So, their cleverness is a disguise for incompetence? Or is it that their incompetence merely masks their cleverness? Or is it possibly both at once? I wouldn’t put it past them you know….

“The story goes that Norman Rockwell, seeking authenticity, wanted to rip holes in the soldiers’s shirt. The GI said fine. Rockwell asked to smear mud on his face and hands. Not a problem.

But when the artist asked to rub dirt on his machine gun, the soldier refused: No proper gunner could tolerate that. So Rockwell portrayed the GI as tattered and begrimed, but with his big gray Browning machine gun sleek and clean.”

Details

On 12 January 1968, four North Vietnamese Air Force AN-2 Colt biplanes lifted off from an airfield in northeastern North Vietnam and headed west toward Laos. The aircraft were on a mission to destroy a US radar base that was guiding bombers in attacks against targets in North Vietnam. Known to the Americans as Site 85, the radar facility was perched atop a 5,800-foothigh mountain, Phou Pha Thi. Manned by US Air Force volunteers “sheepdipped” as employees of the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, the site had been in operation only a few months. The mountain, used for many years as a staging base for CIA-directed Hmong guerilla fighters and American special operations and rescue helicopters, was only 125 nautical miles from Hanoi. Air America, a CIA-proprietary, provided aerial support for the facility, the technicians, and the security forces.

The Colts reached Site 85 early in the afternoon, and two began bombing and strafing passes as the others circled nearby. Coincidentally, Air America captain Ted Moore, flying a UH-1D Huey helicopter carrying ammunition to the site, saw the attack (“It looked like World War I,” he recalled.) and gave chase to a Colt as it turned back to the Vietnamese border. Moore positioned his helicopter above the biplane, as crewman Glenn Woods fired an AK-47 rifle down on it. The pursuit continued for more than 20 minutes until the second AN-2 flew underneath the helicopter. Dropping back, Moore and Woods watched as the first AN-2 dropped and crashed into a ridge just west of the North Vietnamese border. Minutes later, the second Colt hit the side of a mountain three miles farther north. The other Colts escaped, inactive observers throughout. Within hours a CIA-controlled ground team reached the crashed aircraft and found bullet holes in the downed planes.

In the mists of the Annamite Mountains and part of a secret war, Air America employees Ted Moore and Glenn Woods gained the distinction of having shot down a fixed-wing aircraft from a helicopter, a singular aerial victory in the Vietnam War. Two months later, North Vietnamese commandos attacked and destroyed Site 85, inflicting the deadliest single ground loss of US Air Force personnel of the Vietnam War.

On 27 July 2007, CIA officially received An Air Combat First in an event attended by members of the Air America Board; pilot Ted Moore; Sawang Reed, the wife of flight mechanic Glenn Woods; CIA paramilitary legend Bill Lair; and the donors of the painting, former Air America officers Marius Burke and Boyd D. Mesecher.

I think the Bren was also a shade lighter. And had a quick barrel change capacity as well. The British definitely integrated it well into their infantry formations since each soldier in a squad carried two magazines for it and were also trained to be able to fire it if necessary.

Doing a little reading, the AN-2 is a pretty freaking amazing plane.

A note from the pilot’s handbook reads: “If the engine quits in instrument conditions or at night, the pilot should pull the control column full aft and keep the wings level. The leading-edge slats will snap out at about 64 km/h (40 mph), and when the airplane slows to a forward speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph), the airplane will sink at about a parachute descent rate until the aircraft hits the ground.” [1] Wikipedia

pretty much anything that could be simplified or made foolproof was done on it.

From memory so the usual caveats apply…

In WWI the Brits had both the Lewis and the Vickers - a light and a (so-called) medium machine gun. In the interwar period the powers that be decided they wanted a single weapon that would fulfill both roles. The Bren is the weapon they selected.

From what I recall reading the Bren did well enough for replacing the Lewis, but there were things the Vickers did at the heavier end the Bren just didn’t meet. And of course WWII upset the whole plan leaving all three systems in play (plus more later). But that was the basic plan.

it wasn’t only in the British Empire that the Lewis saw service in WWII. USN small craft still used the Lewis gun during the Guadalcanal campaign. By 1943, however, the Lewis gun’s time in combat had ended.

