— Reuters Top News (@Reuters) March 3, 2017
At the State Department, the fear of getting caught in a leak investigation or running afoul of White House positions is so acute that some officials will discuss issues only face-to-face rather than use phones, email, texts or other messaging applications, two State Department officials said.
“There is a climate of intimidation, not just about talking to reporters, but also about communicating with colleagues,” said one official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner did not respond directly to the officials’ statements but said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson aimed to foster an open climate where new ideas are raised and considered on their merits.
“There does have to be some degree of trust among colleagues in order to have those kinds of conversations,” Toner said.
There also is high anxiety in parts of DHS, officials there said.
“The atmosphere has become toxic, and that is not conducive to the work,” said a DHS official on condition of anonymity.

It now feels like he was being fed info to say as far back as 2013. It’s possible his cognitive decline really increased over the last few years. Actually, I think they did: the proof of that being the ultimate outcome of the two major post-Watergate scandals - Iran-contra (1987) and (Bill) Clinton (1998), However, the lesson(s) Republicans learned from Watergate seem to be mainly negative ones: viz.:
1. always control the “investigation” phase and its PR.
2. make the investigation focus on “criminality” for Democrats, while dismissing issues for Republicans as “merely politics”
3. use RW media to maximize “outrage”/dismissal as per point 2.
4. use point 3 as leverage to control PR with MSM
5. furiously deflect criticism with false-equivalency/whattaboutism
6. when in doubt, just stonewall.
And it seems (up to now) to have worked fairly well for them: IOKIYAR codified as a bedrock guiding principle for nearly everything.
Again, the final point of this story is that lying about the Russians is not perjury just like getting a blowjob from a bimbo is not cheating on your wife.

Smartest thing to do would be to get fence-sitters out there by playing all the soundbytes and video clips of an incumbent arguing that Hillary needed to be locked up for (insert “scandelous behavior”), then compare that to the silence or consent of said incumbent towards the Trump admin doing the exact same thing. Basically a revival of the “Culture of Corruption” campaign that worked so well in 2006. Camping in a park in Missouri once, I was searching for down wood for firewood. The park was pretty bare of it, but I saw a rather large pile of it near the edge of the park amongst a large field of plants.
I waded through the plants to get the wood I needed. Most of the way out of the plants was when I realised I had just waded through about fifty feet of uninterrupted poison ivy plants all about three feet tall. (After that incident - and a couple weeks of insanity over the results - I learned to pay better attention.)
Poison ivy finds me, not the other way round. I was walking my mother’s dog in the alley behind her apartment house in Chicago, and the dog (a pit bull) saw something and gave chase, dragging me through a bunch of poison ivy plants in the alley. (Who knew there was poison ivy in the bloody city outside the forest preserves.) Stuff grew up in our backyard in Oklahoma, which I seemed to find every time I mowed the yard (my wife insisted it wasn’t there before I moved in - however, she does not react to the stuff).

I think Trump has a fear of boats, judging from one report about his yacht that he had to sell at a loss in his bankruptcy in the ’80s. It seems he took the yacht out on the waters off Atlantic City only once. The water was choppy, and Trump reportedly freaked out, convinced that the boat was going to sink any minute. So, he demanded the pilot take the yacht back to shore, and that’s where it stayed until some rich Arab dude bought.
Maybe standing on the Gerald Ford unsettled Trump.

You’ll note it was “thugs” who hassled the reporters and smashed their equipment, not the police. They either were cops out of uniform, or locals who were willing to rough the foreigners up under direction by Party officials and/or the cops. Then, the uniformed police can come in and act like peace keepers.
Chinese cities have another kind of uniformed officer called a “cheng guan” 城管, a local ordinance enforcement officer. The guys hassle street peddlers and food stall owners constantly, sometimes resorting to violence if the people don’t clear out fast enough. They’re universally detested, because street stalls and push carts are the only means of income for most of these people.

