From Politico today, a story about how confronting the FBI is a “suicide mission,” comes this anecdote about how in 1973, FBI agents marched into the White House while Nixon was away to start seizing evidence:
Caught in the web of Watergate, President Richard M. Nixon returned from Camp David and found a skinny young FBI man standing at attention down the hall from the Oval Office. Screaming in rage, he grabbed the agent by the lapels. “What the hell is this?” he shouted.
It was the rule of law challenging the power of the commander in chief—and the beginning of the end for Nixon. He knew that he was doomed. Within a year, the president would be named as an unindicted co-conspirator in an iron-clad criminal case. His impeachment inevitable, he resigned the presidency in the summer of 1974.
Wait, what? I’ll admit I was in grade school during that epoch, but I’ve read about it plenty since then, and I don’t remember a DAMN THING about the FBI basically executing a broad search warrant while an impotent Nixon raged at them.
re: #1 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)
Politico needs to remember that this isn’t 1973. Trump has corrupted so much of the government already that I doubt that such a thing could ever happen again.

Yeah, Miller is part of the parade of nitwits, evil trolls, industrial terrorists, nihilist saboteurs and people who should be exiled to prisons in Novosibirsk that has infested the upper reaches of our government.

I return again to my mental image of how the Trump presidency ends: a private plane taking off a runway, chased by a phalanx of FBI cars, trailing a cloud of dollar bills, swirling in the air, from the broken-open bales of cash that wouldn’t fit into the plane …
… as Don Jr. and Ivanka sob in handcuffs, tears running down their faces, “Daddy! Daddy! Wait! Come back!” …
… and then overhead, a wing of F-16s scrambled from Langley AFB scream on afterburners, chasing Trump as he desperately tries to reach international waters, to claim asylum in Russia …

Equal to Nixon grabbing an FBI agent by the lapels and screaming in his face. Man, I never knew he did that.
Much more likely: Mueller waits until just before the election to file charges. When they drop, Trump goes bonkers. Unable to deny reality any more, his lawyers break the news to him. He snaps and starts raving into an open microphone to Fox & Friends.
The next day, the cabinet invokes the 25th Amendment, and a fistfight breaks out on the House floor, between GOP reps who don’t want to be voted out of office, and members of the “Freedom Caucus” who are lost to reality (and living in safe, batshit-crazy districts).

As dumb as everyone in this administration is, they could probably just ask them for incriminating evidence, saying that it was to publicize some new InfoWars campaign, and they would get a 20% cut, and they’d all roll over like trained seals.

Is anyone else surprised that Melania hasn’t retaliated by flaunting a relationship with some virile toyboy? Allowing herself to be photographed - dark & grainy, via a shaky long lens, so it looks authentic - making out with some dude with sculpted abs and a full head of hair?
Bonus points if it’s Colin Kaepernick.

And when they catch up to Trump’s escape jet and box him in to escort him back, I could see Trump scream to his pilot to try to ram them to get them to back off. If his pilot refuses to, I could see Trump trying to wrest the controls to do it himself, resulting in one of three things:
1) The pilot and/or other passengers subdue Trump and his pilot complies with landing back at the nearest USAF base.
2) Trump causes a mid-air collision that also destroys his plane outright.
3) Trump causes a mid-air collision that doesn’t destroy his plane outright, but still dooms him as the flight leader is told these seven words by their higher-ups (with assent from the Pentagon and Acting President Pence): “You are free to engage the target”. You’d have to wonder what would be going through Trump’s empty skull in those last seconds as the fighters drop back to a safe distance, then light his ass up and scatter him all over the Atlantic.

I was on the set for that one. Mann is a total genius. Also a maniac. He wanted a helicopter flyover of the shootout. Problem: the main electrical trunk lines for LA were over the street.
“So? Take ‘em down.”
Day of the shoot, the location manager had a cellphone (those old big Star-Tacs) on each ear. We were re-routing the power for all of metro LA, by pushing the San Onofre output to 100%. The location manager said, “Go!”
Lines came down. Mann called action. Actors started running around & shooting. Chopper swooped overhead.
Six months later, in the editing suite, Mann looked at the footage and said, “Nah. Takes us out of the emotion of the scene. Let’s stay close on Val Kilmer and DeNiro fleeing instead.”
Cost of the aerial shot: $3 million. Never made it even into the DVD extras, as far as I know…

Wow….I had no idea.
I’d say in the end, Mann made the right choice. That shootout scene is intense and probably one of the best I’ve ever seen. The sound design really amps it up, too. No background music whatsoever; it completely immerses you in the moment.

The car chase in “To Live and Die in LA” was the first one (to my knowledge) that featured the car desperately going the wrong way down the freeway into oncoming traffic.
Years ago, as part of the film series at the Egyptian up on Hollywood Blvd., they had the director, William Friedkin (who also did French Connection and the Exorcist), talking about what it took to do this scene. Amazing. Still holds up (although the cutaways from Petersen as he’s driving to slo-mo scenes are a bit French Nouveau for my taste).

