See, this is how stump-ignorant Trump really is. Everybody in America, from PhD’s to high-school dropouts to kids in kindergarten, in fact probably half of the domestic pets and farm animals as well, know that being president of the United States is a tough, tough job if you do it at all competently. It’s knowledge as etched in granite as how obviously the office ages those who hold it. Yet somehow this guy who knows science better than the scientists and generaling better than the generals, etc. etc., missed the memo about the difficulty of presidenting.

corrupt
incompetent
arrogant.

Lobbyist who once sued Interior named to be department’s No. 2 official
Another day, another lobbyist gets a senior government position.
WASHINGTON
His name is David Longly Bernhardt, and he’s worked as the top lobbyist for California’s Westlands Water District, the largest agricultural entity of its kind in the nation. He’s sued the Interior Department and helped write legislation on behalf of his client. Largely because of his services, Westlands has paid Bernhardt and the law firm where he works $1.27 million since 2011.
On Friday, the Trump administration announced it was nominating Bernhardt to serve as deputy to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. If confirmed by the Senate, Bernhardt will be in a position to influence decisions that could benefit his former client.
Under a executive order signed by President Donald Trump, appointees such as Bernhardt are required to recuse themselves from matters involving former clients, although in the past, waivers have been granted for people in his situation. Zinke on Friday praised the nomination, saying in a statement that Bernhardt’s extensive experience “is exactly what is needed to help streamline government and make the Interior and our public lands work for the American economy.”
Bernhardt’s nomination, however, is already drawing fire from critics, who note that Trump, as a candidate, promised to “drain the swamp” of lobbyists’ influence over the White House and Congress. As president, Trump has placed lobbyists in key positions on his transition team and in his administration, and has adopted ethics rules looser than those of the Obama administration for appointees.
No honor among thieves? I just saw our building’s Raven being harassed by a murder of about 5 crows. The Raven’s been here for years and was being loudly unhappy about it.

We’ve come full circle. That’s exactly what Trump said hours after claiming he’d build a big beautiful 2000 mile wall. @joshtpm
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) April 28, 2017
More than 1,200 miles of the Mexico-US border is defined as what’s essentially the deep channel of the Rio Grande. There are very specific rules as to how the River must be maintained, including water rights, diverting water, etc.
A wall simply would not be built in the river. That means it’d be in the US, depriving US taxpayers with property along the river of their access (and it’d be taken via eminent domain).
What we’ve got here is another patented Trump flim-flam. He lied, of course, and his supporters bought it all.
There’s already nearly 700 miles of wall/fence, as authorized under GWB and completed under Obama. There’s already sensors and other efforts to secure the rest of the border, but a full 2,000 mile wall was just dumbassery.
It sound great to an ignorant buffoon living in a non-border state, but there’s a reason that legislators in the states affected by the fence are opposed, and that includes more than a few GOPers.
The whole notion of the wall is a serious misallocation of resources.

At this point, a Democrat could cure cancer and solve global warming at the same time, and they’d still be public enemy number one, because we as a country apparently have an endless capacity for enabling and accepting conservative malfeasance, while brooking absolutely no tolerance for anything Dem or Liberal, and that’s wrapped all the way around to where the far left makes Dems and Liberals out to be public enemy #1 too.
Feels like there’s literally nothing we can do that will ever be accepted, our existence is treated as wrong by default and therefore everything we do, say, or be will forever be fucking wrong. So all hail fucking Trump, because no matter how bad he’ll be, at least he’s not a Democrat, therefore he can be leader of forever long as Dems suffer.
Fuck everything. Fuck it all. I give up.
EDIT: And to add, it honest to god feels the very act of trying at this point just somehow makes things worse, because everyone is already wont to run screaming the entire fucking other way just so they can oppose you on pure spite and contrariansim. So the fact that you want something immediate means it’s the most wrong thing ever, and everyone has to support the opposite, and hey, things get worse and it’s your fucking fault anyway, so lets not listen to you all that much more.

But a couple things about the Arkansas executions strike me as odd. First, the idea that you can’t use poisons after their expiration dates, to kill people. That’s just weird.
But beyond that, we’re DROWNING in heroin and other opiates. People are dying all over the place of ODs from fentanyl-laced heroin. We know pretty well how much morphine it takes to kill a person. And yet we’re using drugs that may be causing pain, etc, rather than the opiates we’re spending untold amounts of money, saving people from dying of.
But maybe we should just stop?

