It’s Infrastructure week!
Cohen office, hotel, residence search and seizures.
Cohen would rather be drinking a Dark and Stormy than dealing with subpoenas and search warrants from the DOJ about all references to Stormy Daniels.
Bossert is out at DHS.
Trump’s infrastructure guy DJ Gribben is out.
NSA turnover is at a fever peak as Bolton dumps everyone Trump previously gave thumbs up to.
Pompeo turns out to have lied/omitted about connections to a Chinese company. That should kill his nomination and in a normal world end him at CIA too.
National security is in shambles as Trump beats war drums and is pushing for a trade war with China.
Yeah, this is infrastructure week alright.

They are. They’re basically the television extension of the work Rush Limbaugh started. They’re the televangelists of the political world.
I was pretty young during the Kennedy/Johnson administrations and don’t really remember much from that time.
But I do remember Nixon.
And I remember the televised Watergate trials.
Partisanism always exists in these things, and what was different then was that the Democrats ran Congress.
Not true today.
It’s not quite sunk into my psyche yet, about how far over the edge some of the Republican leadership have gone for Trump, to not hold him accountable on numerous issues.
This in-the-tank-at-all-costs mentality can’t be good in the long run. Partisanship has to take a back seat, for the good of everybody.
I suspect what we are seeing is the manifestation of what we all knew was true - that the showmanship of being a “Republican” has long relied on putting a thin patina of false-rationality over the deep angst of many Americans, who are having this or that crisis based in the loss-of-God problem, or loss-of-identity problem.
We need national voices that will publicly discuss these problems in our society.

That sub-culture is a cesspool of perversion, hypocrisy and abuse. RWNJs can see this as easily as we can. Rather than clean it up, their solution is to deflect blame by accusing the innocent. 2014:
“…The testing is meant to assure taxpayers their money isn’t being “wasted” on the less desirable, those who would somehow manage to buy drugs with the assistance. But in Tennessee, where drug testing was enacted for welfare recipients last month, only one person in the 800 who applied for help tested positive. In Florida, during the four months the state tested for drug use, only 2.6% of applicants tested positive. Meanwhile, Florida has an illegal drug use rate of 8%, meaning far fewer people on services are using drugs than their better-off counterparts. The drug testing cost taxpayers more money than it saved, and was ruled unconstitutional last year.”

“History”, as so many people think of the idea today, is sort of a recent phenomenon.
By which I mean, modern historiography is very much concerned with discerning biases from facts, and breaking out of preconceived notions of this or that bit of the past.
But, if you pick up any old (pre 20th century) book which is about “history”, chances are you’re going to be reading a lot of hagiography, or religious dogman, etc.
Even today in some cultures the idea of “history” is just about reifying beliefs.
Think of books by religious fundamentalists, for example. The goal is often to cast the past in a way that will support the current dogma.
It is unclear to me what the world will be like in say 200 years. What we take for granted about “history” may all vanish.

One of the offshoots of spending time on genealogy is that I need to read up on this or that event of the past, the people, the locations, etc.
And I’m beginning to think that quite a bit of what was popularly believed when I was a child, some decades back, was highly skewed.
And while academics have been hard at work writing histories that break out of old molds, our popular culture doesn’t venture far from the previous generations’.
Change in beliefs is incremental.
Change in our beliefs about the past is likewise incremental.

Bear? He was a super-serious hardass that wasn’t fond of other dogs, and weary of strangers. But he was even better behaved (ie calmer) than Chewie. Bear could have never been left off leash outside if even for a second or he would have been gone. Even in my yard with a 6’ fence. Well, a big part of my ancestry is Norwegian (you know, from where Trump claims the good immigrants come), and their last “slaves” were the Irish, I think, that they took to Iceland.
That was a long time ago.
But I have some early colonial ancestors too. I know of only one for sure that owned slaves, as mentioned in the estate records.

