Twitter Begins Shutting Down White Supremacist Accounts - Including the “Britain First” Leader Retweeted by Donald Trump

Internet • Views: 51,423

Today is the day when Twitter said they’d begin enforcing new policies designed to shut down users connected to white supremacist and Nazi organizations (and presumably other types of hate groups as well). A quick look around some of the worst corners of Twitter shows that they’re beginning to make good on this promise.

Already suspended: American Renaissance, Occidental Dissent, and the Traditional Worker Party — all white supremacist groups.

And interestingly, Twitter has also suspended the account of @JaydaBF, one of the leaders of the far right hate group Britain First, whose vile propaganda videos were recently retweeted by the malevolent toad in the White House.

Let’s hope it doesn’t end here, because there are still a disturbingly large number of outright Nazis goose-stepping around on Twitter. Hate accounts that have not been suspended yet include @DrDavidDuke and @RichardBSpencer.

Considering the very strong argument that Nazism doesn’t really fall anywhere on the traditional political spectrum, the idea that banning them from Twitter will lead to a “slippery slope” is ridiculous.

I despise Nazis but I’m not sure how banning them solves things… then you go down a slippery slope where you start banning all of the thought that isn’t dead center

Go talk to them at one of their get togethers. Feel free

They have an absolute right to their own messaging service if they build and maintain it.

They have no right to shit all over someone elses

re: #7 Charles Johnson

It’s like…this is getting to the point of the ‘how can we remember the history of the civil war without confederate monuments?!’ bullshit. We know they exist, we’ve seen them make their views public. Taking the position that they’re entitled to a platform simply enables them and gives them a megaphone. Free Speech doesn’t entitle you to a platform, and the gov’t isn’t going around saying they can’t say shit whatesoever. So…yeah, fuck that shit that this somehow keeps us from ‘knowing our enemy’.

Page-plugging? Yeah, guilty as charged. But I just wanted to shout-out the comment from Nines09 on the Palin piece I posted yesterday, and the smart, insightful follow-up about the cynical use of PTSD to excuse violence by Track Palin, without commensurate attention being paid to actually, you know, DOING anything to actually materially Support Our Troops:

re: #4 nines09

“….Not with funding or actual benefits and the ability to actually get those services, but flag pins, and prayers, and hats with snappy sayings on them, and how about a free McDonald’s Happy Meal. And T shirts. Yes, T shirts with flags and stuff and guns and tanks and jets and bombs and explosions…..

… and eagles and Jesus and more flags and AR-15s …

Yeah, I get sick of the widespread conflation of symbol with substance. Flags and eagles and pocket copies of the constitution are easy to love. They don’t demand anything of you. Just wave them around, put them on a Twitter header, and you virtue-signal that you are a True American Patriot.

In addition to sounding like a protection racket, this sounds stupid because NATO was about having US forward positions against the USSR—thus the defense of the USA. I mean, the calculation was all about the the most likely initial move for Soviet conventional warfare *and* about surveillance and first-strike options in a nuclear exchange.

What bugs me is how eerily this mirrors the ressentiment that the Russians have nurtured about “saving Europe” from Hitler, Napoleon, and the various “Tartar hordes.” ETA: and thus fell entitled to order Europe around, lean on neighboring state, and mock more progressive nations as weak and effiminate.

Remember when people said Trump didn’t understand how NATO is funded? Now he’s explicitly calling for it to be his way — money paid to the US.

This whole thing is indescribably stupid. Each NATO Nation brings its own forces to the table: that’s 90% of NATO assets. The other 10% are bought together with a common pool of funds, determined essentially by…the size of the country’s economy: its wealth. Pay the US for what? It’s completely incoherent, and now Mattis and Tillerson get to have more janitor duty.

re: #91 The Ghost of a Flea

I realize that the mission, structure, financing, etc. of NATO is a matter for serious discussion: but that seems to disqualify Trump (like it does for most things) from even opening his yap about the subject. What’s the game here? “Pay up or else?” “Or else” what, exactly? We withdraw from/dissolve NATO? Is anybody in the Administration likely to have thought this through? The Moron likes to surround himself with military types: has he bothered to ask any of his star-studded advisors what exactly taking an adversarial stance against NATO might entail? (Especially as it seems to be being pushed as adversarial primarily on monetary grounds!)

I know it may be paranoia, but ISTM that Russia will come out the big winner here if the US takes steps to disassociate itself from the NATO/European defense alliance. I’m sure that if the Idiot-in-Chief makes any concrete steps towards pressuring the Europeans, Putin will be having his generals dust off “Plan X” - or whatever the code is for sending the tanks rolling into Ukraine - ASAP….

So, the Yam was on teevee bragging about how the CIA gave Putin a heads-up or something about a possible terrorist attack and how thankful Putin was, etc. Is the Yam demanding that Russia cough up some dough for this intelligence we supposedly gave Russia, since the Yam is all about charging our “allies” for our services.

It makes sense if you want to destabilize an alliance of the few countries in the world where there’s semi-transparent governance and actual effort is put into protecting the rights of citizenry.

People keep saying “it will benefit Russia,” but it also benefits oligarchs, worldwide, in general. It also benefits reactionary movements that hold universal rights in contempt because of religious, cultural, or racial biases (to say nothing of gender or sexuality), which is another trans-national interest.

