I’m off the hot seat with the state.
The water test I took in yesterday came back negative (second in a row, state law requires two good tests twenty-four hours apart).
Since Monday is our village board meeting, that will make things a bit easier on me Monday night.
I know most of us (including me) would not go to Christianity Today (aka “Protestant Evangelicalism’s House Organ”) to save our lives, but this article is worth the time, because these are some of the people behind Donald Trump.
The ‘Prophets’ and ‘Apostles’ Leading the Quiet Revolution in American Religion
A Christian movement characterized by multi-level marketing, Pentecostal signs and wonders, and post-millennial optimism.
Here’s the key paragraph from the political perspective:
[Bob Smietana] Let’s talk about the “7 mountains” theology, which is popular in these circles. On some levels, it sounds like theocracy. Christians are in charge of every part of life: the “mountains” of business, government, media, arts and entertainment, education, the family, and religion. On the other hand, it sounds like there’s no actual plan—aside from putting these Christians in charge. So what’s going on?
Christerson: They really believe that God is behind it all, that he is appointing people into these high positions, and that they will know what to do when they get there. They will be listening to God, and he will use them to supernaturally make America or the world into the kingdom of God. Some of the people that they claim are in these high position—like Betsy DeVos, Ben Carson, and Rick Perry—are part of the Trump administration. But they are not Pentecostals, and they have nothing to do with these groups. The movement just latches on to them and claims God is using Trump to bring in the kingdom.
It’s five short pages, worth a read, just file those names in the back of your head because they really, honestly, truly want to take over America for Jesus. And the rest of us would flatly hate it.
There is only so much bending of reality that one person can do. Hopefully Trump will be the beginning of the end of these folks
We are the laughingstock of the world, I don’t have care what prism you look through.

We hate to have to keep harkening back to the impeachment of Bill Clinton, but the parallels are too overwhelming to ignore. And in that case, Democrats essentially came to accept that everything they once denied as a right-wing conspiracy was true but that they just didn’t care that it was so.
They’re so desperate to play the “BOTH SIDES!!!” card that they’re left trying to compare collusion with a hostile government to a blowjob.
Transcripts of @POTUS calls w/leaders of Mexico; Australia were embarrassing. Yet the leaking of them feels like a terrible precedent.

re: #13 gocart mozart
If Trump people provided an honest read out of calls with foreign leaders - there would be no reason for leaks.
So, since I was reading through Nature Climate, I took a gander at last month’s issue. Some scary stuff.
Anyway, there is an exchange of communications in regards to a previous letter about the acceptance of climate science in the public and politics.
Put simply, some now have concluded, even though they believe more research is needed, that lack of information is no longer what drives denial of climate science.
I for one am in the camp that what we are seeing is a war of worldviews, and scientific data holds little sway anymore.
See also the link Kragar put up over the Fox poll about whether it matters if Trump actually broke the law.
Anyway, an anecdote: walking to the store this afternoon, in the parking lot of which is a Starbucks with drive-up window, I see a long line of cars. I walked in front of a mini-SUV, being driven by a young person, another such also in the front seat. I bet if I went up and asked them if they believed in climate change they would have said yes (most young people do.) Yet here they were sitting for probably 10 minutes with their SUV running, just to buy a cup of coffee.
There’s more than cognitive dissonance at work here. In many ways the idea of “climate change” is still too remote, too abstract, to affect human behavior.
This, I propose, is why we’re screwed.

Cognitive dissonance only leads self-aware people to accept reality. For people who don’t have self-awareness, it leads to different things, like inchoate rage and self-loathing.

re: #45 Dave In Austin

No way
The producers at Faux seem to have realized that shit has gotten real and think the best path forward is to suggest that this will all blow up in the DNC’s faces like Monicagate did for the GOP. A couple problems with that prediction:
1. Trump’s approval is in the shitter, just barely north of where Nixon sat when he resigned. He is not the popular president with widespread appeal that Bill was.
2. Monicagate was the culmination of a years long “investigation” that had meandered everywhere and made all sorts of damning allegations but ultimately turned up little. So far, the Russian scandal has kept on-point and most every allegation has shown to have a core of truth to it.
3. Ken Starr’s remarks today make it pretty clear that, even to this day, his reputation as a muckraking douche remains solid. By sharp contrast, Bob Mueller has received little but praise in the law enforcement community and efforts to impugn his impartiality have fallen flat.
4. Most importantly, Bill took office in the midst of an economic downturn and presided over a major boom as well as having several major accomplishments before the GOP finally tried impeachment in his second term. Trump inherited a healthy economy and has no accomplishments aside (perhaps) from improving his golf handicap.

