Video: At Disastrous Press Conference, Trump Patronizes Black Reporter

Politics • Views: 37,282

YouTube

There were many bizarre and unhinged moments in today’s freakish Donald Trump press conference, but this one really leaps out as incredibly revealing, as Trump just assumes a black reporter must be “friends” with the Congressional Black Caucus, and tells her to “set up the meeting.”

Reporter April Ryan: Are you gonna include the CBC, Mr. President, in your conversations with your urban agenda, your inner city agenda, as well as…

Trump: Am I gonna include who?

Reporter: Are you gonna include the Congressional Black Caucus?

Trump: Well, I would. I tell you what. Do you wanna set up the meeting? Do you wanna set up the meeting?

Reporter: No no no… I…

Trump: Are they friends of yours? No, get a, set up the meeting!

Reporter: I know some of them…

Trump: Let’s go, set up a meeting, I would love to meet with the Black Caucus, I think it’s great, the Congressional Black Caucus, I think it’s great.

If y’all are willing to indulge me going OT:
I’ve got palpitations and heart burn and the fidgets and whatnot, and I am REALLY anxious for my work day to be done and to get home, because this evening a man is bringing me a guitar I just bought - a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker, all original (except tuners, supposedly they came off another of the same model/period) including that wacky Vibrolux.
I am getting rather wound up and I have about four hours before I can leave…

The racism is so deep that he can’t even begin to understand it. He doesn’t see anything wrong with thinking that because the reporter is black, she must know the Congressional Black Caucus. He doesn’t get that telling the president of Mexico that he’s got some “bad hombres” is racist. It’s just who he is.

One of the things that I think would change a few of the more reasonable Republican’s minds, those I work with, would be if they were forced to watch this. The thing is, for most of them, Fox will have filtered it down to a few items that will be positive in their eyes and that’s what a lot of Republicans will see.

That’s the stock answer: “I didn’t see it.” And if you confront them with a clip of his comments, the stock answer is “I’m not going to defend everything he says.” And the press will let them get away with it, when a Democrat who tried to duck the same shit would be evidence that the president had no support from his own party.

In our new 25th Amendment Watch segment, I’d like to point out that Alexander Acosta is at least qualified to run the labor department* (he’s an attorney that practiced labor and employment law, he served on the NLRB, and worked in the Civil Rights division of the DOJ), and more importantly he has ties to the Republican establishment… meaning he’d probably be more likely to sign onto a letter saying Trump can’t perform his duties as president.

*I’m not suggesting he’s a great choice (I don’t know enough about him to say), but just pointing out that he has the kind of resume you would expect from someone being appointed to that position by a Republican president.

This is why I fear that even if the Russia thing blows up into something impeachable, the GOP will just hold ranks and remain a bulwark: because the floor of support is absolutely unshakable that they’ll be able to get away with it until at least the midterms.

Do you know what you do when you “expose” evil, Bill? You give it a platform, you give it air time, you give it an air of legitimacy. If you treat it as something to debate rather than an abhorrently noxious scum to be wiped off the bottom of one’s boot, you make people stop and say “Maybe this guy has a point.”

There were a lot of morons who thought that “exposing” Hitler would wake the German people up to how evil he was. All it did was give him an audience he could convert into more willing followers.

I’m convinced the late 60’s/early 70’s string of popular dystopian movies were the emerging canary in the coal mine for the now current generation in power (baby boomers) and their apparent fascination in seeing the world just end already.

Hard to relax when one of the loudest voices in the wingnut sphere just threw away the fucking Enlightenment as well as the Constitution and pretty much all of Church law and tradition to promote an amoral tyrant as both king and savior. We haven’t seen anything like this at all in American political history. Not ever. You have to look outside the US to find a comparable throwing off all religious and wantan disregard for truth and consistency in ideology for a comparison to Trump. Hitler /Mussolini are the obvious references, but I think more a appropriate comparison is Hugo Chavez. Trump’s Populist message spoon fed to an enraged base with no regard for social reality, reality-based economics, facts, or moderation presented in daily grandstanding on TV fits more in line with the late Venezuelan dictator than anyone else.

And when glibertarians like Bill say that he’s going to “expose” Milo’s evil, what he really means is he’s going to debate it. He’s going to treat it as just another point of view, as if wanting to exterminate any who are not racially “superior” is just a difference of opinion. As if Milo is just arguing whether or not it’s a good idea to cut back on one’s carbon footprint. Men like Milo are promoting genocide and Bill will just nod along and say that’s bad but we can’t say he’s wrong for believing that because he’s “entitled to his opinion.”