The beauty of it is that Chet, who is the narrator, narrates more or less like a real dog, not one of those animals in most mysteries who are oh so much smarter than the humans. For instance, like with the tweet you copy here, a jar of peanut butter can take Chet off the case for hours. There aren’t many writers these days who can make me lol, but Quinn and Chet can.

Festival-goers paid anywhere from $450 for a no-frills day pass to up to $250,000 for the full VIP experience. One widely-advertised festival package cost $12,000. There were even packages that included a private yacht.
I see stuff like this and can’t help but think that we deserve civilization to collapse. We’ve earned it with the mad economic disparity we’ve allowed to happen. People live on the streets when others pay $12,000 - $250,000 to party for a weekend.

Just a few more minutes as long as you’re on the east coast.
Mentioned this yesterday:
Virginia State Police shut down its email system on Wednesday night to strengthen its defense against a sophisticated new form of malware that infected the law enforcement agency’s network at the end of last week.
State Police Superintendent W. Steven Flaherty said the agency hopes to restore email service early today, allowing computer communication with its public affairs office and updates to the Sex Offender Registry that have been disrupted since the shutdown after 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
[…]
The incident has brought together state police and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency as well as its estranged contractor, Northrop Grumman, to fortify the email system’s defenses. State police is one of the last remaining state agencies to not fully transition to VITA control, although they share responsibility for the department’s desktop and laptop computer operations.

just shuffle the deck chairs…
In Spike Milligan’s WWII memoirs, he writes about the phenomenon of ‘Posting’, in which a thoroughly useless soldier isn’t tossed out of the Army, but rather is posted to another unit, where he becomes THEIR problem. This happened repeatedly to some especially bad soldiers.
Looks like Gorka’s getting posted.
It also reminds me of something I’ve seen done in the corporate world - where an underperforming executive is relieved of the duties that actually affect the company, and is given what is clearly an insulting assignment, clothed in corporate-speak, with the goal of shaming him into resigning. In one case, the new assignment was described as ‘articulating the critical cultural norm’. It was a few months, but that guy was soon ‘pursuing other opportunities, and we wish him luck’.

Hey, guess what? Harry Truman was the last not-rich guy we elected President.
And he probably would have lived more comfortably if the presidential pension which was established because HST left the presidency in massive debt. I don’t care how Obama chooses to live his post-presidential life as long as he follows the law. As for elitist and 1%er? Can’t get anymore elitist than Trump and his gaudy gold house and acting like a million dollar loan in the 70’s was no big deal. Obama meanwhile paid off his student loans debts while he was in the Senate. This kind of “populism” really pisses me off. There’s nothing wrong with Obama being able to enjoy a nice post-presidential life.

The other thing? I’m really not cool with the idea of demonizing rich people, because that’s just the flip side of the coin of worshiping them.
We need to stop thinking of whole swaths of people as EVIL!!!!!! It’s what I was getting at with my post about the financial crisis of 2008. So many people want to see folks in jail because it was such a huge thing, but instead of imagining villains, it’s easier to understand if you look at it as everyone thinking SOMEBODY would stop them if it were a bad idea.
If we think of rich people as EVIL!!!!, we’re inclined to think in terms of punishment for being EVIL!!!!. Instead, we should think of them as people who, like all other people, pursue their own self interest, but who have WAY more power in achieving that than everyone else. Viewed that way, the goal becomes not to punish them, but just to limit their ability to make the system work for theeir benefit at everyone else’s expense.

Absolutely. And I really don’t want to hear it from supporters of a guy who is worth quite a bit of coin himself and has more than one house. I’ve often said that as a product of America’s upper middle class, I want everyone to have a chance to enjoy what I’ve had. I want a poor child on the spectrum to be able to enjoy the programs in school that made my educational experience better, I want a less well off child to not have to worry about student loans, etc. The politics of resentment left and right are not the answer. I don’t like it when Trump does it and I’m increasingly bothered by an element of the left’s alternative side of the coin.

