Paris City Council Votes to Sue Fox News Over False “No-Go Zones” Reports

The other shoe drops
Media • Views: 29,013

Last month, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced on CNN that she planned to sue Fox News for defaming the city of Paris with their false claims about Muslim-controlled “no-go zones.” (And I should add that conservatives all over the media are still repeating these false claims.)

Today in Paris, the City Council voted to go ahead with the lawsuit, which promises to provide much amusement to us connoisseurs of inadvertent right wing humor.

Lawyers for Fox News say they’ll fight the suit, of course, because fear-mongering lies are protected free speech in the US.

A law firm representing Fox News said the broadcaster would fight any lawsuit brought in Paris.

“The decision by the City of Paris to bring legal proceedings against a United States news organization is antithetical to free speech,” according to a statement provided by Fox News from lawyer Dori Ann Hanswirth of the Hogan Lovells law firm. “Fox News will invoke every protection afforded it under all applicable laws.”

I wonder what chargest/complaints the city of Paris will bring against Fox News…

I’d think the key is where they sue. Hopefully, it’ll be the UK. They are brutal on bullshit.

Most European countries have limits to what you can say as a news organization or as a broadcaster.
Mind you, it is hard to run into them, but they’re there.

6 RealityBasedSteve  Feb 17, 2015 2:27:16pm

So…. getting called on outright lies and falsehoods is “antithetical to free speech” in their eyes? Well I guess that in that case there would be nothing wrong with me saying that they are bottom feeding scum who aren’t worthy to clean the spittoons in a brothel.

But that would be a falsehood, because it’s well known that no self respecting brothel would lower their standards to that level.

French law dating back to 1881 says insulting the honor of a French body or person can be grounds for filing a defamation suit. Which is why Fox is likely going to try to get this case heard in a US court.

8 Backwoods_Sleuth  Feb 17, 2015 2:27:49pm

This is from a commenter over at Gawker:

The important thing to note is that they’re not suing Fox under US Law (because it would probably go nowhere and they’ve probably been informed of this by the French Ambassador in Washington).

The lawsuit is most likely in French Court (which has a lower standard of proof for libel cases than US courts, and less restrained by Free Speech statutes like courts in the US are) and I also wouldn’t be surprised if a similar suit had been, or will be filed in European (EU) court (Which is actually more serious and a bigger deal because that ruling wouldn’t just be binding to France but to EU member states).

More than likely Fox’s ability report and operate (effectively) in France is what would be effected, with broader implications in the rest of Europe which is why they were so quick to come out with that apology last week—which you never EVER see them do in the US even when they’ve been proven patently wrong in their reporting by THEIR OWN news reporting, sometimes.

Britain and Birmingham was probably never going to sue—despite Rupert Murdoch’s shaky relationship with the government there over the phone hacking scandal, due to similar high standards for libel suits (which is why the tabloids there put the US Tabloids to shame), and also because Murdoch has a lot of connections (read: business interests) there, but the situation is vastly different in France.

A mystery is brewing on Mars: Amateur astronomers spotted enormous plumes erupting off the Red Planet’s surface, leaving scientists puzzled.

More than 155 miles (250 kilometers) high and hundreds of miles across, the baffling plumes were spotted by amateur astronomers in the spring of 2012. The plumes reflect sunlight, which means they could be made of water ice, carbon dioxide ice or dust. But clouds made of those materials would be hard to explain with current models of the Martian atmosphere, scientists say.

In one of my vampire stories a redneck called my main character a “Fucking cheese eater.” Georges found it amusing as he hadn’t eaten any cheese in over two centuries. In my world vampires can’t eat any human food. It sits in their stomachs until it rots.

Then the redneck and his buddies tried to rape his lady friend, who he had turned a few months previously.

Not wanting to take a backseat to Oklahoma and its “AP courses are of Satan” bills, Mississippi is devoting its time to IMPORTANT legislation like HB 132, nicknamed the “Jesus Take the Wheel Act”, that would exempt churches from commercial driver’s license requirements.

Current law requires CDL-certified drivers for any vehicle transporting more than 16 passengers, including the driver. The bill would amend that law to exempt church buses designed to carry 30 passengers or less.

Mississippi state Rep. Gene Alday (R) publicly apologized on Tuesday for lamenting that he came from a place where “all blacks are getting food stamps” for not working.

Of course, FIRST Alday complained to the newspaper that the interview portrayed him in an unflattering manner.

But at least he didn’t say it was satire, so there’s that. (That’s two for Mississippi in just a few minutes—this one and the “Jesus Take the Wheel” bill—come on South Carolina, you’re lagging!

I kinda whimpered and had to fiercely resist the urge to just draw the shades, crawl back under the covers, and curl up into a fetal position to see if maybe I could sleep through the entire day, then get up and try again tomorrow.