VB, article about the Jewish reporter:

A reporter for a small ultra-Orthodox publication’s dream turned into a nightmare today when President Donald Trump called on him during a rare solo press conference — and then slammed him.

The reporter, Jake Turx, had long wanted to participate in such a high-level event, even publicly begging spokesman Sean Spicer to call on him.

He asked Trump about the uptick in anti-Semitism in the United States — but only after carefully and at length reassuring the president that nobody in his own community, or on staff at Ami magazine, felt Trump personally was anti-Semitic.

Yet an accusation of personal anti-Semitism was all that Trump seemed to hear from Turx. He let loose with a flood of well-rehearsed lines:

Found on Craigslist DC:

Amazing, Huge Opportunity to Work for White House

Seeking smart, talented, brave individual who can tell POTUS how great he is, bigly. Job involves having many, many doors slammed in your face… but they are great doors, Congressional doors, so not the best, those are in the White House I have to say. You’ll have to try and set up meetings with Congress, must be a deal maker.

So let’s see what we do…

Benefits: get your picture taken with the President; parking validated, probably, will have to ask Congress; get to read classified documents in public, but must promise not to leak them; many, many trips to Russia, who I don’t deal with.

re: #78 Targetpractice

Do you know what you do when you “expose” evil, Bill? You give it a platform, you give it air time, you give it an air of legitimacy. If you treat it as something to debate rather than an abhorrently noxious scum to be wiped off the bottom of one’s boot, you make people stop and say “Maybe this guy has a point.”

There were a lot of morons who thought that “exposing” Hitler would wake the German people up to how evil he was. All it did was give him an audience he could convert into more willing followers.

If free speech by fascists is to be tolerated (and I don’t see a good way to ban it), then it is essential that those opposed to the fascists get at least equal exposure and air time to make their arguments.

We used to have a ‘fairness doctrine’ along these lines.

Edited to add: And by ‘make their arguments’ I mean make the arguments in any way that seems most effective, as opposed to being locked into a debate-school format that usually just legitimizes right wing crap.

Nope. Bush and Obama actually worked together after the election to coordinate how to keep things from getting even worse.

Obama actually thought so highly of the Bush to Obama transition that he tried to follow through with it with Trump.

Trump didn’t bother coordinating with Obama on even security briefings. They blew off the Obama efforts, and all of this shines through daily with how incompetent Trump and his people are. They simply don’t grasp what they’re doing - and what’s worse, their supporters don’t care either. They think this is all grand. They’re showing the powers that be that Trump won and is breaking up the way things are done. No more business as usual (never mind consequences of destroying the normal order).

Time for another love note from occupied America. It seems you realize you are not universally loved, and that many people actually hate you and all your works with every fiber of their being.

I am here to tell you that this hate is totally and completely justified. You are an obvious menace to all human life and civilization on the planet. Your nearly 4 weeks in office have proved that to everyone on Earth who is capable of thought and willing to think.

People naturally hate and fear such menaces.

You should know this better than anyone, since your party and candidacy are entirely based on whipping up hate and fear vs. imaginary menaces.

In hopes that this finds you suffering from painful psychosomatic (look it up) ailments caused by the conflict between your narcissism (look this up too) and a reality (you definitely need to look this up) in which you are hated, I remain

Yup.

Remember that Trump is the following:

** 70 years old
** a known quantity
** offensive simply by holding a pulse; that’s why people cast their votes either for or against him, or for Hillary^^
** polarizing like no one else in modern history
** possesses the mentality of a four year old who hasn’t been disciplined for anything
** now has the spectre of widespread corruption and foreign tampering swirling around his head, exacerbated by the inactions of Jason Fucking Chaffetz
** already at historically low approval ratings at what could be a high water mark

I don’t count the GOP rank-and-file to turn on him at any point, though. They made their suicide pact and will go down with the ship. Unfortunately for them, that will be a death by 1,001 papercuts.

At the signing, Trump called the regulation “another terrible job killing rule” and said ending it would save “many thousands American jobs, especially in the mines, which, I have been promising you — the mines are a big deal.”

“This is a major threat to your jobs and we’re going to get rid of this threat,” he added. “We’re going to fight for you.”