Problem is the far left has bought this idea that “behind every fortune, there is screwing of other people.” I just hate that mentality. You’ve no doubt seen me with irateness in my tone liken what Sanders does to folks on Wall Street that the right does to folks like my own mother who made her livelihood from the Federal Government. I don’t like it at all. Wall Street needs reform, the rich need to pay income taxes in a progressive tax structure but that doesn’t mean everyone who works for WS is bad and nor does it mean that being rich is bad.

The BoBers and Jillbots (and the people in the squishy middle that they have converted to their views) will never be satisfied with anything President Obama does post-presidency short of him wearing cilices and living in extreme poverty for the rest of his life to atone for his supposed sins against “real” progressivism…and, even then, I still think they’ll bitch to high heaven that he still isn’t “pure”.

I honestly don’t want lectures about what it means to be progressive from a nearly 80 year old man who left the most diverse city in our nation for one of the most white states in the Union. You could take it a step further and state that Bernie Bros and Steiniacs hate Democrats and therefore nothing our side does will satisfy their desire for “purity politics”. I think we can write them off just like we write off the racists who vote for Republicans because they hate Black and Brown people. Even if President Obama didn’t take $400,000 for this Wall Street speech, he would have done something else to piss them off and give them an excuse to rail against Democrats. I guess they’re okay with Trump getting two terms to destroy this country.
The hypocrisy of right-wing dipshits exposed yet again, this time with Marine Le Pen:
Instead, more than half of the essay focused on what she called “a much more profound threat to the condition of women in our country today,” which she identified as “the rise of Islamist fundamentalism in our neighborhoods and in our cities.”
French feminist groups — a significant number of which have publicly rejected Le Pen — frequently say that her use of Muslim immigrants exposes a deep hypocrisy in her beliefs.
After reports from German authorities that “North African or Arabic” migrants assaulted women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve in 2015, Le Pen published an op-ed in which she wrote that “the migrant crisis signals the beginning of the end of women’s rights.”
But Claire Serre-Combe, a spokeswoman and activist for the prominent organization Osez le féminisme! (Dare to be feminist!), said that Le Pen has remained comparatively silent when reports of domestic violence perpetrated by white men have similarly captivated the public eye.
re: #140 Patricia Kayden
I really think some of them would rather behave like Republicans, forever sniping but never doing any of the actual work. You want Progessive things… seems like they either have to:
a) take over the Dems and elect “better” Dems and win elections
b) form their own party and do the ground/spade work to build it
c) stfu
d) snipe from the sidelines
and in most cases, they appear to choose option D

The problem is binary thinking again. Capitalism has to be either The Way!, or it has to be EVIL!!!!! It can’t just be a useful tool, the basis for an economic system we the people can adjust and tinker with to maximize the benefit for the greatest number. We have to either UNLEASH IT!! or DESTROY IT!!

And to be honest, there is just as much of a problem within certain segments of the left who are hesitant to call out Muslim homophobia for fear of being labelled Islamophobic. But the fear of weaponization by your opponents should never detract from doing the morally right thing.
When lives are at stake due to homophobia, you can say “The hell with weaponization” and do what you have to do in order to initiate change.

Sickening that Trump is rewarding this psychopath with a top security position. Great message to send to the world about your lack of respect for human life.

Same thing is happening with The Ignorant Tangerine. The more awful he gets, the less willing qualified (and sane-ish) candidates for posts will accept. I just met a bicycle tourist with a TBI, whose seizures are down to one every other week. He said people are always asking him, ‘What if you have a seizure while you’re riding your bike? Isn’t that dangerous?’ And he tells them, ‘What if I have a seizure while I’m cooking dinner at home?’ and he sketches out a scenario where he lands on the stove, snuffs the flame out on the gas burner, and the apartment fills with gas…’Now what?’
He only gets peace when he rides his bike, and only sleeps after all day on his bike.
I was more uplifted by his visit than by the Jehovah’s Witnesses tract given to me a half hour earlier.
He had a lizard in his map case on his handlebar bag. Plastic, but the story with it was real.