And let us not forget the the stupidity of the M1903’s original cruciform bayonet. That FAIL was only prevented from becoming EPIC because Teddy Roosevelt used the normal sword bayonet attached to a Krag to test the stupid thing. When his strike broke the bayonet Ordinance wanted in two, he made them adopt a conventional bayonet instead.

On the other hand, Gen Crozier was directly responsible for approving the M1903 rifle, the M1911 pistol, the BAR (M1918), and the M1917 machine gun. More critically he was key in convincing the powers that be that the US military needed to upgrade those (and other) weapons.

And it’s arguable that he had an indirect but critical influence on the effectiveness of systems developed in WWII. He’s the person who got the GANTT charts used by the US arsenals. No, Dark. You did not address that. The British did not say around 1918, “Oh, we need a more accurate machine gun with a box magazine, so let’s have some trials.” The accuracy and box were reasons they selected the weapon over such alternatives as the BAR but it’s not why they went looking in the first place.

When I was a kid, one of our dogs ate the neighbor’s goat. To be more precise… he ate half the goat. And left the other half on their front lawn. This was the neighbor girl’s 4H prize-winning, super-special goat, that she’d become so attached she didn’t sell it at the fair like the rest of the 4H’s did with their goats… neighbor girl and her father were of course very upset.

The next day our dog was gone. Dad told us he’d given it to the Army, and it was going to Vietnam to be a soldier dog. In hindsight… I think my father might have lied to us.

(another of our dogs chased goat-girl’s brother up a tree. And yet another killed and ate two of another neighbor’s chickens. I swear we fed the dogs, every day. Kibble and canned. None of them ever frightened me, at all, they were sweet and cuddly and very tolerant german shepherds who didn’t even mind when I’d ride them like ponies. But now I think about it, I’m starting to get suspicious that it wasn’t really a coyote that killed my miniature poodle.)

ETA: I bring this up here and now, because the dog’s name was Thor. So it’s not a total non sequitur.

Fischer’s tweet represents the type of simplistic black and white thinking one sees so much of in the TP. Fischer’s “logic”: if something doesn’t rank at the top of a Gallup poll, that means Congress should ignore it. Makes perfect sense, if you don’t think about it.

I doubt if he would apply such a standard to any federal legislation (or Constitutional amendment) banning same sex marriage or abortion or pot or anything else he doesn’t like. Most of those issues aren’t near the top of that poll either.

Fact is, most Americans support some kind of immigration reform. And Congress has to deal with issues each day that don’t make the top of a Gallup poll.

The 1903 was championed by the President and was a Mauser in all but name and a few changes for the worse (The M1917 was an even better rifle and should have replaced the 1903 after the war) & the failure of the .30-06 version of the Chauchat (the original was actually a reasonable weapon but the US failed to understand critical differences between rimmed and rimless cartridge shapes…) made the 1917 so critically necessary that had little choice but to adopt it. I can grant the 1911. “Hatcher’s Notebook” by Marion Hatchet has good info on many of the problems of early MG’s and the US Army.

I had not heard about the GANTT charts before (or had forgotten if I did). That was probably a very good thing that kept the nightmare of WWI arms production from being even worse than it was.

The lives Snowden & his cohorts have put at risk is criminal. The FSB would like nothing better than to know how Britain’s security forces work, just as they do those of the US. The reasons for the theft from the NSA go far deeper than the purported “privacy issues” Greensnow & Co are claiming to be so concerned about.

In response to The Guardian story linked below.

Hague: No evidence of communication breaches

itv.com

“Foreign Secretary William Hague has insisted that he has seen no evidence of breaches in the UK’s protection of individuals’ communications, following reports that British spies are able to look at texts.

