Mind-Blowing Shredfest by Andy Timmons: “Headed for the Ditch”
I don’t know what to say about this live performance by the Andy Timmons trio, except that the picking technique on display is absolutely ridiculous.

I didn’t like Timmons when he was in Danger Danger, mostly because they were local hair band knuckleheads who were around the NY scene way too long before getting their deal.
He’s more than redeemed himself with the post-DD stuff. His chops are considerable, and all the more impressive being played on a Tele and not some pointy guitar.

Overall I agree but put “Grandma got run over” in #4.
The only Christmas music I can tolerate outside of the carols at church during the actual Christmas season (AFTER advent, thankyewverymuch) any more is the Mannheim Steamroller stuff. Schlocky and corny quite often but 1) the band is enjoying themselves more than most of the rote performances we get from “stars” and 2) NO VOCALS! That alone shoots them to the top of the chart for me.

re: #59 Stanley Sea Toujours
Bookmarked. I will need all my brain to read.
I’m reading it a piece at a time, because even the author admits it’s not an interview per se - more like a monologue. As he puts it -
I hope it won’t sound too much like dereliction of duty but when the subject of an interview is as garrulous and opinionated and indiscreet and just plain entertaining as Noel Gallagher is, the job of the journalist is simply to turn up with a fully charged Dictaphone and press “record”.
There’s little need for searching questions or penetrating insights, and good luck with trying to get a word in even if you had arrived armed with those. (I’d had a bash, of course, as you do, but I needn’t have bothered.)
Better to sit back, keep quiet, and enjoy the show. It’s not that one is a non-participant exactly, just that the vacancy is for an audience member and the requirement is to nod, laugh or grimace at the right moments.
Only a handful of times in the two hours and more we spent talking did I - gently - attempt to steer the conversation, to pick Noel up on some small point of fact, or challenge an opinion.
“Honestly,” he said, exasperated, after perhaps the third such timid intervention, “you’re like my missus, you are. You’re interrupting! You’re putting me in a corner!”
“Sorry,” I said, but he’d already started on the next anecdote, so he didn’t hear me.
Still. Noel is the most quote-worthy rock star since Lennon IMO.

Every 10 or so comments, someone will point out:
It seems like Ben Carson supporters don’t understand the meaning of the word parody…
or
Um, did anybody actually read this article? It was printed in a parody issue of the Yale Daily News. Parody? meaning not true? And the troubled Carson holds this up as proof? And right wingers believe a parody is reality. Well, admittedly that part doesn’t surprise me. (And by the way, even the ‘facts’ in this story are the opposite of Carson’s story. Apparently nobody left, but several students fooled by the parody showed up — and maybe Carson was one of them.
These comments garner no response, no rebuttal—it’s just back to:

My least favorite traditional carol is The First Noel. The words sound like some dithering old biddy came up with them on a rainy afternoon. The song is already repeating itself before it makes it to the end of the first verse. Really rotten poetry in every verse.

Dole came from the Gerry Ford school of politics. By today’s measure of Republicans, Gerry Ford is a communist. Ford was probably the last of the Republicans who grew up under Eisenhower’s political dominance.
I strongly believe that the continued urbanization of America has led to a rural-urban divide in American society that we see playing out today. In most cases, the wingnut Republicans draw their popularity from low population density parts of any state. And even in megalopoli it is the large-tract suburban areas that are wingnut havens (such as Orange county here in SoCal.)
Added to the heap of change is the fall of the old Protestant worldview in light of modernity. That is really hitting hard in pockets around this country. Carson, Cruz, etc. milk these poor folk for all their dissonance will allow.

The only thing that could possibly be even worse is a 9/11 Christmas song.
Word used to describe the syrupy sweet e-mails that are mass-mailed to unwilling participants. Usually involve, puppies, kitties, children with disabilities, puppies and kitties with disabilities, and Jesus. Generally end with, “Pass this along 2 as many ppl as u can!!!11!!1!”

I still remember my good old parents and their old school ways of getting a Christmas tree and we’d decorate it either the evening before Christmas Eve or Christmas eve morning. And the tree would be down day after New Years if it was up that long. And that was the season. It was great. Everyone take off for Election Day? Is everything closed? Grocery Stores? Malls? Gas Stations? Skeleton crews at hospitals? If everything isn’t closed then it is just another day off for Gvt. employees?

So let me see if I understand this…. Somebody discovered that if you just call up Obama’s alma maters and ask for his academic records, they’ll refuse to give them to you. Of course, they’ll refuse to give you anybody’s academic records—but they should give you Obama’s or it’s a nefarious plot of some kind? Is that it?