Why not? I know secular Jews and more than a few secular Catholics. Identifying with your culture of origin does not require or imply belief.
Why am I telling you these stories from a town you’ll never visit, a place you probably haven’t thought of more than once or twice in your life? Why this instead of a long primal scream about how the Trump presidency has been a nonstop assault on everything that we believed was “American” for ages?
Because we live in a mean time. We are living through a coarsening of our country that will haunt us for the rest of our lives, even if this damned presidency were to end today, just 100 days in. That’s the nuclear bomb that has gone off. One split second and we will suffer its corrosive effects for years.
Here, in this purplest of states (Nevada closely mirrored the popular vote and just went for Clinton), that meanness hasn’t gotten to everyone, and, no, it never will, yet we know darkness when we see and feel it. But there are grace notes of light to be found along the moonless road we’re on in our American night. And another way to resist is to pause to recognize the people who, despite everything they are being told, despite the growling dogs of this mongrel age threatening to devour us, find the good in each other.

Why not? I know secular Jews and more than a few secular Catholics. Identifying with your culture of origin does not require or imply belief.
There’s another term for it: ‘cultural’ Muslims. Those who are born into the faith tend to fall under that umbrella. Sure they may not adhere to all tenets of Islam, but nonetheless it forms a part of their identity that they can’t just break the shackles of.
At least that’s how I feel with my case. I don’t pray 5 times a day (only on Friday afternoon), I drink alcohol on occasion (but very rarely anyways), eat non-halal meat (as long as it is not pork) from time to time and I consider myself pretty Westernized. But I still do identify myself as a Muslim because it forms a part of my identity that I’m not willing to let go of.
Also would add this: in spite of my liberal leanings, I flat-out REFUSE to be tokenized and championed by the right wing asshats.

re: #216 Charles Johnson
The galling thing about it is that the argument he’s making isn’t even a real argument. It’s handwaving bullshit. The whole field of climate science is HUGE, and includes everything from the dead certainty of the infrared absorbtion spectrum of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, as well as the anthropogenic increase in atmospheric CO2, through the almost-as-certain increase in surface atmospheric temperature as a result, through the less certain question of the exact amount of warming, to the far less certain question of the exact climatic and weather pattern affects in any given place.
So, if one scientist is wrong about, say, how much snowfall is likely in Britain as the climate changes, he uses it to invalidate EVERYTHING. That’s bullshit. Not science, not journalism, but propagandizing.
re: #117 Blind Frog Belly White
Bingo. Letting a plutocracy form and then trying to deal with it by massive wealth redistribution is a rotten solution compared to not letting a plutocracy form in the first place.
However, that is much easier said than done.
With respect to the banking crisis, I think it certain that some malefactors of great wealth profited enormously from their crimes. That doesn’t mean that all rich people are evil or all bankers are evil, but some are and they can act with impunity in the system we have.

The matches reveal the detention facility the immigrant is housed in, custody status, age, country of birth, date of birth, race, gender and aliases. There doesn’t appear to be any way to distinguish between someone who may have perpetrated a crime beyond being in the country illegally.

Bryan Johnson, the Long Island, N.Y., lawyer who first noticed the error, called the release “reckless incompetence on the part of the Trump administration.”
“In their haste to pretend like they care about victims of immigrant crimes, the Trump administration released personally identifiable information regarding vulnerable children at risk of human trafficking and other crimes,” said Johnson, who defends children brought into the United States from abroad, many escaping violence.

I am less convinced of this, largely because money makes money. Yeah, there are people who profited handsomely from what happened. But I’m not sure I see crime there. Most of the institutions that profited eventually were also put in existential danger during the crisis itself. That smacks more of stupidity than bad intent, to me.
I fall back on “It is not necessary to ascribe to malice what can adequately be explained by stupidity”, which suits this situation in spades. Add to that Upton Sinclair’s saying, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”
If you’re making money hand over fist, and NOBODY you know is saying there’s something fishy going on, very few people are going to go looking for the downside.

Actually, real eggs dry out over time. As in months or years. They can kind of explode in the intervening period, especially if it is hot, which is suboptimal, but I made pysanky many, many years ago and didn’t blow the eggs first. It worked out fine. Mostly.
The NYT is just a company, that depends upon viewers/readers to generate advertising revenue.
We should not put our hope in such things.
As I noted some time back, to fight the Trump-ization of America we should not hope in scientists but the artists. I will extend that here to say that we should not put our hope in scientists or media companies, but in the independent artists.

