Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Around the world though people are interested in what is going on right now in the Bahamas and Florida; if there were an overload of traffic to the NHC I would more likely ascribe it to tens of millions of people around the world trying to get information at the same time.

HURRICANE MATTHEW DISCUSSION NUMBER 36
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL142016
1100 PM EDT THU OCT 06 2016
The satellite appearance of Matthew has improved during the past
several hours, with an eye embedded within a more circular central
dense overcast and an increase in the outer banding. Reports from
a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft and coastal radar data show the
presence of centric eyewalls with diameters of about 8 and 60 n mi
respectively. The NOAA aircraft earlier reported a minimum pressure
of 937 mb, and an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter just reported
estimated surface winds of 109 kt from the SFMR and a pressure of
939 mb. Based on these data, the initial intensity is 115 kt.
The initial motion is 325/11 kt. For the next 24-48 hours, Matthew
should move around the western end of the subtropical ridge, with
the motion gradually turning northward and then northeastward.
During this time, the center of the guidance envelope and the
various consensus models have shifted a little to the east. However,
the ECMWF, GFS, and UKMET continue to suggest the possibility of the
hurricane making landfall in Florida and then moving near the coasts
of Georgia and South Carolina. This part of the forecast is nudged
a little to the east and lies between the model consensus and the
previous forecast. After 48 hours, a mid- to upper-level ridge is
forecast to build north and west of Matthew, and the track guidance
forecasts a southeasterly to southerly motion in response. While
there is still a large spread, the GFS, ECMWF, and UKMET are in
better agreement that Matthew should move south between the ridge
and Hurricane Nicole to the east. This part of the forecast follows
this guidance and lies between the GFS and ECMWF.
During the next 12-24 hours, Matthew will likely weaken a little as
it undergoes an eyewall replacement cycle. After that time, it is
expected to encounter strong southwesterly vertical shear, and later
in the forecast period dry air is likely to entrain into the
cyclone. This combination should cause steady weakening, and
Matthew is forecast to drop below hurricane strength by 72 hours.
The new intensity forecast is in best agreement with the SHIPS
model.

Jeez. Some people got no sense of humor.
False beliefs about probability and the universe abound:
A Trump loss would ‘upset the verdict of history’: Allan Lichtman
[…]
However, I also noted that Donald Trump is such a dangerously precedent-breaking candidate that he could upset the verdict of history and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
[…]
It takes a lot of hubris for Lichtman to state that his “13 keys” are the “verdict of history.”
Drumpfskind’s loss will illustrate that Lichtman’s 13 keys are just another example of correlation not being causation.

Did that on the USS America. Even on a thousand foot long sihp riding in the centre of a hurricane, not fun.
While I can walk on bulkheads whilst eating a sandwich, a large portion of the crew spent much of the time hurling into whatever they could find.

The better your sense of balance is the more likely you’ll get seasick. Those of us with hardly any vestibular balance, who depend on visual cues and feedback from our ankle muscles to stay upright are golden. No conflict with what our inner ear is telling us, which is basically nothing.
Let me quote the whole paragraph:
The second presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which half of the questions will be posed directly by citizen participants and the other half will be posed by the moderator based on topics of broad public interest as reflected in social media and other sources. The candidates will have two minutes to respond and there will be an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate further discussion. The town meeting participants will be uncommitted voters selected by the Gallup Organization.
So the organizers don’t claim that the questions will come from that Open Debates site.
re: #83 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Oh, it is not to be missed. An aircraft carrier in heavy weather takes several seconds to roll from one side to the other. Add to that you are inside and cannot see the moving horizon, and your stomach goes all sideways because gravity pulls you one way then the other over several seconds or even a minute, but the bulkheads and overhead and deck all look like they are not moving.
On a small boat like a rowboat, you can see the horizon and the water and your brain can connect with what is happening.

It’s on my to do list to get taken care of for February’s trip this week. It’s maybe $150 for $3000 worth of coverage - well worth it for the peace of mind. Also covers emergency medical evacuation if necessary, depending on the policy and the country.