He and Chewie, both Malamutes… Total and complete opposites personality wise. Chewie was a complete goofball and loved everyone universally. Even other dogs. He was well-behaved but had many moments of mischief.
Bear? He was a super-serious hardass that wasn’t fond of other dogs, and weary of strangers. But he was even better behaved (ie calmer) than Chewie. Bear could have never been left off leash outside if even for a second or he would have been gone. Even in my yard with a 6’ fence. You could tell he was a stray, while Chewie never had to fend for himself in his life (he was an owner turn-in due to a divorce apparently). lol

Most of your DNA only comes from a tiny fraction of your on-paper ancestors, so any given ancestor far back doesn’t do much, molecularly, for you.
As for me, my beard when I was young, if I let it grow out (which was hardly never because it is so scraggly), had a warmer tint than the hair on my head. Not enough to qualify as “red beard”, though.

Hannity’s viewership numbers are going down, but only slowly.
I suspect his audience is just dying off (literally), and that explains the decrease in viewers.
The big hit Fox News took was when Bill O was dropped like a hot potato. His replacement just has not lived up to Bill’s numbers.

Tucker ain’t got it. Hannity is the biggest thing FoxNews has left.FoxNews’ audience is old folks and old folks don’t like change and FoxNews has had a lot of change. Even if Tucker lasts 10 years they’ll still think of him as the new guy.

Bill O used to draw bigger numbers than Hannity.
Now, Hannity is drawing better than Carlson.
The big move on cable news shows has been the ascent of Maddow, often doing better numbers than any Fox News show.

A friend and his wife had two Malamutes. One female and one male. Hers and his. Great dogs. Both were very gentle. But they could get to talking to each other and get a little loud in a small room watching a football game. The male was a huge 120 pound fluff ball and all puppy all the time. Regarding the viewership numbers, I have convinced myself that many of Fox News viewers never change the channel, which is why their evening shows are stuck in the 2-3 million viewer range with little variation.
Put differently - few people stop and watch Hannity while channel surfing. His numbers like all programs’ vary from night to night and week to week, but not dramatically, not like say when one of the OTA networks put on a rerun (which typically only do a fraction of the first run of an episode.)

They have completely opposite personalities. Buster is hyper-active and always busy while Sadie is always very calm, sometimes forgetful and easily distracted. She even forgets why she goes out of the house in the AM. Buster always wants to play and if you’re just sitting there you will soon find his ball in your hand. The other story I liked hearing about him and you have to remember was Pre-Vatican II when there was still some open bad blood between Protestants and Catholics but my other great grandmother, his sister’s mother in law, a devout Catholic worried about attending a wedding at a Protestant church, he gave her his blessing. I mean that’s not a big deal to us 65 years later but at that time? It’s things like that have me refusing to accept conservatives going “Well that’s the way things are and ought to be because it’s always been that way.” My Dad’s parents being of different social classes also influences that and hell tbh my own parents.

Speaking of history, HBO has the Andre The Giant documentary that it has premiered, but what strikes me is how for most of us the mental image of Andre is shaped by his later years, in the 1980’s up through The Princess Bride.
What we think of as “Andre” is someone who is very heavy, and lumbering.
But he was not always that way. Found on Youtube, a match from 1968:
You can see that Andre’s skeleton is still overly large for the amount of muscle on the upper body, a problem of his condition, but he’s not exactly “fat”. Also, he’s pretty nimble at that time.
Draw a lesson from this: when we think of the past, of “history”, our thoughts are shaped by that to which we have been exposed.

“Speaker Ryan is an embodiment of a particular kind of optimistic, pro-growth, pro-free market inclusive conservatism,” said Michael Steel, a former top adviser to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio)…
Well, he’s the embodiment of something, that’s for sure.

Bank of America has announced they will no longer lend money to companies that produce military style weapons for civilian use:
“We have let them know that we are going to, it’s not our intent to underwrite or finance military-style firearms in a go-forward basis,” Anne Finucane, vice chair for Bank of America, told Bloomberg.
The decision was in direct response to a number of high-profile mass shootings across the country, most recently at a Parkland, Florida, high school that left 17 people dead in February.
“We want to contribute in any way we can to reduce these mass shootings,” Finucane said.

Anti-gay pastor who claimed Orlando massacre victims got “what they deserve” is found guilty of eight counts of child molestation.

