Bon Iver: Towers

When the onus is not all your own
Music • Views: 23,197

For the love, Iʼd fallen on
in the swampy August dawn
what a mischief you would bring young darling!
when the onus is not all your own
when you’re up for it before you’ve grown

From the faun forever gone
in the towers of your honeycomb
I’d a tore your hair out just to climb back darling
when you’re filling out your only form
can you tell that itʼs just ceremon’
now you’ve added up to what you’re from

Build your tether rain-out from your fragments…
break the sailor’s table on your sacrum…
fuck the fiercest fables, I’m with Hagen

For the love, comes the burning young
from the liver, sweating through your tongue
well, youʼre standing on my sternum don’t you climb down darling
oh the sermons are the first to rest
smoke on Sundays when youʼre drunk and dressed
out the hollows where the swallow nests

Satanists Turned the Founder of the Westboro Baptist Church’s Dead Mom Gay

The Satanic Temple, a burgeoning community of worship devoted to the Dark Lord, has performed a “Pink Mass” over the grave of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps Jr.’s mother. The Pink Mass is a Satanic ritual performed after death that turns the deceased’s straight spirit into a homo one—it’s not unlike the Mormon practice of baptizing the dead, only much gayer.

On Sunday the Satanic Temple, which first came into the national spotlight last January when the organization announced its support for Florida Governor Rick Scott, went to the Phelps family graveyard in Mississippi to perform the ritual. (Two Pink Masses were performed, one with a female couple and another with men.) I contacted Lucien Greaves, the Temple’s spokesperson and officiator of the ceremony, to find out what exactly the Pink Mass entials. While he didn’t get into specifics, he told told me via email that “there were, in fact, scriptures recited, candles lit, and a ceremonial proceeding that we may eventually post the details of at our website, westboro-baptist.com. That is, if the Pink Mass generates sufficient interest to the point that other responsible parties, respectful of the graveyard, wish to perform their own.”

That’s the way to get the WBC’s knickers in a twist. ;-)

To be fair the GBR is a national treasure with massive cultural, historical and environmental significance. Certain islander religions and spirituality are heavily influenced by the species in the reef and like the article says, it is a World Heritage site. If Canada dropped some UXO on Yellowstone I’d expect there to be some discussion about it in the papers.

Justin Vernon grew up close to me and went to the same High School. I believe his mom was a teacher. I might be wrong.

From what I’ve learned he was big into the jazz program. Some other ‘kids’ that came outta that same school/program. Geoffrey Keezer, Noel Kupersmith, and Fred Spitz. Those are just the few I knew. There are many more. The University also has a great jazz & music program.

This is one of the many reasons why I was totally blindsided by the local right-wing hate for public education and teachers that spewed forth when Walker and the WisGoP laid out Act 10.

Surreal.

I missed this next story when in came out, but ten days ago Japan lost a true hero:

Masao Yoshida, the man in charge of Japan’s stricken nuclear plant in the wake of the catastrophic March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, has died of cancer in a Tokyo hospital aged 58.

Yoshida led the “Fukushima 50,” the group of men who risked their lives to contain the fallout from the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, which affects the throat, in late 2011 months after the tsunami struck, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), the operator of the nuclear facility, said.

The company added it was unlikely his cancer was a result of radiation exposure. They said that the condition usually takes five to 10 years to develop if radiation is to blame.

“Mr. Yoshida united staff and courageously handled the accident,” said Naomi Hirose, TEPCO’s chief executive.

Yoshida was at the Fukushima nuclear complex when the tsunami engulfed the cooling system and saw three reactors go into meltdown. In an interview in November 2011, he said he thought several times that he would die.

Defying orders from his bosses, Yoshida made the decision to pump seawater into the No. 1 reactor in a move that may have averted a catastrophic nuclear explosion.

