It’s Already Happened Here (Goes to an article by Sarah Kendzior at The Baffler)

It was 1855, and Abraham Lincoln was in a mood.
“Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid,” he wrote to his friend Joshua Speed, describing the rise of the bigoted, anti-immigrant Know-Nothing party. “As a nation, we begin by declaring that ‘all men are created equal.’ We now practically read it ‘all men are created equal, except negroes.’ When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read ‘all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.’ When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty—to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.”
As he characterized an American republic convulsed with heated debates about race, immigration, and political representation, Lincoln delivered an oddly prescient diagnosis of America in 2017, as we witness another series of bigoted, know-nothing assaults on our national unity. How did it happen, pundits wonder, that a 240-year-old democracy has descended into the sort of authoritarian ethno-nationalist rancor normally associated with antidemocratic states like contemporary Uzbekistan or infamous totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany? How did a “nation built on immigration” come to propose a ban on Muslims and mass deportation of Mexicans? Why are White House cabinet posts now filled with executives seemingly selected to destroy the agencies they lead? Why are our legislative and judiciary branches on the verge of caving in to a power-hungry executive branch that resembles, as Daniel Webster wrote, in an 1832 warning of his own, “nothing else but pure despotism”? And, um, who is really running that executive branch anyway?

The City and County of Philadelphia is a Sanctuary City. Mayor Kenney signed a bill within the past month. That and several college campuses have that designation in the Philadelphia area.
Trump and his know nothing GOP would love to de-fund the very municipalities and urban areas that generate a majority of the tax revenues that help prop up the rural and mostly GOP controlled states around the nation.
The GOP doesn’t mind redistribution of wealth, so long as they benefit from it - the rich getting richer, or making sure that the Blue States subsidize their low state taxes and lifestyles.
Bannon/Trump/GOP still think there’s godawful carnage around the nation, and is trying to hang it on illegal aliens, minorities, and yet the reality is that crime is at multidecade lows, and that if they really wanted to do something about crime and homicides and gun violence, they’d stop sucking at the teat of the NRA and show some spine. But they’re too busy getting campaign contributions and sucking up to these gun access absolutists that the body count is on them.

Bring up Chicago? Yeah, Chicago homicide rate spiked from 2015, but guess what, it’s still below the rates from the 1980s and 1990s. Before that, Chicago had dropped significantly (and national homicide rates were adversely affected because of the spike in Chicago and handful of other cities). Meanwhile, NYC crime rates and homicide rates continue at historic lows - absolute and per capita basis.
But when asked what to do about the crime rates, the GOP thinks, we’ll add more police, send in the national guard - anything to ignore that guns and gun violence plays a big role in all this. GOP doesn’t care, and they’ll suck off the NRA for that sweet juicy campaign donations all while people die needlessly from guns that are way too easily available.
Early OT: Springsteen apologizes for letting Trump win.
Let’s talk about numbers. Trump won Wisconsin by about 22,000 votes. Michigan by about 11,000. Shit, 22,000? I sold 1 million copies of Human Touch—without the E Street Band—and even I can’t stand that record. Eleven thousand? That’s the first night of a four-night run for me.
Look, if I had done that—if I had followed him around from rally to rally, stood on a park bench across the street, played “Kumbaya” or some Suicide song on the acoustic guitar and then gave soundbites to the 800 camera crews that were there—yes, I totally think I could have swung those votes. Between the media, and Trump getting pissed at me for stealing his thunder, shit, I could have gotten most of them on the first day.
Now in North Carolina the margin was 180,000, and I know that sounds like a lot, but what if I enlisted Garth Brooks and, oh, I don’t know, Darius Rucker? Oh, and are you telling me Dave Matthews wouldn’t have shown up? Of course he would have. And remember, 180,000 isn’t really 180,000—because you take one from Trump and put that vote in Hillary’s column, that actually counts as two. Even if we couldn’t get the venues, we could have played in parks. Like the cops are going to bust Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews for playing in the park? Yeah, that’ll happen. The cops will be standing in the front lining up for selfies.
Do I think if I had worked my ass off I could have changed the outcome of the election? I don’t know if I can say yes. But I can say maybe. And imagine if someone had said to you, “You take some action now, and maybe it can change whether your children will be able to have a legal abortion, maybe it will change whether your children will have healthcare, shit, maybe it will change whether my children will have a planet.” You’ll go, “Yeah, hell yeah. I’ll throw a little sweat, muscle and time behind that maybe.”
So I look myself in the mirror, and I ask, could I have made a difference?
And now I answer yes. I think I could have.

Some noted reasons for this decline is the removal of lead in gasoline (as lead damages brain development and causes more violent behavior). You can see this in all the trends across Europe - 20 years after lead was removed. Now if we allow Trumpkin and his merry band of assholes ruin the EPA … more lead comes in… in a decade or two violence will start on the uptick again… and if you thought the racist assholes were irrational now… just wait.

One of these is violence against law enforcement.
LEOs killed in the line of duty have been dropping for years and are down sharply from the 1970s/1980s. Last year was a one-year blip with the Dallas shootings (much in the same way that NYC homicide stats are skewed by 2001 as the 9/11 attacks constitutes nearly 3k homicides - and the LEO death toll is skewed for 2001 for the same reason).
The widespread availability of bulletproof vests has helped in a huge and meaningful way, and cops are doing dangerous jobs, but they’ve been policing more people and are safer than they’ve been.
No, what this is is explicitly a rebuttal of the whole BLM movement, and the GOP spitting in the faces of minorities harmed by encounters with cops.

I would expect that the current issue wont be lead so much as opioid dependency and violence associated with those drugs. — Taegan Goddard (@politicalwire) February 9, 2017
I’ve seen some reporting that suggests that those who have been in the military are less likely to use firearms in law enforcement, but this is one of those things that may have been anecdotal versus survey. I’m all for collecting more data, but let’s also see how many people are killed by law enforcement, and their racial makeup as well.
That’s a far greater group of people - hundreds of people a year are killed by cops, and not all of them are criminals, or even carrying weapons, or doing anything wrong. Heck, some might be playing with a toy gun (in an open carry state), or handling a bb gun (again, in an open carry state), or had a broken tail light or other citation worthy infraction. Your odds of getting killed by a cop go up if you’re a minority (black especially), or have a mental illness.

The whole of the GOP these days do not understand their country and would not like it if they did. Ayep. Couple years back, I looked up the statistics on police deaths and found that more cops were killed by illness or non-chase auto accidents than shot or stabbed. But the former get rolled in with the latter and sold to us as “deaths in the line of duty” to perpetuate the idea that cops are being hunted down in droves.

The trailer has sparked complaints on social media that Netflix and creator Justin Simien were prejudiced against white Americans and calls for a boycott.
