I don’t much like what Sony did, but:

1) The ocean was a very good barrier when The Great Dictator came out.

2) The chains are afraid of reducing sales of all movies at one of their most critical times, if people get spooked.

We may hope that they’ll release it after the holidays. Although I’ve heard it’s pretty terrible.

re: #28 Snarknado!

yeah, So my 2 cents on SONY’s decision to not release the film. I’m more convinced that this is about money more then ransom.

I’d bet the other industry movie houses were pissed at SONY because if say they did show the film and people took this threat seriously and stayed away from any theatre that showed the movie then some pretty good movies (and some bad ones) would be shit out of luck.

If no one goes to the movies, no one sees anything and therefore no one makes any money except maybe SONY if, I guess, maybe people would see it as some sort of protest screening or to see what all the hype was about.

This way SONY pulls it they still crate instant buzz for it but the industry doesn’t lose the big holiday box office that some use to recoup yearly losses.

Funny how Rubio brings up the Pope’s Argentinian home and its transition to democracy. Say Marco, that Ronald Reagan that you’re so fond of venerating. You do know that he loved that regime right until they pissed off Maggie Thatcher and invaded the Falklands dontcha? Honestly, Marco can go fuck himself. It’s absolute bullshit to use Cuba’s human rights record as an excuse for not having trade relations with them while we’ve had trade relations with far worse abusers of human rights. I just don’t get that about the Cuban-American political base. And what’s mindboggling is the fact that lifting the embargo will certainly help the Cubans and honestly even more is that more access to the US will weaken the anti-US propaganda too. It’s a win-win move for not just the U.S but the Cuban people as well but Rubio has to be a pathetic hack.

I hate to come across insensitive but I’m tired of the politicians in the Cuban-American exile community acting like the dictatorship they fled is the only one and that our policies need to be as hardline. Newsflash to Rubio even with Stalin, we still had an embassy in Moscow. And we established relations with China following the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Now would I prefer Cuba to be more democratic? Absolutely and you know how you foster that- you don’t isolate Cuba and continue to pursue a half century embargo that has shown no signs at all of weakening the regime. It’s awfully telling how conservatives are not only okay with relations with China but they’re perfectly happy with using China to profit. The crap about Cuba being close to our shores is nonsense too given that we were okay with Papa Doc in Haiti as well as Trujilio in the Dominican Republic.

Birth rates are also higher among Hispanic and black adolescents than among their white counterparts. In 2012, Hispanic adolescent females ages 15-19 had the highest birth rate (46.3 births per 1,000 adolescent females), followed by black adolescent females (43.9 births per 1,000 adolescent females) and white adolescent females (20.5 births per 1,000 adolescent females) (see Figure 1).[3] Estimates from 2012 data show that one in eight adolescent females (12.5%) in the United States will give birth by her 20th birthday, with substantial differences by race/ethnicity: 9 percent of white adolescent females, 18 percent of black adolescent females, and 20 percent of Hispanic adolescent females.[4]

Like I was saying earlier, so many of the first wave of exiles are the former Cuban elite, the people who either benefited from US companies running their operations in Cuba or made money off those who did. They were the ones with the resources to flee in the early days of the revolution, which they helped start with America’s backing because they figured Batista was a drag on their business and with him gone they could put a new puppet in power who’d keep the good times rolling. They lost everything when the revolution didn’t go as they’d planned and now they’re nursing a 50+ year grudge against Castro.

The man at the eye of the storm in Saudi Arabia is Ahmad Aziz Al Ghamdi. He’s a religious scholar, the former head of the religious police in Mecca, a group officially known as the Committee for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

He has the pedigree of an ultra-conservative. Yet he stunned Saudis with a religious ruling, known as a fatwa, that is very liberal by Saudi standards. He declared that the niqab, the black face veil that is ubiquitous among women in Saudi society, is not obligatory.

His answer came in a Twitter response to a tweet he receive from a Saudi woman who had turned to him for religious guidance. She asked: Does Islam allow her to post a picture of her face on social media?

His affirmative answer went viral within hours, with more than 10,000 comments on his Twitter feed that ranged from congratulations to death threats.