If that’s what it takes to give people the time to vote, I’m ok with that. Some people have to wait hours to vote.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to keep the polls open 24 hours a day for 2 or 3 days?

I don’t see that happening. I see a national day off before voting for three days. I can’t envision anyone voting for that. And this has to be a national effort, something states can’t go around.
I do like the 24 hour thought. That would help shift workers.
re: #150 WhatEVs
Giving more time to vote means more time for chicanery and fraud to occur.
I’m really not feeling good about the election next year. Hillary will get the DNC nod. And Bernie supporters will just stay home and not vote for her. This will lead to a nutcase in the Whitehouse.
re: #150 WhatEVs
Good ideas but not workable for some places. Even here in Philly it is very difficult to get anyone to work at the polls. Even with a 13 hour day (polls are open 7am to 8 pm) lots of people say they cannot get to the polls.
Next year after Obummer declares martial law and cancels the election, maybe we can finally win the War on Christmas for good.

re: #151 Eric The Fruit Bat

I can’t, no won’t, accept that as a reason to not give people more time to vote. If fraud occurs time isn’t going to change it. Assholes will plan to do that. Not offering citizens every chance and opportunity to vote for that reason punishes the good and rewards bad players on a bet that additional time might allow those bad behaviors.

There’s should be a national law requiring all states to implement vote by mail on demand, with no excuse or pretext required. Also a law stating all state voter ID requirements for federal elections should be deemed fulfilled by either presenting ID, or if lacking an ID applying for one and being photographed at the time of registration.

The meme that says he had “the best SAT scores in 20 years in Detroit”?
Lie.
If he had perfect SAT scores, if he got a 1600 — there’s several dozen Detroiters every year with that score. My (public) high school in a LA suburb, out of a graduating class of 400, had 8 perfect scores. It was a better than average school, with higher than average test scores, but not outrageously so. A full 1% of test-takers Every. Single. Year. get perfect scores.

Voter pre-registration should (for citizens only obviously) be done as part of getting a Social Security number, when you turn 18 the registration activates. That would track automatically with job, school financial aid, disability. Then the ID requirement, if any could be fulfilled through one of several options. A ballot could then be authorized by signature as is done now, or to remove the subjectivity of having some asshole at the precinct deciding if your signature matches voters could pre-validate their physical absentee ballots via text message by texting in a code from the ballot stub from an authorized cell phone number, plus a personal PIN. Alternatively they could go online when they receive their ballot and authorize it via code plus a PIN from a validated email account.
These methods would still involve the same auditable paper ballot, but would eliminate all but the most disingenuous concerns over vote fraud. Ignoring the fact the pretty much all current concerns of vote fraud are already disingenuous.

The biker salute means ‘two wheels down’. You’d have to use four fingers for a Civic. It isn’t just for the tough guys. I get it when I’m riding on highways with my 300cc scooter with my nerdy full helmet (although usually not from the tough guys).

I don’t get the reluctance to conclude it was a bomb. The only alternative explanation looks even worse for Russia, that the plane came down because of deferred maintenance caused by not paying their mechanics.
Kogalymavia, the Russian company whose charter plane crashed in Egypt last weekend, killing all 224 people on board, had not paid its staff in two months, according to employment watchdog group Rostrud (link in Russian) and local media reports.
The bomb finding is a godsend for Putin’s government because now they can blame it on Egypt instead of their own fucked up handling of the Russian economy.

I can easily understand how Westfalia van drivers would wave at each other. I’m kind of surprised that other rust-bucket Volvo drivers (‘92 940 GL) don’t wave at me (my wife mostly drives our new Civic). Mostly, they seem to be stitching leather patches on their tweed jackets as they drive.

I never been one who gets too excited when somebody plays their instrument like Timmons in the video. If you watch the how-to video I posted, the chord changes are pretty basic and the fretting is also pretty basic. The trick is to do all of it really fast and accurately, which is a matter of practice, practice, practice. Partially muting the strings with the heel of his hand is a nice touch.
I don’t practice enough, so that’s why my guitar playing is snail slow.
As for the 1/64th notes, listen to some baroque period music sometime. Those guys loved 64th notes! Long runs of them.

Even 55 years ago, when we had to sing The Little Drummer Boy in choir—well, we didn’t have the phrase “Gag me with a spoon”, but we would have used it if we had. The most disgustingly mawkish thing ever!
To be fair, UK indie band Low did an agreeable drone version of the song in 1999:
