I’ve been watching the Ethan Van Sciver harassment of @darrylayo over the weekend, and hearing stuff about him for a lot longer. I’d like to write about it for The Atlantic, so I’m putting out a call: if you’ve been harassed by him or his trolls, DMs and email are open.
— Asher Elbein (@asher_elbein) January 28, 2018
Background for you poor souls who aren’t into comic books: Ethan Van Sciver is an DC Comics artist with a Nazi-friendly attitude, a few comics portfolios decorated with artistic swastikas, and a tendency to sic his horde of fanatical GamerGaters on people who displease him, usually by not being Van Sciver fanatics.
It’s been a huge embarrassment that DC is willing to have this asshole working for them, and a prominent article in the Atlantic about his misbehavior would probably get him the heave-ho for good.
EDIT: And Van Sciver is already in replies making (mostly empty) lawsuit threats.

Manchin’s had plenty of chances to flip. He’s not going to. He’s just got a tough crowd to represent. And they won’t take “helping minorities will also help you” for an answer.

I think the Dems will manage to keep Manchin by granting him a powerful chairmanship. Given the way the Constitution has gerrymandered the Senate, we have to fight to keep those who may not share many of our views on our side.

But it’s the Senate that approves judges; we cannot afford to have another Supreme Court appointment, especially if it replaces one of “our” judges. We also need to stop more of the terrible judges that Trump is spreading throughout the system. These will outlive any Republican administration.
I agree with the goal of regaining the House, but the Senate is critical in blocking unacceptable appointments to administrative positions.

Nope. Only John Boehner blocked it.
blog.seattlepi.com
House Speaker John Boehner has blocked a request by West Virginia senators to allow the remains of the last American veteran of World War I to lie in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
Buckles died Sunday in Charles Town West Virginia at the age of 110. He lied about his age to enlist at 16 to fight in the Great War. He was an ambulance driver in France, and later an escort for returning German war prisoners.
The denial was “a big disappointment and a surprising decision by the Speaker,” said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W. Va.
Newly elected Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., added: “I urge Speaker Boehner to reconsider this ill-advised decision. After all, there won’t be another request like this.”
Thirty times, starting with Henry Clay in 1852, the body of a distinguished American has been displayed in the Rotunda. Unknown soldiers from wars have been accorded the honor, along with such luminaries as civil rights hero Rosa Parks and Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
A Boehner spokesman, Michael Steel, told the National Journal: “The Speaker intends to ask Secretary (Robert) Gates to allow Mr. Buckles’ family to use the amphitheater at Arlington cemetery for his memorial service.
“That way, it will be near the tomb of the unknown soldier, who also fell in World War I.”

I’ve been a diabetic now for over 20 years, and nothing about my disease has ever caused me to do something immoral, make a bad judgment call, or break any law, even when my blood sugar level drops. This guy is a liar who blamed his diabetes for his act of voter fraud, and sadly and unfortunately, there are many in the GOP who will believe him. Something else in the article doesn’t make sense to me, either How can something he described as being “customary” [filling out his ex-wife’s ballots during their marriage] suddenly morph into something one easily “forgets” at the exact time he gets caught doing it? I don’t like persons who don’t own up to their wrongdoing when they’re caught red-handed doing something wrong. With people like these, their trouble is always caused by someone else or something else. Just last week, Meehan [R-Pennsylvania] blamed working to repeal Obamacare for harassing his former staffer after it became widely known that he called her his “soulmate.” Yuck. Their lies disgust me, and especially if they’re the type who claim to love the Lawd. I don’t know their god and I don’t know their Jesus.

As I understand it, north Texas has already pretty much used up its portion of the Ogallala Aquifer (along with Oklahoma and Kansas). Changes in rain would be an utter disaster there. On the north end of the Aquifer (Nebraska and South Dakota), strict regulation of water usage (through metering, including irrigation) means our end of the Aquifer is at or above normal levels.
My understanding is the Texas end of the Aquifer will take about three hundred years to recharge.

Idaho officials said they will begin allowing insurers to sell new plans that don’t meet requirements set by the Affordable Care Act, a move that will test the limits of states’ ability to carve out their own health-insurance rules under the Trump administration.
In a bulletin issued Wednesday, the Idaho Department of Insurance said that it would allow insurers in the state to begin offering “state-based plans” to consumers. These products could leave out some of the benefits mandated by the ACA for individual coverage.

