Well, I’d like to think the Democratic Perty could find something a little more substantive to run on, but I guess this will do…..

Now why on earth did Roy Moore disappear for a year to Australia, of all places, when he ran into trouble as an assistant district attorney? Inquiring minds and all that.

Moore’s response? For two years, he undertook his own version of a walkabout. Moore, who learned to box in the late 1960s before graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, moved to Texas and trained as a martial-arts fighter. He returned to Gadsden, Etowah’s county seat, only briefly for a karate tournament, and felt at least some measure of vindication after beating out a better-qualified opponent. He then drifted to Australia, where he wrangled for a rancher who shared Moore’s love for poetry. After all this, Moore was still a pariah by the time he returned to Gadsden and went into private practice. He lost a race for district attorney in 1986. His legal career seemed washed up.

It appears he also married his wife after he got back from Australia.

politico.com

There is something weird about Roy Moore, and no, it’s not the two-ton washing machine sized 10 commandments monument, or his opposition to Obergefell, or the fact that his son has been arrested nine times. No, there’s something weird about Ol’ Roy, and I think we’re fixing to find out.

Watched the War for Planet of the Apes this evening with a friend. When Caesar… how to say this without spoiler… showed mercy to soldiers, believing they would get the gesture and back off I said “The apes are democrats!”

Same thing happened to them.

mitch ruminates

While sidestepping a question about whether he would support such an extraordinary step, Mr. McConnell recalled how, as a relatively junior senator, he pushed to oust Senator Bob Packwood, Republican of Oregon, a long-serving and powerful figure, after a throng of women came forward to accuse Mr. Packwood of sexually harassing or abusing them.

“I ended up making a motion to expel the chairman of the Finance Committee of my own party, which was approved unanimously, and he subsequently resigned,” Mr. McConnell said. “So character does count in America and in the United States Senate.”

Texas Tech won a football game today, defeating the scandal-plagued Baylor Bears 38-24. TTU led 31-10 in the third but Baylor, like every Tech opponent this year, completely dominated late play. It came up short this time though.

Playing football is one the things I regret about my youth. Fortunately I wasn’t good enough for the NFL. I would be a hero in Texas if I had but what good is that if you’re a vegetable or so dim-witted you might vote Republican?
Come to think of it, I was a Republican earlier in my adult life. Maybe I had some kind of slow healing brain injury and finally recovered completely in about 2006.

Every boy in Western PA has to go out for football. I managed to break an ankle in a gym class scrimmage. Dad looked at the bill and said point-blank to never step on a football field again!|

On the other hand, there were lots of guys in my graduating class who got football scholarships and they all believed they were going to the pros. None did and many of them didn’t even survive the cut for the college teams…

The presenter, Anuja Kamat, also covers rhythm, ornamentation, presentation and many other aspects of Indian ragas, including the two schools of ragas, Hindustani and Carnatic.

Andre was not a traitor but he was the one who was hung. Largely in retaliation for Nathan Hale. The last days of Major Andre were fascinating. Washington felt he had little choice.

I only make the point because it’s not always the traitor that gets the comeuppance as you probably already know.

I thought this was a really good story on CBS Sunday Morning: After fire, locals donate thousands of books to charity in Maryland. The article is a very brief summary of the segment on TV. Russell Wattenberg runs a charity in Baltimore where he gives donated books away. One of the people they talked to was a school teacher. It burned down in 2016 and reopened this week. It made me tear up.

So, it seems like the settled RW talking point is Menendez, and that he had sex with minors and that no one’s kicking him out of office. I don’t know enough about that story.

Actually, Sen Menendez is currently in court on trial on charges of “corruption”
:I.e. having favors done for a donor being outed as too obvious. The “sex with minors” bit (supposedly underage hookers in the Dominican Republic on a junket his donor pal arranged) has been bruited around for a whole, but no real evidence has ever been presented AFAICR.
Senate Democrats have, I think, already decided what to do if Menendez is convicted: I think I read that they will insist on his resignation (and/or just boot his ass out) - if Menendez can stretch out any appeal past January, new Dem NJ Governor Murphy will name a replacement until a special election.
IO W, the Dems, far from condoning Senators’ bad behavior, have made it clear that they won’t defend it on partisan grounds.
Comparison with Republican attitudes are welcome….

Advertisers distance themselves from Hannity after Moore coverage

realtor.com and Keurig both said they are stopping their ads from airing during the show after being questioned about the advertisements on Twitter. Neither company specifically said their decision was over Moore coverage, but only made the announcement in response to critics.

“Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are adjusting our media buy to no longer include this show placement. -MS,” realtor.com wrote to a Twitter user on Friday who tweeted a clip of Hannity’s Fox News show at the company.
Keurig said in a tweet to the president of liberal group Media Matters for America that the company is stopping its ad during Hannity’s show.

Funny thing though: campaigns to punish advertisers for running ads on disapproved-of shows always seem to be more effective than the huffy “boycotts” wingers like to announce in response. Advertisers can be obviously seen to pull ads (and affect the outlets’ revenue: reputedly, Rush Limbaugh’s show is now a red-ink generator thanks to public campaigns): but very few of them seem to have their bottom-lines harmed by RW boycotts (or lefty ones for that matter).

As far as I can tell, rightwingers simply don’t boycott well. They scream about boycotting something they’re never or rarely going to purchase (high-end sportscars, for example) or they say they’re going to boycott and then immediately break their own boycott because they apparently have no short-term memory (Disney, Budweiser, the NFL).

The Trump MAGAts are being played. Russia does not believe in a stronger America, it believes in a weaker one it can manipulate and influence. That’s why they support right wing causes: they recognize the American right is destructive.

Riddle me that Trumpkins. Especially the ones who rant about the Deep State, the most patriotic ones that also rail against the government.

Not really. I don’t need a mechanism to heat water and tapping out a refillable cup and putting a tablespoon of coffee back in it takes almost zero extra effort.

My point is that all we do to make coffee is putting coffee in a filter and heat water. Being at home in a kitchen means heating water is really easy so you’ve lost the convenience aspect with a Keurig. For an office, I get it. For home, I don’t need another large-ish item on my counter.

Let’s not forget the one where they weren’t going to buy Hamilton tickets for that weekend. You know, the “I was going to take 15 people to see a show this weekend (that was sold out for 2 more years) but now I’m not going to do it.”

Saluts and greets from the NYC metro area. (sorry)

I’m in NYC for two days. Today, sunday is my long run day.

I just ran 2 hours on the Greenway through lower manhattan Across 35th street, down the west side on the river, under the brooklyn and williamsburg bridges, up the east side on that river and back across 35th street.

It warmed from yesterday’s record cold so i didnt have to wear all the running clothes i own. just a lot of them. and i waited till the sun started to come up.

At home i tend to run earlier - around 6am. Since there are few people out it’s kind of hard not to say hi or good morning or wave to virtually everyone, the few runners, lots of bicycles and the walkers. Most are regulars anyway and recognize each other.

Today i must have waved at or said good morning to well over 100 people. I think less than 20 acknowledged anything. Big city living.

Since my 12/15 leg injury ive been working back up slowly and steadily. The first few running months were real tough, with some depressing setbacks. Now I run every day and im guessing ive reached about 50 miles a week though i dont log i have been building slowly. Last week i managed an hour and 50 minutes. Today was my longest run to date - two hours.

Overall a very pleasant and easy run. I hit auto pilot/cruise control twice - around 1:00 and 1:20. Both times i felt like i could just go forever. Runner’s bliss.

I can run that long in one day and that much a week, with no aches, pains, fatigue or other complaints. Most of my runs i dont want to end and when they do, i feel like i could easily go on. I’m declaring myself recovered.

so i’ve got a 10k test race scheduled for next weekend, and an easy half mary for mid december.

After post run stretching and a shower, i found a diner for some much earned carbs and proteins. Pancakes eggs, bacon, and several cups of coffee.

I dont feel like there’s a nap in my future. Dont need it.

Enjoy your day

A Cranky One  Nov 12, 2017 • 10:12:21am

Many years ago, I realized that I either needed to start graduate work or change fields to ensure I would make enough money to properly support my family and send the kids to college. So, I went back to college to get an electronics degree. I was older than the other students and was more motivated than many, having experienced more of the real world.

There was one other older student, a woman with similar motivations to mine: a single mom looking to provide a better life for her kids. One day I was approached by a staff member about tutoring the woman. It seemed that no one was willing to work with her. When I asked why, I was told it was because she had filed a sexual harassment charge against the head of the department, and everyone was terrified that she’d do the same to them. I’ll note she was the only female in the program (including instructors).

That answer gave me an early education as to why many women won’t confront their harassers or speak out against such behavior. She was being punished for speaking out and was treated as a pariah by everyone in the department. Everyone seemed to assume she must be lying or seeking to take advantage. The victim was treated as the offender.

I agreed to tutor her and it was a great experience. She often asked questions that improved my own understanding. We both benefited greatly from the arrangement. I’ve never regretted helping her achieve her goals.