OK. Yeah, I’ll pass on that.
Well, I said I was off to bed. This time I really mean it. G’night y’all. If you’re in the Southeast, stay safe from the storm. Otherwise, just stay safe.
re: #84 MsJ
I don’t think she’s in FL. That’s the problem, she can’t get to FL and the cruise is going on come hell or high water (no pun intended). Which is why she’s out the cruise costs…she can’t get there for the “fun”.
Going down in an airplane crash would be a lot less fun, IMO.

Yeah, the whole damned concept from bouncing in an airplane 30k feet in the air to bouncing in 20’ waves at sea…NOPE.
I was on a flight that was so bad I thought for sure we were going to crash. From Detroit to Chicago we diverted to Kalamazoo for 6 hours for the storm to pass. I’ve never been so terrified in my life. The plane sounded like it was going to break into pieces.
I wouldn’t think of flying in that again. NOPE. keep my money. I’ll hang onto my life.
I’ve ridden fishing boats, canoes, rafts, tubes, speedboats, jetskis, and ferries. I’m also an expert telemark skier. Motion sickness is a total non-factor with me. I have a highly trained cerebellum.

In all my flying experiences, I’ve had only two really bad turbulence incidents. One was years ago somewhere in the USA. The other was on a flight from China to the States with a friend who had never flown ever. I stayed calm, the crew stayed calm, so she stayed calm, too. Happened right during meal service time, so the crew couldn’t even strap into their jumpseats. They had to stay with the carts by crouching down and hanging on.
Planes are designed to cope with turbulence, and flight crews are trained for it. I don’t worry about it.
Trumpistas are worried that the RNC is sabotaging their hero’s chances of winning, so they’ve started a GOTV campaign hashtagged #MAGA3X — register three voters for Trump.

I can stand the motion at sea, but after a few weeks of that it’s the return to land that gets me sick. I swear the ground moves all over the place. I bounce off the walls in a shower stall and come very close to puking when I first get back on land.

I think it’ll be worse, because of the difference in the proportional delegate count of the Dem primary system vs the all-or-nothing (except for NE & ME) nature of the Electoral College. Sanders ended up with a much greater percentage of delegates than his share of the popular vote would entitle him to, superdelegates notwithstanding. The EC percentage gap between Hillary and Trump OTOH will probably be around twice the popular vote difference.

During WWII, the USN’s TF 38 sailed into a typhoon - bad data and Bull Halsey’s bad decision.
Several ships capsized. Multiple light carriers were damaged, their open bow design with gun tubs for AA protection meant that waves were able to damage the bow deck. After that experience, future US carriers were redesigned or upgraded to enclosed - hurricane - bows.
Halsey had a second encounter with a different typhoon with similar results - damage to multiple ships and loss of planes on several carriers. He was able to ultimately retire as a fleet admiral after the war. Nimitz intervened on his behalf.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The weather here is fine, but it’s the opposite over in Florida, where Matthew has been churning along the coast for hours, and it’s going to continue pounding the coast throughout the day.
A lot of people who chose to stay in their homes during the storm will be having second thoughts as they watch the storm surge and winds batter their homes and neighborhoods. There’s a reason that local, county, and state officials warned for people to evacuate to higher ground inland. It’s no joke, and the more people remain, the more it stresses local emergency responders who have to go and rescue these folks when the situation becomes dire (if they can even get to these folks in time).
As a bunch of reporters note, after Hurricane Andrew, Florida instituted new stronger building codes. But that doesn’t mean all structures are hurricane-ready. Buildings and structures built before the revised building codes were instituted are far more vulnerable. They lack tie-downs/hurricane straps that are meant to keep the roof in place when threatened by hurricane force winds. They lack the kind of structural protections unless they’ve been retrofitted.
Andrew hit south of Miami; this storm is hitting well to the north and up into Georgia and South Carolina.
Storm surge remains the big threat, with wind and flooding rains become the secondary and tertiary threats. Any of them can result in deadly conditions.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Haiti continues climbing. It’s over 300 at this point.

I remember This Old House years ago when they renovated an older house in Hawaii. The roof was kind of a reverse-mansard design—shallower pitch on the bottom and steeper on top, like a Pizza Hut. Apparently this is to kill lift. The outside walls were just plywood, nailed to the outside of the floor plate. “How does that even hold the roof up?” “Holding the roof up isn’t the prime consideration around here—it’s holding it down.”

