The Onion’s AV Club: Glenn Greenwald Loves Sony, Now That They’ve Bought the Rights to His Book

Expected to be even more profitable than when he changed his mind about the War on Terror
Humor • Views: 26,998

The Onion’s AV Club zeroes right in on the Mighty Greenwald: Glenn Greenwald Loves Sony, Now That They’ve Bought the Rights to His Edward Snowden Book.

This is how you do “scathing.”

“I’m very happy to be working with Amy Pascal, Doug Belgrad and the team at Sony Pictures Entertainment, who have a successful track record of making thoughtful and nuanced true-life stories that audiences want to see,” said Greenwald of the same executives he had previously accused of producing “the ultimate hagiography of the most secretive arm of America’s National Security State” when they made Zero Dark Thirty, but now heartily endorses, because they’re giving him lots of money.

“We are extremely proud that […] Glenn chose Sony to bring this riveting story to the big screen,” added Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, the Sony subsidiary Greenwald likened to the Nazi propaganda machine a year and a half ago, but which now owns the rights to Greenwald’s book.

Read the whole hilarious thing.

If you’re that willing to sell your morals and ethics (exposing once again the moral flexibility of a pretzel), then one has to wonder what else Greenwald has been selling with these incessant doom and gloom pronouncements about the NSA and the documents stolen by Snowden.

GG comparing Bigelow to Nazi-sympathizing German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl:

theguardian.com

But, says Bigelow, that is not her responsibility: she is merely depicting, not advocating. Without comparing the crimes involved, that was always the controversy surrounding German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, widely hailed as one of the most brilliant and innovative filmmakers of the 20th Century, yet also widely despised for producing films that glorified Nazism and excluded all of its crimes. One of her principal defenses - I was simply showing what was taking place, not judging - has been rather vehemently rejected by most commentators, because it (at best) naively ignores the obvious effects of what she produced, and because she had a responsibility to judge those crimes.

In its opening weekend, the film came in eighth place with an estimated $1.7 million, one of the lowest openings for a DreamWorks release, and the worst 2013 debut for a wide release in 1,769 theatres in the United States. The film was considered a box office flop in the United States.

Actually i rather expected the appeals court to put it on hold. The rule is simple: which side has the more unreparable harm. If marriages are permitted but the state wins, all the people who received licenses have to have them reversed or see other legal games. If marriages are on hold and the state loses, the marriages are ‘merely’ delayed a few weeks/months.

Not being a legal eagle like Lawhawk, my reading of the motions might be wrong, but from reading them, Idaho doesn’t stand a chance of winning this. The 9th should have let the stay go into effect if for no other reason than to push the SCOTUS into finally taking action on this issue instead of trying to kick it down the road.

I think the 9th is just being overcautious so as not to play to their liberal reputation, also Kennedy is their Circuit Justice and he’s an unstable POS. Best not to get him involved before it goes to the Supremes.

In the Utah case the 10th refused to issue a stay because the appeals were terribly written. Sotomayor as 10th Circuit Justice finally stepped in after tons of weddings had already been performed, but nobody believes she’s going to rule in the appellants’ favor. She probably just did it for the same reason the 9th did, to avoid having her impartiality questioned before having her final say.

softcom.net

“Motion results from d, matter from t. Heat results from d, cold from t. Dark space is all t, light space is near a sun is d, the wise do not approach…. Death begins with d is true.”

—Richard S. Shaver

According to Shaver, our sun began as a wet, cloud-wrapped planet with vast coal beds (what did it use for a sun?). Eventually, this world was ignited by a meteor, and for unguessable eons it burned cleanly, dispensing health-giving integrative energy throughout the solar system. During this period, Earth was colonized by two spacefaring races, the Atlans and Titans, who called their new settlement Lemuria. The Atlans and Titans, masters of te energy, were dis-free and virtually immortal. Eternally young, they never stopped growing, so fifty-footers were not uncommon. Once they achieved a bulk that made it impractical to continue living on one planet, they simply moved on to a larger one, still young and vital.

These Elders developed powerful ray technologies such as the ben-ray, which broadcast integrative, healing energies; the stim-ray, which allowed the randy giants to prolong and heighten sexual pleasure; the telesolidograph, which could broadcast three-dimensional images; the penetray, used to observe events from vast distances; and the telepathic augmenter or telaug, which transmitted thought. In the cities, rays “continually broadcast an abstract inspiration to creative work.” Though peaceful, the Elders also possessed deadly beams that could kill from great distances.