In that Cass Sunstein article he makes his first error in simply accepting the term “STEM”. This is a phrase used by part of the liberal arts intelligentsia (and it should be noted that Sunstein is a famous lawyer turned policy wonk for politicians) but that term cannot accurately describe the diversity of work done in the rather widely disparate fields of sciences and engineering. The “T” is for “technology” but that can include anything from your local cable TV installer to the poor slob who gets to collect urine samples at your local jail.

I look at that Sunstein piece as an example (yet one more) of trying to create an issue that then the “experts” (Sunstein et. al.) can come in and for the right price attempt to solve.

Yeah, personally I see STEM being used by people in STEM fields themselves more than anything. Usually during wonderful discussions about how non-STEM people are a cancerous blight on the planet dragging everyone else down, but as with everything I know that’s only the most obnoxious of the group doing that.

In policy discussions, yes, the term is thrown around in fora when heads of organizations get together. But it is not an organic (i.e., arising from the work of scientists themselves) term, but one imposed by those who want to have grand economic and educational policies.

Back when I went to school, “science” was lumped with “humanities”, and “engineering” was considered separate from the previous. The heart of this is understanding the goals of the individuals involved. Physics was with Math was with Philosophy was with English, and so on, because the end product of these academics were the same - to push human knowledge forward.

Engineering (and in a similar sense Agriculture and Business) were separate schools because their goal was to train individuals to pursue careers for employment in American business endeavors.

Today, “technology” is a magic word, and that the acronym is “STEM” is too broad to meaningfully address the different issues addressed by individuals. E.g., the woman getting a PhD in ecology and evolution faces quite a different career path than someone being trained to do networking a la MCSE, both of whom are different in career prospects than someone in a BSEE program while also in also ROTC who’ll spend the next 20 years spending money in the DoD.

Yet all will be lumped under “STEM”.

Perhaps that’s the reason MST3K got cancelled, because if they’d kept them on the air, it would have had people asking why they weren’t riffing the movies the network was paying to make.

I agree, a million times. In my case, I earned no pension in private industry, not even making a halfway decent income until my early 50s (which was snatched away after 5 yrs—long story of ambition, lack of ethics and greed but not on my part). Any small amts of 401ks (under $2K, all 3 of them at diff jobs) were needed to be cashed in to pay the mortgage in times of economic stress. I’m not atypical, either, for the lower paid single mother who will eventually be forced to live solely on her own SS. If I didn’t have my g-son and his child w/me, it would be a pretty empty existence, more than just financially.

My dog will eat just about anything, and if he sees me eating something he becomes quite interested and will sit down near me “at attention”, watching every bite. “Look at what a great dog I am. We got some sweet loot from those examples of my unflagging bravery. Yeah, I’ve got your back, so you should really give me a bit of whatever it is you’re eating.”

So I offer him a small wedge of the orange I’m eating. He eagerly comes up and takes two sniffs, but then backs away, looking confused and a bit hurt. “Aw, HELL no, man! Why would you think I would eat that sort of thing? I thought we were friends.” Then he goes and sulks in the corner, refusing to make eye contact because I offered him a bit of orange.

I think most dogs would not voluntarily bite Geraldo’s wang, despite its probable resemblance to a rawhide bone.

Good Morning Lizards..So nice to see my Jemele Hill again on ESPN The Sports Reporters..She has really become a Star on ESPN over the last few years. She is a sharp writer, good looking, personable, young African-American Lady on her way up.
She has really impressed me with her talent and I emailed her the first day when she got hired by ESPN…We have a casual email thread over the years and I really like her personality.. She even flirted with me once as we just joked about something. A good Person..
Earlier this year she had the Gall to speak about race issues and Black men in sports once she was attacked by the Brietbarts and Drudge readers. The Bigots from those Political sites came out with the long knives calling her names and saying she was a monkey and things unprintable..She had to face this attack publicly on ESPN and I know..I know she was hurt deeply..I don’t think she had any idea how hateful the new political right had become..She is a sports writer..
So as I watched her on ESPN this morning with such grace knocking it out of the park I thought this..

