Somewhere in the underworld there’s a Hieronymous Bosch crown-wearing bird-headed demon pooping out fully-assembled lettuce wedge salads, blue cheese dressing, salad plates and all.
From there a sinister cabal distributes them throughout the world. Beings that ingest souls for sustenance, like commodity traders, need the fiber but can’t tolerate the spiritual purity of kale.
More gunfire. More fireworks. Dog is going crazy. I have to fall asleep soon, have to wake up at 5:30. FML.

Well, here’s a salad that puts Trump’s Outback Clone to shame…The famous Molly Salad served at Taylor’s Steak House in Los Angeles. Iceberg wedge plus diced Vidalia onions, beefsteak tomatoes, Maytag Blue Cheese with EV Olive Oil and Vinegar. And dust that pepper on it!

Okay, I’ll shred my own soul and concede that looks pretty good.
At 9:55 CST we wandered out to see the fieryworks in Austin. 28 degrees, 19 wind chill, snow showers. Nice show! Then we ran back to the house, thawed our feet, and finished watching Get Out, which was killer bee.

Okay, I’ll shred my own soul and concede that looks pretty good.
Trade the iceberg lettuce for some fresh leaf lettuce and baby spinach and it would be yum.
Yeah, sorry. You lost me at Blue Cheese. I tend to think of wedge salads as having Thousand Island Dressing or Catalina, because that’s the era I think of them coming from.
“This lettuce wedge salad is great” is the 21st century version of “Magnificent! Just look, Your Majesty, what colors! What a design!”

Ok first day of 2018, whadda ya got?
The AC in my house is heating upstairs but not downstairs. It’s 16 outside, which is quite cool here in Dallas. So, right now, it’s 68 upstairs, and 62 down. I think the valve that regulates flow isn’t opening for downstairs. That kind of sucks because 1) I had it replaced about 5 or 6 years ago, and 2) when the upstairs doesn’t need the heat, the unit is pushing against the valve. Hopefully, someone can come out today and look at it.
re: #103 Colère Tueur de Lapin
It’s 16 degrees just a bit north of Atlanta. Windy, gray and cold. Blurgh. Our NYE was quiet, except for the obligatory gunfire (why America? Why?) and fireworks. We hung out, had some Prosecco at midnight and watched some movies.

Mine are in the ground and about 2 yrs old. I have always had lavender here, I bought a dozen teeny plants 19 yrs ago and planted them in beds around the patio. They grew really well there, but after 17 yrs or so, they began to die back way too much to clip back and hope for regrowth. My gardens and yard are a mess. We didn’t even rake leaves or anything yet. The year got away from me and clouded up with too much sad stuff for me to focus on it. My spring is going to be busy.

good new year to all
i’m coming out of my coughing induced haze. more oxygen to the brain maybe and i can focus on some stories
this one, the swatting death of Andrew Finch is burning me. Here’s why and it won’t take long:
Forget that SWAT didnt know. let them assume the threat at the house was real
they surround the house - SWAT
Andrew comes to the door. let’s also forget his confusion, fear and all that
neither side really knows what’s going on - forget it all
He “reaches for his waistband” (whatever that means) and bang. That’s it.
My question:
Surround by SWAT
X guns trained on him
How long could they have waited to see what he was really doing?
Which individual cop was threatened? Who felt his life was so in danger he could not have waited? 1 second? 5?
Say he actually did start to draw a gun - kill him then.
SWAT - guns, armor, helmets, shields - every tactical advantage there is
maybe determine it was just a twitch or whatever
How does a move toward the waistband SURROUNDED BY SWAT justify that immediate, instantaneous and irrevocable decision to kill without verification?
BEFORE getting into the fact that they go in assuming the threat is real and that they are at the right place
1 second more, 5? 10? no cop’s life threatened, no one dead
Good Morning!
And Happy New Year.
I hope 2018 brings a good year and some decent political results.
I forgot to say that last night…I went out to check out the midnight noise and came back in and proceeded to nod off.
Pretty quit evening as far as the big firecrackers and gun shots. Seems like the bitter cold cut that back. You could tell, there was a 2 minute barrage and then it went mostly quiet. Usually it lasts 15 minutes to a half hour.

I must have a dozen fluffy mooching birds at the bird feeder. I like the hull-less sunflower seeds, as they don’t make a mess, but a little more expensive. These slacker birds sure like their handouts. The cats would sit in their cat tree by the window and bark at them, now they just lay in front of the wood stove.

OTOH, it appears that it may soon be open season on cops, if too many people copy the guy in Highlands Ranch.
Because it’s not like intentionally setting off a noise complaint to draw cops into your free-fire zone is beyond the average MAGAt’s frame of knowledge…

This isn’t the first time assholes have done this sort of shit to someone they have issues with. If SWAT teams around the country aren’t aware of this shit, then someone’s failing to do their job.