Unfortunately, Sol’s protective “carbon shell” burned away about 20,000 years ago, and it became a doom star, broadcasting poisonous dis particles that concentrate in our soil and cause aging, which is not a natural process at all but a form of radiation poisoning. (Shaver was impressed by the publicity surrounding those unfortunate young girls who died, earlier in the century, after painting radium on clock faces; they looked haggard and aged beyond their years, and he took this as a literal demonstration of detrimental energy.) The Elders first escaped the deadly sunlight by digging in, creating the Cavern World, a massive network of subsurface dwellings and passages throughout the planet’s crust, “tier on tier of cities, endlessly vast, the homes of giants…. An area beyond calculation, a maze, a catacomb, labyrinth…. Plane over plane, multiplied forever mile upon mile in depth, endlessly on and on.” And these were caves not of steel but of integrative materials, Elder-stuff that grows only denser and more durable with the passing millennia.

The Cavern World was home to some 50 billion Atlans and Titans at one point. But even these titanic burrows failed to protect the Elder races from the degenerative effects of Sol’s dis rays, and so about 12,000 years ago they were forced to abandon Lemuria for the safety of younger stars. Some may have found refuge with the Nortan, an Elder race that distrusts suns entirely and lives only on “dark worlds” lit and warmed by scientific means.

All I can say to that is Alex Jones, read it and weep, because you’ll never come up with anything like that.

ETA: There’s also a strong H.P. Lovecraft influence in Shaver’s writings, as well as others like James Churchwood and A. Merritt.

Russian police arrest dozens after killing provokes ethnic unrest

(Reuters) - Russian police detained nearly 60 people on Thursday after a demonstration venting anger against immigrants and demanding the arrest of an Uzbek man suspected of killing a local turned violent, Russian media reported.

“Some of the hundreds of protesters in the town of Pushkino, 30 km (20 miles) northeast of Moscow, chanted anti-immigrant slogans, toppled kiosks at a street market and attacked a bus, beating its driver, Ekho Moskvy radio reported.

“Putin’s pledge to protect Russian-speakers in Ukraine - by military force if necessary - seems to have increased the anger of Russian nationalists at home who accuse the government of ignoring their rights and going easy on migrants.” More

112 Dr Lizardo  May 15, 2014 3:10:03pm

Heh, heh….a little more Shaver -

Thousands of us are shanghaied into the caverns each year to serve the dero as slaves, playthings or food, for we are a perennial favorite on dero tables. With ben rays, torture can be prolonged for months or even years. A popular dero pastime is to disassemble their victims under a ben ray, leaving them as living dissections. Surface women are wired full of “sex stim” and used as living furniture, the dero taking pleasure in their undulations; others are given “growth stimulation focused on breasts till they get enormous and give milk like a cow which they use for a beverage.”

In addition, the dero use their ray mech to seed death, deception and “tamper” (a favorite Shaverian word) throughout the surface world. The demons, elves, and trolls of legend were dero, it goes without saying, and black magic was merely ray trickery. Nowadays, dero antics are often attributed to secret services. Shaver claimed that the dero sometimes impersonate FBI agents on the telephone, and hinted that many rich, powerful families have been replaced by dero-controlled doubles. The Nazis were dero puppets and the Lindbergh kidnapping was a dero job.

If you doubt this, you may be suffering from brain damage. Vast numbers of surface worlders — you, me, and most certainly Richard S. Shaver — have been slyly lobotomized by cutting rays projected from the caverns. In an early letter to Palmer, Shaver apologized: “they have cut most of the nerves and they are inoperative entirely….much of my brain is injured by them, you must forgive my forgetting — my wandering from the subject, it is the result of injuries — repaired again and again by the ben, but always the little imps start their destruction again.”

In addition to the dero, the Cavern World harbors small, hunted groups of tero (integrative ro), Elder descendants who, for reasons never adequately explained, have not succumbed to detrimental radiation. These tero are locked in ceaseless combat with the dero, and some befriended Shaver: “Right under my feet men die on racks because the dero…have caught them trying to help protect Shaver.”

The dero and tero populations of the caverns are dwarfed by a mass of human slaves as well as tribes of depraved freebooters who have drifted down from the surface world during various eras. While not as luridly evil as the dero, these too are a pretty loathsome crowd, vicious gangsters who slave and smuggle in alliance with topside criminals. Each major city apparently has its subsurface equivalent inhabited by these thugs, and many a “runaway” gets sold down the shaft. But wait, as one is constantly tempted to say: it gets worse. When the saucer summer of 1947 rolled around, Shaver blithely incorporated it: of course the saucers are the same vessels once piloted by the Elders. Unfortunately, “today the ships from space come not to help us, but to plunder.” Elder ships would not stray so near a detrimental sun. Our near-space, alas, is dominated by the Medieval Illicit, a cartel of space pirates and slavers.