No. Absolutely not. There has got to be consequences. There has to be something that deters future dictator-wannabes, those who want to loot the Treasury, those who break laws. I think Chelsea might just be delusional enough to think she has some sort of super power, and that she fancies herself a “spy” or at least mixed up enough to draw on it as a defense mechanism when it is convenient. In reality, it seems like she is in way over her head.
She is fortunate that Obama pardoned her, I think it was the right thing to do as, no doubt, she suffered greatly in prison. She shouldn’t try to parlay that into a Senate run. I think she needs to take some time out for some counseling.

honestly i was only thinking of the getting him out of office part
this is different from watergate in a lot of ways - some “sacred” stuff - foreign governments meddling, the election mechanism itself (not just the dnc headquarters and ratfucking), possibly complicity by lots of americans (read treason), lots and lots of people involved who individually also committed lots of easy errors (read felonies) in docs signed under penalty of perjury, and on and on
so maybe it does break into two or more parts
one is getting him out of office
the second is what happens to him/them after
and mueller cant make a deal with all the states and ag’s….besides

Either with money (I am amazed at what some parents just give to their kids now. I have a friend with a teen daughter who was shocked that the 100 dollar A WEEK ALLOWANCE she was giving her kid was being used to buy weed. Really? And she still gives the kid money even after a stint in military school, and she bought her a CAR. After she was arrested for shoplifting GAH. )or maybe even stealing them from somewhere.
I’m outside Atlanta, at least once a week there’s something on the news here about people breaking into cars to steal guns, into homes or into gun shops. I just hope this kid gets some help before he kills someone or himself.

Republicans in Congress aren’t going to give a shit about Trump’s obstruction of justice. What might get some traction is if there are juicy underlying details.
For example, Trump’s money laundering and/or Trump not being nearly as wealthy as he claims he is because he is mostly/completely owned by Russian mobsters.

So his aides basically ignored him, or just sucked at it, but the Republican Congress came along and decided they loved this plan. So basically however bad we think Trump’s staff is, Congressional Republicans are worse.
re: #97 klys (maker of Silmarils)
I didn’t get shit. LOL. My parents were old school. As in, “you live here, I am not paying you to do shit that you are supposed to do in the first place”. My Dad used to ask me where I’d like my parade thrown when I’d ask for money for doing chores. But, they did let me slide on doing stuff at home when I got a part time job after school and when I babysat for the neighbor kids.
I’ve said it before, and I am saying it again: firing the Special Counsel is a red line that the President cannot cross.

re: #94 A Mom Anon
The thing is, it’s not hard to get any kind of a weapon if you want one bad enough. I’d guess this was a friend or relative or parents helping in some form.
I just hope this kid gets some help before he kills someone or himself.
i hear you loud and clear
there are two dynamics here - your first line, then all the rest
i have no kids, so no experience in that area, there’s a lot im just not clued in on. and my life is not all that plugged in. there’s a lot i dont know thats going on.
its your first line that chills me. this is the way things are now. and i know you’re not saying it - that its part of the argument that always comes up why “gun control” just cant work.
at some point along the line or each line of a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun, and two lever-action rifles, people lost control of their weapon(s). they sold to someone they shouldnt, or it was stolen and i wonder if reported, or in some other way one kid was able to take control of all four.
now and again i get to fear for humanity and it’s got nothing to do with the moron-in-chief
re: #102 dangerman
Oh I hear you. I don’t think Trump is the disease, he’s the symptoms all rolled into a big orange blob of shit. This country needs an empathy injection of some kind. There are way too many lonely and disaffected people in this country. Sadness and anger and fear create monsters of all kinds and levels.
Oh noes! They’re on to us!

It seems so very sad when a 14 year old thinks guns are the solution to disliking other students.
Bullying. Some day the people in charge of the schools will take that seriously. Expel bullies. Protect children. So many of these shootings are a result of bullying, of desperation (and a desire for retribution).
A real shame. A national tragedy in itself.

When my son was being bullied in middle and high school, the school system was more concerned about the bullies’ (yes plural) privacy than what was being done to my kid. I knew who the bullies were, and when I mentioned their names in school meetings I was shushed. It’s not like the little assholes were being secretive. Some of what was done to him would have landed an adult in a workplace in jail. When I related some of the things done to my kid in those meetings there was actually LAUGHTER from the people supposed to be protecting him.
I wish to fuck I could sue a whole list of people over that shit. Because of that experience my son NEVER wants to set foot in a classroom again. Not even for tech or trade school. He left school thinking he was stupid and spent so much time trying to fend off this shit he learned very little (he had no idea that 32 degrees is the freezing temp of water as just one example) that he should know. But he would not allow me to withdraw him from school, he told me he wasn’t going to let the motherfuckers run him out of there and he said letting them get away with it would just make it harder for the next autistic kid. Sigh. Adults really do not get how bad it can get, it is nothing like the teasing and bullying that was typical 30 or 40 years ago.
Funny exchange I just heard (paraphrased):
“Robert Mueller knows everything. If you’re just finding it out now, he’s known about it for weeks or months.”
“So you’re saying Mueller is God?”
“No, God is capable of mercy.”

