GOP Rebranding Watch: S. Dakota Lawmaker Says It Should Be Legal to Deny Service to “Blacks”

Evangelical bigotry
Wingnuts • Views: 19,735

South Dakota Republican State Senator Phil Jensen is today’s poster boy for the GOP’s ongoing “rebranding” effort, as he tells the Rapid City Journal that businesses run by the KKK should legally be able to deny service to African Americans.

Jensen goes so far as to say that businesses should have the right to deny service based on a customer’s race or religion - whether that’s right or wrong, he says, can be fairly addressed by the free market, not the government.

“If someone was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and they were running a little bakery for instance, the majority of us would find it detestable that they refuse to serve blacks, and guess what? In a matter of weeks or so that business would shut down because no one is going to patronize them,” he said.

Jensen, of course, is an evangelical Christian like any good Republican; and he also wants to make it legal to discriminate against gays, under the disguise of “religious freedom,” this year’s right wing excuse for bigotry.

This session, Jensen sponsored Senate Bill 128, which would have allowed businesses to deny service to people based on their sexual orientation and not fear a lawsuit.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocates, and even some Republicans, decried the legislation as discriminatory. Sen. Mark Kirkeby, R-Rapid City, called it “a mean, nasty, hateful, vindictive bill.” It was killed in committee.

But Jensen remains a supporter of SB 128. He calls it a bill that would have ensured the freedom of businesses to choose their clientele.

“It’s a bill that protects the constitutional right to free association, the right to free speech and private property rights,” he said.

That’s not how the law works Mr. Jensen. I know your party wants to claim credit for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 while at the same time rejecting the spirit of that law.

The Rand Paul explanation of CRA in action.

It’s becoming frighteningly common honestly. But yet as I said, they want to take credit for that law too because LBJ allegedly had some racist language.

No surprise: Southern Baptist history, Conflicts Over Slavery

Slavery in the 19th century became the most critical moral issue dividing Baptists in the United States. Struggling to gain a foothold in the South, after the American Revolution, the next generation of Baptist preachers accommodated themselves to the leadership of southern society. Rather than challenging the gentry on slavery and urging manumission (as did the Quakers and Methodists), they began to interpret the Bible as supporting the practice of slavery and encouraged good paternalistic practices by slaveholders. They preached to slaves to accept their places and obey their masters. In the two decades after the Revolution during the Second Great Awakening, Baptist preachers abandoned their pleas that slaves be manumitted.

After first attracting yeomen farmers and common planters, in the nineteenth century, the Baptists began to attract major planters among the elite. While the Baptists welcomed slaves and free blacks as members, whites controlled leadership of the churches, their preaching supported slavery, and blacks were usually segregated in seating.

The Southern Baptist Convention’s pro-slavery origin might be no more relevant than the similar outlook of the Democratic Party in that period, if not for this huge and wholly successful effort to return the SBC to its roots:
Southern Baptist Convention conservative resurgence

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) experienced an intense struggle for control of the resources and ideological direction of the now sixteen million member denomination. The campaign began around 1960. It was launched with the charge that the seminaries and denominational agencies were dominated by liberals. Its initiators called it a Conservative Resurgence while its detractors have labeled it a Fundamentalist Takeover. The movement was primarily aimed at reorienting the denomination away from a perceived liberal trajectory and towards an unambiguous affirmation of biblical inerrancy.

It was achieved by the systematic election, beginning in 1979, of conservative individuals to lead the Southern Baptist Convention. Theologically moderate and liberal leaders were voted out of office. Though some senior employees were fired from their jobs, most were replaced through attrition. All moderate and liberal presidents, professors, department heads, etc., of Southern Baptist seminaries, mission groups and other convention-owned institutions were replaced with conservatives. The Takeover/Resurgence was the most serious controversy ever to occur within the Southern Baptist Convention—the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. One of its chief architects later described it as a “reformation…achieved at an incredibly high cost.”

And not a single blessed person challenged him on it. Not his colleagues, not the bystanders, and certainly not the reporter taking down the remarks.

We have laws like the Civil Rights Act so when a family is driving on a highway, and sees a sign that says “Food, fuel 22 miles”, they don’t pull into the gas station and hear, “We don’t serve people like you.”

Capitalism is not the same thing as anarchy. Laws like the Civil Rights Act are needed to make capitalism work. Can you imagine if every commercial transaction were conditioned on how the business owner(s) felt about you personally?

The sanctions are a symbolic gesture and really don’t have much effect on the Russian officials or their decision making. What Carney can’t/won’t say is sanctioning Putin might actually hurt the Russians and effect their decision making. It’s an escalation the White House is going to avoid.

On the other hand, it’s best not to blow all your non-military ammo up front. Better to hold more stringent measures in reserve in case you have to escalate, especially when you don’t have much to work with.

Rand Paul, this fellow and other free market fundamentalists seem to think the Free Market (tm) lies at the heart of our social structure, and that other systems (like federal and state government) are layered on top - interfering with the Free Market(tm)’s natural, optimal state.

That’s why it makes sense for them to view government as something that can get out of the way, instead of viewing government as a system that creates a level playing field for all, and acts as a referee when the players try to break the rules.