I’m strangely excited about Cuba. I’ve wanted to see it ever since Anthony Bourdain went there and showed old Havana. I hope that if things ever completely normalize, there’s going to be a nice period before the mega-corporations move in and sterilize the place, where you can go there, meet people, see & do cool things, and put your money right into the local’s hands. There will probably be some great values in travel.

I understand Cuba was a pretty happening place (in some ways) before the Revolution, maybe they can bring that back.

Edit: of course this is all separate consideration from the issues with Cuba that can be lumped under the “human rights” heading. I’m really thinking that if U.S. cash flows freely into that place, though, that it’s going to liberalize and the state will fold like Superman on laundry day.

It seems pretty clear that Witness 40 was unreliable, and may not have even witnessed the events in question. Regardless of her veracity, it’s also pretty clear the DA picked witnesses that would bias the grand jury against taking Wilson to trial — which means he was acting as a defense attorney and not a prosecutor.

Apparently, we can only trust on-the-record sources — and CCJ’s paid informants — and no one else.

This is all about publicity for him. He needs to stay in the limelight, and he does that by staking out intentionally controversial claims. He chose the Sony hack because there’s almost no degree of evidence that can ever be offered that he won’t be able to unilaterally discount. Right wingers reflexively refuse to trust the administration, so it doesn’t matter what the NSA / DIA / NCSD come out with, he’ll simply say they’re lying and his followers will believe it based on his own anonymously based raw assertion.

In the worst case scenario for him, if incontrovertible proof of NK involvement comes out, it will almost certainly include an element of infiltration inside Sony, so he’ll fall back on his claims of it being an inside job, say he was half right, and pat himself on the back for trolling the media successfully once more.

re: #189 goddamnedfrank

Another calculated thing about CCJ’s strategy of claiming certain knowledge about the Sony hack, it distracts people from the those lawsuits he promised he was filing against Politico and Gawker.

He strings people along from one outrageous position to another. He’s purposefully saying things that are inherently unknowable because the act itself is polarizing. His followers want to believe it, so they do, and the raw assertion becomes a kind of received knowledge and wisdom. The fact that it’s all opinion stated as certain fact becomes the shibboleth, they know exactly what they’re doing, but don’t dare admit to their own limitations for fear of being marked as an outsider. From CCJ’s point of view the intention is to remain controversial and a topic of discussion, no matter what. There’s no such thing as personal integrity, like Charlie Sheen, he’s “winning.”

I’m wondering if this is a clever strategy on Obama’s part to thin GOP voting ranks.

The way they’re hyperventilating and raging strokes, aneurysms and heart attacks will carry many of them away by 2016 severely exacerbating the demographic crisis they’re experiencing.

Despite all the other crap we’ve lived with and through, these achievements are pretty amazing for this child of the ’50s.

They can try, but once the genie is out of the bottle, it’s hard to convince him to get back inside. I just read an article about teacher in the UK who came out as gay to his primary school class, and one 9-year-old girl wrote him a letter saying it was all OK. It seems most of his class judged him by his abilities as a teacher and not by his sexual preference, and wanted to know if he had a boyfriend, etc.

The “modern” GOP may want to push gays, minorities and women back to their 1950s non-entity-ness, but it ain’t gonna work. Society moves on and old farts better get out of the way or be trampled.

I’m more sanguine for the long term. Yes, the midterms were a disaster for reason and centrist-to-left wing politics, but I’m hoping the 2016 elections will be different story. Jeb may have the Bush name, but Hillary be more well known, and (generally speaking) Americans like Clintons more than Bushes. Shoot, my 80-year-old mother liked Bill Clinton, even after the whole “hide the cigar” hoo-rah. She said people should just leave him alone and let him do his job. Sadly, she didn’t live long enough to witness the junior Bush in office.

Well, I have to admit I’d rather see a non-Bush, non-Clinton candidate who wasn’t batshit crazy, but for 2016 I’ll take what I can get. Biden would be OK, but I doubt he’d do well against Hillary within the Democratic machine.

209 Lidane  Dec 18, 2014 4:21:44am

I am 1000% done with my employer. Fuck these people.

As I mentioned before, I recently joined the flagship team in my division. Well, as it turned out, the top sales performer on said team was cheating her way through the system. She would log every sales proposal as a final sale whether or not she actually sold the client on anything, artificially inflating the final numbers for the fiscal period. When the client we sell for finally started doing audits after having her around for, oh, a year, they noticed what was going on and she got fired. Of course, she gets fired right before the last fiscal period ends and we had to scramble just to make quota.

