Interview With Michael Brown’s Friend: He Was ‘Shot Like an Animal’

“I definitely think he’s guilty of murder”
US News • Views: 27,574

MSNBC

Dorin Johnson, who was with Michael Brown when he was gunned down in the street by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer, describes what happened in more detail in an interview with KSDK; this new account is completely consistent with his previous accounts.

Johnson breaks down at one point, as he talks about seeing his friend shot down “like an animal.”

Please note that even though Johnson was the closest eyewitness to this shooting, neither the St. Louis County police department nor the Ferguson police department have interviewed him to date about the incident.

Charles,

A clarification/distinction needs to be made. There are multiple police departments involved here. There’s a St. Louis PD (which is the city police force within St. Louis proper) and the St. Louis County Police, which is involved in this case (and whose officer was involved in the shooting this morning).

That’s in addition to the Ferguson PD and state police, plus mutual support from other local police departments involved.

So far, Johnson has not been interviewed by either the Ferguson PD or the St. Louis County Police.

The St. Louis city police are not involved in this matter.

Fox can fuck off for all the race baiting they do. It doesn’t matter if it’s this asshole or that other asshole Hannity who had no problem befriending a white nationalist. Fox is filled with racism and it starts with Roger Ailes who of course was behind the Willie Horotn ad.

“Without knowing the facts,” i.e. without knowing the excuse the cops are going to offer for why a white officer should be cleared of any crimes for shooting a black teen multiple times in the back.

Well, Middle School orientation was a joke.

We get her class schedule in the first 10 minutes, but are told we need to grab an orientation package, then wait in one line for her books, and another line for her PE clothes.

It took 40 minutes to get the orientation package, then we waited 45 minutes in the book line before someone came out:

“We’ll also be handing out books tomorrow and Friday during class, and they can just buy their PE gear during the 1st class, but you can wait in line and get them today if you want to.”

Whole lot of pissed off parents.

At this point, I suspect they’re deliberately poisoning the well to protect the killer.

Let’s face it — with the way the cops have handled this, it will be almost impossible to prosecute Brown’s murder since seating a jury anywhere in Missouri is going to be a nightmare.

That training took a backseat to turning every cop into a wannabe SWAT officer, exchanging tension easing and deescalation for accurate shooting and beating the shit out of suspects and not leaving too many marks.

St. Louis County police spokesman Brian Schellman why police haven’t interviewed Johnson.

Which is darkly funny, three or five days later, because I’m not sure the post-shooting handling of the case isn’t more egregious than the actual shooting of Brown.

It’s very easy to have one dumbshit do one dumbshit thing in what he perceived to be the heat of the moment. Everybody since then has had time to think about what they’re doing, what message they’re sending, and what goals they are attempting to achieve, with opportunities to talk with each other to make sure they’re not missing any important angle… and this is what we get.

Either the Ferguson PD really are clown shoes or they think we’re stupid. Even when Trayvon Martin was shot, the cops made sure to talk with every witness, both eye and ear, before the night was through. But the FPD expects us to believe that the one eyewitness to the entire chain of events has been totally unavailable to them for 4 days, which is why they’re running their entire investigation based upon the cop’s report.

Is that true? I thought the young lady on the apartment patio saw it, and didn’t his friend say the cop car was straddling the road at an angle blocking it off and at least three cars were stopped?

Just going for clarification. I am also hoping there are other witnesses that will collaborate his friends version of what he saw, at least for the FBI and Justice department and maybe for the local prosecutors and any one else willing to take this case.

I’ve noticed that a lot of ex-Army guys who didn’t go private security have gone into law enforcement. Take a very close look at the police/swat team officers in Ferguson. Most have their faces covered either by a gas mask, face mask or baklava. They’re wearing their gas masks even when they’re just standing around a long ways from the action. Also notice that name tags are not visible or they are printed in black ink on a very dark background. Many are wearing their badges but the numbers on the badge are very small and difficult to read or be photographed.

All of the above make it very difficult to identify individual officers by eye sight or camera.

Trying to hide their identities if they’re observed or filmed doing something “illegal”?

Or just part of the new police/military persona?

Also notice that name tags are not visible or they are printed in black ink on a very dark background. Many are wearing their badges but the numbers on the badge are very small and difficult to read or be photographed.

Think you mean balaclava, although picturing cops smeared with baklava was amusing.

I’ve talked to cops (local and state and city) in the past 10 or so years and they have a problem with some of the newer “recruits”. They think they are “The Solution” and that “solution” is all cracking skulls and quick draws. I’ve been screwed with in my time by sociopathic cops and have had my share of nickel rides as a youth, but the new breed are wanna be hard guys. Not all, but lots. Just look at the photos from Ferguson and tell me what you see. That’s not cops. It’s something else and it’s not good.

Paramedics intubated him and then he was airlifted to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he underwent emergency brain surgery for about six hours and is in critical condition.
The poor kid has had a lifetime of chronic health problems, which have worsened a lot since he was forced to take an early disability retirement a few years ago and his insurance hit the lifetime cap before ACA took effect.

Wanting the protest to end makes sense for the FPD. The protest, or rather the cops overreaction to it, is what is keeping this story in the press. They tried to smother it by keeping the press out, but all that did was making their heavy-handed actions more stunning. So now they’re trying the “law and order” route, saying protestors are presenting a danger to the community and if they continue then the FPD will have “no choice” but to break them up.

re: #160 Charles Johnson

This police chief is totally bullshitting.

They don’t want to release the autopsy results because it might “influence witnesses?”

How exactly can witnesses be influenced by the autopsy results? I’m not quite sure how that would be the case.

There are only a handful of known witnesses, not including Johnson and the cop involved. It wouldn’t prejudice either of them, let alone anyone else to know what was the outcome of the autopsy results.

What it sounds like is a lame attempt to stonewall releasing the results that would show that Brown was shot multiple times, perhaps shot in the back, and not at close range at that (supposition on my part). It’s also supposition on my part that the coroner’s report would also indicate that there was no evidence of a struggle or that Brown threw a punch or that he only had defensive wounds.

The really twisted side National Review’s philo-fascism came through in 1961 when Israel captured Adolph Eichmann, a leading Nazi, and tried him for crimes against humanity. National Review did everything they could editorially to offer extenuating arguments against the prosecution of Eichmann, arguing that he was being subjected to a “show trial”, that this was post facto justice, that pursuing Nazi crimes would weaken the Western alliance and further the cause of communism. As the magazine editorialized on April 22, 1961, the trial of Eichmann was a “lurid extravaganza” leading to “bitterness, distrust, the refusal to forgive, the advancement of Communist aims, [and] the cultivation of pacifism.” (The editors didn’t consider that a mere 16 years after the death camps were liberated, a “refusal to forgive” the architects of genocide might be understandable).

re: #195 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Scholar Peter Novick:

The general circulation magazine that outdid all others in the frequency and vehemence of its attacks on the trial was William F. Buckley’s National Review. Its first commentary on Eichmann was noteworthy in that, at a time when all the other media were reporting his millions of victims, it spoke of Eichmann’s being “generally believed to have a primary hand in exterminating hundreds of thousands.” Two weeks later the magazine returned to the subject, attacking the “pernicious” trial that was “manipulat[ing] a series of ex post facto laws … to give assassination a juridical rationale.” National Review’s Eichmann coverage then turned to anti-Semitic ‘humor.’ The magazine presented the imagined conversations of a vulgar Jewish couple: “Sylvie” spoke to “Myron” about Eichmann (and gold, and hairdressers) in their Central Park West apartment while “doing her nails … on an enormous crescent-shaped, gold-on-gold, French provincial Castro convertible.” A bit later, the National Review devoted an editorial to how the Communists were profiting from the “Hate Germany movement” being furthered by the Eichmann trial.

Gee.

At the same time, National Review did an editorial about the attempt of George Lincoln Rockwell, the head of the American Nazi party, to speak in New York city. The editorial criticized the “mob of Jews who hurled insults at him. Some lunged at him, and were kept from Rockwell’s throat only by a cordon of policemen. Are we ‘against’ the Jews whose pressure kept Rockwell from exercising his constitutional right to speak, and who would, if given the chance, have beat him bloody? Of course.” But the editorial admirable defence of “the constitutional right to speak” had a limit; a paragraph later the editors are criticizing the civil rights movement for their “theatrical” challenge to white supremacy in the south, a response which was “met, inevitably, by a spastic response. By violence.” (This editorial, quoted by Novick, is from the June 3, 1961 issue of National Review)

As broken as Washington has become, immigration had seemed like the one issue our elected leaders might be capable of handling in 2014. The politics, for one thing, appeared relatively easy. Fears about “border security” had faded alongside Lou Dobbs’ career: The migration flow of undocumented immigrants had fallen to net zero by 2012, down from a growth of 400,000 per year under George W. Bush. And congressional Republicans had strong incentive to cooperate with Democrats on comprehensive immigration reform, for reasons of basic self-preservation (what with the exploding Latino electorate) and with deep pressure coming from the business community. Beyond all of that, it seemed unfathomable - un-American, really - to allow the dysfunction hobbling our immigration system to continue, when the immigrant remains so fundamental to our self-identity, our foundational myth. To reject this aspect of America would feel like an act of nihilism, a national death wish akin to the Italian parliament suddenly deciding to ban carbohydrates, Australia paving all of its beaches, Jamaica’s state radio switching to an all-metal format.

