Activist Son of Stormfront Founder Renounces White Nationalism

US News • Views: 31,248

Derek Black, the son of the former Alabama Klan leader who now runs the largest racist Web forum in the world, has renounced white nationalism, saying that he had been through “a gradual awakening process” and apologizing for his past activism.

In an E-mail (pdf) to the editor of this blog this week, Black, 24, wrote that he had come to see the arguments of white nationalism as “principally flawed,” adding that he had realized that American society is marked by an “overwhelming disparity between white power and that of everyone else” and that white nationalism was really about “an entrenched desire to preserve white power at the expense of others.”

“Advocating for white nationalism means that we are opposed to minority attempts to elevate themselves to a position equal to our own,” wrote Black, a junior at the elite New College of Florida. “It is an advocacy that I cannot support, having grown past my bubble, talked to the people I affected, read more widely, and realized the necessary impact my actions had on people I never wanted to harm.”

It was a remarkable statement for Black, whose father, Don Black, once served time in prison for plotting a racist invasion of a small Caribbean nation and founded and still runs Stormfront, a white supremacist Web forum. The younger Black was raised in the racist movement, had by age 12 created a racist children’s page on his father’s website, and until recently hosted a radio show featuring racist guests.

Yeah racism is learned. Anyone ever hear the story of the two German separated twins. One becomes a Hitler Youth member and the other is raised Jewish. I’m definitely a firm believer that we are products of our environments.

The fact that Fox News lost hundreds of millions of dollars every year for the first 8-10 years, and Rupert kept it going. The money it makes now will take 15-20 years to make up for initial losses, by which time Rupert will be long dead… but in the meantime, he was able to get candidates he wanted into Congress and the White House and his personal income tax cuts were humongous.

Some related Google translate poetry:

The most likely says that in the Spain of Philip IV was a coppersmith (sales of boilers, salamanders, pots and pans, utensils etc.) very famous for his pranks.

But it happened that once, another crook eager to play a joke and make fun of him, entered his trade and asked to buy a pan. With the greatest desparpajos the coppersmith reached him it was broken at the bottom.

The buyer, apparently ignoring the failure of the pan, paid the amount of the element satisfied, but did so with fake money carelessly also received the coppersmith.

When the tinker warned that his buyer was withdrawing grinning, said pointedly: “heh, heh … the fry will laugh” as providing the wrong time that his client would have to bear wanting to use the pan.

Once the buyer heard this sentence, he replied in the same tone, saying “ha ha … when counting will mourn” the unpleasant surprise sure to take the trader to make profits count day.

Disturbing news for historians and archaeology comes out of Turkey. Reports are filtering out that historic Byzantine structures have been bulldozed.

Turkey: Istanbul’s Historic Lettuce Fields Fall Victim to Urbanization

There’s a very interesting aside in this article:

This week, workers from the local Fatih municipality started bulldozing the fields with little warning, as part of a plan to create a large park in the area. While there’s nothing wrong with building parks, the scant details given by the municipality about its plans have left locals and historians concerned, particularly since the Yedikule gardens are considered part of an area that is under UNESCO protection as a cultural heritage site. The fact that the local municipality is the same one that was responsible for the complete tearing down of Sulukule, a nearby neighborhood with a long-standing Roma population whose own history in the area went back for centuries, only raised concerns that little would be done in terms of preservation when it comes to this latest project.

Everybody knows about Gezi Park, but the systemic destruction goes much deeper. There have been further heavy handed actions, including naming a bridge after a Sultan who killed off truckloads of Alevis and placing an airport on a wetlands and migratory bird route. And a forest.

So Turkey is modernizing. Not to support this sort of activity, but how many historic/natural sites did we bulldoze in America and Europe in the name of progress before we even started to consider that it was not always a good idea?

Well, let’s hope he’s sincere and this conversion isn’t just a temporary blip. Considering who supports his mother, it’s probably understandable how he might have gained entrance to this “elite” school.

