Ken Silverstein’s Tell-All Piece on First Look Media: Where Journalism Goes to Die

The ultimate nightmare job?
Media • Views: 36,497

When Ken Silverstein was hired by the Greenwald/Omidyar project First Look Media, he thought it would be his dream job; complete freedom to cover the stories he wanted to cover.

But the dream turned into a nightmare almost immediately, with editorial incompetence, bureaucratic infighting, and an extreme libertarian/left ideological agenda that militated against telling the truth. The title of Silverstein’s article says it all: Where Journalism Goes to Die.

Probably the most damning part of this inside look at First Look is Silverstein’s description of what happened when their coverage of the popular podcast Serial ran afoul of the dogmatic attitudes of Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald:

Given the viral success of the show, our follow-up stories were a huge success—possibly the biggest thing The Intercept has ever published. They were, though, hugely controversial inside our organization. Why wouldn’t a huge editorial success be celebrated inside The Intercept? Because we were siding with The Man.

Now I believe the American justice system is badly flawed and often racist, but in this instance, I firmly believe, the system worked. I believe Adnan Syed murdered Hae Min Lee and was rightly prosecuted for it.

But I came to realize that the system working correctly—and the right people going to jail—isn’t a good narrative to tell at The Intercept.

Publishing the Serial stories was a huge headache: There were constant delays and frustrations getting them out, even after it became clear they were drawing huge traffic. Our internal critics believed that Natasha and I had taken the side of the prosecutors—and hence the state. That support was unacceptable at a publication that claimed it was entirely independent and would be relentlessly adversarial towards The Man. That held true even in this case, when The Man successfully prosecuted a killer and sent him to jail.

Some colleagues, like Jeremy Scahill, were upset by the first installment of Natasha’s interviews with Jay, the state’s flawed-but-convincing key witness, and our co-bylined two-part interview with the lead prosecutor, Kevin Urick, both of whom had refused to speak to Sarah Koenig for her Serial podcast. Jeremy even threatened to quit over the second installment, according to two of my colleagues who witnessed what they described as his “temper tantrum” in the New York office. He told them he couldn’t believe that we’d so uncritically accepted the state’s view of the murder—even though our stories were backed up by our own research, our unique reporting and our reading of court documents. One day at the office, frustrated, Natasha wrote “Team Adnan” on a sign on Jeremy’s office door.

Quell surprise.

The insufferable dudebros over there hated that the Serial story drew more eyeballs than any of their paranoid boogieman self-righteous bullshit ever did.

Scahill’s temper tantrum is especially amusing, I am shocked that he took time off from his not writing anything to chime in.

While I doubt that Putin is behind it (it’s simply not in his interests), there are plenty of crazy Putin supporters out there. If one of those was behind it and if he is a powerful figure (think: Ramzan Kadyrov), everything will be done to falsify the investigation.

It’s irritating the way the Mac Store keeps Apple from innovating some really obvious, long overdue shit. There’s no reason that Grab needs to only save .tiff files, or that saving Window and Timed Screen grabs can’t preserve the original program mouse tool icon. Just because some crap indie developer wants two bucks a pop for the added functionality is not a valid reason for Apple to avoid obvious functionality.

I blame the goddamned broken patent system.

Charles, I think this is another section of the story that stands out:

On Wednesday, I got an email from First Look asking me to Fedex the company my corporate laptop. I told them to tell me what is it worth and they can deduct it from what they owe me in expenses and vacation time. But what I love is that a company that opposes NSA spying apparently wants a “disgruntled” former employee’s laptop so they can see what’s on it.

Maybe he should send them a picture of components from a much older computer as proof that the laptop was “destroyed.”

That piece on First Look is really good and I wonder if Pierre will do anything about it because there apparently a non-disparage agreement and Pierre comes across looking like a complete egotistical, navel gazing, nit picking moron.

But at First Look, we were never able to be fearless. We couldn’t do anything, because we spent so much time in pointless meetings and being slowed down, when we wrote anything, by a lack of support from management and the dire shortage of editors to actually oversee and work with the writers. We were just lost.

Reading this story and how out of touch Pierre is with the monster he’s created reminds me of the stories about Ion Storm under John Romero. He was giving interviews about how awesome it was to be in charge of a game company run by game designers, while said company was burning through millions in investor dollars without anything to show for it. re: #27 goddamnedfrank

“Turbulent Priest.” Putin didn’t have to order it directly for him to effectively have put it in motion.

Could go without him saying anything too.

Let’s take Kadyrov as an example. He is known both for death threats (e.g. against Khodorkovsky, Putin’s enemy) and for absolute impunity (he is known to have been behind the assassination attempt on Isa Yamadayev - there is an official video/transcript of an interrogation of the failed killer who names Kadyrov, yet the verdict states that the murder attempt was ordered by “unknowns”). He’s “chaotic evil”, in comparison to Putin’s “almost lawful evil”. He’s not that bright too, so he might think that such a thing would appeal to the boss. So I could easily imagine that someone like this could have done it.