The reason that Fox News personalities (using that term loosely) keep engaging in misogynistic behavior that extends all the way to sexual harassment is because the entire leadership at Fox News tolerated and condoned the behavior all along.
From the gam cams to ignoring sexual harassment all around the network, it created a hostile work environment where louts like O’Reilly and others engaged in awful behavior.
The network continues to run nonstop agitprop to cover for the lecherous Trump too. This is not a mistake. It’s a deflection and projection.
Trump is in serious trouble and now Fox is setting the stage for their viewers to ignore the rule of law because their preferred seditious bastard and his cronies are in legal jeopardy.
re: #113 Jay C
I grew up on Air Force bases, where air raid practice sirens routinely sounded in the morning (take that, Russkies!), and am somewhat famous for sleeping through anything, so my wife was quite surprised that the storm woke me.
I lived in Tucson, AZ, for many years, and Tucson is famed for its lighting storms, which are not only beautiful but always a great excuse for a party (you can usually tell one’s coming because of the preceding dust storm). I well recall Jesse Jackson delivering a “thunderous” keynote speech at the 1984 Democratic convention on the tv during a particularly crazy lightening storm. What a speech and what a party that was!
Anyway, sleep on sleep on sailor! ;-)

Most homeowners don’t own their houses outright. A few years ago, I actually crossed a line where I earned enough I could no longer get any benefit from the mortgage interest deduction but there are a lot of people that the deduction is what allows them to have a home. Republicans are going to tank a major segment of the economy if they do that.

Oh that will go over swell, I’m sure, at Republican town halls (assuming they bother to hold any): they can try to persuade their constituents that robbing them of yet another benefit (like a tax deduction that most of them use and need) is actually in their, and the country’s best interest. Because reasons. And MAGA.
The reality that wingnuts won’t acknowledge is that “tax reform” pretty much expired the moment that the “skinny repeal” bill did. Between the loss of the “savings” from the failure to repeal the ACA and the reality that they’re not going to pass much more than another CR this year, there’s just nowhere to get the money to pay for tax cuts for the rich without carving up sacred cows.
It’s a bit disorienting when the news goes from another Flynn corruption story to how lucky we are Trump’s surrounded himself with Generals.

IT expert Jared Kushner makes software pick for VA without usual procedures such as bids, testing, commentary, &c.
When the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced in early June that the agency would move its outdated EHR system to Cerner, Congress and President Donald Trump hailed the decision as the best route to data sharing between the VA and the Department of Defense.
Many people in the government and healthcare sectors were surprised at how quickly the VA made its choice and the fact that it did so without the usual request for information and request for proposal procedures that are common in large-scale IT acquisitions.
[Also: Senate demands timeline on Cerner EHR project for VA, DoD]
Now, a leaked audio obtained by Wired of a question and answer session with congressional interns led by presidential senior adviser and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner sheds some light on how the decision was made for the government to go with Cerner.

NIPTON >> Now that one of the nation’s largest cannabis companies has bought the entire California desert town of Nipton, a question remains: Will the new owners rename the place Potsylvania?
The name Weed already belongs to an old mill town in Northern Calfornia.
American Green Inc. announced Thursday it is buying all 80 acres of Nipton, which includes its Old West-style hotel, a handful of houses, an RV park and a coffee shop. Its plans are to transform the old Gold Rush town into what it calls “an energy-independent, cannabis-friendly hospitality destination.”

“TV icon Norman Lear refuses to be honored by Donald Trump”
I admire him because he’s standing by his beliefs. He knows Trump is a turd and won’t have anything to do with him. Reminds of the way Marlon Brando refused to attend the Oscars the year he was slated to receive one.

According to a reply, the music was dubbed later. It’s still a great video. And this is one of the things that makes twitter worth it (the other being that we wouldn’t know things like when Deray was arrested at that protest).

A hawser is a thick rope that ties a ship to a pier. Hawsers were traditionally used by rats to leave the ships and become illegal immigrants.
Recently, a Democrat has scurried across a hawser to become a Republican, on a ship that is slowly settling to the silt on its leaking hull.
It is the first time a rat has done this. Get a photo, mark the date, it is a ratisuiciede.

Glad to see that story is getting more coverage - I came across it as an opinion piece (it had to be filed under opinion, because the author isn’t a journalist but a political scientist) in the Dallas Morning News.
Looks like that story is starting to go big.

Well, for a long time they claimed (and some still do, as I’ve run into people telling me that) it causes epilepsy.
So people with epilepsy are destroying America and killing angels or something?
I thought according to Christian theology that angels were very powerful beings. If they can be knocked off by such a simple action by mere mortals (not mentioned in the Bible), why aren’t they gone already?
If humans fapping killed angels, then they’ve been extinct for untold millennia.
Late in the afternoon I sent an E-mail to the state water guy who’s been monitoring our village water system (and me), noting the laboratory stated on the phone that the test was clean.
He just sent me back a one-character E-mail: A smiley face.