All the folks you said have college degrees right so they were exposed to something else at some point? They aren’t uneducated then? And you’ve informed them of some other perspectives too from time to time right?
Like I’ve said, I wouldn’t listen to Fox if it was all I had. I never was suseptible to a bigoted church. They choose that life because it’s what they want. It fits generations of bigotry that they continue to choose as a family legacy even if it kills them via the policies their votes empower.
That paper has the AP stories, I’m sure the print version is a bit different but it doesn’t appear much different than the right wing Arizona Republic that we grew up with in this here big city. Yes there are other options but at some point a remote town of 124 people is going to be just that. And the people in it are going to be bigoted or not, you know there are plenty in tiny towns who aren’t.

Perhaps China doesn’t want taco trucks on every corner either. /s
There is a short street leading up to the north entrance of our university. A bus stop is nearby. Every year, there’s a line of stalls opposite the bus stop selling fried rice, steamed buns, fresh fruit and vegetables, and other tasty treats — the sellers are cashing in on hungry and poor students, of course. But, periodically, the cheng guan come and clear everyone out. A few months later, everyone is back again.
Not this time, though. Developers are putting up a high rise apartment tower and that part of the sidewalk used by the street stalls is blocked off now. Major bummer, because the fruit I could buy there was better than the local supermarket sold, and cheaper.
Progress sucks, sometimes.

No, not all the folks have college degrees; we have a significant number above average in my village, but that means out of roughly sixty adults total in the village maybe a quarter have college degrees. In the Panhandle at large, that percentage is significantly lower.
Bigotry is learned behaviour. My mother pulled me out of Maryland schools in second grade and moved me to Michigan when my father was stationed there, because of Jim Crow segregation in the schools.
Given time, I suspect that a good amount of bigotry will pass. But to do that, ya gotta have more than one message. Our paper as you note has AP stories. (It has UPI stories as well.) However, the editor is the person who decides which AP or UPI stories to print (hence nothing at all on the Russia fiasco).
If you try to talk to a lot of people outside the two tiny cities (Scottsbluff and Alliance) that don’t have cable service, you will be stared at like you have three heads if you try to claim the GOP seems to be hip deep in Russian ties: They don’t believe it because nothing here tells them about it.
Those of us with such things as Internet are not enough of the population to make a significant dent.
Heck, one of the reasons I have Internet (and pay about 5% of my income for it) is so I can get news from something other than either a hard right wing source or an extreme right wing source.

I was at sea once during a terrible storm; you’d be amazed at how much an aircraft carrier can roll and pitch.
The captain on that particular voyage passed an order banning people from the weather decks due to the danger.
One person from my division decided to go out on an aircraft elevator (the door was not completely closed) to look at the waves. One crashed over the elevator, and he was gone.
Despite the horrendous weather, the ship declared man overboard and launched search parties in helicopters (the seas were too dangerous for motor whaleboats). Never found him.

Spalding Gray in Swimming to Cambodia:
Then I told him about my perfect woman in the Indian Ocean, and he listened, raising an eyebrow, and putting his pipe down, he turned to me and said: (imitating Athol Fugard) ‘Spalding! Agree with a good deal of what you say when you expand it to the larger pan handle. Media consolidation has been a major problem that we should discuss but not just in terms that absolves white folks of continued bigotry at the ballot box. (like how long is it gonna take to die out, ya know) The black belt region suffers from the same media scarcity.