His mother, Chloe Black, seems to have done well for herself, while retaining her white supremacist views. So, it appears that her sugar baron boss indirectly funds the racist views of her and husband, Don Black. Not surprising, though, given the background of the Fanjul brothers: en.wikipedia.org

As someone who worked for over 45 yrs, I can tell you, though, that it’s much harder being someone who advocates for civil rights and is an activist in that movement to get and retain a job once the boss finds out what you do on the side. It can even color your job references because you’re seen as a “trouble-maker”. In the south, it’s just not done. I can’t tell you how many times I was called a n***** lover and feminist b**** by other whites. What a weird place to draw a line in the sand.

Sometimes it really is motivated by an image, Obdi. And I agree with Gus that the cover is bad, showing a terrorist in such a way (‘airbrushed’ being one description I heard). If Rolling Stone wanted a man on the cover for its story, there were plenty of current or former military personnel at the site on the bombing and plenty of cops who did crucial work hunting the terrorist brothers down. Those are the men who should be portrayed well, so that America might better know its heroes.

I undersatnd people being upset at the cover. I don’t understand how that translates to people not being upset about it being assholes. I guess because we don’t care enough about the people who are upset?

For me, whenever I see pictures of the victims, that’s where I get the pang. That’s where I want to turn the magazine face down and not look at it. And that’s generally where I feel unease at money being made with the image, of a dead victim. And yet I’ve seen pictures of the victims suggested as a replacement.

I read the article and wasn’t impressed by the cheap psychology. Plenty of people have had worse childhoods and are under the sway of their religion or family, but escape and find their own way, even at a young age. This guy also had plenty of opportunities and seemed to be popular and had extra cash (probably from his drug dealing), but he kept a lot from people, too, esp his innermost thoughts. Others who have had less and have been abandoned have survived and don’t go on to do the unspeakable as he did. Maybe this guy wasn’t as smart as people thought he was if he simply went along to get along.

A lot of people thought Timothy McVeigh was an OK guy, too.

I’ll let the pros try to figure out this guy’s psychology, but don’t excuse him for his heinous crime because of it.

From this website, it appears most of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Just from that information, I can guess this is a school specifically founded to help lower-income kids overcome academic problems.
schooldigger.com

That same site has test scores for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders for the last three years. The 5th graders’ FCAT reading and math scores are pretty close to the state average. More tellingly, those 5th graders improved over their 3rd grade scores.

So, let’s not dump on Glades just because of its association with the Fanjul family. Guilt by association is a bad practice, y’know.

It appears to me that FL schools as a whole are failing pretty much, but with only a 1 star ranking, Glades is way down there. schooldigger.com

There is plenty of hypocrisy to go around. Snowden totally did not expect to spend more than a few hours in the Moscow airport, he was so convinced that he would board a flight to his asylum haven, where he would enjoy the sweet fruits of book and movie deals for the rest of his life.

Greets and saluts from the sweltering NYC metro area. Going to hit 97 here today, but can’t complain so long as the AC is running. *fingers crossed*

Meanwhile, it looks like one of the nation’s oldest papers is circling the drain. The paper? The New York Post:

Yes, the paper hits the sweet spot when it comes to outrageous headlines and pushing a conservative angle to excess, but it can and has broken some pretty important stories over the years. However, since Murdoch split up his company into separate divisions, the paper has started shedding writers/editors/staff in increasing numbers. That leaves fewer reporters to go and break stories, which means further cuts as the paper relies more and more on wire reports and others to break the stories for them.

It’s not a good situation by any stretch, and it serves as a reminder that we still need functioning news outlets to do the job of breaking stories - after corruption never goes away (as the long list of indicted politicians in just the past year indicates). The names change, but the papers need to keep the politicians honest.

re: #72 Justanotherhuman

I agree about the funding of public schools (being a teacher, and all), but the current agenda of education “reformers” is to dismantle public education in favor of the “free market.” As for the “segregation,” as you term it, this seems to be school with a specific mission — to educate lower-income kids in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood. Segregation suggests a concerted effort to keep one group or another out. That does not seem to be the case. In fact, having white kids there could very well require busing them in from another neighborhood. Maybe having those white kids would raise the overall test score average, but it’s not entirely clear that a mixed school population automatically helps the lower-performing students. On the other hand, a mixed-race school would reduce racial tensions, which Florida seems to have its fair share of. Since it’s a charter school, it can set its own rules about who can attend it, so all we can do is watch it and see what happens to those kids once they graduate.

