Well gang, I’m off to bed. With a little bit of luck we’ll finish up the inventory tomorrow at the shop (the counting is done, it’s just a matter of reconciling it against what the computer SAYS we have). So far no real surprises, like last year when I found a 1300 dollar regulator set in the back of a storage bin that wasn’t even listed as being in the system.
All things being equal, I’d rather be back down in Florida with my Dad on the golf course.

Btw, I was an eyewitness to the ‘68 Democratic Convention riots in Chicago. My mother was a delegate and the folks took me along in the hope that I would see the populist process in all its glory. I saw a lot but it was scarcely glorious. In the convention hall, the establishment shut down dissidents, beat up reporters, and muscled Hubert Humphrey into the nomination. Outside, Mayor Daley’s police goons launched an epic pogrom against anti-war demonstrators. I can still smell the tear gas. The experience had a lot to do with my decades-long defection to the Republicans, the sainted memory of my great-uncle Sam Rayburn notwithstanding. I actually remember thinking, “Well, Uncle Sam, sir, if you could see this, you might turn Republican too.” My recovery started at the time of the Clinton impeachment, which I thought was a farce, and accelerated when the Bush/Cheney invasion failed to turn up any WMD in Iraq.

There really are any of a number of nightmare scenarios for the GOP right now, going into the general election. Trump could drop out and go third party, he could drop out and refuse to endorse, he could win the nomination and then select a similarly loony running mate, there could be a brokered convention, etc.

Calls for Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s ouster—and arrest—are growing after internal emails showed that his high-level staffers were aware of lead poisoning in Flint’s public water supply six months before the administration declared a state of emergency.
According to the newly-released emails, which were obtained by NBC News, Snyder’s chief of staff at the time, Dennis Muchmore, wrote to an unnamed high-level health department staffer: “I’m frustrated by the water issue in Flint.”

I’ve thought all along that Snyder was the worst of the worst of Republican governors. After seeing what that piece of shit did to Benton Harbor, I couldn’t believe he flew under the radar and escaped the scorn he so rightfully deserved. Ugh.
I gotta vent before I go to bed because this insanity is really starting to get to me.
During the Clinton and Bush years I remember when we used to have real discussions about policy. I was a young conservative then, solidly so.
Then Obama got elected and conservatives went into the first stage of grief, denial. Then Obamacare got passed and the right wing just lost their shit. Every paleoconservative, wacko libertarian, and neo-fascist nutball crawled out of the woodwork AND THEY WON’T GO AWAY. In fact the GOP keeps moving closer and closer to them. And no one talks about policy anymore, only politics.
I stopped being a conservative a few years ago - because I realized Obamacare is a good deal for just about everyone, because the strong Federal response to the Great Recession was the correct one, and because human AGW is real and we have to do something starting now. But mostly because I hate the freak show the GOP has become. I guess they were always like that, but more dormant. Maybe Fox has given them a platform to let their freak flag fly, so now we know what they are.
And now the GOP front-runner is the most loathsome, amoral, load-mouthed, no principles bully imaginable. And the GOP is eating it up, in spite of the fact Trump hasn’t uttered one true thing, and every single statement he’s said about what he would do as president isn’t going to happen. AND IT’S SO OBVIOUS, how can these Trump supporters be so stupid? How can any human being be that stupid?

It’s worst when you consider that virtually every governor they touted as a contender is being buried under scandals or the results of their own ruthless adherence to party doctrine.

It’s criminal negligence at the very least. His manager was informed of the risk before he made the decision, and instead chose to override the city council and roll the dice with people’s health and safety. Snyder’s people had ample opportunity to intervene and mitigate the harm, but instead decided to condone the ongoing poisoning of an entire city’s water supply.
This is like General Ripper’s insane fever dream, only it’s real and instead of a communist plot it was a staunchly conservative Republican Governor that engaged in a conspiracy to contaminate the precious bodily fluids of tens of thousands of the citizens he was elected to serve.