On Monday a jury found Pastor Adkins guilty on all charges. Adkins, 57, now faces life in prison. He will be sentenced on April 25.

Apologetics Fail #21: Militant Atheists (goes off-site to Cynics for a Better Tomorrow)
Frequently, when atheists speak out against such things as religious intrusion on the affairs of statecraft, or even on defending their own rights, they are defined as “militant.” This characterisation is not solely applied by religious people; ofttimes the popular press will apply the term “militant atheist” to people such as Sam Harris or Daniel Dennett.
The term “militant” is used, especially by apologists, as both a strawman (atheists are angry) and in an equivocation fallacy (the image brought forth is of a group of armed fighters trying to overthrow the established order).

Thanks for saying this. One of my former students is gay and has adopted a little boy. Whenever I see them together, the kid is happy. He knows he’s loved, and that’s all that should be important. Your comment reminded me of the couple in Texas that adopted a little girl from India. The first story the dad gave was that he put her outside in the alley beside the house because she wouldn’t drink her milk. It turned out that he’d killed her all along. Around the same time when this baby died, the parents and another child had gone out to dinner and left that child at home all alone. Afterward, pediatrician told law enforcement that she’d seen signs of abuse on the child and she’d reported it. I’m not quite sure whether child welfare authorities investigated as thoroughly as they should have, but somehow and for some reason, the baby remained with her adoptive family and ended up dead. Her body was found not too far from the home a little less than two weeks after she disappeared. I still think about that little girl and wonder how anyone could abuse any child. It could have been that if she’d been adopted by a same—sex couple, she’d be alive and thriving, but we have some nuts in America that seem to think certain Americans shouldn’t be permitted to adopt. That needs to change. It must change.

…
It’s been a long time since I’ve read her so my memory may be somewhat flawed.
The term militant does not necessarily imply violence but being combative and aggressive in support of a cause. And that she was. She had total and vocal contempt toward those who were religious
Ayn Rand may not have advocated for violence in the name of atheism but she definitely rejoiced in violence in her magnum opus Atlas Shrugged in support of her economic philosophy. She did not care how many perished if they did not follow her ideology. What turned me off her permanently was the train crash early in the novel — when she justified the deaths by saying the passengers all deserved their fate because they preached compassion or charity or some other virtue that she characterized as a vice. IRL she was a fan of a serial killer William Hickman; she admired his sociopathy; as praise she wrote “Other people do not exist for him, and he does not see why they should”.
Of course, somehow Paul Ryan has managed to combine his Catholic faith with an economic philosophy that was antithetical to everything that Catholicism stands for
re: #338 Hecuba’s daughter
There is her rather -uh- graphic descriptions of violence in her fiction. That violence is supported with her philosophy (objectivism) [Ha, my spell check doesn’t recognise her philosophy as a word], not her atheism.
She was quite outspoken on the subject (as was Christopher Hitchens, and is Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, David Silverman, &c). She considered religious views as a rejection of reason, but did not seek to kill anyone over religious views or ban them.

The Atheist Libertarian Lie: Ayn Rand, Income Inequality, and the Free Market (Salon, 2014)
They assert that the libertarian position on free markets as existing in some sort of privileged position that cannot be questioned is sort of the rigid dogma that atheists try to avoid (thus strawmanning atheists somewhat, since atheism means absolutely nothing other than the disbelief in the assertion of a god or gods).

Every libertarian “free market” social experiment has failed miserably. Rand’s may have worked out OK for her fictional protagonists, but notably she ignored the ramifications for everyone else. Randian objectivism is another form of feudal determinism: there should be people at the top telling the people under them what to do, and btw serfs, the rent is due.

1) Ayn Rand worshiper?
2) Libertine laws on smoking weed?
3) Fantasy land of no taxes?
It’s one of those words people use as identifiers, a tribal mark, but without a tribe.
In my opinion Rand is just the opposite coin of Marxism. If Communists can be accused of being too optimistic in their belief of human nature, I can just as easily level that against Objectivists. At least the welfare state has shown some success. Objectivism? Not so much. Rand’s philosophy makes heroes out of jerks and makes villains out of those aware that “It’s about all of us.” Obviously individual rights are important in a society but societies old and young rely on community.