I would like there to be a tsunami next year. But despite early indications, the crude political calculus is that:

1) While what the GOP has done in 2017 is unpopular
2) Trump was unpopular too
3) Trump got elected by heaping the reflex-hatred on Democrats
4) Hey lookie! We just got $700 MILLION from the Kochs alone!
5) GOP buys All The TV Time to runs ads lying about Democrats
6) Low-info voters go “Meh. Both sides” and don’t show up
7) Evangelicals do as their told & vote GOP
8) GOP wins landslide, takes 60-vote majority in Senate, thus filibuster-proof
9) Trump really goes on a rampage
10) Putin smiles

I think Ms. Palin did directly usher in the degenerative rhetoric and embrace of willful ignorance that we have seen escalate since. She made it okay and found success doing it. Filters were switched off with nothing off limits any longer. Nazis emerged forth into the public where they could spawn followers.

Yeah, McCain, you did this.

In some people they do. Instead of acting as depressants, they have a reverse effect and cause a person to become fired up like they are on speed. Add in the alcohol and that type of person becomes completely unstable.

How do I know? I have a friend like that. All drugs seem to have reverse effects on him. Get him drunk and he can get mean and fired up.

Regardless of what else is happening, it’s ALWAYS, and I do mean ALWAYS, a better day when fucking Nazis are undermined and excluded, even just a little. But more is better. All of them would be better, but I’ll take what I can get. They think dressing up in suits and polos and khakis is going to fool people. It has, but mostly idiots. I am just stunned, and I know I shouldn’t be, that we’re having to deal with FUCKING NAZIS in 20fucking17. FFS. And there’s actually an arguement about not hurting their precious nazi fucking snowflake feefees. Just no. NO. NOPE.

Well. Duh. That’s usually how trains go off the rails. Either that or some (severe) defect to the tracks (but since there’s no switch shortly before the crash that would be peculiar - not much to go wrong with a plain straight or slight bend).
I sincerely doubt they’d be driving a brand new route with poorly maintained equipment so that’s out and yeah, that means it likely hit something. By sheer virtue of elimination.

So if I were to make up some likely-sounding theory in an attempt to get some attention now and perhaps a lot more when vindicated that’s what I’d go with. It’s firmly in the “no shit, sherlock” zone, really.

McCain, I guess. But it looks to me like the GOP is all in. The way I figure it, passing this hideous tax plan will help us defeat them so that when Democrats regain power in 2021 we can hike taxes on the rich to pay for stuff like universal healthcare and free college tuition.

Also, has anyone seen anything indicating Mueller is investigating Stein?

Texas next?
Alabama to freeze enrollment in children’s health program in two weeks

Alabama will freeze enrollment in its children’s health insurance program soon if Congress doesn’t reauthorize funding for the program.

The state announced Monday that it would no longer enroll children in its “ALL Kids” program for low-income children, starting on Jan. 1, because Congress has not yet reauthorized funding for the program.

Federal funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) expired at the end of September, but states weren’t expected to run out of money until the end of the year or early next year.

Some states have already sent out notices to families telling them their coverage might be canceled if Congress doesn’t act soon to reauthorize the program.

I was pleased to see that the little girl in south Texas will get the blanket she asked Santa to bring her, as will the 600 other children in her school. She will probably also receive the rest of her Christmas request, some food, at least temporarily.
But there are 4 million more poor children in Texas and they need food and health care every day. I am afraid that Randians and other Republicans, damn them, will use this heartwarming story to justify their absurd claim that private charity can take care of these needs if only government would get out of the way. Btw, the reduced tax rates the assholes cherish actually reduce the incentive for deductible contributions, just as they reduce the incentive for job-producing capital expenditures.
We need radical systemic change. The best way to bring that about is to get out the vote and educate the voters about just how badly they are being victimized. It is a tall order, but hand wringing and balling up into a fetal position will not stop the triumphant march of greed and arrogance.

Fascinating chart, but isn’t Australia commonly considered the world’s smallest continent, rather than its largest island?

Kinda splitting hairs here, but aren’t both the Aussies and the Greenlanders happy with the current layout??

I’m not splitting hairs with this.

The Pentagon holds climate change as one of the greatest threats to global stability. I think they’ll balk.

Just tell Trump climate change was removed and leave it in. He doesn’t read and doesn’t care to know what’s in any policy, legislation, etc.

I get the feeling he doesn’t even know what he is saying in his speeches. It’s just words he can’t even read well.

The Australian mainland is commonly considered to be the largest island.

??

By that implied definition, all continents are islands.

Got told I wasn’t a real socialist the other night because I don’t like the puritopian idiocy that infests what little that passes for a serious left in America. < shrug > The Democrats are hardly perfect but I’d rather a step towards the real goal than a step backwards in the name of an illusionary purity.

I wish I could go back to the way I felt about Bernie Sanders when I first started hearing about him, because I liked a lot of what he was saying then. But now I just get angry when I see him pontificating about issues, because in my view he was a big factor in putting Donald Trump into the White House.

The issues he raises are valid ones, but Bernie the human being has burned all his bridges with me.

2 years ago, I thought Bernie to be a refreshing change of pace because he was promising to campaign on the issues.

Then he decides to go “purity pony” and it went downhill from there.

He never did have any working realistic plans to deal with anything he was complaining about, and never ventured any ideas or opinions outside of a very narrow focus. He was always a one trick pony, a clown-shoes candidate for the hip lefty or “left libertarian” (lol) who started paying attention to politics 5 minutes ago.

We’ve a president who last year went around talking about how “frail” and “weak” his opponent looked, now using two hands to drink water and walking around like he’s in a daze. But then again, the same guy sold us on his being “successful” and he’s been in and out of bankruptcy courts for years.

By that implied definition, all continents are islands.

Australia and Antarctica are the only continents that don’t share a (natural) land border with another continent. Think North -South America and Europe-Africa-Asia. (And, not too long ago, Asia-North America, connecting all of them into one contiguous land mass.)