Yep!
Greets and saluts from the Resistance. The NYC metro area is finally getting some normal temps for this time of year - for 2-3 days. Then we’re right back into the warm weather. Good thing that the GOP/Trump are gutting the EPA.
And I guess Republicans don’t need the Coast Guard to rescue them when they’re on their boats or ships or yachts and get stranded out at sea because the Trump budget calls for more than 10% in cuts to the 5th branch of the military whose missions include not only public safety and protecting the navigation of waters in and around the US, but drug interdiction and stopping illegal entry into the US via waterways. But yeah, tell me again how the GOP and Trump are about making the US secure.
Oh, you mean that Trump’s going to spend $20 billion or $40 billion on a wall that Trump himself said could be circumvented with a rope or ladder. The same wall for which he’s only managed to find $20 million in funding for so far? That barely pays for a quarter mile of wall.
Texas doesn’t want the wall. Their delegation has said as much. The wall would need to be placed well inside the US in places because our treaty with Mexico puts the border squarely in the middle of the Rio Grande, and that’s simply not where you can build a wall. You can’t build a wall through Native American reservations either (and the tribe that is on the border has already said fuck no). Mexico has said fuck no to paying for the wall too. And no one wants a wall through Big Bend National Park either.
But the wall and the security stuff isn’t what’s bothering me. It’s that Trump’s twits are all pushing the moral equivalence bullshit that Hillary is a criminal so ignore what Sessions, Flynn, Page, Manafort, Stone, Pence, and Trump himself have done.
Nope. That’s not how any of this works. GOP spent years trying to pin some kind of crime on Clinton and found nothing. Nothing in Congressional investigations. Nothing anywhere. The FBI didn’t find actionable crimes because there weren’t any. The email mess was not a criminal act.
But if you’re going to complain that the FBI/DOJ/Obama colluded, then what Trump and Sessions have done so far is not only as bad as those actions, but even worse - we’ve got clear evidence of perjury and everyone is lying their asses off on who spoke to the Russians and why and where and how and what. This is a direct national security concern, and Trump’s thoroughly compromised by it. Sessions too - and he’s now the AG despite clearly being out of his league.
If only it stopped there, but no, the Trump twits want to go further to Benghazi. The same Benghazi that Congress spent years and millions of dollars investigating. Now? They don’t even want to investigate Trump and the Russia connections because.. wait, what’d they say? Oh that’s right - because it might contain criminal acts and Congress isn’t prepared or capable of dealing with those.
@joshtpm So, Gowdy’s saying that this was, in fact, a crime & that law enforcement is the proper party to investigate, not Congress? Pass the popcorn

Damn, had missed the Coast Guard budget news, thanks for posting that.
re: #152 Timothy Watson
Yeah, Trump’s budget would cut $1.3 billion from the $10 billion USCG budget. A big chunk of the cut is dropping the purchase of a new National Security Cutter; which is needed to replaced the last of the 50+ year old Hamilton class cutters that are still operating. But the cuts are severe and deep considering the mission to keep our nation’s waters safe. It directly affects trade/commerce/national security.
re: #151 lawhawk
I know that Trump is seriously incompetent, but when I get in conspiracy mode, I tend to wonder if the cuts to the Coast Guard are to make us less safe, so that there’s a higher chance of an attack.

re: #85 wheat-dogg
I think Trump has a fear of boats, judging from one report about his yacht that he had to sell at a loss in his bankruptcy in the ’80s. It seems he took the yacht out on the waters off Atlantic City only once. The water was choppy, and Trump reportedly freaked out, convinced that the boat was going to sink any minute. So, he demanded the pilot take the yacht back to shore, and that’s where it stayed until some rich Arab dude bought.
Maybe standing on the Gerald Ford unsettled Trump.

Just got this email about a rally in Northern NJ against anti-Semitism. I’m not able to attend due to work, but if you’re in the area… and yeah, they’re doing this on short notice:
In response to the disturbing rash of bomb threats at area JCCs and an increase in anti-Semitic incidents across the country, our elected officials, including Senator Cory Booker, Senator Robert Menendez, Governor Chris Christie, Congressmen Josh Gottheimer and Bill Pascrell will come together to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.
Today, March 3, 11:15 am sharp at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades 411 E. Palisades Avenue, Tenafly
While this is short notice, we hope you will adjust your schedules accordingly and join us at the JCC for this very important rally.

One of the many things that conservatives would have trouble grasping is that large scale improvements in fuel economy would help keep gas prices down.

8 Iraqi men found guilty of gang-raping German woman in Austria
God, what a despicable crime. Can’t imagine what the poor German woman had to go through in such a horrific fashion.
These 8 barbarians have given right-wing parties throughout Europe the fuel they need to further their hate-driven agenda.
I mean, wtf were these imbeciles thinking? Did they seriously think they weren’t going to get caught? And you know that these miscreants have given the same fuel to a movement that believes campus rape doesn’t exist and tend to downplay rapes committed by white native men against others.

You know guys, when you spend a whole election campaign yelling LOCK HER UP, maybe you should expect some scrutiny and prepare to be honest and law-abiding.
They just wanted in to the White House anyway they could pull it off.
Like always there is the campaign and then if you win there is the “pivot” or the actual policy you hope to accomplish.
Trump and group seem to have done the campaign and instead of a pivot it was more a double-down on the crazy and get even more crazy.
They wanted the power…nothing else.