“The allegations, resulting from the latest leaks by whistleblower Edward Snowden, suggest a secret database created by the US National Security Agency collects nearly 200 million texts every day from around the world. “

NSA collects millions of text messages daily in ‘untargeted’ global sweep

theguardian.com

“It is a longstanding policy that we do not comment on intelligence matters,” he said. “Furthermore, all of GCHQ’s work is carried out in accordance with a strict legal and policy framework which ensures that our activities are authorised, necessary and proportionate, and that there is rigorous oversight, including from the Secretary of State, the Interception and Intelligence Services Commissioners and the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee.”

“GCHQ also directed the Guardian towards a statement made to the House of Commons in June 2013 by foreign secretary William Hague, in response to revelations of the agency’s use of the Prism program.

“Any data obtained by us from the US involving UK nationals is subject to proper UK statutory controls and safeguards, including the relevant sections of the Intelligence Services Act, the Human Rights Act and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act,” Hague told MPs.”

Whatever he does won’t be enough for Greensnow & Co. You just know it.

Exclusive: Obama to announce overhaul to controversial NSA program

reuters.com

“In an 11 a.m. (1600 GMT) speech at the Justice Department, Obama will say he is ordering a transition that will significantly change the handling of what is known as the telephone “metadata” program from the way the NSA currently handles it.

(snip)

“In a nod to privacy advocates, Obama will say he has decided that the government should not hold the bulk telephone metadata, a decision that could frustrate some intelligence officials.

(snip)

“Obama has asked Attorney General Eric Holder and the intelligence community to report back to him before the program comes up for reauthorization on March 28 on how to preserve the necessary capabilities of the program, without the government holding the metadata.”

Ratings Plummet For ‘Duck Dynasty’ Season Premiere After Star’s Gay-Bashing Interview

As it turns out, a national controversy sparked by racist and homophobic remarks doesn’t necessarily result in a ratings boost for a television show. Who knew?

Many speculated that “Duck Dynasty,” A&E’s hit reality series about a family of swamp millionaires who made their fortune off duck calls, would draw even more viewers after one of the show’s stars, Phil Robertson, made headlines last month for railing against “homosexual offenders,” “Shintos” and “Islamists” in a wild interview with GQ.

But rather than a ratings spike, viewership for the show’s season five premiere actually dipped considerably. Wednesday’s premiere drew 8.5 million viewers, down 28 percent from the season four premiere last August.

“There is no indication that the United States has sought to take vengeance on Snowden, who is living in an undisclosed location in Russia without visible security measures, according to a recent Washington Post interview. And the intelligence operators who spoke to BuzzFeed on the condition of anonymity did not say they expected anyone to act on their desire for revenge. But their mood is widespread, people who regularly work with the intelligence community said.”

2.6 on the 20th anniversary of Northridge

128 geoffm33  Fri, Jan 17, 2014 6:03:48am

Long story…

Interesting night last night. 2:30 AM the house alarm starts going off. I run downstairs in boxer shorts and my home security device (15” mag light, doesn’t work a lick, but would hurt like hell). Check the whole house before trying to turn off the alarm.

Enter my work security code and it stops the alarm for a brief second and the phone rings (it’s ADT). My code gets rejected and alarm starts blaring again cutting out the phone and hanging up on ADT. Get the right code in and the alarm goes off.

Security panel indicates that the break glass alarm in the basement triggered it. I go back down (I already checked the windows down there) to investigate. I find shards of brown glass and the distinct smell of beer!

I (as a homebrewer) had two cases of beer bottle conditioning (aka carbonating) and 8 of them exploded into thousands of pieces. This can happen with degraded bottles, over carbonation or an infection.

I start cleaning up and the phone rings, it’s my father in law. He’s the backup when ADT can’t get a hold of me. Told him everything is fine and we laugh about it. Then I realize that the police are on there way since ADT couldn’t reach me.

Get dressed in a hurry and the door bell rings. Officers were great for 3am and they laughed a little at my story. Took me about an hour to clean up and put the rest of the unexploded bottles into a cooler with the lid shut just in case.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Greenwald’s dudebros and the master Dude himself are busy crowing about how the President has bowed to their collective will and is moving to eliminate collecting metadata.

Ummm… okay.

Sounds great in theory, up until the next terror attack is shown to be preventable had the NSA been able to use its metadata collection techniques to connect the dots (the reason that the NSA was involved in this in the first place).