Republicans on Congress, especially from Appalachia, supported that argument and sought to block the rule several times before finally passing the CRA resolution this month.

“In my home state of Kentucky and others across the nation, the stream buffer rule will cause major damage to communities and threaten coal jobs,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said before the bill passed. “We should heed their call now and begin bringing relief to coal country.”

Trump as Jessup? Flynn as Kendrick?

If Santiago was ordered not to be harmed, why did he have to be transferred? You said your men follow orders, sir. You said your men follow orders or people die.

This is just asking for a total meltdown on Trump’s end. And the IOKIYAR syndrome gets to play itself out in real time.

So if Trump told Flynnghazi to lie, he is done, right?

If Trump told Flynn to tell the Russian ambassador that he’d ease or lift the sanctions, he’s done. If Trump told Flynn to lie to Pence, he’s also probably done, because it would logically follow that even if he didn’t tell Flynn to inform the Russians of his intent, he later found out about it and approved. Having a subordinate lie to the Vice President isn’t historically something that would ruin a president - there have often been frayed and distant relationships between POTUS and VPOTUS.

Trump may have hanged himself today when he said that he didn’t tell Flynn to talk to the Russians, but he would have told him to if he didn’t think Flynn was already talking to them.

From that Bloomberg opinion piece:

What does Trump really believe, if anything, on Russia and Israel and China? No one, including the State Department and other foreign policy and national security portions of the executive branch, has any idea. He keeps talking about “a deal” as if foreign policy was a one-time negotiation over a TV contract or bankruptcy procedure. Foreign policy isn’t like that.

The key to dealing with Trump is in the last statement from the reporter.

1. Trump is asked about his misrepresentation of his electoral college win.
2. Trump responds with bullshit and then asks a question to try to deflect the reporter from his accurate question.

The first reaction from anyone to Trump asking “But is was a very substantial victory, do you agree with that?” is to respond to his question and thus negating the impact of their own question.

By simply saying “You’re the President” the reporter turned it back on Trump.

Take note media.

Analysis like this is very sensible and may be a category error. I think the only thing that matters for Trump staying in office is how well he polls among Republicans in state level polling of states with Republican Senators and in district-level polling of (R) congressional districts.

Perhaps. But I tend to think that Trump is at his high water mark now. I think we are going to get a true test of the crazification factor in the next few weeks, and we’re going to get to see if he can drop below 27%.

I have a few of those 15% in my family. A few of them are still in the Republican Party because they are trying to “save it from itself” or like my Mother, believes in “states rights to handle education” - where she just wants local control for education (which I have started to turn her on - I am pro federalist at this moment in time for this). But does she agree with the GOP - not on a thing. Does she vote for them? Not a chance in hell.

My operational definition of ‘Republican’ is anyone who consistently votes (R) over (D) in contested general elections. Registration is not nearly as significant as voting, although I would like to see a steady decline in the number of registered Republicans.

Then I finally heard a reasoned voice in this area - Bob and Chez - who helped me add, “I’m good with whistle-blowing but not OK with this shit” angle to my personal political philosophy.

I presume in a perfect world this philosophy would be considered centrist (though today it may be considered learning left - ?).

I found that I preferred to visit sites run by those who were originally conservative but had seen the light. My politics has been center-left since Vietnam, but prefer those who have a broader perspective and who may help us see outside the left bubble..

Harward demanded his own team, and the White House resisted. Specifically, Mr. Trump told Deputy National Security Adviser K. T. McFarland that she could retain her post, even after the ouster of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Harward refused to keep McFarland as his deputy, and after a day of negotiations over this and other staffing matters, Harward declined to serve as Flynn’s replacement.

The only fraud was the widespread voter disenfranchisement. That is only going to accelerate, especially with the stolen Supreme Court seat. The R’s saw the future, rejected it, and are making it into the future they want, which does not include a democracy for much of this country.

They think that they will rule over a post-republic US should that happen.

Which is shockingly foolish. They are modern-day Jacobins, while they aspired to be Napoleon.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The FBI is not expected to pursue any charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn regarding a phone call with Russia’s ambassador, barring new information that changes what they know, law enforcement officials told CNN Thursday.

[…]

Flynn initially told investigators sanctions were not discussed. But FBI agents challenged him, asking if he was certain that was his answer. He said he didn’t remember.