79 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 18, 2013 6:29:17am
80 Justanotherhuman  Thu, Jul 18, 2013 6:34:58am

Thanks for that. The reduction of racial tensions was what I was implying in the “mixed school population”, not just raising scores. Unfortunately, when public schools close, they are generally in poorer areas (I know this happened in Charlotte, NC while new schools were being built in white areas and is happening in Chicago), so those areas generally remain under-served. Charter school operators are more than happy to jump into the void, though, and I’m not sure their efforts, however “noble”, are getting the desired results.

Very true. There are privateers who see education as a cash cow. They come in, convince the local boards of ed that they can “save” a school or a demographic, get funding, and do basically nothing.

Then there are others, like the KIPP schools, that do a good job. I mention KIPP because one of my former students is a KIPP principal.

I’d prefer we spend time, effort and money on improving education for every child, and not specific demographics, be it low-income or gifted & talented, but that idea doesn’t seem very popular lately.

McConnell’s tone, according to multiple sources, implied that he had been kept in the dark about the talks between some in his own ranks and Democrats. However, those same Republicans say they kept McConnell updated throughout their negotiating process.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., got so frustrated with McConnell’s presentation of events, that he called “bullshit” loud enough for the room to hear, nearly a half-dozen sources said

OK, so where did those “injuries” Zimmerman said he suffered at the hands of Trayvon Martin come from? I don’t see a mark or any blood on him. Wouldn’t the injuries he alleged have required at least a few bandages somewhere? I am just mystified.

And why, oh why, didn’t the prosecution used that tape to refute the photos showed extensively during the trial of a bloodied up Z? How did he really get those injuries?

I’ve thought all along this trial was fixed in Z’s favor. The State wants to uphold the SYG law, and what better way than to let Z off the hook?

Not to jump back on the whole RS thing again, but the hub-bub is still boiling over here in the…errr..Hub (Boston).

I am split on the issue, I think the picture portrays Jahar in a glamorous light. But on the other hand it is integral to the story. It’s probably the best piece of journalism I’ve read on the topic, period. And the picture, as I said yesterday, is intrinsically linked to the story.

I still hate the fact that his selfie is on the cover of RS. But I think I would be more OK with it if the bombings happened somewhere else in America or the world. Perhaps my proximity to the event makes me a bad judge of journalism?

Maybe I’ve watched “American History X” too many times, but is Derek Black’s life in danger now? I can’t imagine a very public renunciation of his lunatic father won’t have bad repercussions from inside the white supremacist community.

Also,

white nationalism was really about “an entrenched desire to preserve white power at the expense of others.”

BINGO. And that’s what the GOP’s blatant appeals to disgruntled whites is all about. “We’ll make sure you’re still advantaged over the blacks and hispanics. Vote for us and we might not help you, but we’ll hurt them.”

102 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 18, 2013 7:20:52am

High oil prices suck for the economy, but CNN wants us to accept the high prices because it’s propping up regimes throughout the Middle East, which uses the high prices to attempt to placate the restless masses.

OPEC, for example, could be on the losing end. And that could lead to unrest in countries around the world.

Oil producing nations in the Middle East and elsewhere have used bulging oil revenues of the last few years to placate their people. No place is this more true than Saudi Arabia, which has subsidized housing, health care, gasoline and a host of other things to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars since the Arab Spring protests began in 2010.

As a result, Saudi Arabia now needs oil prices close to $100 a barrel just to balance its budget. If oil prices fall, it may have to cut social spending. In a country that’s been a reliable oil exporter to the global market for over half a century, yet has both a restless segment clamoring for reform as well as extremists in the ranks, the repercussions could extend well beyond OPEC.