Speaking of college republicans…
In 2010 or so our Senator Bennett was coming to my college to talk to students about college affordability. The only people that showed up were myself and the President and VP of the Student Council (both in the Republican group mentioned above). They said that vouchers (and a few other right wing ideas) were great. I then went off for about 20 minutes telling them that would work for rich white kids (me being a white kid with wealthish parents - though I looked like a dirty hippy at that time) and that if they wanted to make college affordable they at to 1) fix the economy at large and 2) use land grant college as they were created - to give free/affordable education to those in their states.
The P and VP of the student council then threatened to kick the group I was volunteering for doing voter registration (COPIRG) because we had a “ideological tint” though I was not there in that facsimile (and COPIRG is non-ideological). They demanded an apology.
… I wrote the letter of apology… the 1st draft was scathing and full of f-bombs… the 2nd draft (the one I sent) was apologetic.
I still liked the first draft more

If they didn’t have absentee ballots by mail, I’d object to a precinct located in a church. Especially since our current precinct is located in a wacky Lutheran synod’s church. You know, the kind who still holds to “the Pope is the Antichrist” kind of wacky. I’ve become more militant about church-state issues since I lived in Utah.

It takes balls to be that brazen a liar I tell ya.
I think frequent brazen denial of obvious facts is integral to the system of propaganda they’ve built.
Since I may have missed it, I apologize if this is a repeat, but, Pruitt lied under oath too.
The media spin on President Trump’s speech on February 28th has been favorable, with a surprising 57% of people who watched it saying they had a “very positive” reaction. But even 57% is much lower than how viewers reacted to speeches by Presidents Obama and Bush at this early stage of their presidency.
And the ratings for Trump’s speech were very low—down 17 percent from a speech that Barack Obama gave in early 2009.
That’s because millions of Americans are so disgusted that they have literally tuned out. Did you refuse to watch President Trump’s speech last night?
Sign the petition: I refused to watch President Trump’s speech.
really?
re: #269 Belafon
We each got one of these. For two of them plus extra burn coils and a bottle of oil (mine’s a little heavier on the nicotine than the wife’s), we spent about $130 - which is great, because I figure I’ve done away with spending about $150 per month on Reds.
And the bottle of oil cost $20 and I’m a month in and will still probably get another week out of it. I’ll cash that smoke money in on another guitar before the year is out. :)

No system is perfect. But more access is far better than restricting it because of cases that really amount to noise in elections.
On social media, Markeith Loyd’s persona — documented in dozens of Facebook Live videos — was as fluid as his latest mood. Sometimes, he was a down-to-earth, God-fearing boyfriend who was eagerly looking forward to fatherhood. Other times, he was a weightlifting, womanizing “street legend” whose goal was to be on the television show “America’s Most Wanted.”More than a month after he was arrested and accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend and an Orlando police officer, Loyd made a court appearance this week in which he debuted another version of himself: Markeith Loyd, apparent sovereign citizen.
A far-right, antigovernment group whose adherents believe they’re constitutionally exempt from U.S. laws, sovereign citizens have killed police officers, clogged courts with paperwork and refused to pay taxes.
In 2011, the FBI labeled it a “domestic terrorist movement.”
This week, Loyd — who has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder — appeared in an Orlando courtroom and refused to enter a guilty or innocent plea when asked to do so by Chief Judge Frederick J. Lauten of the 9th Judicial Circuit.
A heated exchange ensued, with Loyd interrupting Lauten and telling the judge that the government lacks jurisdiction to bring charges against him.
“For the record, I want to state that I am Markeith Loyd,” Loyd told the judge. “Flesh and blood. I’m a human being. I’m not a fictitious person. I’m not a corporation.”
“And therefore, I am going to tell you the fact, I am in due court, I accept the charges’ value,” he added. “And I want to use my UCC (Uniform Commercial Code) financial statement, my number, to write these charges off.”