Celebrity musicians and actors are most often liberal because they most often came from nothing. They’ve seen firsthand how many thousands of factors had to align for their talent/work to be turned into money… and they all have very clear memories of people they knew at the beginning of their careers who were just as talented (if not more so) and worked just as hard (if not more so) and are still eating ramen and driving a 20-year-old rust bucket.
Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Ice-T, missed a lot of meals when they were growing up.
The few stars who came from wealthy backgrounds… if they talk politics at all, it’s maybe about gay rights or environmental causes, they stay away from economic/labor issues (Carly Simon, Stockard Channing, Lady Gaga).

It was the Grammy’s last night, and of course Fox is busy complaining about Hillary making an appearance.
These special snowflakes can’t handle it.
Clinton’s a private citizen. She can do what she damned well pleases.
Trump’s the fucking president and media fawns over him when he doesn’t soil himself in the basic functions of the job - like going overseas and not entirely embarrassing himself or the nation.
Meanwhile, Faux News continues running incessant agitprop and misinformation to help Trump and the GOP.
Oh look - Fox News doing all it can to obfuscate/obscure indisputable fact that Wynn is a GOPer. He was the ongoing RNC Finance Chair.
He’s the top money guy for the RNC. That’s the Republican National Committee.
Fox News = agitprop and misinformation.— lawhawk (@lawhawk) January 29, 2018
That’s not a mere slipup. It’s actively misinforming their viewers. Wynn isn’t just some Democrat fundraiser.
He’s the RNC finance chair. He’s the main money guy to keep the RNC afloat. He’s coordinating RNC finances. That’s the opposite of being a Democrat, but Faux is too busy trying to confuse and misinform.
Faux is the enemy just as much as Trump and the GOP are - they’re actively undermining the US at every turn.

“Don’t really like this guy, but…”
I’ve been a diabetic now for over 20 years, and nothing about my disease has ever caused me to do something immoral, make a bad judgment call, or break any law, even when my blood sugar level drops.

Power. That’s all that matters. In the 80s, using Commies to bash Democrats was all that really mattered. Now, using Commies to maintain power over Democrats is all that maters.

Because of the boy’s recent behavior, school officials initiated Baker Act proceedings. The state law allows for judges, law enforcement officials, physicians, or mental health professionals to involuntary examine a person if they believe that person is likely to cause serious bodily harm in the future.
Miami-Dade school police said the boy’s father agreed that he needed mental health treatment, but his mother disagreed. She told police there was nothing wrong with him.
The kid being arrested was initiated at the school.

I’d further add that I think music is one of the most political of the arts and has been for a long time.
Thoughts?
I think all the arts are pretty political. A lot has to do with what you look for too. Music probably seems the most political because it is more prevalent in our media. We don’t have a lot of media presenting and discussing graphic arts (photographs, paintings, prints, etc.) and literature. It’s too bad as maybe our society would place more value in all of it.
The music business, like the movie business is rife with nepotism. Go ahead and click on almost any star of today’s name and their parents more likely than not was a producer, or a director, or an actor, or a singer or an entertainment lawyer or investor. That is to say, most of these people never went hungry so they are projects of their own ego.

I love Zack de la Rocha’s profile (lead singer of Rage Against the Machine):
Zacharias Manuel de la Rocha was born in Long Beach, California on January 12, 1970, to a Mexican-American father, the artist Robert “Beto” de la Rocha (born 1937),[3][4] and a mother of German and Irish origin, Olivia Lorryne Carter (born 1941).[3][5][6] His father played an integral part in his cultural upbringing. Beto was a muralist and a member of Los Four, the first Chicano art collective to be exhibited at a museum (LACMA, 1973). De la Rocha’s grandfather, Isaac de la Rocha Beltrán (1910-1985),[7] was a Mexican revolutionary[8] who fought in the Mexican Revolution and worked as an agricultural labourer in the U.S. De la Rocha would later see the hardships his grandfather endured reflected in the struggles of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.[9]
De la Rocha’s parents divorced when he was six years old, and he moved from East Los Angeles to Irvine with his mother, who attended the University of California at Irvine and ultimately earned a Ph.D. in anthropology.[10] De la Rocha later described Irvine as “one of the most racist cities imaginable” and said that “if you were a Mexican in Irvine, you were there because you had a broom or a hammer in your left hand”.[11] De la Rocha became a vegetarian as a teenager.[12]

The pictures I have been putting up were taken by two different cameras, an older model sold by Spypoint, and the new one a Browning product.
I think the Browning branded cameras are made by another outfit, they are nearly identical to some sold by Moultrie. Metadata indicate the camera maker to be Prometheus. A brief Google search yielded little pertinent info on them
There are no manual setting for the camera, everything is automatic, including the switchover from day to night mode. I haven’t tried the video mode, photo mode tends to yield better resolution per frame.