Sheboygan County sheriff defends hiring of convicted killer
The Sheboygan County sheriff is standing by his decision to hire a convicted killer as a radio technician, despite questions in the community about whether it is appropriate for someone with that type of record to be working for law enforcement.
“I’m not going to throw him under the bus. I take responsibility for bringing him on,” Sheriff Todd Priebe said of the technician, Rafael George Macias. “If I had known the gruesome details, I may not have taken him on, but what he brings to our agency is nothing but positive.”
Macias was 20 and an airman at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas when he pleaded guilty to killing and dismembering his live-in girlfriend, Julia Adams, also 20, in 1977, according to news reports from the time. Police linked Macias to the crime after he reported her missing, the reports say.
Macias later told police he strangled Adams out of jealousy and put her body into a bathtub, cut it in half with a hacksaw and stuffed it into an Air Force packing crate. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison but was released after 13 after being given credit for good behavior.

Sheboygan County sheriff defends hiring of convicted killer
The Sheboygan County sheriff is standing by his decision to hire a convicted killer as a radio technician, despite questions in the community about whether it is appropriate for someone with that type of record to be working for law enforcement.
Priebe said Macias had been working on the sheriff’s department radio system as contractor for about 10 years before Priebe took office and hired him in 2011. Macias was upfront about his conviction when he was approached about the job, Priebe said. He was not asked about the details at the time.
So the guy was already working on their gear and the sheriff knew about the murder conviction, but didn’t ask for details.

I would suggest that Donald Trump was never in Ronald Reagan’s class. Reagan had plenty faults but for every James Watt he had a James Baker. I truly believe that the Ronald Reagan of 1980 would kick Donald Trump’s ass all over town. Reagan at least had some semblance of an idealistic vision of America, but Trump sees nothing but darkness and hate.

Reagan had an optimistic outlook that covered up much of the nastiness of his actual policies. There’s no such veneer among the GOPers today. They are an angry hateful lot who think America isn’t great, but could be great again if only they’re elected and slash and burn government as we know it.
Never mind that the GOP policies would only make the economy far worse - drive up the debt - and shift tax burdens from the rich to everyone else.
When even Rubio and Jeb’s tax plans result in ballooning deficits and tax burden shifting, you should know your party is off the rails (they know it, they just don’t care).
Add to that the insane delight taken in pushing ACA repeal bill after ACA repeal bill that would do nothing except hike the deficit (the CBO is explicit in this - any repeal would increase the deficit $137 billion through 2025). They don’t care.
That’s being fiscally responsible? The GOP is anything but. And their followers don’t know or care that they’re being lied to.

“Marketplace” reported this morning that there was significant manipulation. Big investors had severe limits on how much they can sell (and in some cases have to give two-week’s notice).
The government does not want a laissez-faire marketplace, because most trading on China’s markets are by individual investors, who buy and sell in the hope of making quick pofits (or prevent serious losses). That makes the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets more volatile than the NYSE, for example, where trading is dominated by institutional investors that are less skittish.
Besides, China wants to look like it has a stable economy, given that nearly everyone outside China is saying it’s going to collapse.

From what I’m gathering regarding the incidents in Köln (and a few smaller-scale ones elsewhere in Germany), the shit’s getting ready to hit the fan. There’s already talk of German vigilante groups forming up in Düsseldorf to “protect” people.
The mood is getting ugly, made worse by accusations of a cover-up on the part of the police.
City authorities identified some suspects in the Cologne New Year’s Eve attacks as asylum seekers from Syria, detaining or questioning some of them, according to reports by local newspaper “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” and national daily “Die Welt,” which published an online preview of investigations by its “Welt am Sonntag” Sunday paper.
According to the newspapers’ reports, citing officers on duty on New Year’s Eve, officials checked the IDs of at least 100 people present at Cologne’s central station on December 31 after their behavior became conspicuous. Seventy-one people were identified, 11 people were remanded into custody and 32 criminal complaints were registered, according to the Welt am Sonntag (WamS) report.
“There were, quite to the contrary of what was said publicly, identity checks on numerous people,” the WamS quoted an unnamed officer as saying. “Most of them were recently-arrived asylum seekers.”
The first internal police report on the event - a so-called “Wichtige Ereignis Meldung” (“important event announcement”) - spoke of a crowd mainly of “North African and Arab” origin. According to the Kölner Stadt-anzeiger, the officer leading the team at the station wanted the report to include mention of the Syrians and asylum seekers, but the senior officer writing the “WE-Meldung” decided not to, saying it would be “politically awkward.”