Speaking of movies. I figured-out how to access Youtube from my Apple TV (WOOT!!!) and watched all 4 hours of the Spanish Civil War documentary recommened by William Barnett-Lewis and others here on LGF. This was accomplished on Monday night.

There was a lot there to fathom. I mostly gleaned that the Spanish Civil War was a clusterfuck of ideologies. A lot of people died.

Did I get it right?

WHAT I found really interesting was the realization that the RC Church had such a stranglehold on the people. Abortion on demand was legalized for a time.

Here’s a scary fact: the so-called SWAT teams for a lot of towns aren’t the highly trained specialists of TV and movies. They’re beat cops who volunteer to do a couple extra days of training a month for a few extra bucks and the chance to play with bigger guns than usual.

Just looking at all those paramilitary geared up SWAT/Bomb squad/DHS/Border patrol guys, you would think we suffer terror attacks weekly or more, but only have a car stolen or shoplifting happen once or twice in a lifetime.

When the land the street from my subdivision was sold to developers. the local fire department got the two old houses for practice. I drove by one day and about 8 firemen all dressed in their gear were straddling the roofs holding axes and (I imagined) grunting. I thought, they never grow-up.

“As for the unaccompanied minors, advocates fear that a number of the children already here, because of the narrowness of U.S. asylum law, might be sent back to persecution and, in some cases, certain death. Rep. Joaquin Castro, a Democrat representing part of San Antonio, believes the ways in which we define refugees must be updated for the 21st century - that connecting refugee status to specific enemy states, at a time when non-state actors like Al Qaeda or narcotrafficking cartels make for bigger threats, is leftover thinking from the Cold War.

“One of the ways we demonstrated to communist dictators that we disapproved of their government was by accepting their people as refugees,” Castro points out. “Granting refugee status to these children would be a way of demonstrating how insidious these cartels are, and that the U.S. stands against them. FORT WAYNE, IN—Explaining that his sole concern is serving and protecting his community, Fort Wayne police officer Vincent Turner told reporters Wednesday that he does not see any difference between black and light-skinned black suspects. “As an officer of the law, I am committed to administering justice swiftly and even-handedly, regardless of whether the suspect has dark skin or really dark skin,” said Turner, adding that he has no problem giving a full pat-down to any potential criminal or hauling them down to precinct headquarters in the back of his patrol car, even if they are more of a light mocha color. “When you’re responding to reports of gunshots fired, or sprinting down an alleyway, you’re not thinking about where the suspect falls on the spectrum of African-American skin tones—you’re thinking about doing your job. Heck, the guy could be a very dark-looking Latino, for all I care—I treat every one of them the same. He’s still just a suspect to me.” Turner added that his dedication to upholding the law stems from a belief that all local residents should be able to walk their streets without fear, whether they come from an affluent white neighborhood or a working-class white neighborhood.

Yep.

I’m basing a novel I’m working on about the Second American Civil War on the Spanish Civil War. Including the corporatist, religious side (The Falangist role is filled by the Religious Right) being supported by Facist states. Which in a nice piece of irony is mostly Putin’s Russia.

In case you’re wondering, the war is won by the same people that won the Yugoslavian Civil War.

Teasle: Now don’t give me any of that crap, Trautman. Do you think Rambo was the only guy who had a tough time in Vietnam? He killed a police officer for Christ’s sake!
Trautman: You’re goddamn lucky he didn’t kill all of you.

381 jaunte  Aug 13, 2014 2:51:15pm

The growing similarity between our domestic police forces and the U.S. military is a result of the Pentagon’s 1033 Program. This allows the Defense Department to donate surplus military equipment and weapons to law enforcement agencies. In addition to the frightening presence of paramilitary weapons in American towns, the program has led to rampant fraud and abuse.

Shocking, almost comical, examples of abuse have been well-documented — from the officer who sold his weapons on eBay, to the one who lent his weapons to unauthorized friends and the police departments that lost the military weapons or tried to auction them off.
……
Taxpayer money should not have to support the costs of maintaining the weapons of war that local police forces have acquired. Citizens deserve to know that their congressional leaders and law enforcement officers are working together to protect them — not recklessly engaging in a gluttonous arms race or irresponsibly losing dangerous weapons.

Actually, those people are far closer to Marx than they realize.

Like Marx they believe that capitalism will push for every advantage it can get in the pursuit of profit no matter what damage gets done to society in the process. The only difference between them and Marx is they think this is a good thing.