Probably getting his yam defense story straight—Baker is a big yam toadie:
The editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal reportedly berated reporters at the newspaper in a late-night email Wednesday over their coverage of President Donald Trump…
This isn’t the first time Baker has appeared to ask staffers at the paper to hedge their language when reporting on Trump, who has close ties to the Journal’s owner Rupert Murdoch…
Instead of publishing Baker’s full interview with Trump, the Journal published excerpts. Then Politico obtained a leaked transcript of Baker’s full interview with the president, which the Columbia Journalism Review called “embarrassing” for the paper.
The transcript revealed Baker’s inability to press Trump if he got the facts wrong or to keep him on-topic, and it included a short and friendly visit from Ivanka Trump. Baker and the first daughter chatted about seeing each other at an elite media party in Southampton earlier that summer.

Just keep in mind a lot of what you are talking about is mainstream music which is nothing more than product to hit the dictates and fashion of the current market.
The good art is still underground and in the arts community. Sadly.
Speaking of that…LGF turned me on to James McMurtry. The other night after some jamming, my guitar playing buddy and I watched this from James. I don’t know if this concert has been linked already here, but it can’t hurt to put it up again.
It is an amazing show by a true wordsmith that is also a hell of a guitar picker. He and his band can really rock out, do some blues, maybe some traditional Americana…but all good.
I’m just trying to figure how he remembers all the words as the songs seem stream of conscience. I looked to see if he had notes or a computer screen…but I don’t think I saw them
Save this link when you have some time to watch it. Hour and forty minutes of greatness. And the smallish crowd that got to see him had to be pleased. He knocked it out of the park.

Sure, I would love to see WiDems throw some support to her. They haven’t as of yet and it’s kind of throw all your eggs in one basket at this point for dems in Wisconsin. I would love a dem primary and then an actual debate for Ryan. Instead of Ryan just walking into the job again virtually unopposed. Unless Ryan drops out, he’ll use Nehlen to show how opposed he is to Nehlens white nationalist ideology. All the while doing the exact same thing Nehlen would do. Gahhhh!!!!

Here’s a super-famous bit of political art

inbox - NRCC says Rep. Frelinghuysen is retiring. That’s the chairman of House Appropriations, from a political dynasty that goes back to the Revolutionary War
— Rick Klein (@rickklein) January 29, 2018
The most interesting part of the Frelinghuysen story is how few people know about this political dynasty compared to those like the Kennedy family. His ancestor was a delegate in the Continental Congress! https://t.co/FSlwhAkR4l https://t.co/XgLavtFC6f
— Amelia Frappolli (@AmeliaFrappolli) January 29, 2018
Another GOP retirement. This one is significant in a couple of ways. It’s a NJ GOPer.
That’s significant.
That Frelinghuysen is also a direct descendant of a political family which predates the US Constitution is worth noting. One of his ancestors, Frederick Frelinghuysen, was a US General and was at the Constitutional Convention. His family has been in NJ politics as long as the country has been around.
He’s retiring because the tide has turned against him and the GOP.
This is another potential Dem pickup.

Rockwell is actually considered more of an illustrator and called many of his own works “pictures” instead of paintings. I’m not sure, but I am guessing many of his works were not even on stretched canvas but on illustration board.
That is not to take anything away from his works much of them done for books and magazines under contract with the publications.
Due to the nature of his work, much of his stuff could be considered political as well as story telling about America.

If she stays with it, realize that it’s a satellite. I would get a digital antenna set up in case of bad weather. I had it for a while until the price became something I couldn’t bear, but the navigation is great (it’s even got a subset of IMDB built into the guide: You can check out whose in a movie or show and then select a person to see what other things they’ve been in).
The biggest beef I’ve had with Spectrum is that their navigation system is almost exactly the same as it was the last time I had it, about 12 years ago.

As a long time Indians fan I understand the desire to stop using the image.
But as a kid I loved that icon and as a kid I did not see it as something negative. I saw him as The Cleveland Indian. I guess I didn’t know about the negatives of the image back then as I didn’t see and hear all the negative stuff people said about Native Americans.
Call it childhood naivety.
So long Chief Wahoo.
Question now will be, will they need to change the team name from “The Cleveland Indians?”