I’m getting real tired of the tired trope that stability is needed. The markets get roiled not because things are unstable, but because there’s a lack of predictability. Stability, when it means corrupt and decadent regimes decide to give a fraction of the oil wealth to stave off real change, isn’t what anyone should want.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain all tried to buy their way out of an Arab Spring uprising, which toppled autocrats from Tunisia to Egypt, and is currently roiling Syria in a civil war that threatens Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, and even Israel.

Claiming that they need the prices to stay at or above $100 indicates a need to actively manipulate the energy markets just so these countries’ leaders can stay in power. Increased energy efficiency, and decoupling from gasoline (via hybrids, more efficient industry), and alt-energy sources, could push energy prices down - putting these regimes into a bind - making promises their oil checks can’t cash.

But for Zimmerman getting out of his car (or but for him following Martin, or but for Zimmerman initiating the incident) Martin would still be alive.

Martin did nothing wrong, except for being in a place where Zimmerman thought he shouldn’t have been, and Zimmerman initiated an incident that resulted in Zimmerman shooting and killing Martin.

Add me to the list. Cortisone shot in heel yesterday for inflammation there, plus having a gout flare-up in the big toe of the same foot. Can’t wear my normal shoes, so I’m in an old worn out pair that have stretched enough that they don’t put pressure on the most sensitive spot.

So I’m catching up on work emails, arguing with a few people in Brazil via email, and doing a last minute camera hunt before I go on vacation next week. (Favoring a Canon DSLR of some sort since I have old extra lenses that (hopefully) will work with them.)

I have my father’s AE-1 sitting in a box in the closet. Along with at least two extra lenses including a good manual zoom. I presume for the auto-focus of an AOS system to work with it will require some sort of adapter. Unless you can somehow do the manual zoom on top of the system in some way.

If the old lenses really aren’t a good option then I’m wide open in terms of what system to go with. And I guess I can consider dropping down into one of the small body cameras since I don’t do a lot of “pro” shooting using tripods, odd exposures and such. I usually do point-n-shoot stuff, but want something a little more versatile, possibly capable of low-light or action shots, and definitely better zoom capability than my I-phone shots that I have been posting.

If you’ve got Canon EF lenses, they’ll work on the Canon EOS systems. They’ll get 1.6x if you’re not looking at a full frame EOS (the top of the line).

Canon R? That goes way back, and you’re probably going to need to get an appropriate adapter - but that means not having auto focus, let alone image stabilization, which is increasingly found on the Canon lenses. Don’t think there’s much of a market for those old lenses either, even though they’d have good glass.

Net indicates that the AE-1 are the FD series lenses and thus are not really compatible with the EF system Canon uses currently.

Looks like that opens up the whole can of worms.

Liz Cheney vs. Rand Paul. Which side to choose. Hmmm….

“Instead of cutting deals with the president’s allies in Congress, we can be opposing them every step of the way,” [Cheney] said, adding, “In my view, obstructing President Obama’s policies and his agenda isn’t actually obstruction; it’s patriotism.”

In an interesting twist, one Republican senator seems especially eager to defend Enzi and help him win the primary fight. It’s not his Wyoming colleague and it’s not one of members who’s served alongside Enzi for the last two decades — it’s Rand Paul.

There’s a larger significance to this that’s worth keeping in mind.

Immediately after Cheney made her intentions clear, the Kentucky Republican wasted no time in coming to Enzi’s defense, mocking Cheney and embracing the incumbent. “I’ve told him I’ll do anything I can to help him,” Paul said of Enzi. “In fact, somebody asked me today if they could use my name, and I said I’d be happy to sign on and do a fundraiser for him.”

Is there a deep affection between the two Republican colleagues? To date, Paul and Enzi haven’t seemed especially close, though some of their committee assignments overlap. But as Dave Weigel explained in a smart piece last night, the GOP primary in Wyoming is becoming a proxy war for a larger intra-party dispute.