This is apparently her MO. I just found out she got fired from her new job for pulling the same shit, but that company has competent management who immediately noticed what she was doing and shitcanned her.

Now, management are suddenly riding our asses about every single sale every day, making sure everything is signed and properly entered into the CRM and accounted for. You know, because they were so dutiful about monitoring sales when cheating ex-employee was still around posting huge “sales” numbers. We’re slightly behind on our quota for this period and yesterday I hit my bullshit limit.

Between the condescending “sales coaching tips” email I got yesterday from one manager to the other VP treating my team like we’re five year olds, to these assholes getting mad when calls back up on the phone and then getting mad when I answer calls as an outbound sales lead, I’m done. They need to make up their fucking minds what they want. And they wouldn’t be acting this way if they’d done their goddamn jobs all along and noticed what cheating ex-employee was doing from the start instead of letting her get away with it for a fucking year and basking in the artificially inflated numbers.

Long, overly detailed story short, I can see my bosses laying the groundwork for me getting blamed for everything if we miss the sales quota for this period. And the next sales period will involve Christmas, the New Year, etc., making my window of making sales for the next fiscal that much narrower.

I’m done. Fuck these people. I am on the hunt for a new job and a more competent employer.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The Sony debacle over The Interview shows just how incompetent movie executives actually are.

They follow the pack. They’ll rush to do remakes and sequels on anything that shows a pulse at the international box office (US box take is now just a fraction of the overall gross on a movie, which is why you get crap like Transformers that did decent but not boffo box in the US, but raked in tons overseas, complete with Chinese tie-ins). I get the economics of those international tie-ins, but there’s a herd mentality among the studios. The major studios wont do edgy, let alone subversive because they don’t like to take chances.

The Interview had all the makings of being a stoner flick cult classic even before this hacking and cyber terrorist threats. It was never going to get big box office, and now no one will have the opportunity to decide for themselves to ignore the movie and see something else (like, say The Hobbit Part 3, which is likely to be a good, if ponderous movie that took a 200 page book and turned it into 9+ hours of screen time across 3 movies).

Now, it’s going to remain the Sony vaults (until some other intrepid hackers steal it and post it online).

I tweeted earlier that the hack story makes for an awesome CYA if the studio wanted to do a rewrite on a horrible movie, but the truth is probably a whole lot more mundane. The Sony execs simply are grasping at straws because of the hacks and they are desperate to regain control over their properties, so they pulled the movie.

Now, anyone with a computer could potentially threaten a network, studio, or theater chain not to run a movie or show they don’t like for whatever reason you can imagine. Every studio will now face these issues - just watch. If the villain in a movie isn’t a Nazi (and even then, I’m sure some Neo-Nazis or white supremacists will take umbrage), then the studios will consider pulling movies over cyber threats.

This is a direct affront to artistic expression and the right to make crappy movies (or even decent to good and even great movies). Perhaps that is ultimately the real reason Kim Jong Un doesn’t want this movie to see the light of day - he can’t get a copy of his own for the Glorious One’s personal collection. And if he can’t, then no one can.

My way of dealing with Sony’s issues? Watching Team America. F’Yeah!

We’ve gone from Team America F’Yeah to Sony’s F’ No. Pathetic.

The dress she’s wearing in that photo is actually among the more restrained ones she’s worn to events.

But the real kicker is who she’s married to.

A Nixon. John has tried his hands at politics and has been close with the Clintons for years, even if he ran as a GOPer in the primaries for Mayor last year (and lost).

Her front parts look synthetic.

re: #224 Dr. Matt

As LawHawk tweeted earlier regarding the movie: “But as CYA for pulling awful movie for rework? Brilliant”.

It the trailer is any indication of the comedic value of the movie, it’s going to a train wreck.

I’ve been wondering if this is some kind of a New Coke* publicity stunt.

*Still much conjecture about New Coke and if it was introduced just to create the massive buzz it did. When you are in the retentive advertising stage of a product just pushing what is known gets stale. Why not kick things up a bit by changing a recipe, some labels and get your customers to beg for your product while everyone talks about it. We may never know!