Hahahahaha…okay, for those who were wondering what all this “Fyre Festival” fuss was about, wonder no more (and read the whole long, glorious thread):
I just Googled”Fyre Festival” and I can’t stop fucking laughing.
Oh, Jesus. If you live for train wrecks, STRAP THE FUCK IN.— Iron Spike (@Iron_Spike) April 28, 2017
It’s next to impossible to choose a favorite, but I’m leaning toward this:
Whistle-blowing began in March, but the festival moved ahead regardless, and attendees began to arrive the 27th.
Here’s what they found.— Iron Spike (@Iron_Spike) April 28, 2017

Interesting. I was just listening to a podcast (sinica) on Russian and Chinese nationalism. The guy speaking about Russia said that they basically grafted French postmodernism onto Euroasianism cynically: whereas Michael Foucault said “knowledge is power”; they said “power is knowledge.” The “spread as many lies as you can” because there is no truth but the Russian soul has worked remarkably well for Putin and seems to be working for Team Trump, too.
re: #264 Barefoot Grin
Thanks. Not the person I was thinking of (I’ve been gone four years).
That’s a relief. Glad you saw the post.
Here are the accomplishments of the Trump administration’s first 100 days.
A policy that limited student loan fees is out. So is a rule against internet providers selling consumer data without the user’s permission and one that prohibited states from withholding federal funds from Planned Parenthood. And so on.
Trump may have been thwarted so far in his bid to repeal Obamacare, restrict travel from Muslim-majority nations or build a wall on the southern border. But he’s been a rousing success in his little-noticed but aggressive drive to undo rules and regulations imposed during the presidency of his predecessor, Democrat Barack Obama.
“We’ve lifted one terrible regulation after another at a record clip, from the energy sector to the auto sector, and we have many more to go,” Trump said last week.
Since Inauguration Day, the Trump administration has delayed or outright repealed a multitude of Obama-era regulations that affect everything from workers’ exposure to cancer-causing substances to hunters’ rights to kill bear or wolf cubs in national wildlife refuges.
Among the changes:
▪ Employers can no longer be held accountable for keeping accurate workplace injury records for at least five years.
▪ Student loan companies can levy hefty fees on borrowers trying to get out of default.
▪ Internet service providers can collect and sell information about customers’ browsing habits without their permission.
▪ About 75,000 mentally ill people determined by the Social Security Administration to be incapable of handling their own finances won’t be barred from purchasing guns.
▪ Coal companies don’t have to obey new restrictions on pollution, nor do they have to monitor water quality in nearby streams.
▪ Federal contractors won’t have to disclose safety, health and labor violations prior to being awarded government contracts, a requirement companies have criticized as a “blacklisting rule.”
▪ Publicly traded oil, gas and mining companies won’t have to disclose payments to foreign governments.
▪ Financial advisers get a reprieve from stricter standards designed to prevent conflicts of interest when they make investment recommendations to people saving for retirement.

Yay?
Just one of many reasons I don’t want to live in the southern part of the country.
On the other hand, we had a grand total of 80 hours below freezing this “winter”. And we’ll be back down to 73 for a high by Sunday.

I heard a spot about it on Mrs. Fish’s favorite talk radio segment while I was driving home from work. That … didn’t do the thread justice by a long shot. Holy hell.

We had a few nights when it got below freezing, but not enough that sheltered areas froze. The neighbor’s flat roof had some standing water freeze, but our birdbath, which is under a tree never got ice on it. I enjoy the climate of the SF peninsula. Because I’m a wimp.

Kind of a relief. The nut job I was thinking of is still out there. (He was more of a grifter nut job than a violent one, though.)

“feral dogs”. Very entertaining.
re: #262 austin_blue
We hit 95 in Austin, beating an old record of 94 set in 1955.
Progress!
On Monday I have to drive 300 miles for a Tuesday morning meeting. I checked WeatherUnderground and it looks like a big chunk of the drive is going to be thru snow. The current forecast is for 3-5 inches in Duluth and 5-8 inches at other locations along I-35. There may be some snow at the meeting location (an unfinished building) on Tuesday. I’m hoping that the forecast changes for the better (or for the worse so that we’re forced to reschedule). I don’t feel like driving alone for hours in heavy snow.
NK seems to have a bad (sabotaged) batch of missile parts there.

I see that our population is well prepared for the rigors of nuclear warfare, a Yellowstone eruption or some other calamity.