Just watched hurricane Matthew blow up my power line
The NOAA and NHC are warning about the worst case scenarios, where if the storm wobbles just slightly to the west, the coast gets the brunt of the strongest winds (which are in the NE quadrant of hurricanes. This is basic stuff really.
As much as the models predict the storm course and help predict storm intensity, the storm is a natural system that can wobble and move in micro terms (out to sea by a few miles) - even as the model does well in the trend (the coast-hugging).
Emergency prep has to take the worst case scenario into consideration. It’s what they do. Preserving and protecting lives and all that.
But these asshats think that this is politicized. If the NHC got the track wrong and it slammed ashore and pulled a Shep Smith track - we’d be talking about catastrophic damage up and down the Florida coast, they’d be the first demanding heads that they got the track wrong and seeking Obama’s impeachment.
Reality is that the NHC does a difficult job of tracking storms well. It takes the data available to it and provides good guidance for govt officials to make their preparations and informing the public about the nature of the threat.
If people stayed in their homes all along the coast, and this storm’s track wobbled west just a bit, we’d be talking mass casualties. Thankfully thus far, we’re not hearing that is the case.
But the storm still has another day of slamming the FL, GA, and SC coast before turning out to sea.
Politicizing natural disasters? Think these guys have Obama mixed up with GWB, whose politicized decisions in choosing an unqualified person to head FEMA had dire consequences. That’s even as the NHC warned of catastrophic damage likelihood.
Then again, we’re talking about a GOP that thinks that Obama was in charge during Katrina too.

I’m guessing the two adjacent power lines are hitting each other, making those sparks. One is hot and the other neutral, so we’re seeing short circuits.

I can barely stand flying unless I can sit next to a window and see the ground. I’d be toast on a cruize ship.

Yep. Makes me think of an interview this morning on NPR. Steve Inskeep went to a church in an impoverished area of Cincinnati to talk about the political landscape. The African American minister said that he couldn’t countenance a Trump victory, but regardless of who wins “an evil is being born in this country.” I think he summed up a broader trend that extends across Europe.

Oy.
Only a failed Brexit can save Ukip now
Douglas Carswell and Mark Reckless had defected, with the former particularly believing Ukip had to head in a different direction and essentially rebrand to deliver Brexit success. Stymying the dogmatic rhetoric that characterised the party was regarded as key to neutralising the negativity of the leave campaign.
Meanwhile down in Thanet, Farage and his advisers had a contrasting approach. With a slightly more alt-right flavour, and no doubt with their own calculated reasons to do so, a very different type of messaging and relationship with the media was being pursued.
…
With the central uniting factor, the heart of the party, now ripped out, Ukip paradoxically has to rely on Brexit failing in order to maintain relevance. Its greatest risk now is that in trying to save itself, it actually has to feed off the idea that Brexit won’t be delivered, potentially hampering the progress of the very cause it was founded to deliver.
Trump’s brought out the white nationalists in force. They’re now bold enough to run ads on behalf of Trump.

My dad barely talked about his time in the Navy during WW2, but one of his stories was about the idiotic decision to sail through a Typhoon. His ship was knocked fully onto it’s side but somehow another wave caught the ship and set it upright again.

They’re more concerned with preserving the GOP brand at this point and minimizing damage done by Trump’s blunt style that identifies everything the GOP stands for in stark terms. The damage control by the GOP is about trying to ignore the substance on which they agree and try to make people think the GOP doesn’t truly stand for the principles that Trump speaks about.
Reality is that Trump and the GOP are mirror images of each other (and their core voters). They believe this stuff. They want this stuff. Trump’s just a whole lot more explicit in what the GOP wants to do. That makes GOP efforts to win elections tougher.
The people around Trump are trying to preserve their job opportunities going forward with other campaigns in the future.