I’ll call it a night with this final thought but I think part of the reason why certain ideologies like conservatism and libertarianism appeal because of not understanding history or perhaps better said how the present was earned. Easy to look down on collective bargaining when you have benefits.

I’m not sure why China has suddenly gone after online Bible sales, but the government is trying hard to quell religious belief/Western influences here. State-sanctioned churches are OK, but woe be unto you if you belong to a religious group that is not sanctioned.

Well, when I use it, I always capitalise the word when I am referring to the Libertarian Party or one of its members.
I use it lower-cased (or write it as “small-l libertarian”) when referring to a person who claims the title but does not hold to the Libertarian Party’s ideas.
“Libertine” was coined by John Calvin to name those he deemed were sexually immoral. Later the term expanded in definition to mean debauchery. (I suppose you could consider using maryjane a libertine activity if you define that use as debauchery.)

I find it amusing to talk policy with libertarians because I always end up sounding the most practical. I think in some fields libertarians have the right idea but they’re too focused on an absolutist position economics especially to see the big picture.
There are things I can admire with regard to libertarianism as a philosophy; however, it’s pretty obvious that like Marxism, it has too optimistic a view of human nature. It’s fairly obvious to me that as a governing philosophy, libertarianism would fail - it would lead to chaos.
We have a left-libertarian party here in the Czech Republic, the Pirate Party, and they just got elected into the Chamber of Deputies; they are learning to compromise, which I see as a promising sign. They have some solid ideas and as long as they can manage to temper their idealism with pragmatism, I think they’ll be a force to reckon with in the future here. They’re certainly a damn sight better than some of the other parties here, which range from outright Stalinist to quasi-fascist to oligarchial.

Red flag warning to my west in Wyoming going south and east, all the way to the border with Mexico.

The National Enquirer, a Trump Rumor, and Another Secret Payment to Buy Silence: How the media organization protected the Presidential candidate early in his campaign. (Goes to The New Yorker, the lede, more at the link):
Late in 2015, a former Trump Tower doorman named Dino Sajudin met with a reporter from American Media, Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer, at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. A few weeks earlier, Sajudin had signed a contract with A.M.I., agreeing to become a source and to accept thirty thousand dollars for exclusive rights to information he had been told: that Donald Trump, who had launched his Presidential campaign five months earlier, may have fathered a child with a former employee in the late nineteen-eighties. Sajudin declined to comment for this story. However, six current and former A.M.I. employees, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared legal retaliation by the company, said that Sajudin had told A.M.I. the names of the alleged mistress and child. Reporters at A.M.I. had spent weeks investigating the allegations, and Sajudin had passed a lie-detector test, during which he testified that high-level Trump employees, including Trump’s head of security, Matthew Calamari, had told him the story.

Good thing my wife and I went to the store today (it was windy enough it was difficult to keep Maxwell on the road).

It’s not so bleak in the Bay Area, raining tonight and we are almost at 16” of rain and it’s still in our forecast, local reservoirs are filled and there’s some snow-pack. It’s 45F here so that makes snow level around 4800’. Depending on water release requirements for Sacramento Delta ecology, we should do OK. Southern California also depends heavily on water release on the Colorado River and it’s not doing well this year either.

This one contained a plastic membership card with a serial number, and a pitch to join with their regular fees.
That makes me wonder about their membership numbers. People have speculated for a long time whether the NRA inflates their membership numbers or no, particularly since the NRA doesn’t share that information with the public.
Scratching my head on this speculation, I wonder if these membership pitches with serial numbered cards are included in their membership numbers.
(I also wonder why they’re sending me membership applications; I’ve never gotten those before from the NRA until the last month.)

The problem with getting fired is you might be able to make a case, but you have to survive not starving until you win a case. Moreover, in a right-to-starve state, or if an employer comes up with some other trumped up reason, they’ll get rid of him. (This is a common problem with religious minorities in the USA.)