Don’t know if this is true but here is a very benign reason someone put forth.
So McCabe is using accumulated annual leave to essentially “retire” about 6 week early? No big deal. A lot of agents do exactly the same thing, especially if they have a retirement job offer.

From a fuzzy part of my brain I believe McCabe was getting to the point of being able to retire from the FBI with benefits in a few months. Trump I believe (heard it bantered around somewhere) was going to attempt to screw McCabe over (because it is who Trump is) and fire him with a few days left before McCabe had access to this. Thus this may be a way for McCabe to keep his retirement benefits which he rightly deserves because he saw no other way to keep them if Trump was planning on being a dick.

I go to the story arc on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, where Jane Krakowski’s character plots/plans to get the Redskins to change their name:
At first she tries blackmailing a team owner’s son, but when that doesn’t work out, she concocts an even wilier plan — thanks to some inspiration from protesters…
She finagles her way into the board meeting and convinces the team owners that they’d make even more money if they came up with an even more controversial team name. How about the Jacksonville Hillarys, one owner exclaims, or the Kansas City Islams, another opines.
They settle on the Washington Gun-Takers.

Trump can’t be bothered to be on the same page as his Secretary of State and they’re busy with the mixed messages and completely different responses.
Trump, the great negotiator, is an abject failure, and when he doesn’t get his way automatically defaults to it’s the other guy’s fault. That’s not how any good negotiator works. It’s not even how a bad negotiator works. It’s how a toddler functions.
Meanwhile, McCabe is retiring, and Fox is treating this as though he was ousted as a sign of house cleaning - and not the obstruction of justice that it is actually indicative of.
Hannity’s busy spewing his agitprop for his viewers to remain misinformed. They are all of a single hive mind that Clinton and Obama will be led away in handcuffs when all this is said and done (and they might get their way if we completely abandon the rule of law).
If we maintain the rule of law, we get a completely different outcome - where Trump and his cronies are held accountable, and we may come to learn Hannity is eyeballs deep on the obstruction of justice because he continually provides guidance to Trump in private conversations that coordinate the Trump message.

But that’s impossible, Trump told us that the world laughed at Obama!

The GOP has gone to war on your right to vote.
I assume they filed an amicus brief, because otherwise what kind of standing would they have? I’m not even sure why they’d be all that persuasive as an amicus brief…
I like when they try to revoke birthright citizenship as if that hasn’t positively impacted assimilation.
re: #290 Mike Lamb
It seems to boil down to “wow, this could cause a lot of work for us.”

My guess? They’re hoping one of the wingers on the court will sympathize with them.

Goes back further. In 1750 Ben Franklin was saying the same about the Germans in Pennsylvania.
Oddly enough, at least with respect to the Amish and Old Order Mennonites, he was actually correct.
Floyd Landis assimilated just fine.
Just in: Andrew McCabe stepping down as Deputy FBI Director now, Pete Williams reporting, earlier than his planned departure later this year.
This is the same official that new FBI Director reportedly threatened to resign over when Trump asked for his firing, per @jonathanvswan— Ari Melber (@AriMelber) January 29, 2018
Time was, you’d devote a 25-year career to public service, you’d get a commendation or a framed letter from your boss. Now, your integrity is maligned by the President, your motivations questioned, and your name dragged through the mud. A true disgrace. https://t.co/TZmTDbwdf4

congratulations #GOP once again you have put protecting @realDonaldTrump ahead of protecting the interests of the United States, the intelligence community, the justice department and democracy. November 2018 can’t get here soon enough!

Folks, remember that Deep Throat, the man who exposed Nixon’s coverup in Watergate, was the retired #2 person at the FBI.

Most tone deaf response to music and politics….
And the winner goes to Nikki Haley, who seems to think that politics and music are completely separate (they aren’t and never have been).

The hot take from the wingnuts is that Wray saw the memo and McCabe scurried out because he knows he’s just about to get swept up in indictments against Hillary and Obama.
What a circle jerk
This is the second year in a row that @SenSanders is doing his own #SOTU response. Here’s his response from last year (which has this incredibly Bernie-esque screengrab): https://t.co/A9hH0M26pf pic.twitter.com/1DOocZR2qr

A lot of Democrats will be responding to Trump’s #SOTU including…
- Rep. Joe Kennedy (official)
- VA Del. Elizabeth Guzman (Spanish language; shout out —
she’s Peruvian)
- Rep. Maxine Waters on BET
- And now, Sen. Bernie Sanders: https://t.co/rAteKSrRwe— Marianna Sotomayor (@MariannaNBCNews) January 29, 2018