Reporters looking for a feud between the Cheneys and her new foe Sen. Mike Enzi have come up a little short…. The real “feud” is between the ascendant America-first Republicans represented by Paul, and the conservative hawks who’ve lost their leading role in the party.

re: #225 BongCrodny

I wouldn’t be surprised if companies were reducing hours or contemplating business decisions that maximize profits at all. It’s what businesses do.

Some of these businesses may be covering for their real reason by claiming it was on Obamacare, which calculates FTEs (full time equivalents) in a way that these businesses think harm their bottom line.

After all, we’ve repeatedly seen businesses like Walmart or Darden go and chop hours so that full timers are now part time who no longer are eligible for the company’s health care benefit.

But the key thing to keep in mind is that the employer mandate (which is what all these companies are supposedly acting upon in chopping hours or cutting employees) has been unilaterally delayed 1-year by the Administration (which IMO was illegal under the law).

Oh, and here’s the kicker - the employer mandate would have affected only those businesses with 50 or more FTE employees who worked 30-40 hours. That’s a tiny fraction of all businesses in the country - the vast majority of businesses with 50+ employees already have employer health benefits, while most businesses under 50 employees are small businesses that wouldn’t be hit by the changes.

The change affects only a tiny percentage of all businesses (a donut hole if you will - a hole that wasn’t expected to result in any revenue from the employer mandate penalty).

Lewis Black: New York City is better than Texas because ‘F*ck you, Texas’

Perry may have overreached, however, said Black, when he went to New York. “But go ahead, Perry,” he growled. “Take your best shot. ‘Texas is calling?’ Well good thing I’ve got caller ID.”

“Listen, Texas,” he said, “trying to steal jobs from Illinois and California is one thing, but you’re going to try to trash-talk about New York? Not on my watch.”

Vowing to “fight fire with fire,” Black rolled his own ad, in which he said in voice-over, “This is New York City, the city that never sleeps. People come here from all over the world, for the freedom to live as they choose, for the variety of cultures, but most of all, for the fact that it’s not Texas.”

“Fuck you, Texas!” New Yorkers gleefully shout at the video’s climax, in a multitude of languages.

“‘Don’t mess with Texas?’” Black mocked. “Don’t fuck with New York.”

Boehner: Americans Want To Repeal Laws, Not Pass More Of Them

Asked about Congress’s historic lack of productivity in recent years, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Thursday that he “reject[s] the premise” of the question.

“Listen. We made clear when we took over that we weren’t going to be doing commemorative legislation on the floor, that [we’d make] a lot of changes,” he told reporters. “In addition to that, most Americans think we have too many laws. And what they want us to do is to repeal more of them.”

“We’ve got a big job to do here. We need to stay focused on those things that are most important to the American people.”

I wonder if Boehner actually believes this shit.

Colorado Town Considers Proposal To Award Bounties For Shooting Down Drones

Trustees in Deer Trail, a town of just 600, will bring up an ordinance next month that would allow residents to pay $25 for a license to shoot down “unmanned aerial vehicles” flying under 1,000 feet with a 12-gauge shotgun, according to Reuters. Anyone who could produce “either the nose or the tail” of a drone would be paid $100 under the proposal.

Wow. $100 bucks would really help in their legal fees for destruction of government property.

According to a translation by The Local, police said that they noticed that the “very large” feline was “behaving strangely” because it was furiously licking white powder residue on the floor.

Antonio Diaz, a suspected Columbian drug dealer, was arrested, and 250 grams of cocaine was reportedly seized during the raid.

We need to recolonize savage countries, subjugate their backwards peoples into “work projects,” and teach them how not to be savages.

Seriously, how is this different from Ann Coulter’s much-maligned and insane “We need to conquer their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity”?

I always wondered why DSouza’s calling Obama “Anticolonialist” was supposed to be an insult in a country that rebelled against its colonizing mother country and that supported independence and self-government across the globe. Now I understand. It’s not so much the early 20th Century these clowns miss. It’s the 19th Century.

