented to aid response efforts.

“Prolonged dry conditions continue to increase the threat of wildfire across many portions of the state,” the governor’s proclamation said this week. “These drought conditions have reached historic levels and continue to pose an imminent threat to public health, property and the economy.”

Low rainfall and record high temperatures have reduced water supplies and aquifer levels, threatening many parts of the state, the proclamation said.

How ‘bout that, y’all?

Democrat attacks GOP’s budget ‘abomination’ for increasing spending on nukes

Representative John Garamendi (D-CA) slammed his Republicans colleagues on Tuesday for prioritizing the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) over “life saving” infrastructure.

Garamendi said the proposed energy and water budget ignored the need to “protect human life,” because it would spend more than $7 billion on nuclear weapons while cutting funding for levees. He said flooding in his congressional district in northern California posed a serious and potentially deadly risk to his constituents.

“Thousands of lives are at risk, yet the majority cannot seem to find the money necessary to protect human life, but plenty of money for nuclear weapons,” he added. “The [U.S. Army] Corps of Engineers’ budget is decimated and for the last three years we have not been able to get one new project, even though human life is at risk.”

The Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act would cut the Corps of Engineers’ budget by $104 million in 2014. The budget bill would also increase spending on the NNSA’s nuclear weapons activities by $98 million, though other areas of the agency would face a $235 million cut.

The Tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo

ED: You see a well groomed garden. In the middle, on a small hill, you
see a gazebo.
ERIC: A gazebo? What color is it?
ED: (Pause) It’s white, Eric.
ERIC: How far away is it?
ED: About 50 yards.
ERIC: How big is it?
ED: (Pause) It’s about 30 ft across, 15 ft high, with a pointed top.
ERIC: I use my sword to detect good on it.
ED: It’s not good, Eric. It’s a gazebo.
ERIC: (Pause) I call out to it.
ED: It won’t answer. It’s a gazebo.
ERIC: (Pause) I sheathe my sword and draw my bow and arrows. Does it
respond in any way?
ED: No, Eric, it’s a gazebo!
ERIC: I shoot it with my bow (roll to hit). What happened?
ED: There is now a gazebo with an arrow sticking out of it.
ERIC: (Pause) Wasn’t it wounded?
ED: OF COURSE NOT, ERIC! IT’S A GAZEBO!
ERIC: (Whimper) But that was a +3 arrow!
ED: It’s a gazebo, Eric, a GAZEBO! If you really want to try to
destroy it, you could try to chop it with an axe, I suppose, or you
could try to burn it, but I don’t know why anybody would even try.
It’s a @#$%!! gazebo!
ERIC: (Long pause. He has no axe or fire spells.) I run away.
ED: (Thoroughly frustrated) It’s too late. You’ve awakened the gazebo.
It catches you and eats you.
ERIC: (Reaching for his dice) Maybe I’ll roll up a fire-using mage so
I can avenge my Paladin.

No fence will ever suffice if the demand is zero surreptitious entrants. There would be more tunnels and more seafaring. The whole issue of border security is completely unrelated to immigration reform. It is only a way to try to defeat immigration reform. My biggest disappointment in the process so far is that Obama and the other Democrats took the ‘border security’ issue on as part of immigration reform. They were duped.

re: #162 Charles Johnson

Pretty sure that was a highly sarcastic comment.

This seem rather stern to me:

For Greenwald, like for Nader, the evils of liberals loom far larger than the evils of conservatives. The most annoying question in the world is the one posed to them most frequently: Aren’t the Republicans worse? They are loath to give their critics the satisfaction of an affirmative response, which they fear will justify ignoring their urgent denunciations. So much of their intellectual energy is devoted to formulating complex chains of reasoning as to why just the opposite is true. “The only difference between [Gore and Bush] is the velocity at which their knees hit the floor,” said Nader. Greenwald insisted that “even if Obama is the lesser of two evils, he’s the more effective of two evils.” Statements like this make their putative allies more nervous, or even provokes them to break with them altogether. But this only convinces them all the more deeply of their uncorruptable virtue.

The thing is, Greenwald can’t help alienating people who would probably otherwise support him, because his ego is so massive he responds to any and all criticism with cutting, nasty, below-the-belt comments.

Most people eventually start making the connection between this egomaniacal defensiveness and his writing, and start seeing the lies by omission and distortions and libertarian-flavored paranoia, and catch on to Greenwald’s game.

This is his moment in the sun, and he’s acting like a total ass.

Politico backs Pincus over Greenwald

Pincus did not immediately respond to POLITICO’s request for comment, but the truth is that the factual errors Greenwald takes issue with here are sort of negligible.

Despite how troubling the NSA’s surveillance practices are, the American people seem content to live with them. Moreover, the news cycle has moved on, dominated now by The Zimmerman trial, Egypt, et al. Finally, Greenwald doesn’t seem to have any more big revelations up his sleeve.

Maybe that’s not the way it should be, but that’s the way it is.

UPDATE (10:10 a.m.): Greenwald emails POLITICO: “There are many more domestic stories coming, and big ones, and soon.”

Right Glenn, huge stories and soon.

