Wanderers is a vision of humanity’s expansion into the Solar System, based on scientific ideas and concepts of what our future in space might look like, if it ever happens. The locations depicted in the film are digital recreations of actual places in the Solar System, built from real photos and map data where available.
Without any apparent story, other than what you may fill in by yourself, the idea of the film is primarily to show a glimpse of the fantastic and beautiful nature that surrounds us on our neighboring worlds - and above all, how it might appear to us if we were there.

Ubuntu is the solution to Microsoft. Wine will run Office if that’s mandatory.

One of the truly great albums. Up there with Kind of Blue, Ellington at Newport & Money Jungle for me.

Just installed Ubuntu 14.10 on the machines while Son2, my Penguinista tech support, was here for the holiday. We also did Comcast’s semi-required conversion to their free wifi/modem. Quite a shock to see how many devices required to be re-identified to the IP.

Everyone is gone now. Dau2 took the kid back to Birmingham where she’s found a daycare that will house him in General Population.

I realize that the #cop20 folk wish everyone would pay attention, but the trending in San Diego this afternoon:

Happy Thanksgiving
#SDvsBAL
#BlackFriday
#IronBowl
Ravens
Star Wars
#Ferguson
#BoltUp
Chargers

Pretty much sums up our opinion of what is important:

food
football
buying stuff
more football
Jedi mind tricks
more football
the one news story with traction
even more football

And we’re still 12 months away from the release.

I suppose everyone believes Abrams will be able to work some magic and salvage the series from the drek of the last three films (though the last one wasn’t as bad as the previous 2 IMO).

Not sure it’s so much magic as just something better than the crappy direction and wooden dialog of Lucas. Personally they had me with X-wings on a low-level assault run throwing roostertails behind them…

It won’t be the way it was that first time in May 77 (before the Time & Newsweek covers exploded it) that I saw ANH, but if it can be at least as good as Sith or Jedi I’ll be satisfied.

Among the problems with the previous three, as you noted, the wooden dialogue, much of which I ascribe to an actor having to do a solo against a green screen will I hope be the #1 improvement that Abrams will address.

As for the story: I think almost anything will work.

I’ve been running Win10 Tech Preview in dual-boot with Win8.1 on my main desktop since the preview was made available; other than a few quibbles (mostly with app compatibility on a couple of utilities I use, nothing major), it seems fairly polished for what is essentially a late alpha/early beta.

I’ve been using the Tech Preview as my daily driver for weeks and I have had much reason to be in Win8.1 for much of anything in that period.

Linux has come a long way since the days when you had to compile the kernel and GUIs were for sissies. I load up a distro once every year and its progress is impressive. For many users it’s pretty much there. If you’re doing 3D modeling your choices are limited. Photoshop is still out (And don’t tell me about GIMP. GIMP is an admirable program, but it”s not PS). PC gaming is hit and miss. If you can live within the constraints of Linux and you’re willing to learn a bit it’s a great alternative. I’d add that the Ubuntu community does a stellar job of providing support.

They got away from what they did in 4 and went back to the game’s roots. Much more oriented toward the storytelling side of things than the simulationist side. The amount of bookkeeping required has been reduced considerably.

I’ve had to give up my campaign for now because I’m dealing with an autoimmune thing that makes sitting for long periods of time excruciatingly painful (psoriatic arthritis), but I’m busy writing a setting from the base material. My DMG should be here in another week or so.

Only other game I’ve considered running is FATE, which is much more story telling oriented.

Yep. I started with Bryce way back when it was free and then moved to Blender 2.3x. The 2.7 version is very capable indeed. The UI changes and improved workflows that started with (I believe) v 2.5 are nicely done. Blender has always been one of the easiest programs with which to model and once they get a few more things (volume, subsurface scattering, etc.) sorted out in Cycles it will be superb. Hopefully the devs will soon get to the point where they can freeze the kernel long enough so that those who want to develop add-ons or plugins won’t be trying to hit a moving target.

Basic Fantasy is the one I have printed out in a binder. It’s the best of that bunch to me because it’s the most flexible. Want alingmnets? Ok. Don’t want them? Ok. Want Bards? etc. It also fits well with my taste for maximum character levels of 6 or 8. “Gandalf was a 5th level wizard” and so on.

It’s much closer to the BECMI series that TSR came out with as an alternative to AD&D. I run a light fantasy, rules light campaign that is very much oriented towards humor, with lots of odd characters and personalities. BFRPG fit in really well with my DMing style, but it’s harder to recruit players for.

Don’t know but their app framework works on Ubuntu - I have a copy of the Baldur’s Gate remake that runs fine (after a few video driver updates!) for Steam. It’s more up to the content producers than anything.

My working definition of the difference between a geek and a nerd is a nerd tries to fit in socially, but fails miserably. A geek, while liking a lot of the same stuff that nerds do, doesn’t feel the need to be acceptable to others.