That’s exactly what a lot of it is. Trump has exposed the Trump for the ugly and bigoted party it really is and for years the GOP has had a a wink and nudge approach to this that Trump ruined by being out in the open about it and made it even worse by winning the primary. They’re going to attempt to run away from Trump as if he never was nominated after November, they can’t get away with that. If they’re going to keep on blabbing about Ronald Reagan nearly 30 years after he left office, they need to get stuck with the Trump taint too.

Trump should have been prevented from using the tax law then in existence by Clinton who wasn’t in office even though Trump sought even greater benefits by appearing before Congress in testimony that sought some of the tax benefit he claimed.

I suspect Hillary would be trailing Jeb or Kasich or Rubio, although perhaps not by much. I don’t know about Cruz. But they would have been completely different campaigns. And as I’ve theorized before, Trump drags everyone down with him, so I don’t think Hillary would be being perceived or treated as badly by the press and opponents as we’re seeing if someone other than Trump was the GOP nominee.
Btw that whole “Trump said illegals are coming here to vote thing” was pretty much him laying groundwork to explain his defeat.

One thing I’ve noticed with Matthew evacuations, this time most of the shelters are pet-friendly, so people who otherwise would refuse to leave their cats/dogs behind were more likely to go. If he melts down from anything the audience does that will be the complete knockout punch. America does not want to see a politician get angry or real smarmy with a regular person in a town hall setting.
Getting angry and smarmy with another politician is labeled as “politic.” His supporters will eat up anything he does with Clinton, but even they might not be too keen on him trashing someone from the audience asking a question.

Sort of like Arnold Schwarzenegger in California? Arnold had bankrolled the CA GOP for years, but kept getting the brushoff from the Party bigwigs when it came to running for office, because they saw him as way too “liberal” for them. Then, when that idiotic recall election gave him the chance, he jumped in and won - mainly on celebrity/name-recognition.
Though one has to wonder if the analogy goes farther: Schwarzenegger proved a surprisingly effective executive (mainly by not pushing the troglodytic RW bigoted social agenda most CA Republicans favored*), but it helped the Party very little: they stuck with a regressive and ideologically rigid platform - with the result that the CA GOP is now an near-impotent minority in State politics. For which Californians seem to be grateful.
I’m not sure the parallels can be extended to a national level, though, but it’s an interesting comparison anyway.

Muggy as crap outside, but thus far, no rain. Expecting 8-12” (yikes) and 25-50 mph winds—but they’re saying it won’t likely hit till late tonight/tomorrow.
Just hope I don’t lose power today, as I have a ton of work to do that requires phone and my landline is digital cable, so no power/no phone, and my cell phone has been losing charge pretty quickly (have a new phone, but haven’t set it up yet and don’t want to risk screwing it up.)
On the plus side, my two most sane neighbors are staying; we have plenty of food, alcohol and ice, so as long as the the roofs don’t blow off, I think we’re good.

That’s been one of the reasons that so many people in prior storms refused to leave their homes despite being flood zones - they didn’t want to leave their pets to an uncertain future.

3 destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 790 men were lost.
Radar image of the eye structure:
As far as I can tell, this is one of the very first radar images of a large tropical storm.
A Court of Inquiry found that Admiral Halsey had committed “an error of judgement” in sailing the fleet directly into the storm, but did not recommend any sanctions. Later, in July 1945, Halsey ran the fleet into yet another typhoon, resulting in 6 fatalities and another 76 planes lost, but no ship losses. Another Court of Inquiry recommended that Halsey be relieved of command, but Admiral Nimitz rejected that recommendation.
Let’s not forget that today is the 10th anniversary of the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya for exposing the crimes of the Kremlin.

A couple of weeks later, after my article about how Trump’s business interests would create a conflict of unprecedented proportions, I received a tweet from someone with the twitter handle “Mike’s Deplorable AF.”
…
In his tweet, which has since been deleted, Mike made mention of my seizures and included a small video. It contained images of Pepe the Frog, a cartoon character that has been identified by the Anti-Defamation League as a hate symbol. I was carrying my iPad, looking at the still image on the video and, without thinking, touched the PLAY button. The video was some sort of strobe light, with flashing circles and images of Pepe flying toward the screen. It’s what’s called epileptogenic—something that triggers seizures. Fortunately, since I was standing, I simply dropped my iPad to the ground the second I realized what Mike had done. It landed face down on the bathroom floor.

