It’s just how did we get to the point where Nazism was an acceptable ideology. I can agree to disagree with many people but Nazis? Nope.

If staff were armed, they would become targets, and the body count would increase. Having a gun does nothing if you are taken unawares.

Every year, cops are killed going in to domestic violence situation where they know or have reason to know someone may be armed.

It doesn’t help. Guns aren’t a magic talisman. They don’t imbue a person with invulnerability.

Israelis who have guns are required to pass stringent tests; that’s on top of the compulsory military service that most Israelis end up doing (why not all Israelis is a subject for a completely different and longer post).

The strongest, bravest armed man is no match for an evil wolf with a gun, either. Guns don’t miraculously make you safe. If you survive an encounter with an armed gunman, it is almost completely down to luck, not skill or fortitude or courage. He missed, you (or the police) didn’t, end of story. A gun is more of a near-automatic death sentence than a near-automatic wall of invulnerability.

“…that bill is intended to deal with “oyster harvesting, revising standards of water vending machines, and more.”

“However, conveniently tucked in pages 88-90 of this 98 page bill is language that would require the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to grant a Concealed Weapons Permit applicant their permit within 90 days, even if a full background check has not been completed,” he revealed. “No one should be granted a concealed weapons permit unless a full background check has been completed. That’s just common sense.”

A little over a month after his inauguration, on Feb. 28, 2017, President Trump signed HJ Resolution 40, a bill that made it easier for people with mental illness to obtain guns. CBS News then asked the White House to release the photograph of Mr. Trump signing the bill, making the request a total of 12 times.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders finally responded to repeated emails and phone calls with a one-line note on April 19, 2017, writing to CBS News, “We don’t plan to release the picture at this time.”

A White House photographer confirmed to CBS News that there are photos of the bill signing. Those photos won’t be seen unless the Trump administration releases them, though, because the White House is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

There is a whole RWNJ sub culture devoted to spreading fantastic bullshit about gun control in Australia, crime is out of control (especially rape by non-whites), all guns were confiscated, hunting is illegal etc. etc.
Actually there are still a lot of privately held guns in Australia, crime is in decline, and the government paid for the guns it put on the prohibited list.
The real reason the ammosexuals and NRA hate Australian gun control is simple: It works.

Off-topic, but here’s something to depress all you book-readers.

The Entirely Unnecessary Demise of Barnes & Noble

Basically, B&N is going the Circuit City route and dumping all its full-time employees who know how to run stores, because the execs have already decided to scrape all the profits out, let the business die, and give the CEO a $10 million bonus.

This’ll leave all but the largest cities without any bookstores at all. And once Amazon has an effective nationwide monopoly, they’ll quit offering books at any sort of discount. I have no idea if the publishing industry is ready for that, but I’ll bet on nope. :/

Please join us in praying for this nation, our communities, our children.

There will be lots of heated rhetoric about firearms, about our rights, and the lot. Our position has not changed. This is not a gun control issue. This is a mental health issue, this is a cultural issue. This is not going to be solved by more laws, more restrictions on our rights as citizens.

God Bless.

Damn damn damn

A damn shame. B&N was the only real reason I visited the local shopping mall. Now I have no reason to go there except for Pokemon Go.

They’re still open, for at least a few months or a couple years. So they’re still worth going to.

re: #98 guachi

Barnes and Noble was doomed. It’s just the last one left standing to die. My wife loves Barnes and Noble but even our purchases have dropped there. We buy fewer books and media and spend more and more on Amazon.

It’s hard to resist the pull of Amazon and shop elsewhere. For example, I have to go out of my way to buy movies at Best Buy but I also know Best Buy price matches Amazon.

I live out in the sticks, so it’s a two-hour drive to get to the closest bookstore. So Amazon’s my only option. And as a book fanatic, I’m not sure how I’ll feed the monkey if Amazon starts jacking up book prices. :/

Thai basil is often characterized as having a clove-like taste and smell, along with the vegetal, peppery taste of Genoa basil (which is generally what you get in the store).