This announcement by Eric is really terrific news. Maybe a bit of hope in a world that seems spiraling to who knows where?
Thank you Eric.
It would be great if some how, some way, that he can touch his father to further help the cause.
Now about George Zimmerman. I really think that he is going to be charged with very serious Federal Crimes in the coming months. He will be found guilty, and will rue the not guilty verdict at the state level. That whole circus would have made me wonder why the hell I ever moved to this damned state.
I don’t live there but would have thought that way.
Just had a thought, they become more rare as I age!
The best thing that George Zimmerman could do right now, is to admit to many bad things..get out from beneath his fathers’ (De Judge) shadow and grow up.
Hell, he didn’t even allow his victim to reach the age where he could have a few felonious assaults under his belt. He too, may have an awakening like Eric. Maybe he will apologize to Trayvon’s loved ones, and ask for forgiveness.
Florida is going to start changing for the better, if it hasn’t already. Texas is not too far from a turning,
Arizona too. Here in Virginia..well I hope we have Cuccinelli (like Eddie cucha catcha camma toe-sa nara toe-sa nocka samma camma wacky Brown drown) politically anyway, in his own foul way.

re: #215 Joanne

The odd thing about this is that it’s true (what the guy said on HLN, which I don’t get in my cable package). I remember reading about it on Twitter and thinking, yeah, this guy is so in the know as the jury is sequestered and there wasn’t a verdict. And looking at his words in hindsight does give one pause.

I don’t like jumping on conspiracies like this. If it ends up being true verification will come from official sources. It’s way to easy to give in to motivated thinking and speculate.

Even though I would love to see Fox news and the RWNJ blogosphere take it on the chin, my skeptical bones are telling me to ignore my bias until more info comes out.

What you mean they’re not treating them like heroes? What a bunch of tyrants. Seriously, Snowden knew what the hell he was getting into when he went to work for the NSA. This whole thing is a load of crap and it’s even more obnoxious that his supporters are trying to put him on the same pedestal as say MLK.

374 HappyWarrior  Thu, Jul 18, 2013 11:07:16am

What do GG and the others realistically expect the administration to do? Just condone leaks? That would est up a terrible precedent that no sitting president wants to set and with all due respect to Jimmy Carter, he knows damn well that his administration would have a had a problem had a national security secret been leaked during his presidency.

These leaks seem to have gone beyond disclosing information that reveals criminal activitiy, they seem to also compromise other aspects of national security.

That is where I start to have problems with GG and ES and all their admirers.

And they don’t see why that’s a problem. I mean if the whole idea of nations having national security offends them. Tough shit, it’s part of what being a modern nation state entails. Every nation big and small has national security concerns and secrets. For GG and ES and their supporters to act like the US is bad for having them shows how unbelievably naive they are.

He’s a fairly young guy. He’ll be out before he’s 50. Considering the stuff that he released resulted in American deaths, he’s lucky it wasn’t longer.

Yeah I don’t know either. I’ll tell you what. The thing that showed me Ron Paul was nuts in 2008 was when he started talking about how he’d get rid of the FBI and CIA. Not limiting their powers and budget but outright eliminating them which would be so stupid with all the threats this country faces.

A predator drone has a flight ceiling of 25,000 feet and cruises at about 80 mph. Enjoy trying to shoot it down with hand held weapon.

Fucking dumbasses.

Pikers doesn’t even begin to cover it. The NRO operate actual satellites that orbit the planet (and they provide their intel to the other alphabet agencies - CIA, NSA, DIA, and DOD). We’re talking geostationary (22,000+ miles above earth) to lower earth orbit - all of which is out of the reach of anything but anti-satellite missiles that are in the hands of but a few countries.

re: #380 Gus

20 years might as well be life. You get out two decades later, broke or almost broke with no job, no prospects, decades behind on education or skill training, no social contacts aside from family (and in a lot of cases not even that), missing two decades of retirement planning/contribution. A host of other detriments, and that’s even before you get to the whole “I am a convicted felon” that you have to put on all future job applications when they ask for criminal history.

Technically you’re still alive. You’re never going to be able to do more than live in a box and eat mud — likely a worse life than you were living in prison — but hey, at least you didn’t die in there right?