These, then, are the secret forces behind history, the age-old order that Shaver was attempting to topple with his revelations.

No school like the old school!!

Of conspiracy theorists, that is. :)

He said, ‘Well, I don’t even know how to explain it to you if you’re not a dealer!’ I went back to the .pdf of the part and muddled through as well as I could. Wasn’t good enough. The bike came back today with a problem in the same area. This time the (different) guy, after ascertaining that I was not a dealer (btw, non-dealers are supposed to press 2, which I did) we walked through the symptoms, decided what the most likely solution was, figured out the model year of the bike and the ID of the part needed, then he said, ‘but I don’t know how to ship it to you if you’re not a dealer!’ He spoke with his boss and apparently figured out that they have access to some form of shipping that does not depend upon my being a Specialized dealer. And there will be no charge, but I think that was out of not wanting to deal with the complexity of billing a non-dealer than an admission that the part was defective.

Eleven months ago the same part was replaced after a conversation with a VERY helpful person in that department. I should have written the name down. And I’m going to encourage the customer to replace the part with a non-Specialized upgrade.

I was walking to work this morning and a police car stopped right in front of me, the officer got out, and said he was just randomly stopping people and asking questions. He asked where I live (I was a block and a half from home) wrote down my address and my name, asked whether I had any concerns about the neighborhood. I told him about the annoying chihuahuas across the street, he wrote that down too. I asked him what was up with randomly stopping people. He said it was community policing. He’s getting to know the area better. He looked about 20.

If I weren’t a gray-haired lady with a perfectly clean record (I think the juvy record is sealed) I would have been nervous as heck.

I think he’s a newbie or an auxiliary, being asked to get to know a neighborhood by canvassing it. So he’s not looking for criminals, he’s profiling a community. Oh, a lot of people find x a problem here, etc. They want to hear about stuff from the people in the community. I think community policing is a good idea. It’s just weird to have a cop write down your name and address for nothing. At least he didn’t ask for ID. And I know people who have had negative experiences with law enforcement who would have had stronger reactions than I did.

I do hope he sticks around and gets to know the whole town. We tend to be a police training facility for towns that pay a decent salary.

I think it’s important that he gets to know the “normals” that are the majority of people who just live a regular existence. A lot of cops get very cynical since they can run into some of the worst of human behavior, and unfortunately, a few begin to imitate it. It’s got to be an eye-opener for young people like him.

Kenyan terror threat prompts evacuation of UK tourists

Hundreds of British tourists are being evacuated from Kenya after the Foreign Office warned there was a “high threat” from terrorists in the country.

Tour operators Thomson and First Choice cancelled all flights to Mombasa until October and said holidaymakers would be flown back as a precautionary measure.

As many as 500 people are affected, the Telegraph newspaper reported.

The FCO said the main threat came from extremists linked to the militant Islamist al-Shabab group.

It’s exceedingly detailed - what I noticed as I read through it is that it pulled me in; it’s like reading a mini-mystery novel.

I’m just gobsmacked at the amount of detail compared to what we typically get to see here in the States.

That’s what struck me as well. I was stunned to see the level of detail - typically, American police play their cards close to the vest.

In this particular case, the only reason the suspect hasn’t been apprehended - to the best of my knowledge - is that he must have fled the country shortly afterwards and hasn’t returned.

Intriguingly, on page three of the .pdf, it notes that sand grains found in the hip bag left by the suspect likely originated in the Mojave Desert of California. That’s a very vital clue; it might trigger someone’s memory of a friend/family member/acquaintance who journeyed to California before the homicides took place, and he may have mentioned that fact to others.

236 Rocky-in-Connecticut  May 15, 2014 6:19:41pm

I’m sure that since Greeny used Snowden to launch his now expansive media career the Pee-Ewlitzer Prize winner won’t mind at all using a significant chunk of his Sony and book proceeds to help secure the release of Mr. Snowden from his current Russian small cramped leaky plumbing hellhole “Putin protection.”

And should Mr. Snowden be subject to prosecution upon return to the US, the only ethical thing for Greeny to do would be to bankroll his legal defense since it seems this entire chain of events revolves around the naive shenanigans noble efforts of said Mr. Snowden.

And hell freezes over.