I still have a feeling he is playing this much golf to escape the pressure he is under.
Maybe his golfing is picking up because the pressure of Mueller is also picking up.
If he refuses to come off the course some day soon we will know it has all gotten to him.
Here is a suggestion. Resign. Play golf and go away.

I bet this is his normal. I don’t get why anyone would think for a second this is a guy who spends 8-12 hours a day actually working. He inherited wealth and has used his connections to find people to work for him (most of whom have to be more competent than he is or we’d have never heard of his stupid ass), including his kids- who I highly doubt spend much time working either. He’s not a smart businessman, barely made it through business school, and is mostly it seems a figurehead for his business “empire”. So what else would he be doing? Charity work? (hahahaha, oh, look, I made a funny joke)Helping raise his young son? I’d bet he’s pissed because being President interrupts his fucking golf routine.

I agree that primaries are a consideration, I also would acknowledge that getting their agenda is a consideration. But the way they have drawn back, refuse to pass anything protecting Mueller, most refuse to comment on anything, Nunes is hosting secret plotting sessions, all are standing by as Trump tries to destroy the FBI’s reputation, Lindsey Graham’s turnaround, it all smells to me of a fear that is more primal than political calculation.

I think we have to acknowledge the role of the NRA, right-wing media, and its political cover for our outa control gun culture. LEOs have to assume that everyone is armed and dangerous for their own protection. Hyper alert and ready to fire. This is directly causative of deaths of innocents, such as this man and so many others.
Happy New Year from Glasgow!
Was pretty quiet at our end, compared to what I’ve gathered from some of you upthread: spent Hogmanay (As we call New Year’s Eve in Scotland.) in the house with BBC Alba’s Hogmanay Ceilidh on the telly. Best Hogmanay show in Scotland, excellent musicianship from Manran, although the Glenfinnan Ceilidh Band were no slouches either. The only noises outside were the of burst of fireworks, and the odd burst of singing drunks in the streets outside after midnight.

Oh, definitely, hence the singing after midnight. It’s not as common as it used to be, as Hogmanay parties tend to be more of a get together of friends and family these days, so there’s less need to travel between houses or venues, but it still is a tradition, usually between nearby neighbours that are having their own parties.
You know that tradition about first foots bringing a lump of coal as a gift? Our local branch of Lidl’s actually had a small open bag of coal at the exit on Dec 31st, so that departing customers could get a lump as they left for their first foot gift. Me and the other half paid a visit to the next door neighbours in our close, only in this case the gift wasn’t a lump of coal, it was use of a corkscrew in order to get a bottle of wine open.
Happy new year!! May this be better than we expect.
This Christmas season has been a bit of a downer, if expected (our Christmas season doesn’t end until at least January 6). Few people decorated, and the air just doesn’t feel like Christmas.

Lawfare blog just posted a series of interesting essays:
I’ve been reading some of the essays. I notice Mr Trump (mis)quoted one of them, which is pretty funny, considering this essay said about Trump:
Trump has another personality liability for the project at hand, one that fewer people notice: He is ultimately a wuss. He talks about his boldness all the time, and a lot of people—including his enemies—lap up the self-description. He likes to talk in sweeping, grandiose terms about the things he is going to do and the things he has done. In practice, however, he’s actually very cautious most of the time. Think about it this way: Leaving aside Trump’s words and claims about himself, do the actions of his first year in office generally bespeak boldness? Yes, he left the Paris Climate Agreement. And yes, he recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. And yes, he did the travel ban. But think about all of the bold things Trump has promised and backed away from: scrapping NAFTA and waging a trade war against the Chinese, ditching the Iran deal, walking away from Europe, draining the swamp, and confronting conservative orthodoxy on taxation.

Did he back away from those because he’s a wuss, or is it (more likely I think) that he just never intended to in the first place, he just said what he thought those potential voters wanted to hear.

Richard Baris, Rasmussen Reports
Trump’s First Year Accomplishments Compiled In Shockingly Long List: “Looking back on President Donald Trump’s first year in office, he has compiled a shockingly strong record and long list of accomplishments. As was also the case with his rise to the presidency, President Trump has broken several records for a first-year commander-in-chief and fulfilled many of his key campaign promises. Now, that’s not to say he hasn’t had failures and it’s not to mask the fact that many of these accomplishments were unilateral. But it is also true that President Trump has faced an unprecedented level of never-ending obstruction throughout the year. He was the first president in memory to be deprived of the ‘honeymoon’ period after Inauguration Day and, frankly, opposition at times has risen to levels that could arguably constitute downright treason.”

GOP members met on the eve of the inauguration, 2009 During the four hour meeting:
The senior GOP members plotted to bring Congress to a standstill regardless how much it would hurt the American Economy by pledging to obstruct and block President Obama on all legislation.
These Republican members of Congress were not simply airing their complaints regarding the other party’s political platform for four long hours. No, these Republican Congressional Policymakers, who were elected to do ‘the People’s work’ were literally plotting to sabotage, undermine and destroy the U.S. Economy.