(technically Thai food uses three types of basil—holy basil, Thai basil, lemon basil—in different dishes)

This whole wingnut nonsense Wayne LaPierre brought into the NRA of “liberals are coming for YER GUNZ!” is only designed to drive voters to the polls for conservatives through fear.

I own a shotgun. I am all for the idea of requiring titles to purchase and transfer guns. (Gun stolen and you failed to report it? You’re on the hook if it is used in a crime. Fail to report a sale? You’re on the hook for a crime. Works for cars and boats, should work for guns.)

As for the argument “cars aren’t a protected right,” they used to be. There was an absolute right to drive an unregistered car without a license. Courts repeatedly found that the government had no constitutional right to regulate automobiles.

As road carnage increased, gradually courts imposed restrictions on automobiles to the point where it is now one of the most restricted activities you can do besides fly an aeroplane (and the same applied to those as well).

The Entirely Unnecessary Demise of Barnes & Noble

Basically, B&N is going the Circuit City route and dumping all its full-time employees who know how to run stores, because the execs have already decided to scrape all the profits out, let the business die, and give the CEO a $10 million bonus.

Crap. I didn’t know that. I’ve got a membership at B&N. It was pretty often possible to get much better prices at B&N than at Amazon, so I’ll miss the competition (and also miss their exclusive versions of vinyl albums).

We’re lucky that there are still lots of independent bookstores in the Twin Cities. The newest and closest to me is a store owned by Garrison Keillor and Macalaster College. I haven’t been in it yet because I really can’t stand Keillor.

Even after B&N goes down, I plan to use Amazon a lot less in the future. They’re getting far too omnipresent. I don’t feel like being a part of it anymore.

Would that the Port Huron Statement had won out instead. It was hardly perfect but it would still be a better world.

I’m showing my age having been a member of the YPSL back in the 60s and 70s before the old Socialist Party spit into Social Democrats, USA and DSOC. Social Democrats USA was the incubator of what would become neoconservatives and then totally embrace Reagan and the Republican Party. DSOC under Harrington eventually merged with NAM (New American Movement) to become DSA.

Very aware of the history you speak of. I’m a Harrington follower, pure and simple. It’s not perfect by any means but a half step forward after the dance of one step forward and one step back is still better than no progress what so ever.

Oh. %^&*.

William, I sure do remember the Harrington/Rustin split in the Socialist Party. I stayed in Social Dems and DSOC for several years. It got very acrimonious, lots of friction on both sides. I had to abandon Social Democrats when Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Gershman, Kemble and Puddington (SDUSA leaders) all went in with Reagan. The last nail in the coffin was Kemble writing in the New Republic supporting the Contras when we knew what was going on in South Central. I got in an argument with Jim Wood here in Los Angeles that siding with the Contras was the death warrant. Wood got to the point where we could no longer talk without him erupting. Anyway SDUSA collapsed and totally went into the GOP. Now there are a couple people trying to resurrect it and it’s interesting to see that it’s now centered in Pittsburgh by a couple folks that I had clashes with in the 70s…

Anyone who believes this is saying it’s not about stopping people from being killed but about making sure the right people are being killed.

Not a single thought about trying to defuse a violent situation, just worrying about which bodies are on the ground at the end.

I never could really get into the hyperpolitical types, not in Madison, not in San Francisco, not in New York. I met both Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin some time after the revolution was supposed to be won and disliked them both. They seemed to me to be on lunar ego trips. I still remember an antiwar rally in San Francisco where Tom Hayden was the featured speaker. My lady friend and I could see him on the stand before we could hear him. Short answer: More gun sales.

Today was yet another school shooting where the presence of an armed guard made no difference. Sadly, we’re eventually going to see one where an armed teacher was shot dead. At that point, they’ll start advocating arming students.

Rampant speculation on Shulkin — based on no real information, except for the fact that he was a holdover from the Obama administration.

My theory: Under Obama, Shulkin followed the rules and under a Clinton WH, his behavior would have been exemplary. Now, however, he had a position under the Trump administration and the rules were different: the practice under Mnuchin, Pruitt, et al was to get away with anything and everything, use government money to pay for vacations with your spouse. Everyone is doing it — so why adhere to the old standards? Corruption contaminates everyone in the administration.