There is no other reason..It’s not the Travon Martin case or Race issues any other thing in the News..
I Hate you fucking Brietbart Readers and Drudge people and the rest of your ilk.. I Fucking hate you..Everything you are.Everything you stand for..I hate you..
And I don’t give a shit about how you spin it.

Yeah, read the comments on that op/ed. Jesus, people are dumb and mean.

My husband’s new employer doesn’t pay a penny for the family’s health insurance. They pay for most of his, but to get me on the policy it quadruples, to put our son on it, it goes up EIGHT times, to almost 800 a month. I don’t blame the ACA for that, I blame greedy executives. So, we had limited options. We put me on the husband’s plan and sought out separate healthcare and a dental plan for our son. I have no idea if the plan we picked for him will be worth a shit until something happens. And of course GA’s governor won’t green light a state run exchange, so I have no clue what, if anything will be available to us and what it will cost after the beginning of next year. There’s also no dental or vision care in the ACA that I’m aware of, which is another problem. Dental insurance is a joke, our plans cover a max of 1000 dollars a year. That’s it. One root canal or a broken tooth or a couple of fillings and that’s the end of your coverage till the next year. Why aren’t medical and dental linked? Dental health is part of your overall health, it’s such bullshit it’s separate.

Fucking insurance companies are not our friends.

Yes, that’s exactly what those people are: fascists at heart. They don’t even pretend they’re not anymore; hell, they no longer even deny they’re being manipulated by their masters. They simply don’t believe in real democracy in any form, in spite of their rhetoric to the contrary about the Constitution which they twist for their own purposes, just as they do the bible.

Yes, Medicare doesn’t cover dental or eyecare, either, unless you can cook up a “real” medical reason. At least if we had universal health care, it might free up a bit of cash to take care of those things, but why not treat them as Medicaid does? As a result of not having that cash, my old fillings are falling out and I’m losing teeth in my old age, even though I’ve taken care of them for many years and seeing a dentist regularly, but thankfully, I no longer need glasses of any kind (it’s a miracle, I tell ya!). No, it’s actually a condition called in lay terms, “second sight” which could be a precursor to cataracts (no sign yet, though).

Why McDonald’s Employee Budget Has Everyone Up In Arms

“…in doing so, the company may have inadvertently done something else: Shown that it’s nearly impossible to make a living off the minimum wage.
……………..
Take a look at the sample budget, provided in a Web site that McDonald’s created in conjunction with Visa. Here are some of the main criticisms of it:
- It assumes the worker is working two jobs.
- It surmises that health insurance costs $20 a month.
- It doesn’t include child care, groceries, clothing or gas for the worker’s car.
- Also, another, possibly earlier, version of the budget (seen here) proposed that heating would cost $0 a month.

The inflated aluminum pricing is just one way that Wall Street is flexing its financial muscle and capitalizing on loosened federal regulations to sway a variety of commodities markets, according to financial records, regulatory documents and interviews with people involved in the activities.

The maneuvering in markets for oil, wheat, cotton, coffee and more have brought billions in profits to investment banks like Goldman, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley, while forcing consumers to pay more every time they fill up a gas tank, flick on a light switch, open a beer or buy a cellphone. In the last year, federal authorities have accused three banks, including JPMorgan, of rigging electricity prices, and last week JPMorgan was trying to reach a settlement that could cost it $500 million.

Someone needs to be prosecuted for fraud.

The Warehouse Dance

On the warehouse floor, the arrangement makes for a peculiar workday, employees say.

Despite the persistent backlogs, many Metro warehouses operate only one shift and usually sit idle 12 or more hours a day. In a town like Detroit, where factories routinely operate round the clock when necessary, warehouse workers say that low-key pace is uncommon.

When they do work, forklift drivers say, there is much more urgency moving aluminum into, and among, the warehouses than shipping it out. Mr. Clay, the forklift driver, who worked at the Mount Clemens warehouse until February, said that while aluminum was delivered in huge loads by rail car, it left in a relative trickle by truck.

