LYRICS

Met her at guitar shop on Santa Monica and 7th Street
The salesman tried to get my attention to sell me a Mexican Fender
She came to get her 10,000 steps and hang out with her boyfriend
But I was only trying to get to know her so I took her out to the ocean
It was hot, hot, 100 degrees
But she only went in up to her knees
She didn’t want to take off her jeans ‘cause that would be insane

My summer love, oo-we-oo
My summer love, oo-we-oo
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not

She got a bachelor’s degree in physics and a job in computer programming
That’s pretty cool for a singer in a band so I knew we would end up jamming
Later that night we went to her gig and she asked for some advice
“What do you do with your hands when you’re singing, do you just hold onto the mic?”
It was hot, hot, 100 degrees
And the trash overflowed out on the street
The heartbreak DJ stepped to me but I just couldn’t get enough

Of my summer love, oo-we-oo
My summer love, oo-we-oo
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not

Gonna fly so high
To a place that we have never seen
Ever since you came ‘round
In a greasy tee and faded jeans, woah
I got a cozy pad around the corner
Slide a little closer

My summer love, oo-we-oo
My summer love, oo-we-oo
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not
Oh she loves me, she loves me, she loves me not

Well, of course I posted at the tail end of the thread!

Here:

So we flew back to Austin today with a stop in Phoenix. While there, we met a family at the gate waiting for the flight who had been away from their home for a week. Tech workers, one child, and either his or her mother (she wore a bindi, so I’m assuming they were a Hindu family). They were trying to get back to their home in Houston, but Hobby is closed, so Austin was as close as they could get.

Bottom line:

They don’t know if they have a home left, or not.

There are areas of Houston that have never flooded before that have feet of water. This family, on faith, were willing to fly to Austin, rent a car, and drive into the unknown.

It’s a damn good metaphor for the country right now, isn’t it?

We got ten inches of rain while we were gone, but it came in seperate waves that didn’t damage us.

There was a C-17 on the ramp at Jordan/Austin today, and I think we’ll be seeing more of them. This is as close to ground zero as Air Force heavy lift aircraft can get. They are landing planes at Bush (IAH) now, but access into the city is extremely limited. The only way to get into Katy on the west side of Houston is from here.

More on Hobby airport follows.

The GOP would be pushing for the same tax cuts with or without Trump. Conservatism is a scam, not just Trump. He’s just not hiding it.

Look, he promised to repeal and replace Obamacare with a plan that would cover everybody, with better coverage, for cheaper, and then he was perfectly happy with a bill that covered FEWER, with WORSE coverage for MORE MONEY. All he wanted was a bill labeled ‘Healthcare’.

Similarly, he promised tax reform that would cut taxes on the middle class and make rich people pay more. He’ll be perfectly happy to sign a bill that RAISES taxes on the middle class and CUTS taxes on rich people. All he wants is a bill labeled ‘Tax Reform’.

He doesn’t care about the substance. He doesn’t care about the truth. He only cares about appearing to have done something.

I see the GOP leadership as being akin to the German conservatives who thought they could control a certain “Bohemian corporal” in the early 30’s to help them achieve their own goals. The GOP leadership is playing with fire by enabling Trump for their own selfish goals of spending cuts, tax cuts, etc.

Okay, so having pulled a CL, here’s the skinny on Houston Hobby Airport, Southwest’s primary hub:

Hobby was dough popped. Power out, all runways flooded, wrecked. So what will it take to get it back up and running?

(By the way, Southwest says they will try to get it back in operation by Saturday. Here’s a little pop in the head from the clue bat: If they do, it will be a miracle.)

The entire fucking facility will have to be recertified by the FAA. What does this mean? Keep in mind that Hobby is a bandbox of an airport, like Midway in Chicago, short runways surrounded by city streets.

Step 1: Clear the runways and taxiways of debris, then remove all of the mud and silt from same (braking a 737 on mud is just “Whee! The plane isn’t going to stop!”) then walk each and every foot of runway and taxiway to ensure that the substrate isn’t washed out.

Step 2: Lights. Runway lights, approach lights, taxiway and ramp lights. You can’t land at night or in bad weather without them. Every light has to be individually checked and certified.

Step 3: Visual Approach Slope Indicators. These are a set of lights on each runway that give a visual indication of the angle at which the aircraft is approaching the runway vertically. There are two two or three VASIs on each runway. If all of them are red, you are coming in too low. If they are all white, you are too high. With short runways these are crucial aids to the pilot. They will all have to be calibrated and then flight checked to insure they are giving valid data to approaching aircraft.

Step 4: Radars. All will have to recalibrated and certified. Absolutely crucial in Instrument Conditions (weather below below Visual Flight Rule conditions) i.e., bad weather. These include both Precision Approach Radars and Area Surveillance Radars.