They also, although they don’t say so out loud, believe that such behaviour will trigger a class war. Their difference from Marx is they think they, the bourgeoisie, will win it rather than the proletariat.

Minor differences really.

Thinking good thoughts. (If I say Bethlehem/Nazareth, PA I think you’ll know who I am.)

Back story on this.
MrBWS and his crews showed up very very late one day when they were called out on storm.
After spending most of the day traveling and dealing with horrific road conditions, they found themselves in the neighborhood of Bethelem/Nazareth PA and no available hotel rooms.
I put out the sad story on another blog and BeachDem (aka another nic there) had a friend who happened to be a nun who operated a halfway house and was more than willing to open the place up for the linemen.
As we were coordinating arrangements, the company managed to find hotel accommodations.
But the power of the internet made itself known and the guys were grateful there was indeed a room for them in Bethlehem/Nazareth if needed.
Oh, and when MrBWS first called home that day he was singing “The Weight” and then asked “Guess where I am??”

NR has been consistently on the wrong side of history since its founding, in direct accordance with Buckley’s motto about “standing athwart…”. They’ve been wrong so consistently, that the 1950s WFB would have condemned the WFB of 1990s for accepting MLK, integration, …

417 Kragar  Aug 13, 2014 3:27:17pm

And The Onion nails it

“As an officer of the law, I am committed to administering justice swiftly and even-handedly, regardless of whether the suspect has dark skin or really dark skin,” said Turner, adding that he has no problem giving a full pat-down to any potential criminal or hauling them down to precinct headquarters in the back of his patrol car, even if they are more of a light mocha color.

Lorca begs to differ.

You may have heard about the death of Valeriya Novodvorskaya, some called her “the grandmother of the Russian liberalism”. I don’t think she was a liberal at all, at the very least not in the American sense. She was more of a neocon libertarian, if you can imagine the mix. Anyway, she loved her some Franco and Pinochet (anti-Communists), but at the same time at least she admitted that being the rebel she was, she would have probably been shot in Franco’s Spain, just like her favorite poet Lorca was.

“As I was coming around, I heard the tires squeaking on the truck, and as I get closer, I see them tussling through the window. The kid was pulling off and the cop was pulling in,” Mitchell said.

[…]

“After the shot, the kid just breaks away. The cop follows him, kept shooting, the kid’s body jerked as if he was hit. After his body jerked he turns around, puts his hands up, and the cop continues to walk up on him and continues to shoot until he goes all the way down,” Mitchell said.

“How can you take a Confederate school built by Confederates in a Confederate state and say you’re not Confederate?” said Debbie Sible, who helped organize the protest. “It’s like my dog trying to dress up my cat.”

Sible, whose two sons attend the university, said the Civil War was fought over states’ rights, which she insisted had little to do with slavery.

“People in the South should be proud,” she said. “They should be so proud if they knew the type [of] men that were in the Confederacy, and we haven’t seen men like them since probably the Spartans in the 300 -phenomenal, and our people grow up and our kids [are] ashamed, not knowing the truth.”

From the sounds of it, the cop tried to make things physical. Perhaps Brown got close to the vehicle, the cop reached out and grabbed them, there was a scuffle as Brown tried to get away, and the cop decided that he wasn’t going to let this “punk” get away.

Just how far would one have to stretch credulity to suggest an 18 year old black kid would reach inside a cop car to attack a cop for being told to move to the sidewalk? Seriously?

The closest I can come is to picture the cop hanging on to the kid (suggested by eyewitness accounts) while pointing his gun at him. I could see the kid trying to knock the gun away to, yanno, keep his head from being blown off.

I get the feeling that the cop didn’t like that Brown wasn’t respecting his authority and reached out of the vehicle to grab Brown in an attempt to show dominance. Put a scare in the black kid to show him that the white cop is the one in charge.

I’ve come to the conclusion that conservatism as a political philosophy is inherently useless, except in times of reforming zealotry where change and disruption for its own sake is embraced (e.g., the worst excesses of the French Revolution).

The present-day US is most certainly not in a time of “reforming zealotry where change and disruption for its own sake is embraced”, leaving US conservatives with nothing better to do than nurse imaginary grievances.

To distract from this distressing week of news (and some personally sad stuff that has left my heart seriously dented), I’m having my two bestest friends over this weekend for an Iron Man movie marathon.

To appeal to our adult tastebuds, I’m fixing bruschetta and boursin cheese with fresh herbs from my little garden for appetizers/snacks. To keep with the Marvel theme and appeal to our inner kids, our main meal will be hamburgers and fries with snow cones - choice of cherry or grape - for dessert. There will also be wine, frozen margaritas, rum & coke, mohitos…

So looking forward to Saturday.