re: #408 Dr Lizardo
A particularly dim-witted Colobus monkey could run a better campaign. If that is indeed the case, who in their right mind cancels political advertising in the last few weeks prior to a Presidential election? The only possibility I can see is that the Trump campaign figures it’s not worth spending the $$$ in states they’re likely to lose, and that tells me that there must be some kind of internal polling that shows this.
If the Trump campaign is indeed writing off Ohio, Florida and No. Carolina 30 days out from the election, isn’t this basically admitting that the whole thing is a lost cause? Especially as OH has been, AFAICT, pretty much, at best/worst a toss-up in polling (?). How many more/other “battleground” states are there for Trump to concentrate on? IN? MO? WI? This does indeed smell of scam - even though (IIRC - correction will be graciously accepted) unspent campaign funds are supposed to be refunded/applied to outstanding debts…
re: #416 Backwoods_Sleuth
I flew to Charleston once. Nice airport - easy to get in/out. Commercial airport shares space with a USAF base, so they were flying C-17s in/out at the time. Pretty impressive watching those planes landing/taking off.

Yes, pretty much. That leads to my speculation as to whether the Trump campaign has some kind of internal polling that points in the direction of a debacle.
And yes, it reeks of a typical Trumpian scam, though like you, I thought unspent campaign funds were to be refunded or used to pay off any outstanding debts.

If the funds came from the RNC (or were anticipated to come from the RNC), Reince may feel it’s better spent shoring up Senate candidates in close races.
re: #411 Timothy Watson
They are all generally listed as close races by public polls and all are must wins for Trump. It makes little sense to pull adds regardless of what the internal polls are showing unless the goal is to focus you efforts on pulling one additional state from Hillary and hoping those come through for you.
That assumes you’re playing to win. If you are fairly certain you’re going to lose, and the main goal is grifting, it makes perfect sense to pull adds and divert those funds to activities that do more to line your own pockets.

Except Rubio is only up +5.5 in Florida and the race in NC is too close to call. Pulling presidential adds there risks negatively impacting down ticket races in those states.

The RNC may be more concerned about trying to save the Senate, but yes, there could well be a negative impact down ticket. Demotivation for GOP voters.

Fortunately such people don’t send me E-mail. (Or if they do it goes into my “destroy before opening” folder.)
So Trump campaign announces they raised $18 million in 24 hours after the debate and then cancel ads a week later? Something doesn’t add up.

Let’s not forget that today is the 10th anniversary of the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya for exposing the crimes of the Kremlin.
She was murdered and she exposed Kremlin’s crimes (and many non-Kremlin crimes). How these two facts relate to each other is still an open question.

re: #397 Teukka
It’s worse than that. You need to keep your check on the victims posture so (s)he doesn’t end up in a position which compromizes the airways, keep them from slamming their head and other limbs into a hard floor too hard, check that the airways remain clear, all the while keeping an eye on the clock so you know how long the seizure has lasted.
And in applicable cases be prepared to administer seizure-stopping medications and be prepared for well-meaning bystanders believing you are an insane criminal.Strange idea of “fun” “flapping” these deplorabes have…
Or strangers calling an ambulance (which insurance will not pay for because a seizure by itself is not considered a valid medical condition, except in certain instances). Had that done for me.
All this wingnuttery about Hillary Clinton “suffering from epilepsy” has been addressed by the Epilepsy Foundation as giving the general public bad information on what a seizure is and what someone should do for it.
It would be nice if Chief Justice John Roberts publicly spoke about his epilepsy, but he prefers not to. (That would go quite a way to dispel the notion you cannot hold high office with epilepsy. President Madison, who also had epilepsy, is not here to speak with us now.)

Sounds like standard emigre politics -a la Miami Cubans. Those emigrants forced out of their countries for political reasons (whatever their economic status) often (usually?) form blocs who will support candidates based mainly on how hard said candidates bash the governments that threw them out.

It’s been said before, but the reason Trump isn’t putting money into advertising is because the money isn’t going to a Trump-owned company. He only wants to spend his campaign money on things that benefit himself.