Several years later, as more women began to join the program, more accusations about the department head surfaced and it finally became obvious to everyone that the department head was abusing his position. He was eventually fired in disgrace.

I’ll always be grateful to the woman I tutored. Not only because we both benefited from the tutoring sessions, but also for opening by eyes to how women are often punished and treated as offenders rather than victims when they speak up.

… women are often punished and treated as offenders rather than victims when they speak up.

These were/are (mostly) men taking advantage of women.
When women “complain”, who’s got the power?
The men.
If they admit, investigate, acknowledge, there’ll be no men left, it’s likely very wide spread (or at least condoned: cf alabama today)

So as a bloc they have to deny the “phenomena” even exists.
This is how they protect(ed) themselves and each other

Also: to make a “deal” you actually have to have some sort of goal to attain: for both sides, or at least, some endgame in sight as a negotiating strategy. So far, on Trump’s Asian trip (at least AFAICT, and I’ve been following the news to try to see if anything is going on besides superficial BS), we’ve seen:
- No goals articulated
- No endgame in sight
- No positions articulated
- No “negotiation”
- Apparently (unless I’ve missed something) no plans to even start negotiating anything.
- No strategy outside of promoting Donald Trump

And of course (as I’ve read a bit of) RW media are already grumping about MSM coverage of Trump’s trip and why they aren’t praising his “accomplishments”…..

Of course, I’m sure some obscure lefty blogger is going to get all het up over this inane “boycott”, so it will probably get endlessly recycled (by the wingnuts) as “validation”. It’s really hard for me to be sympathetic to them. I feel bad for Rodriguez of course.

I’m not sympathetic to them at all. They will continue to watch FOX, and soon, they will convince themselves that deporting their neighbours and breaking up families is right and appropriate. They may even find a reason or two to demonise them. And they will vote Trump again.

These are the same people that think child molestation is fine if their TV tells them it is. They will happily rationalise their evil, especially once they have even less reminders around them that people can look and be different.

Been behind on my political reading this week: too much stuff for work! Took a quick moment over lunch and found in today’s posts:

washingtonmonthly.com

We know that saving money ((Tillerson gutting the State Department)) isn’t really the point here, anyway. Donald Trump doesn’t care a whit about reducing the deficit or saving taxpayer dollars. He sees a liberal “deep state” conspiracy against pro-business white people operating in various government departments, especially those dealing with foreign policy. He doesn’t understand why they exist or what they do. His actions are indiscriminate and punitive, arising from both ignorance and malice. It’s a scandal that in a sane world would occupy the political world for weeks.

But we can’t even focus on it even for a few hours, because the President is too busy dishing out schoolyard taunts to nuclear-armed dictators and the Republican Party is set to send a child molester to the U.S. Senate. The situation is both terrifying and farcically absurd.

boomantribune.com

Europe’s fascist movement had enough support here in the States that even after the war some people were punished for having been “premature” anti-fascists by taking the Second Republic’s side in the Spanish Civil War against Francisco Franco’s Falangists.

A couple of things about this, though. We know what resulted from the fascist takeover of Europe. The Poles certainly did not fare well. We also got our act together and fought against the fascists. And, when we were done, we started a decades-long process of cleaning our own house while rebuilding the conquered lands in both Europe and Asia so that we wouldn’t have to fight again.

So, we may not have purest history, but we can be proud and unashamed of our record. Our leadership put us on the right course. …

… Today’s Republicans need to take a hard look at that history, because it damn well is possible to do the right thing even when your base will punish you for doing it.

And Jay Rosen on the reason I have personally cancelled my online subscription to the NYT, and find WaPo still pretty decent.

Moore offered to watch Corfman while her mother went inside. The two chatted, and Moore asked if he could call her sometime. Corfman gave him her phone number,* she says, and the two made plans to meet. Moore picked her up around the corner from her house and drove her to his home.

No, I don’t think I have the problem here.

Hate-tweeting memes at people is not, despite what you may think, a powerful form of expression. But if it makes you feel better, that’s cool - it’s just Twitter. Adding a gratuitous sexual comment that has nothing to do with the matter at hand is not only unnecessary, but crass, and reminiscent of the sexual bullying that women online face everywhere, where men feel that adding some sort of grotesque sexual imagery to their disagreement is fine, simply because their target is a woman.

When Coulter engages in her ritual devotion to spewing anti-LGBTQ slurs, she’s insulting and demeaning all members of the LGBTQ community regardless of her singular target at that moment. In your response to her you’re shitting on women and blacks as your remark strongly suggests that there is something somehow wrong with a woman having sex with a black man.