The FBI interviewers believed Flynn was cooperative and provided truthful answers. Although Flynn didn’t remember all of what he talked about, they don’t believe he was intentionally misleading them, the officials say.

So, from my reading of the polling, the exit polling etc., the reason Trump won was that undecideds who hated both Clinton and Trump largely went to Trump. I think most of them were either disengaged from politics, or, like many on the GOP side, saw how Trump was acting and assumed that he’d calm down.

Clearly, those people made a bad bet.

What I don’t know, but suspect from current polling, is that most of those people are not favorably impressed with what they got. As time goes on, and Trump keeps acting like this, I believe that that disappointment will harden into dislike and disapproval.

Meanwhile, the ranting, raving, incoherent, bullshit-spewing guy so clearly out of his depth is - for reasons I do not understand - EXACTLY what ~33-39% of America wanted. THAT’S why they look at this frighteningly incompetent performance and think, “Yeah, that’s what a President SHOULD be!!”

And that’s who Trump cares about. Note his answer to the question about angry constituents at the Congressional Town Halls - “They are not the Republican people that our representatives represent.” He believes the only people you represent as an elected official are the ones who voted for you. I suspect he may have given up on the remaining 60% of America, and that’s what this presser and tomorrow’s rally are about. He’s found it too difficult to be President of the United States, so he’s going to be President of the Red States, and only the ones in those states who voted for him. So he’s going back to ‘his people’ for the adulation that most Americans won’t give him.

I do not see this working out to give him a second term, or even a good midterm election.

I have never received a poll call in my entire life. I presume that’s true for most people (there are hundreds of millions of Americans), but what criteria do pollsters use for making calls?

From what I remember from the classes I took on polling many, many years ago, they do try to randomize it, using auto dialers that should give them a random sample. What you have to remember is there’s 313 million Americans, about 218 million are eligible to vote, and about 147 million are registered (turn out last time was about 130 million). But most polls, even nation wide ones, include somewhere between 500-1000 respondents. So, even if we go with 130m (call that “likely voters”) and we get 1000 of them, you’re still talking less than .1% of the total pool.

Once they collect the data, they’ll weigh numbers to better match the population. For example, their random sample might over represent a certain age, race, religion, or income category and that could throw results off. So they try to weigh results to better reflect results.

So, basically, it’s magic.

I’ve gotten two in my life. Once on my cell and once on a land line when I was living with my folks. They really, really don’t get it. It’s like, “You guys had it made—everyone wanted to come here, I mean this is America where anybody can do/be anything—yet you’ve voluntarily chosen to throw it all away by letting this jackass run it into the ground? WHY, FFS??

She was telling me that everyone in her family is an immigrant and it’s freaking them out. At least the pharmacist was happy to see that I was fine with getting all the free shots available through my insurance (flu, pneumonia, & Tdap—tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis). She was happy not to be dealing with an anti-vaxxer—you should’ve seen her eye-roll when I mentioned that. People from countries where they’ve recently had to fight many childhood diseases can’t quite grok why people in America would risk letting any of those dread diseases return and strike down their children.

The local immigrants (Salvadoran taxi driver, Indian pharmacist) are still convinced that non-immigrant America has totally lost it’s shit and we’re scaring the bejesus out of them so please stop it because tey left their countries to get away from corruption & bad crazy.

They really, really don’t get it. It’s like, “You guys had it made—everyone wanted to come here, I mean this is America where anybody can do/be anything—yet you’ve voluntarily chosen to throw it all away by letting this jackass run it into the ground? WHY, FFS??

At least the pharmacist was happy to see that I was fine with getting all the free shots available through my insurance (flu, pneumonia, & Tdap—tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis). She was telling me that everyone in her family is an immigrant and it’s freaking them out. At least she was happy not to be dealing with an anti-vaxxer—you should’ve seen her eye-roll when I mentioned that. People from countries where they’ve recently had to fight many childhood diseases can’t quite grok why people in America would risk letting any of those dread diseases return and strike down their children.

I really, really don’t get it either. I think most of Trump’s strongest supporters would prefer a backwards, poor nation to a modern, wealthy powerful nation, if that’s what it took to keep it a White Christian Nation. The thing is, they’ve convinced themselves it’s ALREADY a backwards, poor nation BECAUSE it isn’t a White Christian Nation anymore, and the only way to make it back into a modern, wealthy, powerful nation is by making it a White Christian Nation again.