This early automatic weapon was rather bizarrely designed to fire round bullets at Christians and square bullets at the Muslim Turks.lets at the Muslim Turks. Square bullets were believed to cause more severe wounding than round ones, and according to the 1718 patent, ‘would convince the Turks of the benefits of Christian civilisation’.

Never mind that no one bought the worthless things or that our founding fathers would have even heard of it. The 2nd amendment was designed to require all white male property owners (ie voters) to own a military class longarm because the whole militia fantasy was that they could replace the standing army that they feared after the English Civil Wars (aka “New Model Army”) as a threat to their freedom. If they were doing it today, they would have, I believe, happily authorized AR class weapons. That said, support weapons (MGs, mortars, artillery, armor, etc) would have been stored in centralized armories that required federal orders to open and the weapons in civilian hands would have been subject to regulation and training along the lines of the Militia Acts of 1792 & the Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States : to which is added, an appendix, containing the United States militia act, passed in Congress, May, 1792 printed in 1794 by Baron (Von) Steuben. archive.org
Now modern equivalents would be different but the acts and this manual show the detail to which the militia member was supposed to be trained in order to have that military grade long arm. That’s what most of these 2nd amendment nutjobs forget.

re: #210 Eclectic Cyborg
The Puckle gun was fired in a similar fashion to a conventional flintlock musket; however, after each shot, a crank on the threaded shaft at the rear would be unscrewed to release the cylinder to turn freely. The cylinder would then be advanced by hand to the next chamber, and the crank turned back again to lock the cylinder into the breech of the fixed barrel. The flintlock mechanism could then be primed for another shot: it was triggered using a lever which was separate from the crank assembly.
And, then it was disassembled and reloaded. It’s a musket with some bells and whistles.
It also had a Christian and Muslim configuration. Square bullets for the Muslims to cause Mose damage and show that Christianity was better. Uh, ok.

New reason for tears.

And with hope for not long.

Mostly “never knew”. It’s not like the NRA has done any real historical teaching and groups like Appleseed have been far more interested in their propaganda version of the ARW than history.

The Aztecs had a theology that explained why they believed that the sun would die or the rain would not come without the various types of human sacrifice they practiced (flaying children’s corpses so that priests could wear their skins to propitiate Tlaloc is possibly the worst).
The 2nd amendment fools don’t even have a false mythology to give these deaths any meaning.

Love black-eyed peas, but my blood thinner doesn’t. So many things I like that I have had to kick out of my diet because of these damn pills.
re: #249 William Lewis
I’m afraid I have to disagree with that.
The American faith feels the same way about the universe as the Aztecs.
Thanks to their neo-Calvinist theology the American faithful know they are the last bastion of goodness in the world and that they are constantly at war with ‘evil’. Evil being any idea they don’t understand and/or dislike.
This is why I misquote that Tree of Liberty bit. The American faithful believe if the blood stops flowing the Tree of Liberty will die and evil will win.
To me the similarity between the American faith and the Aztec is striking.

If Da’esh gets involved and starts creating even more bloodshed with their attacks like in Tehran, you know VERY well that Iran will have an even greater pretext to crack down forcibly…and put the West, and Trump, in a tight spot.

I’m a little disappointed with the lack of heat - I put in two unseeded jalapenos & it’s not enough. I just chopped more fresh for the top. I think the grocer had weak jalapenos.

They were up in Columbus. I think we got to 141 or so. Of course they city has grown since the late 80s/early 90s when it was pretty bad…but still a sad stat.
As far as Chicago…that is such a common thing to mention to a Trump supporter the truth doesn’t matter one bit. It’s Chicago.

Daesh may soon be said to be involved whether that ever really happens or not. Unsurprising, but I’m upset at how that government jams cell phones and essentially silences the witnesses at least until its over. Very troubling.

re: #162 Old Liberal
I wonder how compromised the Republican Senators and Representatives are vis a vis Russia. It seems to explain their behavior better than simply getting their agenda passed. The idea that some are being blackmailed seems likely to me.
If Russia was smart, they’d make sure more than Trump himself was compromised. My bet is it’s the majority of the GOP. Russia has all their emails/communications as well. If they don’t cooperate by protecting Trump, poof. It all comes out.
Happy New Year from sunny CA.
The house is un-Christmased, with the probable exception of one little item somewhere I haven’t noticed and will have to deal with late, the new calendars are in place and I’m ready to hide under the table from whatever the New Year will bring us.

I used a jar of copycat Rotel recipe tomatoes in mine, made using my own jalapenos and serranos. For service, I add a healthy sprinkle of creole spices to my bowl, Mrs J lacking a desire for any heat cramps my whole pot seasoning regime. I sneak in as much heat as I can and I think her tolerance has increased from”ketchup is hot enough for me” to “half a jalapeno is OK, but NO MORE”