That is precisely the shit I had to go through in school. But it was several asshole teachers who encouraged kids to bully me. From the third grade teacher who made fun of my hair calling me N-word head to the algebra teacher who made fun of my clothes to the football coach who was a world class asshole who endlessly ridiculed me until his wife and I won bridge tournaments, school was a torture chamber. The day I graduated from Auschwitz High School, well I felt like Robert Clary walking out of Auschwitz…
MomAnon,
I’m still reeling that a teenager makes 400/month for nothing.
Amazing.
President Donald Trump pressed senior aides last June to devise and carry out a campaign to discredit senior FBI officials after learning that those specific employees were likely to be witnesses against him as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, according to two people directly familiar with the matter.
In testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, recently fired FBI Director James Comey disclosed that he spoke contemporaneously with other senior bureau officials about potentially improper efforts by the president to curtail the FBI’s investigation of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Mueller is investigating whether Trump’s efforts constituted obstruction of justice.

And I remember when Dad would have the bank give him a couple half dollars. We got that every week. And that was when Dad was paid around $800 a month in the 60s…
The more one looks into the sex abuse scandal, the more people need to realize that the athletic programs at places like MSU need to be ended permanently. They systematically and completely ignored sex abuse and harassment claims, and it was pervasive.
Oh, and in the case of MSU, looks like there’s also a Betsy DeVos angle that needs further investigation. For one thing, DeVos is looking to gut Title IX and monitoring/reporting of harassment/abuse requirements are among the things on the chopping block.
MSU football and basketball programs implicated.
The report also details several sexual abuse allegations made against members of the university’s basketball and football teams during the tenure of its most recognizable figures: basketball coach Tom Izzo and football coach Mark Dantonio.
“In one case, a university-hired outside investigator claimed to have not even generated a written report at the conclusion of his work,” ESPN staff writer Paula Lavigne reported. “And attorneys who have represented accusers and the accused agree on this: University officials have not always been transparent, and often put the school’s reputation above the need to give fair treatment to those reporting sexual violence and to the alleged perpetrators.”
At least 16 Spartans football players have been accused of sexual assault or violence against women since Dantonio became head coach in 2007, according to the report. But as recently as June, when Dantonio was talking to reporters about four of his players who were accused of sexual assault, the coach said “this is new ground for us” when asked how Michigan State previously handled such allegations.
End it.

Catching the end of Ari Melber and he is announcing a special he is doing on Sunday night on the Election Meddling with reps from Facebook and Twitter.
9:00 PM Sunday January 28, MSNBC.
He’s been pretty tough on both in his many exposes he has done since his show has been on. This should be pretty good for anyone interested.
So, Fox News “Special Report” did a segment on sexual harassment. Leading off with the Hillary 2008 campaign story, barely mentioning the guys name who actually was accused of inappropriate sexual conduct, or the nature of the allegations…then they moved on to the Steve Wynn story. Each story received approximately the same amount of time. No details on the horrific nature of of the accusations agaisnt Wynn.
Basically they put Hillary and Wynn in the same light. Yeah, they are equally bad, see?//
*spit*
Where is the outrage like in the case of Harvey Weinstein? Wynn is an official of the RNC, ffs.
When allegations against entertainment executive Harvey Weinstein surfaced last fall, RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel and other GOP leaders quickly called on the Democratic National Committee, its House and Senate campaign arms and individual Democratic candidates and lawmakers to refund his thousands of dollars in donations.
Where are they now?

Jumping in here without reading the thread, BUT, I loved this response on a Renato Mariotti tweet about Mueller/Trump stuff:

I find the Times to be brutally disappointing. Ten years or so ago, my neighbor delivered the NYT and would always drop me a free one. Loved pretty much everything about it. A shame how far it has fallen.
Have to say though, I always loved the Los Angeles Times the most. But now days, WAPO is my fave.
Sad that journalism is such utter crap. I hope the next generation does a better job.

On the bright side, the annual fee for the Times’ online crossword club (including the archive and a bonus Sunday-sized puzzle every month) has gone up only three or four bucks over the past 20 years or so. Not that I think they’re a total rag, but I can’t imagine any other reason to give them my money.

It’s also impossible to report intelligently on US politics while studiously ignoring the essential fact of US politics — i.e., that the Republican party has become a shithole full of bigoted, racist willfully stupid cranks who are led by the likes of Fox News and hate radio according to directives set by rich psychopaths such as the Mercers and the Koch brothers.

Good news from NC, which will hopefully pull it back a little bit from the title of ‘failed democracy’ that it currently has earned:

We also saw what happened after John McCain got booed out at a town hall meeting for suggesting that Obama was an honorable person. Nobody in the GOP wanted to alienate the Tea Partiers and the rabid base by challenging or even distancing themselves from their racist, xenophobic, misogynistic or homophobic utterances.
That started an attention-grabbing race to the bottom, and we are still on the way down.