Then, there’s hysteria about how the NSA is collecting hundreds of millions of text messages worldwide daily.

Note that word - worldwide. Not US citizens. Worldwide. They’re targeting people who aren’t Americans. Overseas. In other words, nothing illegal about any of this. Moreover, in the context of the British spying on their own using NSA data, they’re required to obtain warrants to access the information.

Meanwhile, it looks like it was Russian hackers who were behind the Target data breach, and they managed to penetrate Target computer systems and then placed the malicious code on the POS machines throughout the company’s stores and then were able to recover the customer data (CC/DC, PINs, etc.) at their leisure.

Subpoenas have been issued in the #GWBVendetta and they include key officials at the Port Authority and within the Christie Administration.

Among those issued subpoenas, according to a source: Christie’s former Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly and his former campaign manager Bill Stepien, as well as spokesman Michael Drewniak, Director of Communications Maria Comella, chief counsel Charles McKenna, Chief of Staff Kevin O’Dowd and director of the authorities unit Regina Egea. Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye, a New York appointee, was also issued a subpoena along with several other agency officials. The governor was not on the list of 17 individuals and three organizations.

According to legislative officials, the full list wont be known and publicly revealed until all the subpoenas are delivered.

Romneyworld buzzes over Chris Christie troubles

“Rom-denfreude (noun) — The pleasure Mitt Romney loyalists are taking in the struggles of Chris Christie.

“The condition is prevalent, stemming from a range of perceived Christie slights towards Romney during the 2012 campaign, which several Romney loyalists ticked off quickly — and with still-evident bitterness.

“There was the New Jersey governor’s barring Romney from raising money in the Garden State, his unwillingness to answer vice presidential vetting questions and his highly autobiographical convention keynote speech. Most of all, though, Romney allies remain resentful of Christie’s embrace of President Barack Obama as the two worked together on Superstorm Sandy relief in the waning days of the campaign, which Romney backers believe boosted Obama’s bipartisan bona fides and cost Romney valuable swing votes.”

Mitt’s a dick, and that recent story (if true) about him going all frat boy when it comes to overweight people makes me really glad we didn’t get stuck with him for four years.

Not Presidential material.

Apple’s Latest Foray Into China Gets a Weak Response

nytimes.com

“Analysts said that Apple could probably broaden its potential market in China by making phones with features that appeal more to Chinese consumers, like bigger screens. Handsets like the Samsung Note 3, which has a 5.7-inch screen, compared with the 4-inch screen of the Apple 5S and 5C, have been selling well in China.

“In his appearance at the China Mobile store in Beijing, the Apple chief told shoppers and reporters that “today is just the beginning of China Mobile and Apple coming together to deliver the best experience in the world.”

“We never talk about future things,” Mr. Cook said. “We have great things we are working on but we want to keep them secret. That way you will be so much happier when you see it.”

WTF? “We never talk about future things”? Obviously, Cook has never experienced anticipation? That’s a great deal of the fun.

Cook juts does not have the crowd handling skills that Jobs did. What kind of lame statement is this: “We never talk about future things.”?

Chinese who want the panache of iPhone will shell out the money to buy one. But Samsung runs a close second in the panache department., and their phones are damned good It’s like the Buick to Apple’s Cadillac. XiaoMi, a Chinese Android phone maker, is gaining ground against Samsung and Apple by offering something almost as good for about US$200 — or less. Maybe it’s the Oldsmobile. (Yeah, I know GM doesn’t make them anymore, but you get my drift.)

Cook needs to offer the audience something more than vague promises of cool stuff that will make you “so much happier.”

[To be fair, I own a XiaoMi 1s. It’s not bad, but the second generation handset is better.]

It’s going to be a race to the prosecutors to see who’s going to spill the beans first - and for what in exchange.

Wildstein’s going to have the early lead since he was the first to be called before the Assembly Committee investigating the whole matter.

Kelly’s got to appear, as should Baroni and Samson.