Looks like John Good was the second instance of defense witness violating sequestration:

Zimmerman’s friend, financial supporter and key witness sat in Court before his own testimony. He then told the jury he loved Zimmerman like a son, spent about $1,700 in clothes so that he could show “respect for the process” and also wrote a check for $2,500 and contributed $500 to Zimmerman’s defense. Despite experts saying you need close familial relationship for voice identification, Donnelly testified, that, “There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that it’s George Zimmerman.” After his testimony, prosecutors claimed unfair surprise and asked Judge Debra Nelson to exclude his statements. Prosecutor Richard Mantei said the defense failed to inform the prosecution that Donnelly was going to testify on the 911 call. During his deposition, he denied having listened to the recording. The judge denied striking his testimony.

Evidence reveals he sat in Court. Not only that, but he sat in Court during crucial witness testimony. The defense usually has the obligation to make sure its witnesses follow the rule. The State should have reported it and made it an issue for the judge. Bailiffs and court personnel are also tuned into these concerns. The ball was dropped. The question is was this a violation and what is the remedy?

Was this a violation?
The extent of the violation depends on what the “evidence” shows- what he saw, what he heard. Sometimes there is no harm from a witness hearing attorney argument or even other witness testimony. Some error is harmless. However, it appears that Donnelly attended crucial witness testimony.

I have always understood the need to plan pregnancies. My child, and I have no desire to have more than one, was planned with my wife. I was a working dad at one point, but when that job evaporated it was obvious that my marketable skills weren’t going to be as profitable as my wife’s. Worse, the cost of day care was greater than any income I could receive. The fact that I’m a stay-at-home-dad still gets me questioning looks, and pointed comments when people find that out. I refuse to feel any shame for what I do.

How cryptography is a key weapon in the fight against empire states
What began as a means of retaining individual freedom can now be used by smaller states to fend off the ambitions of larger ones
By Julian Assange

The original cypherpunks were mostly Californian libertarians. I was from a different tradition but we all sought to protect individual freedom from state tyranny. Cryptography was our secret weapon. It has been forgotten how subversive this was. Cryptography was then the exclusive property of states, for use in their various wars. By writing our own software and disseminating it far and wide we liberated cryptography, democratised it and spread it through the frontiers of the new internet.

The resulting crackdown, under various “arms trafficking” laws, failed. Cryptography became standardised in web browsers and other software that people now use on a daily basis. Strong cryptography is a vital tool in fighting state oppression. That is the message in my book, Cypherpunks. But the movement for the universal availability of strong cryptography must be made to do more than this. Our future does not lie in the liberty of individuals alone.

Our work in WikiLeaks imparts a keen understanding of the dynamics of the international order and the logic of empire. During WikiLeaks’ rise we have seen evidence of small countries bullied and dominated by larger ones or infiltrated by foreign enterprise and made to act against themselves. We have seen the popular will denied expression, elections bought and sold, and the riches of countries such as Kenya stolen and auctioned off to plutocrats in London and New York…

So much nihilism and paranoia mixed in.

Well, yeah. Of course. Women should keep their legs shut till they’re married, then submit to all of their husband’s desires, but if they do that, and get pregnant, and the guy walks out, it was their fault - they chose wrongly or didn’t submit enough.

re: #185 Stephen T.

You are awesome!!!

1) This is the kind of stuff that shouldn’t make it to the jury.

2) It is also completely irrelevant to the fact that Zimmerman went looking for trouble while armed and ended up killing Martin.

Exactly. But it does reek of desperation, so if it does reach the jury, it’s not likely to help convince them Zimmerman wasn’t persuing Martin (unless he was looking for free porn).

KNOW YOUR DOPE FIEND. YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! You will not be able to see his eyes because of the Tea-Shades, but his knuckles will be white from inner tension and his pants will be crusted with semen from constantly jacking off when he can’t find a rape victim. He will stagger and babble when questioned. He will not respect your badge. The Dope Fiend fears nothing. He will attack, for no reason, with every weapon at his command-including yours. BEWARE. Any officer apprehending a suspected marijuana addict should use all necessary force immediately. One stitch in time (on him) will usually save nine on you. Good luck.

Not sure if this has been addressed, but something I’d like to see for part 4 is a bit about the culture, in-jokes, and history of LGF (troll bbq, the basic Zion Overlords check cartoon, Stinky, common sources quoted for humor, how the posting and commenting culture has changed, welcoming hatchlings, upding/downding methodologies, etc.).

As I haven’t been here all that long, I don’t think I’m quite qualified to construct a page like that yet.

I think men do to, they just don’t crave the tactile part of it. I’ve noticed men love to be around little kids, just not necessarily interacting with them.

This man does (need baby/toddler fixes, and loves interacting with them).

Excellent example of why we need feminism. NO ONE should be made to feel “less than” because they care for their children. (or ever)Excellent example of why we need feminism. NO ONE should be made to feel “less than” because they care for their children. (or ever)

When my grandson was born, I was surprised to find out that my SIL got 6 months maternity leave from his $$$ bank employer, and my daughter only got 3 months leave from her ICU nursing care job.

That started a pattern of him deciding to more work from home, and spending more time with the (now) two grand kids.
