Of all the multitude of enemies Trump has made, in the long run, it’s the women, of all ages, colors, beliefs, and classes, that will matter most. After these marches, they likely won’t be as flashy or get the same attention as some of the other groups, but they’ll get it done. As most of us men know, while we are out thumping our chests, there’s a woman behind us doing the unglamorous work that really changes things.

In case anyone was wondering what the execrable Ken Blackwell has been up to (I was checking to see if he’s running his mouth about the illegal voter bullshit), here are a few updates.
In a Washington Times piece titled “A media noose for Jeff Sessions: He’s a white son of the South and that’s enough to justify a lynching,” Blackwell attacked Washington Post and Los Angeles Times reporting on Sessions, which he blamed on the fact that “someone, somewhere, deep down doesn’t believe a white man from Alabama should be the attorney general of the United States”
and
Kenneth Blackwell spoke to Lou Dobbs on the continuing crime crisis in Chicago and the unfair accusations against its police department.
and he said that Trump won the “respect” vote—uh huh

The minds we’re working to change aren’t the wingnuts, they’re well and truly gone. It’s those “There’s no difference between the parties” goobers, the ones who sat home or voted third party because their personal dislike of Hillary made them susceptible to all that “both sides” bullshit. The ones who are going to watch family members lose insurance and even die, who are going to feel the cuts to the social safety net to finance tax cuts for the rich, who are going to have family who count the wait time to see a VA specialist in terms of weeks or months. re: #157 Scout
Sorry, this won’t be worded very well, but have you folks noticed something about Trump supporters in real life — that is, people you know and deal with in person?
I know one in my office, and since the election he has been much more belligerent in everyday interactions. Not just with me, but with everyone in the office. And not just in talking about politics, but everything. I have a theory that he feels “liberated.” Or maybe just “powerful.”
A friend who lives in Washington state tells me he has experienced the same thing. That when he’s out walking his dog in his neighborhood, the people who had (and still have) Trump yard signs are really snotty.
So I’m just wondering if you have noticed anything similar, or is it our imaginations?
The overwhelming majority of my town voted for Mr. Trump. (Only eight for Mrs. Clinton.)
No one has sung Mr. Trump’s praises to me since the election, and a few of his supporters are now wondering what’s going on with him.

This is NOT good:
Android Central analyzed images of Trump using his phone and suggested he probably owns a Samsung Galaxy S3, first released in 2012 - a phone so old that it would no longer receive any new security updates or major software releases. If Trump is still using this device, it represents a major security threat. Perhaps the greatest risk, as highlighted by security expert Bruce Schneier, is the possibility that the phone could be hacked and turned into an eavesdropping device, listening in on classified conversations. “That Android has a microphone, which means it can be turned into a room bug without anyone’s knowledge. That’s my real fear,” said Schneier….

In my conservative regional newspaper, they are running an on-line poll asking readers if they approve of Mr. Trump’s executive action on the Keystone XL Pipeline. Votes running heavily “no.”
I think Jane Kleeb has something to work with here against Adrian Smith in the next election.
Meanwhile, the newspaper has a bunch of interviews of Trump voters thrilled by executive action on the so-called border wall. Most seem either clueless how this will affect prices of things like gasoline and food, or don’t care how much it costs us (the rationalisations are already starting on him promising to make Mexico pay for it).
Interesting amongst the comments is this woman, who benefited from the “wet-foot dry-foot” policy with Cuba.
Immigration has long been a unifying issue for conservatives, especially in border states that bear the brunt of immigrant and drug smuggling. The issue has rallied people to vote Republican around the country over the years, including immigrants such as Mercedes B. Izquierdo of Miami.
The retired saleswoman left Cuba 50 years ago and strongly backs Trump’s border efforts.
“I think that building a wall is an excellent, perfect idea. There’s so much we have to do,” she said. “There are so many people coming from South America that are coming to destroy our country. Terrorists and criminals are looking to harm us.”
(There’s that ol’ fear thing that Republicans are so good at marshalling).

Interesting - I use a Galaxy S3 myself. Hell of a good phone, I have to say, and quite reliable.
But then again, I’m not POTUS and I’m pretty sure I’m a fairly low priority on any intel agencies hacking list.
Trump proving yet again he’s a dolt.

NE-2 (most of Omaha) is noted as a swing district, though.
The map shows how it is gerrymandered (much of South Omaha is included in NE-1 with a whole lot of rural area between Omaha and Lincoln, so that it is overwhelmed by rural voters).
Nevertheless, the Republican candidate in this election that ousted NE-2’s Democratic representative only won by about 3,400 votes.
There is a part that appears gerrymandered in the north but actually isn’t.
Due to the peculiar way the Missouri River flows and lops off oxbow lakes occasionally, it did that to a portion of Iowa. The inset into NE-2 in the north, though on the west side of the river, is actually Carter Lake, Iowa (part of Steve King’s district in Iowa). It is not connected to Iowa by anything but roads that go through Nebraska.

Closest swing districts to me are PA-06 and PA-08 to the north of me. Essentially the GOP-centric areas of Bucks County, and the former district a bit more gerrymandered than the later.
Those might be a better target for me to do volunteer work than the center of Philadelphia. And the person I hike with lives in the latter district as well. She is amused when I refer to Trump as the “fascist talking yam”.

The Republican and Democratic leaders of the House intelligence committee have voiced divergent goals for their investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, suggesting possible discord over how deeply Congress will examine any links between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia.
The committee announced Wednesday that it is investigating Russian cyberattacks in a parallel probe to the Senate intelligence committee investigation announced two weeks ago. The House committee said it has already received “important documents” and that staff members went to CIA headquarters on January 19 to review records.
But the House committee’s top Republican and Democratic leaders stressed differing questions they want to answer following the January 6 US intelligence report that found Russian President Vladimir Putin “aspired to help” the Trump campaign by publicly discrediting Hillary Clinton.
Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the committee’s top Democrat, told NPR on Thursday that the committee “certainly” would investigate “any links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.”
By contrast, Chairman Devin Nunes, a California Republican, said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the panel wants to “get to the bottom of this intelligence report, whether it was put together properly or not.”…

Why marches may be the most important way to deal with Trump:
In that world, losing the popular vote so badly or having an inauguration crowd dwarfed by the one that protested him the next day is a sign he’s not a winner — he’s a loser. After all, Jeb Bush was lame and “low-energy” because his crowd sizes were so small. Marco Rubio was “little” and Ted Cruz was “lying.” After more than a year of bragging about his crowd sizes against his primary opponents and Hillary Clinton, the fact that his Inauguration had so few people attend is stinging. But the fact that there were two or three times the number of protesters the next day -most of whom were women — is a sign, according to Trump’s own logic, that he might just be as low-energy as Jeb.
…
That’s why popular protest is such an important weapon against Trump. It shows his weakness even to his base, because they see the strength of the opposition with their own eyes. The 54 percent who voted against him were personified in last weekend’s Women’s March — a march of both women and men, children and grandparents, people of all races and creeds.
…
So we cannot just call him a cry baby or dismiss these lies as a crazy conspiracy. We have to show it. Our resistance cannot begin and end with last weekend’s marches. We have to keep the marches and protests going to show that the majority is not with him. His support is a minority, and it may always be.We have to keep showing up, because that’s our most powerful weapon. Trump can dismiss polls, but he can’t ignore people. He can yell at the media, but he can’t erase the photos and videos of millions of Americans taking to the streets to fight back.
From this moment forward, resistance must be routine.
Look forward to seeing final results of VoteStand. Gregg Phillips and crew say at least 3,000,000 votes were illegal. We must do better!

At same time, Trump’s supposed to be getting on the phone with Putin, and reports suggest that Trump’s readying the plan to drop sanctions against Russia. No doubt the winner in all that is Russia and Putin, not the US.
Oh, and Mexico’s former President continues to have won the week with his #fuckingWall tweet. Mexico is having none of Trump’s nonsense, and the GOP plans for a tariff or border adjustment is nothing more than a tax on all goods imported from Mexico that consumers in the US end up paying. That’s right idiot Trump voters - you’ll be paying more for all those fruits and vegetables that are in the supermarket that are sourced from Mexico (which is a pretty hefty figure), and those costs will be disproportionately borne by the low and middle class, while the rich can absorb it and shake it off while getting ready to cash in with massive income tax cuts (everyone else sees only marginal cuts, if at all).
“Rocky.” Trump couldn’t go 24 hours without starting war with NPS over inauguration crowd photos or week w/o trade war w/Mexico @EWErickson

.@GovChristie doesn’t seem to care that being registered in 2 jurisdictions (not a crime) isn’t the same as voting in 2 states (a crime)
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) January 27, 2017
Look for Christie to push voter suppression tactics even though there’s zero evidence of voter fraud in NJ. Among the tactics will be over-inclusive voter roll purges that take hundreds of thousands lawfully registered voters off the rolls so that when they go to vote, they’ll find that they’re no longer able to vote through the normal means and have to cast provisional ballots - which are often not counted until after the results are made. It’s a way to dilute the polls, slow down voting at polling places (since it takes more time to search for the voter’s information, fill out provisional ballots, etc.), and otherwise depresses turnout.
re: #132 I cannot.
I don’t normally hold grudges…but ME:3 was especially jarring considering how the friend that relentlessly talked me into buying them and repeatedly brought up BioWare’s legendary reputation in the field of RPGs, talked me into beginning the ME trilogy a month before ME:3 came out…and I dived in and powered my way to the end of ME:2, then dove straight into ME:3…
…then the end was trollface.jpg…
…then there was the post-trollface.jpg PR disaster…which could actually teach Sean Spicer how to REALLY fuck up PR…
…then there was the extended edition that was supposed to fix it, which turned into trollface.mp4…
I actually hadn’t played ME3 until a couple months ago but had followed all the reaction after it was released. After playing it for the first time a couple months ago I was like, “this shit still doesn’t make the least bit of sense.”

Why marches may be the most important way to deal with Trump:
Marches are very valuable, but must be well organized and promoted. Otherwise we risk falling into the Million-Nothing-March like the RWNJ Truckers/Bikers/Vets. You’re only as good as your last turnout.

I keep meaning to post the latest by Rude Pundit. Glorious.
Hey, Donald Trump, President Trump, whatever the fuck you wanna be called,
I don’t like you and I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t like me, if you knew who I was. See, I want you to fail so spectacularly that you are tempted to resign or take your own life on live TV and video streaming. Anyone who has ever had to deal with a pissy elderly relative knows exactly what you are: a belligerent shithead bullying your way through your episodes of dementia. You’re just rich enough to be taken seriously with your mad ranting. And I don’t give a fuck how much you suffer because of your mental decline. It won’t be enough.
So I’m probably pretty goddamn low on the list of people who should be giving you advice, but here we are. You’re the president and I’m one of your subjects…I mean, citizens, and you’ve talked about returning power to me, among everyone else. Maybe read this on your phone when you’re sitting on the shitter, getting ready to pinch out a tight, angry, painful fiber-deprived loaf, before screaming out something idiotic for one of your ass-wipers to tweet.
Let me put this in the gendered language you love because it’s so not politically correct:
Be a man.
‘Cause right now, you’re acting like a little, needy bitch, like a particularly well-pampered Pekingese that demands more petting and more treats. Be a man. A real man. One who doesn’t require to be told endlessly that he’s the best, the greatest, the biggest. One who isn’t compelled to ask for affirmation from people who couldn’t give less of a shit about things like the size of your inauguration crowd. I know it goes against your very being and how you’ve lived your entire stupid life. But give it a try.

Felix Randomkitty is apparently into pain.
He jumped in my lap to get my attention, then went over to the refrigerator (where his insulin is). He just bows down and presents the nape of his neck for a shot.
My ex-boyfriend had a cat who required insulin. She was very docile about the shots. He thought she’d somehow figured out, in that little furry head of hers, that the shots made her feel better.
re: #114 Anymouse
I’m beginning to think if the RWNJs get their way with Roe v Wade and Griswold v Connecticut, perhaps the thing for me to do would be to invest in border-town family planning clinics in Mexico or Canada.
I’ve been saying for years that if Griswold got overturned, the cartels would do well to switch over to birth control, Plan B and RU486. This was supposed to be sarcasm, not a prediction of next week or next month or next year.

I’ve suggested this before, and I’ll suggest it again. Back in 2008, Anonymous flustered the hell out of Scientology by showing up in front of orgs on the first Saturday of the month with cake, signs and music. My best friend growing up says he’s anti-Trump and I do believe him but he’s been shitting on any opponents of Trump. I think he like the GOP leadership was only worried about whether Trump would win or not. I am just pretty cynical about these people too. After the election, one of my dad’s aquaintences remarked to him how “he knew Trump would win but didn’t know it would be in a landslide.” These people lived in an atternative facts zone long before Trump got elected.

I think a lot of people think Trump is just another politician. The conservatives are disappointed that he’s already shown that he’s not really different than other politicians in that he’s once again rigged the government to favor the rich, but they’re going through their day as if nothing is really changing.

Boardwalk is great. I’m not sure what he was before the Manchurian Candidate remake which I’ve yet to see either but he’s one of those good actors that makes everything he’s in just a bit better.

It always starts so innocently. You’re in college, you see a few protests, and in an act of rebellion you experiment with a little 19th century counter-enlightenment German philosophy - not every night, just on Saturdays. Eventually you’re tearing through one blood-and-soil tract after another and not getting the same rush. So you start hanging around historical exhibits of the European theatre, or following white guys with no hair just in case. Next thing you know, you’re mainlining the Daily Stormer and you have no idea how it happened.
It’s probably the fault of liberals, though.

From my fb:
Many of you know that I’m a grateful six year cancer survivor. What you may not know is that due to a pre-existing condition, I was uninsurable BEFORE cancer and at any cost. I simply could not qualify for insurance pre-ACA. I had to prepay for my chemotherapy drugs before I could even begin to schedule my treatment. Total cost of care just over $350,000 over six months, followed by 3 years of biannual PET scans at $12,000 each.
I disclose this to express my gratitude for all the organizations and individuals who came to my aid AND to provide food for thought as you consider the regulations that govern access to health insurance and healthcare in this country. If you need more input, private message me and I can tell you about the conversation I had to have with my husband about whether/not to spend every dollar we had on a bet about whether or not treatment would be successful.
Please give this a moment to sink in and then consider the following:
So you are aware, the executive order to repeal the ACA includes us all: insured, uninsured, under insured.
The first order of business the new president signed was an executive order to repeal the ACA.
Here’s what this means: Even if you are safely covered behind employer-provided insurance, the protections set forth in the ACA (Affordable Care Act), apply to you too. And if those protections are repealed along with the rest (or any part) of the program, you will also be affected.
That means you may be trapped in a job, because your pre-existing condition may mean you will not qualify for new insurance offered by another employer, and the cost of private insurance would be prohibitive. If your employer shuts down, lays you off, or even changes insurers, well, you are out of luck. The Senate GOP voted this week that they would not require an eventual ACA replacement to protect against discrimination for pre-existing conditions, which was the standard before the ACA.
It means that you (a young adult under the age of 26) or your adult children (over 18) may find yourselves without the protection of insurance, as the Senate GOP voted last night that an eventual ACA replacement will not be required to allow young people to remain on their parents’ insurance up to the age of 26.
It means that if you have a high-risk pregnancy, or life-threatening illness such as cancer, you may not be able to afford all the care you need, because you may hit lifetime or annual caps. If you have an infant born with any kind of severe medical condition, or premature, they may hit their lifetime insurance cap before they are old enough to walk. The Senate GOP voted last night that an eventual ACA replacement program would not be required to prohibit lifetime insurance caps.
It means that if you are a struggling parent who is uninsured or under-insured, you will no longer be able to count on at least your kids getting the routine medical and dental care they need under the Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP).
The Senate GOP voted that CHIP is not required to be protected by an eventual ACA replacement.
These provisions of the ACA affect everyone in this country, not just those without insurance through their employers.
If you are not okay with these changes, call your representatives and let them know what’s important to you.
Nothing has been set in stone yet, but our legislators have shown us a map of what they plan to do if constituents don’t make their voices heard loud and clear.

When I think about my life, I think about all the immigrants I’ve known. Legal or illegal, it doesn’t matter to me honestly. And yes I realize immigrating illegally is a crime but how many of us underaged drank, how many of us have enjoyed marijuana, how many of us jaywalk without even realizing it. What this new administration I think honestly doesn’t get is that immigration is the very thing that makes this country unique. It’s a country where a child of a German immigrant (my Big Dad) can marry an Irish-American girl a little less well off than her. It’s where my Dad- German/Irish can marry my mom the granddaughter of Eastern European immigrants. And it’s where my brother can marry a Peru native. My niece on her maternal side is the first American born person and I think there’s something really special about that. We’re all immigrants in some way. Some of us came as early as the colonies and some of us are still arriving but we’re united by one thing, our shared desire to be part of this land.

The stupidest man ever elected president causes unexpected problems.
Translators are struggling to interpret Donald Trump
Translators around the world reported that it’s a struggle to accurately interpret Donald Trump’s speeches, statements and interviews - a challenge which shows no signs of abating as the dominant newsmaker assumes the world’s most influential office.
“For translators, Trump is an unprecedented and desolating struggle,” wrote professional translator Bérengère Viennot in the French version of Slate last month.
In the widely circulated article, Ms Viennot lamented the president’s disjointed syntax, run-on sentences and limited vocabulary.
“When it comes to speaking of something other than his victory, he clings desperately to the words contained in the question put to him, without succeeding in completing his own thought,” she wrote.
“The poverty of the vocabulary is striking.”

Hey all!
I haven’t been able to follow along today, but I just saw something on a small car forum I visit from time to time.
A poster there said he saw where the Trump admin is having issues with the credentials submitted by the British press corp following Theresa May on her visit with Trump. He claimed the FBI gave documentation to the Trumpers that used the European date standars of dd_mm_yyyy (date, month, year) instead of the US use of mm_dd_yyyy (month, date, year)?
He had cited someone from the Trump people saying “there is no 15th month.”
Please tell me this isn’t true? Please tell me the Trump people are not that stoopid!
This is an interesting read.

Says a lot that a black man like Obama has a much firm grasp of the English language than a rich white guy like Pumpkin Pinochet here.
Women and people of color are used to the need to be twice as good to rank among the half as good white men. Pumpkin Pinochet has color, but no self awareness about being less than half as good.

“America First” was a popular sentiment then too. We had to be dragged kicking and screaming into WWII.
Had Hitler not declared war on the USA after we declared war on the Japanese Empire, there’s a good possibility we might not have gone to war with Nazi Germany at all.
Hitler’s fatuous declaration of war, certainly one of the biggest blunders in recorded history, ensured that the US Congress would respond in kind, thus sealing his fate.
re: #330 jaunte
My father’s family were America Firsters in St. Louis. Big Lindbergh fans.
I think it’s honestly easy to see how people fell for it. WWI had been so tragic and Lindburgh was a national hero following his transatlantic flight and Ford was widely admired too. I have no idea how my family was on the subject honestly. I do know that my very distant cousin on my mom’s side, the man who is in the Iwo Jima flag photo enlisted in the USMC because of the German annexation of Czechoslovakia. I don’t know how my dad’s dad’s German-American family felt. Both my paternal grandfather and his brother already had fairly big families and were in their late 20’s by the time war broke out. I think my Dad told me his Dad tried to join but got turned away because of his job (he was a federal labor arbitrator and a back injury).
re: #302 Eclectic Cyborg
Oh yeah. The wall would be a huge fucking environmental disaster.
Start with the fact that the US-Mexico border for a significant distance is demarcated by the Rio Grande River. The border is the center-line of the river. Treaty governs how the water is to be used.
Part of the border crosses a Native American reservation.
Another section of the border is within the Big Bend National Park.
Trump doesn’t care or give a shit, nor do his idiot followers.
When the Texas delegation says that they don’t want Trump’s wall, you know that Trump’s blowing BS (but then again, if you go back to what Trump said hours after claiming he’d build a big and beautiful wall, he offered the caveat that the wall would be supplemented by natural barriers, like rivers, mountains, and deserts.
In other words, he’s describing the situation we have now.
700 miles of fence/wall were authorized and built starting in 2006 and continued into Obama’s administration (when the 700 miles were completed).
In 2014, President Obama made removing undocumented immigrants convicted of a felony a top priority for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The number of deportations from the US hit its peak in 2013, with more than 435,000 people being removed from the country, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Almost 200,000 of those people had been convicted of crimes.
Hours earlier, Trump made a quick visit to Mexico City for talks on immigration and other issues with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. US officials believe there are about 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US and Trump’s plans could lead to the deportation of more than six million of them, as many as two million who had committed crimes and another 4.5 million who had overstayed their visas to enter the US. Trump left unclear the fate of other immigrants who entered the country without documentation but have not committed crimes.
During the 25 February 2016 presidential debate, Donald Trump repeated his claim that he would make Mexico pay for the wall he has proposed building on the southern US border to curb illegal immigration, and because of objections from Mexican officials on the issue, Trump said, “The wall just got 10 feet higher.” A February 2016 Rasmussen poll found 70 percent of Republican voters - and 51 percent of voters overall - support Trump’s border wall plan.
The same Trump idiots also ignore that Trump said how anyone can circumvent the wall simply by climbing a ladder or using a long enough rope.

Strange show of loyalty to Japan, especially since the Japanese had refused to join in the invasion of the Soviet Union, allowing Stalin to transfer Siberian units to the Eastern Front. The smart move by Hitler would’ve been to condemn the Japanese attack, and state his desire for a negotiated peace with Britain so that he could focus on defending Europe from Marxism.

The R&B singer accepted an invitation to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration ball, and after the swift backlash, Michele defended herself through an abstract statement saying she was “willing to be a bridge.” No one crossed that bridge: Spike Lee dropped her music from his Netflix series, ?uestlove said he’d “pay her NOT to perform,” and, most recently, her “family has disowned” her. Although she accepted the gig with “no hesitation,” Michele came to the stunning realization that Trump didn’t want to claim her either. She told Billboard that she didn’t get to shake his hand.
Originally I was supposed to perform directly after his first speech, and I had done that with Barack Obama before, so I was used to that kind of experience. And the woman who organized the event came and told me, “Now you’re going to go first and he’s going to go after you.” I looked her in the eye and said, “My family has disowned me. If you decide to Google me, you’ll see that America is writing about me in their newspapers. I’m the black poster child for discord right now, and he’s not going to shake my hand?” So no, I didn’t get to meet him.”

Yes it was; even von Ribbentrop, a monumentally dense man, tried to talk Hitler out of it by noting that the agreement the Reich had with Japan only came into effect if the USA attacked Japan. Hitler countered that if he didn’t declare war on the USA, then Japan would consider Nazi Germany an ineffectual ally, which is ironic as all hell as Japan decided to sit out Operation Barbarossa, which would have put the USSR in a quite a pickle.

Note the fall of the Marine’s pants: the slight bends are identical.

I identified the stamp, and it’s provenance. Iran. 1980. Post revolution. Called Iran a threat, and that people (leftists) underestimate the threat. That’s still true. People still underestimate the threat they pose to the region, but it’s also a threat that has been reduced due to Iran deal on their nuclear program.
Curiously, the same people who think Iran is a huge threat now ignore the threat Russia is posing to the region through its proxies that happen to include… wait for it… Iran and Syria. Or the threat Russia poses by destablizing the US by subterfuge and acts to undermine the outcome of the US election that was just concluded. That includes the current occupant of the White House.

Russian lawmakers vote to decriminalize some forms of domestic violence
Soon it will no longer be a crime in Russia to beat family members — as long as you don’t cause bodily harm.
The lower house of the Russian parliament on Friday gave final approval to a bill decriminalizing some forms of domestic violence — a move that has sparked intense public debate.
The State Duma voted 380-3 Friday to eliminate criminal liability for battery on family members that doesn’t cause bodily harm, making it punishable instead by a fine or a 15-day arrest. The law needs to be approved by the largely rubber-stamp upper chamber and signed by President Vladimir Putin, who has signaled his support.
The bill has raised fears that it could sow impunity for those who beat up their wives and children, but its supporters have argued that it retains criminal responsibility for repeat offenders.