Step 5: Comms. Obviously a no duh. There must be a seamless hand-off between Air Traffic Control (high altitude ops, based in Conroe), Area Approach Control, (low altitude ops among all of the airports in Houston), the Hobby tower, and ground control that handles ground traffic.

Step 6: Computers. A lot of this will be included in many of the above steps. each portion certified within its area of influence. But there is one more crucial computer system that is directly between computers on the ground and computers on the plane. It’s called the Instrument landing System, or ILS. A CAT III ILS allows the autopilot to bring an airplane in the worst weather automatically down the runway centerline to an altitude of 100’, where the pilots, if they can see the runway, can decide to land the airplane (or not). This is the most safety critical system at any airport, and most passengers have no idea it even exists.

When it’s working, it’s a beautiful thing. One pilot is focused in on approach speed and sink rate, the other is watching the beam and desperately trying to see the runway. It is such a delicate system that seat cushions often have to be surgically removed from assholes after the landing.

Saturday?

I’ll applaud if they manage it, but, really, if they have Hobby up in a week, it will be a Herculean effort that will be hailed in the annals of FAA lore.

It’s a valid question. Does the conservative cult train its members to be hateful and sociopathic, or does it simply work best on people who are already hateful and sociopathic? The answer is probably both.

I don’t think that’s a surprise to anyone. What surprised us all, I think, and definitely what surprised me, was just how many monsters lurked among us. Sure, I knew he probably was a little more conservative than me but I never thought I’d see him be unsympathetic people who are upset about police brutality or wanting better wages to help support their familes or a complete dick to people who just want to be the gender they feel on the inside.

re: #67 Hecuba’s daughter

We can’t know what’s in the chemical plants, because if we know the terrorists will have won.

“You know where they are if you drive around,” Abbott told reporters Tuesday. “You can ask every facility whether or not they have chemicals or not. You can ask them if they do, and they can tell you, well, we do have chemicals or we don’t have chemicals, and if they do, they tell which ones they have.”
….
“Collected under the federal Community Right to Know Act, the information was made available upon request by the state for decades to homeowners, the media or anyone else who wanted to know where dangerous chemicals were stored. But, as WFAA-TV recently reported, the Texas Department of State Health Services will no longer release the information because of the attorney general’s ruling.

WFAA reported that the department turned down the station’s request for information.

Abbott contends the state is required to withhold the data under state homeland security exemptions, because evildoers could use it to gain access to the chemicals and terrorize communities.”

I met Robin Williams. He came in the ski shop looking for goggles. He bought the most expensive ones we sold, with a built in camera, GPS, y’know, goggles that require a battery. He was pretty shy but nice enough. I can remember him walking around the base village in Beaver Creek, taking pictures of the buildings and mountain vistas. No one even batted and eye, he was just a face in the crowd. He performed that night in the Arts Center at the base area, tickets were $150.

Oh yeah, Hackman was such a great sport for that and hilarious as the RW Senator. The sad thing honestly is the right wing mindset on gays really hasn’t gotten better since 1997 OTOH the country as a whole’s attitude has IMO.

We can’t know what’s in the chemical plants, because if we know the terrorists will have won.

Abbott contends the state is required to withhold the data under state homeland security exemptions, because evildoers could use it to gain access to the chemicals and terrorize communities.”

The evildoers clearly being the residents of nearby communities who may force the plant to follow different storage policies or relocate the facilities.

Hackman has always been pretty good with comedy. I know he’s retired, but every once in a while, I find myself wishing he’d make a few more movies.

Fun fact:

In Texas, these “events” are called “upsets” and don’t count against the amount a plant is allowed to emit based on its pollution permit issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

“Upset” as in “I’ve got an upset tummy”.

Guess who’s in the polluters’ pocket?

ESPN Analyst Ed Cunningham Resigns Due to Concern over Head Injuries in Football

Former NFL center Ed Cunningham announced Wednesday that he resigned from his role as an ESPN college football analyst due to his concern regarding head injuries within the sport.

According to John Branch of the New York Times, Cunningham said the following about his decision to walk away: “I take full ownership of my alignment with the sport. I can just no longer be in that cheerleader’s spot.”

He also discussed the role concussions played in his unprecedented move: “In its current state, there are some real dangers—broken limbs, wear and tear. But the real crux of this is that I just don’t think the game is safe for the brain. To me, it’s unacceptable.”

According to the article, the majority of the citizens want the police chief out. The city council is keeping him around (the penalty for voting for conservatives, they don’t give a hoot what you want).

Also telling in that article is a claim the FBI won’t share such information with Oklahoma police departments because many have been infiltrated by white supremacist groups.