Chaosium was really good. Especially since their rule set could be used for almost any genre. Between Runequest, Call of Cthulhu, and Basic RolePlaying , you can do about anything. Gurps was just way too crunchy for me. The only other system I’ve looked at at all was FATE (based on Fudge) which is a big paradigm shift, being primarily a collaborative story telling system rather than a role playing game as such.

I like Chaosium because it didn’t rely on experience points to level up, and the way it didn’t grant hit points for “leveling”. Combat was always nerve wracking because it didn’t matter how experienced the character was, a single shot could still be dangerous.

The latest version of Zatoichi is good, if you like japanese samurai flicks.

I have been pretty entertained by some of the really cheesy 50’s sci fi flicks they have available. If you’re a real film buff, you might want to check out HULU, as it has a lot more in the way of foreign films, including a fair amount of Bergman and other art house flicks.

Yeah.. I thought that particular part of the rule system was probably it’s strongest point. I flirted with it as my main system for a while, but decided I didn’t mind the abstractions of D&D given that I was more interested in telling interesting and funny stories than really simulating anything.

I would hope/wish they would do something away from the main canon Vader/Luke/Leia/Han tree. The background has lots of areas that could be explored and interesting though good writing and not being afraid of wandering afield in that galaxy far far away.

Hell, the marketing cinematic for the MMO were better than the last three movies.

HURR HURR RT IF YOUR AGINST TEH COMMEN COAR!!!!!!!
Count the spelling errors:

Young Noah is not really protesting Common Core. He’s protesting the examinations, which he says are too hard. The Common Core initiative has two parts: a well thought out curriculum and end-of-year assessments. The first part many conservatives don’t like, because it’s different from their school experience and (perhaps) because it makes students THINK too much. The second is just a continuation of the exams first instituted during the No Child Left Behind days and which have now become a revenue stream for test makers and test preparation organizations, which are often one and the same.

Whether the exams are too hard is a debatable point. The AP exams are pretty damn difficult, but I don’t hear anyone suggesting they be abolished. Noah just needs to suck it up and do some work, or be willing to accept less than an A on his exams.

Roorda’s a fucking piece of work:

The SLPOA is calling for the players involved to be disciplined and for the Rams and the NFL to deliver a very public apology. Roorda said he planned to speak to the NFL and the Rams to voice his organization’s displeasure tomorrow. He also plans to reach out to other police organizations in St. Louis and around the country to enlist their input on what the appropriate response from law enforcement should be. Roorda warned, “I know that there are those that will say that these players are simply exercising their First Amendment rights. Well I’ve got news for people who think that way, cops have first amendment rights too, and we plan to exercise ours. I’d remind the NFL and their players that it is not the violent thugs burning down buildings that buy their advertiser’s products. It’s cops and the good people of St. Louis and other NFL towns that do. Somebody needs to throw a flag on this play. If it’s not the NFL and the Rams, then it’ll be cops and their supporters.”

The basal origins of the Greek eschatos supposedly come from the same source as the Latin exire and exitus, from which we get our verb and noun “exit”.

It’s uploaded with two significantly smaller sizes with the option of putting it left, right, or center in your post. It’s helpful especially with head shots of people you might be writing about.

If your image library feels cluttered and/or you don’t need all those smaller versions of your images, just go to Menu in top right corner, click Image Library and you can delete all the small images. Make sure not to delete the original uploaded image, if you do that then that image disappears in whatever comments you used it in.

A group of Cleveland police officers are suing the city over racial discrimination. The officers in question? The nine white police officers who claim that disciplinary procedures against them were too harsh following their involvement in a shooting death of two African-Americans following a car chase.

Officers sue Cleveland over 2012 police shooting

The group shot the vehicle the two were in ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SEVEN TIMES, and it was determined during the investigation that they were unarmed . The officers’ complaint is that they were placed on paid administrative leave, followed by a 45-day paid “cooling off” period, then back to a restricted duty schedule, before being returned to normal duty. There were no charges filed against them, but they still make the claim that there is racial discrimination against white police when it involves the killing of non-whites.

The nine plaintiffs allege their treatment was because of their race.

“The City of Cleveland, through the other named defendants, and the other named defendants in their individual capacities, have a history of treating non-African American officers involved in the shootings of African Americans substantially harsher than African American officers,” reads the lawsuit, filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Note that this is the same department who is currently in the news for the shooting death of an African-American 12-year old boy who was playing with a toy pistol.

Literally incendiary claims require better evidence than this. You didn’t see them setting fire to a car. You saw a flash of light and you heard a noise. But that’s not sufficient. There are a lot of possible sources of noise, and the people standing around would have reacted rather sharply to an explosion in the car, right next to them. Also, why so many witnesses? Why not false flag it if you’re going to do it? Wear something else, anything else.