Pity history demonstrates otherwise. As my favourite writer puts it, “Capitalism was content under Hitler, happy under Mussolini, very happy under Franco and delirious under General Pinochet.” The cosy relationship it has with China is no surprise to me.

Democracy and capitalism can have a good working relationship, but they’ll never be friends.

Despite what is long believed. Democracy and capitalism are not always directly compatible. That quote gets at it but it also gets at why right wingers are able to tolerate certain forms of tyranny.

Vermont drops move to single-payer care

Going forward with a project four years in the making would require tax increases too big for the state to absorb, Shumlin said. The measure had been the centerpiece of the Democratic governor’s agenda and was watched and rooted for by single-payer health care supporters around the country.

Translation: We can’t get the wealthy and the business community to pay more taxes. They’d rather the peons die in pain than pay more taxes.

Cars today are way better and require less frequent maintenance than they did in the good old days. Even the cheapest ones last two or three times longer. Most cars back then were junked well before they reached 100,000 miles. Nowadays the interior usually wears out before the power train does.

All of those lovely old cars in Cuba are on the road because that’s all they have and all that they can afford. Many of them are American iron on the outside and a hodgepodge of East Bloc and European parts under the sheet metal. Do you cringe when you hear someone say: “They don’t make ‘em like they used too?”

I know I do. And for the very reasons you point out. And I would add better safety all around with crushable structures, disc brakes. Bodies last much longer too. I am damn glad they don’t make ‘em like they used too.

Most of the engines in cars up until the 80s were lucky to get 50,000 miles before they were blowing smoke, leaking fluids and wheezing.

I drive VWs and my ‘92 Golf was sold when it had 189,000 miles on it and it still ran great and looked pretty good too. I had a ‘99 GTi that I got to 192,000 miles and all I ever replaced on it was a catalytic converter and 1 complete brake job all around. Also had some issues with the gear shift cable, but overall, the car was bullet proof.

Has CCJ started looking for Alan Gross’ juvenile record?

300 lawhawk  Dec 18, 2014 7:30:33am

With renewed relations between US and Cuba, NJ State Troopers may actually get their chance for justice. Joanne Chesimard murdered a state trooper, injured a second trooper, was convicted and then managed to escape prison with help of the Black Liberation Army and then fled to Cuba. Castro has hosted her since the early 1980s.

There’s about 70 other suspected or convicted felons who have fled to Cuba to escape justice in the US. Their status is still up in the air so it will be interesting to see how the relationship develops and what steps will be taken going forward as far as releasing political prisoners beyond the initial batch of 53, opening lines of communication, etc.

The 53 released are from a list the US provided. The US also got back an intel agent who had been imprisoned by Cuba for 20 years.

A few years ago there was a documentary showing how the old stock is kept on the road. The key is distributed ‘repair streets’ where private shop owners specialize in one component. (They stay private by working on police and officials’ cars at a steep ‘discount’.) The crew focused on a guy whose 3-4 employees recover old brake shoes and recast the linings from asbestos powder and phenolic—by hand.

The crew asked: “Don’t you know that’s dangerous?” The boss said: “It’s not dangerous, it’s lethal. I have a family.” Over the credits, there was footage of the documentary crew giving the guy and the shop workers some full-face masks and HEPA filters they smuggled in. It might buy the workers some time.

I think people also start looking at iconic images a bit differently as the cultural norms shift.

One way to view it is a positive thing as the small woman stands up to the domineering men. Note that she is given a bit of isolation space even while closely surrounded. If this was a 14th century martyr or otherwise religious picture I’d expect her to have a halo or some sort of holy aura.

328 ObserverArt  Dec 18, 2014 7:46:52am

Ha! I was right. Rockwell did paint himself as one of the jurors.

I did a Google search for Rockwell The Jury and up came this link to his art with a page to The Jury:

Best Norman Rockwell Art - The Jury

Norman Rockwell decided to tackle the judicial process in this painting.

Ah, the smoke and tension filled jury room. Ah, the lone holdout juror. The lone holdout preventing a unanimous verdict is also the only woman.

Apparently all of the male jurors have voted the same verdict.

Drawing on all their powers of persuasion, they are trying to convince the lady to change her vote.

She is having nothing of it. Her body language shows that she has made up her mind and is not changing her vote.