“They’d keep loading up the warehouses and every now and then, when one was totally full they’d shut it down and send the drivers over here to try and fill another one up,” said Mr. Clay, 23.

What happened was that a plane on a training flight had a fuel emergency (usually this means a part of the fuel system has malfunctioned) and needed to jettison its practice bombs at once. While unpleasant, that’s not a major fuck up if no person dies and it should not be a career ender for the pilot.

The Navy has historically provided compensation in cases like that and should do so now.

re: #181 Dark_Falcon

What happened was that a plane on a training flight had a fuel emergency (usually this means a part of the fuel system has malfunctioned) and needed to jettison its practice bombs at once. While unpleasant, that’s not a major fuck up if no person dies and it should not be a career ender for the pilot.

The Navy has historically provided compensation in cases like that and should do so now.

Here’s an idea…

Option A: emergency jettison of practice bombs over said area.

Option B: do not jettison bombs and let aircraft crash into said area also requiring a rescue operation.

It’s different because:

A. Because David Barton is a Faithful Christian, not a Satanic Muslim.

B. Because David Barton is using faith to defend Real America from Godless Obamunism.

C. Because “Shut Up, You Liberal Heathen!”

A couple of years ago the Navy fucked up another super-special coral reef near the Phillipines by a minesweeper running aground on it; we had to take the entire ship apart and remove it in pieces…

We can’t keep doing these things and think nobody will notice, or that just writing a check will take care of it. Even a big check.

We can’t keep doing things like this and think nobody will mind.

Each Harrier jet dropped two 227-kilo bombs: one BDU 45 and one High Explosive GBU 12. The BDU 45s are inert and the GBU 12s were unarmed when released, so none exploded.

The extent of damage to the reef or other marine life is unclear.

This is really sad. Although it’s classic case for birth control education, and for kids staying in school, it’s also one for education in general and for public support of the safety net. But it’s Missouri, folks. You can really tell those kids are loved, though. My heart goes out to this young mother, totally. I can even understand how she might have thought the next man was going to be “the one” who would care enough to stick around and help make life easier for them. Just when you think you have it tough, you see these kinds of stories. And more people are telling them.

Just how big is the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park?

- bigger than the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Holland combined
- roughly the same area as Japan, Germany, Malaysia or Italy
- approximately half the size of Texas
- slightly smaller than the entire Baltic Sea.

It’s not “no one will mind”, its that these things will happen from time to time.

Aircraft have to fly to train pilots, and on rare occasions those aircraft have problems in flight. When that happens the aircraft sometimes needs to jettison its bombs and if its not over a populated area it will do so at once. To do otherwise is to put both the plane and the pilot at risk. And wonderful as it is, a section of coral reef is not a person, and a fighter pilot is.

The USS Port Royal ran aground on a coral reef right off shore of Oahu in 2009.

The ship’s commanding officer, John Carroll, was relieved of duty and disciplined. Three other officers and one enlisted sailor were also disciplined. The United States Navy reattached 5,400 coral colonies in an attempt to repair damage to the reef.

I didn’t even read the comments; I just felt total empathy for her situation because I’ve sort of been there, with 2 kids, not as bad off certainly, but it was tough as hell. I had to pay a young woman to come in to keep my kids for $20/wk (the going rate then, but I also gave her bus fare and fed her, of course), while her mother and sister kept her 2 while she was at my apt, a situation that just didn’t seem right. That was in 1963 when I was making about $65/wk as a secy, and there were no programs, no food stamps (The Food Stamp Act was legislated in 1964), Medicaid, or anything else, no day care near me (I rode the bus, too, no car). I felt bad enough that she was working for so little, and my little pay check was trying to support the 2 of us and our kids. I wasn’t getting any child support at the time since I had left CA (revenge on his part), but my aunt and grandmother did help when they could until I could get settled back in NC. Is it any wonder that I became a left-leaning feminist?

I would expect the same damage as dropping four lengths of sewer pipe. Recovering them might do more damage, but you have to get the ones that don’t have inert filler.