I think she has a good point:

Could we please not forgive Sarah Palin? She is an unrepentant nightmare

Fey’s Palin impression was a big hit for the show back in 2008, got marvellous ratings, and will long be remembered as a seminal SNL moment - but not, as one might think, because Sarah Palin was some wacky, harmless goofball destined to be a delightful footnote in the annals of election history. No. Nope.

No. People loved those Tina Fey/Sarah Palin sketches because Sarah Palin is a terrifying, anti-intellectual, anti-choice, gun-toting ideologue who came within a hair’s breadth of one of the most powerful political offices in the world, a dystopian potentiality that could have tangibly affected the lives of literally billions of people…

In short: Fey’s Palin impression wasn’t important because Palin is trivial and amusing. It was important because Palin is anything but. And we need to remember that.

So please. Everyone. I am begging you. Do not participate in or encourage the aw-shucks redemption of Sarah Palin - or any other unrepentant nightmare person, for that matter. She does not deserve it. She is the same person she was in 2008 (though seemingly even more desperate and eager to pander) and she is still actively trying to make the world worse.

Copenhagen police confirm identity of attacks gunman

france24.com

COPENHAGEN (AFP) -
Copenhagen police late Tuesday confirmed the identity of the suspected gunman behind the weekend’s double shooting as 22-year-old Omar El-Hussein.

“Police also said that in his first attack, on Saturday, he had unsuccessfully tried to use several entrances to a cultural centre that was hosting a debate on Islam and free speech attended by controversial Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks.

(snip)

“El-Hussein, a Danish-born man of Palestinian origin, was killed in a shootout with police early Sunday after opening fire at the cultural centre, killing a filmmaker, after which he shot dead a Jewish man outside a synagogue.” More

It didn’t end well for them.

Yeah, rednecks haven’t really put up a good fight since the Battle of Palmito Ranch in 1865. This is generally regarded as the last battle of the Civil War and was fought in Texas nearly a month after Appomattox Courthouse. It involved a Confederate force repelling a rather ill-advised attempt by Union Colonel Theodore H. Barrett to capture their camp. There is some speculation that Barrett had ordered the attack just because he saw it as his last chance to see real combat.
There had been a lot of firebrand rhetoric in Texas after Appomattox urging Confederate soldiers to “fight on boys,” to the general derision of the bedragged soldiers. The latter were mostly just waiting for Union troops to show up with food and rail passes home before surrendering.

The bill would amend that law to exempt church buses designed to carry 30 passengers or less.

dailykos.com

Because, hey, what could go wrong taking 30 little church-going kids to an event with a non-certified driver? This will end well

Considering how their god likes killing kids - it’s kind of his thing - and judging by how many horrific “it’s such a tragedy!” high-body-count church bus accidents I’ve seen on the news just here in DFW in the last few years, I’d say that’s pretty much asking for mass casualties.

It’s classic bully behavior—they’re only brave when they have you outnumbered. There was this group of girls in high school that used to try to bully me on the bus (isn’t there always?) but my mom had told me years before that the way to deal with that was to catch each one alone. I did. It worked like a charm. From then on they either studiously ignored me or were at least civil.

Richard Anderson: That is categorically false. And it’s a great irony to have the UAE from the Arabian Peninsula talk about that, given the fact that our industry was really shocked by the terrorism of 9/11, which came from terrorists from the Arabian Peninsula. That caused us to go through a massive restructuring. And in the United States our restructuring process is transparent and there is no government subsidy. And in fact there were billions of dollars of equity and unsecured debt that were wiped out through that process.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were citizens of Saudi Arabia. Saudia, the state airline of Saudi Arabia, does not compete at the same level as Etihad, Emirates, or Qatar Airways. Etihad Airways was founded in 2003.

American-based airline companies will do anything to deflect from their horrible customer service which is costing them big time. Who in their right mind would want to fly a US-based airline when international airlines offer superior service?

What the hell does this “caliphate” do for work? What’s the economic plan for their little Nickel-Pisspot Kingdom of Blood? Do they tax the people who haven’t been murdered yet? What happens when trade dries up? Drugs, oil, and guns?

Man, Bush 43 didn’t just fuck the country, he fucked the entire future. Nobody liked Saddam, but look what’s happened since his little adventure tore the lid off the place.

Watched “Freedom Summer” on PBS. (Actually, I missed the first 1/2 hour, but it is on Amazon Prime, so will catch the rest.) Same people that did “Freedom Riders” a few years ago. So good; so sad that some of the same fucking things are still going on today with voter suppression.

All the tough-talking gun-slinging “patriots” running their mouths these days wouldn’t have lasted 10 minutes facing the crap those volunteers and the people in Mississippi did just to be allowed to vote.

Johnson was a real ass about the challenge at the 1964 convention by the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party delegation. He called out all of his minions, called in all of his favors, and while the most persuasive speaker on the challenge team (a sharecropper named Fannie Lou Hamer) was speaking live, Johnson called a press conference, so the networks cut away from her speech. His press conference was to announce that it had been 9 months since the Kennedy assassination.

I guess he redeemed himself by signing the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

Highly recommend it if you haven’t watched it.