I do not blame her. A jury can vote not just on the facts of the case, but also the law itself.

It is her duty to vote her conscience, just as it is the duty of all jury members.

This is another self-portrait since we can see Rockwell painted himself as one of the jurors.

We also see Louie Lamone, Rockwell’s friend, confidant and assistant, in the red shirt and jacket.

The female juror was modeled by Barbara Brooks. Her husband, Bob Brooks, was the model for the mustached man standing next to the sleeping juror.

Do you know names of any of the other jurors?

When I was in art school, one of my best friends was an illustrator and he was a Rockwell freak. He had a huge book of all of Rockwell’s great illustrations. I grew pretty familiar with Rockwell and I know his visage very well,

Adobe PDF would be a real god send if more of the people who use it for forms learned how to make the necessary fields fillable.

That too. It has all kinds of bells and whistles that can be added to documents. And those fields can also be used to report to a database or spreadsheet. Of course, with some work involved. ANd they keep adding stuff to it.

People sometimes don’t know how many functions some of the programs we use really have. I love Photoshop, but I swear, I have not used all the tools, filters, plug-ins etc, that are available. I doubt I have used 1/3 of them.

They don’t seem to remember what event took place that caused Australia to ban guns in 1996.

“The Australian Constitution prevents the taking of property without just compensation, so the federal government introduced the Medicare Levy Amendment Act 1996 to raise the predicted cost of A$500 million through a one-off increase in the Medicare levy. The gun buy-back scheme started on 1 October 1996 and concluded on 30 September 1997.[24] The buyback purchased and destroyed more than 631,000 firearms, mostly semi-auto .22 rimfires, semi-automatic shotguns and pump-action shotguns. Only Victoria provided a breakdown of types destroyed, and in that state less than 3% were military style semi-automatic rifles.”

wonder how that would compare to the US …

re: #387 The Vicious Babushka

The motor fuels tax will hit all drivers directly, and consumers indirectly with a hike in costs. A sales tax hits everyone, but poor disproportionately because it’s a greater percentage of their budget slated for items that are normally taxable.

That’s a huge conundrum with paying for infrastructure. Impose tax/fee on all users (user fees - tolls) or use broader based taxes (sales, income, property) to pay for roads. Both options are more likely to disproportionately cost the poor a greater percentage than someone who was wealthy or well off or comfortably in the middle class.

A surcharge on high income earners to cover infrastructure would help close, but not completely fund the road investments they’re talking about, but it wouldn’t add to the already high burden on the poor for roads.

This is all what happens when states and localities and the feds ignore infrastructure and problems add up over time. The massive road building from the 1950s-1960s leaves the US with infrastructure that is nearing the end of its design life, so it has to be replaced. That’s a bill that can’t be undone or ignored. Bridges fail. Water mains fail. Infrastructure has to be maintained, even if it’s hidden from view (like say a 2 mile stretch of the NYC water aqueducts that has to be replaced because of a 35 million gallon leak every day near the Hudson River). It isn’t cheap. But doing nothing is even more expensive.

CCJ’s entire life is a Gish gallop? Sounds about right to me.

The subscription model is catching on for 3D modeling and paint programs so I doubt that it’s going to go away. The price of both graphics and modeling software, even the price of upgrading, has risen to the point that many of us decided to make do with the version we had rather than pay dearly for a new version with a few added bells and whistles. The subscription model locks in the end user and guarantees the vendor a steady revenue stream with less sticker shock. Sucks for us, gravy for them.

I stopped trying to keep up and went open source (Blender) for my modeling. I use a relatively inexpensive (Under $200) program coupled with CS2 for texturing. That is more than adequate for a part-timer like me.

re: #425 ObserverArt

You have a great imagination!

I know you do needlepoint…have you ever tried to draw or paint? As with all basic art…it all starts with shapes. You seem to have a feel for what shapes can do. And your needlepoint work lets you get a feel for color and shapes and how they construct to make an image.

I have, in the past, dabbled in actual art.

I get immensely frustrated because nothing looks right when I put it on paper.

I like my stitching because it avoids this issue and comes out fantastic. :D

re: #426 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Sucks for us, gravy for them.

About sums it up. I use iPhoto, Pixelmator, or Gimp. None cost $600, which was bullshit to begin with.