Sigh…

A pastor from a church in Dandora Phase 2 has ordered all female members to go to the church ‘free’ - without bra and panties for Christ to enter their lives!

Rev. Njohi of Lord’s Propeller Redemption church has advised female worshippers from wearing any undergarments to the church terming them as ungodly. In a meeting chaired by him, a rule was passed banning the wearing of inner wears. Njohi claims that when going to church, people need to be free in ‘body’ and ‘spirit’ to receive Christ.

He went ahead to warn members of dire consequences if they secretly put on their inner wears. A member of the church who sought anonymity said that in last Sunday’s service, ladies were pantieless and braless just as the pastor ordered.

Mothers were also advised to do the same and check their daughter when coming to church on Sundays so as to receive Christ too.

Link

Funny, I don’t remember any such prohibition against women’s underthings anywhere in the bible. One might almost think that this was all the pastors idea in order to get some titillating views. But of course that can’t be right, can it?

Putin rattles the saber:

Russia deploys combat aircraft to Belarus

Russia has deployed a number of fighter and airborne early warning (AEW) platforms near to Ukraine in response to US and NATO aircraft movements in Eastern Europe, state media reported.

The Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily - VVS) sent six Sukhoi Su-27 ‘Flanker’ fighters and three unidentified transport aircraft to Belarus on 13 March, RIA Novosti reported. This was followed two days later by the deployment of a Beriev A-50 ‘Mainstay’ AEW platform to Baranovichi Air Base in Belarus.

The move is being seen as a direct response to the US Air Force’s (USAF’s) deployment of six additional Boeing F-15C Eagle fighters to the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission in Lithuania and 12 Lockheed Martin F-16s to Poland the week prior, and to the NATO and UK Royal Air Force (RAF) sending Boeing E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) aircraft to patrol the Ukrainian border.

Separately, the Russian Navy has begun air defence exercises from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, which is currently sailing in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. While the Sukhoi Su-33 ‘Flanker-D’ air defence fighters and Kamov Ka-27 ‘Helix’ anti-submarine helicopters are too far away to directly intervene in the Ukrainian crisis, their exercising is no doubt designed to send a clear message of Russian intent and resolve to face down any Western response to Russia’s invasion of Crimea.

This is just for show on Russia’s part. 6 on 6, our F-15Cs would blow their Su-27Ds out of the sky. We might lose one plane, but they’d lose all of theirs.

Sen. John McCain, who traveled to Kiev last weekend to meet with Ukrainian leaders, told The Daily Beast that he expects to be on the list and is happy about it.

“You think I’m not going to be on it?” McCain said. “I would be honored to be on that list.”

McCain said he would not be impacted financially by being subject to a visa ban and asset freeze in the Russian Federation.

“I guess I’m going to have to try to withdraw my money from my secret account in St. Petersburg,” he joked.

It’s like I’ve said before, I have no difficulty looking at these dipshits and thinking they’d have absolutely loved Hitler. Here you have Putin basically playing by the same playbook, blaming the West for the loss of Russian power and prestige, moving ethnic Russians in Ukraine to give him an excuse to “protect” them, putting his own puppet in power to make the takeover that much easier, but now his useful idiots are arguing that he was “forced” to do this by the US overturning a “legitimate government.”

The only things that haven’t issued from Putin’s lips yet is “[Russia] has been stabbed in the back” and “Russia needs living space”.

I wonder if those concepts sound the same in Russian as they do in their original German?

I just ended it by bluntly telling him he was an authoritarian bootlicker, a cringing lickspittle who would be all too happy to play toady for whatever tyrant suited his fancy, as long as he’d be allowed to sit at his Master’s knee and lick his hand like the dog that he was.

Opinion piece from Tim Egan on Paul Ryan.

Excerpt:

Ryan boasts of the Gaelic half of his ancestry, on his father’s side. “I come from Irish peasants who came over during the potato famine,” he said last year during a forum on immigration.

But with a head still stuffed with college-boy mush from Ayn Rand, he apparently never did any reading about the times that prompted his ancestors to sail away from the suffering sod. Centuries of British rule that attempted to strip the Irish of their language, their religion and their land had produced a wretched peasant class, subsisting on potatoes. When blight wiped out the potatoes, at least a million Irish died - one in eight people.

“The Almighty, indeed, sent the potato blight, but the English created the famine,” wrote the fiery essayist John Mitchel, whose words bought him a ticket to the penal colony of Tasmania.

“In the process of decommissioning a nuclear powered submarine, the spent nuclear fuel is the first to be removed and transported away. The work continues with removing the rubber that covers the outer hull of the submarine. This is a process liable to catch fire as it has happened several times with nuclear powered submarines under decommissioning at the Zvezhdochka yard in Severodvinsk.”

I used to think I did, but never checked it out—wasn’t that interested, although I incorrectly assumed I had some Ulster Scots in there somewhere (NC has quite a few). But after reviewing what family members told me over the years, I realized that probably all of my ancestors came from England and may have been early settlers. My grandmother claimed Nathanael Greene (born in RI and died in GA) was an ancestor. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I think my maternal uncle (her son) did some genealogy before he died, on the Smiths (my grandfather from GA) and Greenes. I know on my dad’s side that they originally settled in TN and later moved to AL and theirs were not only English surnames but traditional English first names as well.