51 HappyWarrior  Feb 27, 2015 3:38:46pm

What’s really pathetic is you had a group of GOPers including the 2012 VP nominee and the present majority leader meeting together on President Obama’s inauguration day to come up with ways to obstruct him and make him as weak as possible. This is the party that claims country first, this is the party that claims to be more patriotic than the others, and yet they did shit like this. And that’s not even mentioning the present majority leader’s stated goal to make the president a one term president. Really the GOP hasn’t acted like a loyal opposition at all these past six years. They’ve acted like a party that views the president as their enemy and their actions and choices in candidates show ti.

The GOP clown car continues as they try to blame the White House and Democrats for the failure to pass a continuing resolution on DHS funding. This is all on the GOP.

They can’t do math. They can’t count the votes.

They can’t be trusted with national security given that they’re willing to shut down the DHS, which includes TSA and border security. This is what they want to do because they’re throwing a hissy fit over the President’s prerogatives on immigration.

The slash and burn GOP is in serious need of comeuppance. And I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. The rank and file seem perfectly content with shutdowns (see 2013) and sequestration, because they’re all for shutting down government and its very ability to act. They don’t want government; they want to burn it all down - their actions do speak louder than words.

This is what they’re doing.

I mean if he weren’t palling around with Putin’s regime, I’d understand the romanticizing of him somewhat but the fact is he’s a hypocrite. So is Greenwald too for that matter.

101 Nyet  Feb 27, 2015 4:16:24pm

I see Greenwald finally went with Putin’s “fascists in Ukraine” line. While it is true that there are some neo-Nazis fighting on the Ukrainian side (“Azov”), and that sending arms to Ukraine would also entail arming them, the Lend-Lease entailed helping Stalin’s army, while being fully cognizant of Stalin’s crimes. The anti-Hitler Allies were no angels (even forgetting about racism, segregation, etc.), but they fought against a greater evil.

Now i keeps wanting to push 5 on me, just have to keep telling it “NO!!! Bad Android”. All my installed apps reinstalled, now just trying to remember how I had my screens set up.

Hoping that 5.1 (due next month) is an improvement, it couldn’t be worse. The problem is that I liked some of the features, but it was just too unstable. (like me sometimes)

This whole First Look Media/Intercept story is amusing.

If I think back when all that was being announced, a great many Green Footballers were saying this exact sort of outcome would happen. I remember comments about all those egos and strong cowboy personalities under the guide of the Mighty Greenwald would never work out.

Funny how a group of people on the outside can figure it out just judging on what we read of their work and about themselves. And then all the talent and money right there inside have no clue to the eventual problems of something as basic as working together and professionally.

I guess all that ego/personality and money can be blinding.

“Where so damn good, how could we be any less than great?”

That type thinking was their first mistake.

Lasers Could Boost Engine Efficiency by 27%

Unless your life is way more exciting than mine, most of your daily explosions probably take place inside the engine of your car. In a conventional internal combustion engine, a mixture of fuel and air explodes to push down a piston, converting chemical energy into mechanical energy. The explosion is triggered by spark plugs that live at the top of the combustion chamber, using sparks to ignite the fuel air mixture. This works fine, but it’s not particularly efficient, since the ignition point is at one edge of the chamber. Engines move fast enough, and the combustion cycle is short enough, that the entire mixture doesn’t have a chance burn completely, leading to unburned fuel, which is bad for both engine efficiency and the environment.

Lasers can fix this problem by igniting the fuel in the middle of the combustion chamber instead of at the outer edge. This results in a much more complete burn, so you get more bang for your buck, literally. Also, lasers can be fired with nanosecond timing (multiple times per combustion cycle if necessary), and even targeted at different areas of the combustion chamber. The increased energy output allows for leaner fuel-air mixtures, increasing overall fuel efficiency by 27 percent while lowering emissions. Really, it’s a much better way to do things. Which should not be surprising. Because lasers.

So, that’s the deal - the Speaker needs Democrats to keep DHS open. The GOP stands opposed to national security. That’s the end result of opposing funding DHS.

The GOP can play politics over the immigration position, but they can’t even proffer a bill that passes muster with the GOP led Senate, let alone their own chamber, so they’ve got nothing except shrill opposition to anything that functions.

This isn’t dysfunctional. Dysfunction suggests an attempt at function.

This is active opposition to governance.

Belated reply, on a dead thread, as usual, but this one hit home. I remember very well when we lost Pat Troughton, and no, it wasn’t cool. I wasn’t at at that con but had friends who were, and it was bloody hell for the folks running the con. They had to swallow their grief and shock; tell the attendees that Pat was in hospital but not that he was gone. They had to get hold of his wife, make arrangements, deal with the painful practicalities and all the while keep a con running. And then when they could make the announcement, a lot of the fen were pissed that they hadn’t been told immediately, not understanding that his family needed to be the first to know. Not fun at all, living through it.

Lovely blokes, both Pat & Jon — was fortunate enough to meet ‘em both, miss ‘em still. But at least I have a few pics and many very fond memories of panels and cabarets and the escalating water pistol wars.