Up to now, people have been tolerant and even welcoming to refugees; if they were upset, it was with the politicians and authorities who failed to see the extent of the crisis until it was on top of them.
But now the integrity of German womanhood is under threat, and that calls for a gut-level reaction!

My favorite and this goes back to what I remember from moonbat types in the Bush years but it’s been recycled- HE’S GOING TO CANCEL ELECTIONS. Nevermind the fact that Obama has never shown a desire to want to get rid of the term limit amendment (which a certain Republican president who was senile and probably did have Alheimers did want to gut) or the fact that Obama’s definitely fed up with right wing crap and looking forward to retirement.

re: #220 Blind Frog Belly White
Seen another story about how Daesh trying to figure out how to fire missiles and other high tech weapons.
Considering that the US was at war in Iraq for more than a decade firing off countless tons of munitions, and some of it invariably was lost, stolen, or never accounted for, it’s not unreasonable that terrorists could get their hands on some of the technology. Problem for them is that they can’t exactly replicate it. They might get a one-off shot, but that’s it. They have no way to duplicate or churn out Hellfire or Sidewinder knockoffs, or SABOT rounds used in a tank.
They will continue to use munitions to build IEDs since they’re easier to build with existing explosives and don’t require particular sophistication. Figure on them to try and make remote control cars to be used in car bombs though.
London-based weapons expert James Bevan said that the parts of the video made public to date don’t show any direct evidence of ISIS having either surface-to-air missiles or improvised thermal batteries, which he said would be used to power the pre-launch phase ofman-portable air defense system missiles, or MANPADS.
Bevan, the executive director of Conflict Armament Research, also said ISIS forces would be unlikely to try to replicate a thermal battery, but “would probably chose a simpler power source — and one that could be equally effective in the short-term — such as rechargeable lithium batteries.”
“Over the past year,” said Bevan, “a number of credible reports have commented on the improvised use by IS forces of lithium batteries to power older generation MANPADS.”
And as we’ve repeatedly seen, car bombs can have devastating effects.

As the prosecution of Mr. Andrews moved forward, police doubled down on their secrecy. They repeatedly failed to comply with their obligation to disclose to the defense attorney that they had used the technology, only admitting it under pressure as the scheduled trial date approached. In June, after holding a hearing where Baltimore Police finally were forced to testify about using the Hailstorm, a judge concluded that the cops had intentionally withheld the information from the defense, in violation of their legal disclosure obligations.

This guy honestly pisses me off. He stepped down from the Senate since he was bored with politics. Fair enough but it forced Tim Kaine who could have ran for governor again into the Senate race. It ended working out since McAuliffe ended up beating Cuccinelli for governor and Kaine beat George Allen and has been a better senator than Webb was but Webb’s attitude pisses me off. I’ve never been a big fan of his. He has some of my gratitude for ending George Allen’s presidential aspirations but at the same time, I don’t like the guy at all.
Frankly I don’t think Webb really has the right to accuse the Democratic Party of abandoning him and his ideals when he wasn’t really a Democrat that long. He had supported George Allen in 2000 for example and George W. Bush for President.

So, President Obama vetoed the GOP repealer of Obamacare. As expected.

Heartbreaking. I saw a doctor interviewed last night, (probably on NPR) and thought at the time, how could anyone not understand these people feeling compelled to flee? We need to have more msm coverage of their plight.
And all the bombs falling, ours, and our allies against ISIS, as well as Russia. We see precious little of it on television. I don’t enjoy seeing carnage, but people in this country need to be reminded on a daily basis what the refugees are running from.