That sound you hear is the sound of the 5th being taken by all of the above. And that next sound is the sound of their lawyers working with prosecutors/investigators on cutting deals.

I think Bridget Kelly should get immunity first. Fuck Wildstein.

The smart move would be to secure immunity for testifying and then sell exclusive rights to the story to a tabloid since you’ll need a little extra cash as you start another career in a different social circle.

Most people watching Duck Dynasty watch it for escapist entertainment. As derpy as it sounds, it’s pretty much the plan. I speak from experience as a person working in IT.

A decade ago, they outsourced a lot of our work to China and India (and in some cases Russia, though it was less popular). Then they got back a bunch of barely-passable code and realized how much of a pain in the ass it is to have to deal with people halfway around the world. So the current trend is to bring a WHOLE bunch of H1B visas from India to here instead.

That the employee’s continued ability to remain in the country is one more bargaining chip that the company holds against them is, of course, no coincidence.

Hey, of course a quick google and up it pops. Many may have already seen it, but just in case. Notice they built up the noise level of the instruments to have the texture of the original photo and manipulated the curves and contrast to fit a newsprint image. Good stuff.

I agree. I am saying it could all be under the table. It is NJ politics, and if it is worth the money for his supporters, it shall be done. And yes, it is all speculation and it also takes into account that I do not think she was totally responsible and did it for him. TV viewers, for the most part, just want to be entertained. The Duck Dynasty demographic may be sympathetic to Robertson’s opinions, but I suspect they’d rather he keep them to himself.

Notice, for example, that the Duggars, who are quite likely part of the Quiverfull movement, never say anything specific about it on TV. They’re Christians, sure, but careful not to associate themselves with Quiverfull, or bring it up, because it would probably cost them viewers.

Quick reality check… Numbers based on 2010 census and rounded off.

Demographics California

White* 23 Million, 62%
White, Not Hispanic 16 Million, 42%
Hispanic Latino, Any Race 14 million, 37%
Asian 6 Million, 15%
Black 3 Million, 7%

*”White” as defined by Census Agency.

White Americans are people of the United States who are considered or consider themselves White. The United States Census Bureau defines White people as those “having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who indicated their race(s) as “White” or reported entries such as Irish, German, Italian, Lebanese, Arab, Moroccan, or Caucasian.”[4] Like all official U.S. racial categories, “White” has a “Not Hispanic or Latino” and a “Hispanic or Latino” component,[5] the latter consisting mostly of White Mexican Americans and white Cuban Americans. The term “Caucasian” is often used interchangeably with “White”, although the terms are not synonymous.[6][7] Wikipedia

The way I read it, what they are concerned is that the number of “WHITE LIKE ME” whites are going to become a minority. If you break it out as White / non-Hispanic - Hispanic - Asian - Blacks - Others California is a Majority Minority state already, since there is no one group that composes 50% of the population.

That the employee’s continued ability to remain in the country is one more bargaining chip that the company holds against them is, of course, no coincidence.

Contracting firms around DC were doing that back in the late 80s and early 90s when I worked there. A few firms were populated with IT personnel from India on H1B visas and they heavily undercut the other local IT contractors since they could pay less and have programmers and analysts with BS and even MS IT degrees from universities in India.

The other firms fought back in two ways:
1. They started hiring BS degree IT folk instead of mainly using Associate Degree programmers. (Which got me my job there - they hired a lot of eastern OH and western PA college grads looking for entry level IT jobs.)
2. They started radically lying on the resumes they submitted for getting contracts. I saw the one they were using for me once - it listed me as having an MS degree in CmpSci and three more years of experience than I actually had.*

I was out of that firm and back in western PA less than six months after I saw that resume. It was obvious to me that it was not a firm to work for.

* - The only reason I saw it was that they had doctored one of the other analyst’s resume in a way similar to mine and pushed back his attendance at Marshall University by 3-4 years. Which just so happened to then overlap with when one of the government managers actually was attending Marshall. So he asked the analyst about who he knew in school and it quickly became clear that the resume and reality were not in agreement. So the contract account manager(s) arranged for us to see our resumes so that we would know what to lie about if we were asked questions.