The Iowa state senator who claimed he had advanced science degrees but was outed as providing a Sizzler Steakhouse management certificate cannot even produce evidence he earned the Sizzler certificate.
Can I claim I have a degree in “astro-physics” because I have a ham radio license (at least I can produce that on demand)?
IIRC, My Senator, Bill Foster is the only senator with a science degree.
This new Congress may turn out to be the most anti-science one yet, but science does have a few advocates left on the inside. One is Representative Bill Foster, a Democrat from Illinois and a former physicist. As a member of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, Foster is the go-to guy for both parties when it comes to technical scientific matters, as he holds the unfortunate distinction of being the only remaining member of Congress with a Ph.D. in science.
At the Chicago Women’s March, he reminded us that anti-science is anti-woman.

She took me to a place I hadn’t been for a while. I was old and young at the same time. Been awhile since a voice did that to me. Amy Winehouse did. Reached inside me and crossed wires. Yeah. Well, if/when Sen. Schumer ever denies -under oath to a Congressional Committee - that he ever met with Putin, THEN there might be minimal grounds for criticism. Otherwise… let’s just say Jim Hoft doesn’t have to work too hard for that SMOTI designation.
And seriously, how cringeworthy are these stupid nasty tweets Donald Trump can’t seem to help but puke out on virtually every occasion? Not to mention embarrassing to the whole country. It really is like the election-season joke that we’ve elected the Yahoo Comments section as President…..

re: #369 HappyWarrior
I have to say. I wasn’t a Schumer fan at first but I’m enjoying him.
I have to agree (and he’s my Senator!) - I had thought his main strength was more in the “internal” workings of the Upper House, but he’s looking to be a fairly decent Minority Leader. No LBJ, or even Harry Reid ( of fond memory) but still pretty good. I guess the old saw can have an upside after all: I.e. “The most dangerous place in Washington? Between Chuck Schumer and a TV camera.”
Mike Bost is a Republican congressman representing Illinois’ 12th District. His constituents have been pushing him to hold a town hall meeting—y’know, just to hold him accountable and stuff.
Mike Bost does not want to hold a town hall meeting, and he chose a very strange—and by strange I mean “both racist and confusing”—way to let people know this.
Here’s how he put it, according to The Southern Illinoisan newspaper (emphasis added):
“The amount of time that I have at home is minimal, I need to make sure that it’s productive,” Bost said Friday. “You know the cleansing that the Orientals used to do where you’d put one person out in front and 900 people yell at them? That’s not what we need. We need to have meetings with people that are productive.”

This environment kinda takes what would normally be a weakness and turns it into a strength.

It’s amazing, and discouraging, that this kind of disgusting, guilt- assuaging death farce is just part of the political landscape in the Idiocracy. If the judicial killers and their political cheerleaders really had the courage of their convictions, Governor Hutchinson would take up his pistol, march straight up to the strapped-down prisoner and shoot him in the forehead. If lethal injection is just and necessary, so is that——-and there is much less chance of botching it. They aren’t willing though. Why not?

LINNÉA CLAESON’S 10 TIPS FOR AVOIDING RAPE:
1. If you see someone who is too intoxicated, do not rape him/her.
2. If you know you will go into aggressive and assault mode when you drink, be careful with alcohol.
3. Do not go home alone at night if you think you might be going to rape someone going alone. Ask a friend to take you home or call and talk to someone all the way to your door so you can get home safely. Better safe than raping someone, as I say.
4. Choose which route you take home, maybe it’s better with the street is lit and crowded so you do not get the same opportunity to victimize anyone.
5. Carry an panic button with you, so if you suddenly feel strongly to assault someone, you can pull the alarm so it sounds loud so anyone can come and stop you and you scare away potential victims.
6. If you see someone sleeping, let him or her be, never grope the person.
7. Assume that anything but a yes is a no.
8. Join a self-defense course so you in an emergency can overpower yourself and thus defend yourself and others by not harass anyone. Maybe you can kick on something so you hurt as hell in the shin or hit yourself in the groin or larynx so that the person you thought molest gets time to get away.
9. Defence Spray is a classic. As soon as you feel you are in an unsafe situation where you might be sexually assaulting someone rips you off your spray and spray yourself in the eye so that you become disoriented and feeling bad. It gets a little conditioning too, think Pavlos dogs. Best Solution!
10. Review your values, your view of sex and consent, and your self-image and humanity, and above all: Do not act like a fucking idiot.