Yup. It’s against the law to block handicap parking spaces with anything. Another answer might be “wouldn’t it be a shame if that second customer went somewhere else?”
Even in my tiny village we enforce our two handicap spaces rigidly. (They are both in front of the village hall.) It is one of the few reasons we will call the sheriff to enforce a village traffic ordinance if we can’t find the person to move their car (because we have to pay for those).
We have a handicap placard (for my wife). That said, we don’t often use it, because usually my wife gets along fine, so we save it for when she needs it.

Handicap parking is covered under the ADA for private businesses, and is a violation of Federal law if the minimum number of spaces are not available.
That said, police are not required to enforce Federal laws. A person can sue, but you’re left with the problem of “is it worth it, or do I just take my business elsewhere?” (If enough people do the latter, then you wind up with one of two situations: The owner notices the drop in business, or the other businesses start doing the same and you have Jim Crow for handicap parking.)

Arizona House Passes Bill Requiring Women to State Why They Are Seeking an Abortion (Huffington Post)
Party of small government. Y’know, if we renamed “uterus” to “gun,” I’ll bet we could get the NRA to pay politicians millions of dollars to oppose such regulations.
I am really tired of religious belief touted as public policy. (I’d wager no church organisation at all, any of them, came out against this bill either.)
The lede:
The Arizona state House of Representatives passed a bill that would require women seeking abortions to fill out an invasive questionnaire that asks the reason for the procedure.
The legislation, passed on Monday, would force women to answer questions, including whether the abortion is elective for economic reasons, if the pregnancy was from a rape or incest, if the woman does not want children at this time, if the abortion is due to fetal or maternal health, and if the patient is having “relationship issues” such as domestic abuse or an extramarital affair.
The bill passed along party lines, 35-22, the Arizona Star reported. A version already has been approved by the state Senate, which now must decide whether to accept House amendments.
State Rep. Eddie Farnsworth (R) said the bill was about “getting information,” according to the Arizona Star. But when Rep. Daniel Hernandez (D) suggested the questionnaire add questions asking women whether they lacked access to affordable health care and had access to comprehensive sex education, Farnsworth shut the idea down.
“Sex education is not a health-care issue,” Farnsworth said. “Having access to contraception is not a health-care issue.” [my emphasis]

The lede:
Until the 80’s, Germany used to have an “indication law” that required women to obtain permission to get an abortion: she would have to demonstrate that she was mentally or physically unfit, or that there was some economic or social reason that she could not be expected to bear a child.
The main point was that she was not expected to make the decision on her own and had to ask a (usually male) “expert”.
And it also just meant that you went to the Netherlands if you did not get a green light.
That was eliminated. Women are required to obtain counseling but are free to decide on their own.
This led to the Catholic Church to close its counseling centers because they refused to issue a conseling certificate in the event that the mother decided to get an abortion.

Arizona is a particularly gerrymandered state.
Moreover, these types of laws bigots conservatives try to pass have two aims:
a) Deplete the resources of civil libertarian groups which fight against the laws. State governments have unlimited (essentially) tax money to fight each and every case as far as they can.
b) The goal is to overturn Roe v Wade. With thousands of courts across the land, all it takes is one of these laws to slip through.
This bill in a different form already passed the Ariz. senate. They will need to reconcile the bills somehow (or one house accepts the other’s) to get it in front of the state governor.

Mueller’s probably got enough for the obstruction of justice charges, financial crimes, etc., that would be airtight against Trump, Kushner, Junior, etc., as well as conspiracy to the aforementioned criminal charges.
But he also has given other offices (SDNY) the ability to go after other individual criminal acts by Trumpworld, as with Cohen’s financial crimes/campaign finance violations, which in turn will likely result in other criminal acts uncovered.
Everyone around Trump is dirty. They’ve just been accustomed to not having anyone scrutinize their actions for years on end, but now every last thing is under the microscope.
And the investigations don’t end with the feds, or Mueller. NYS is still looking at Trumpworld too.

NWS Boise (Southwestern Idaho and Eastern Oregon)…STRONG WINDS EAST OF BOISE TODAY… .A cold front will be followed by strong winds through this evening. …HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM MDT THIS EVENING…
* WINDS…West to northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts 50 to 60 mph, strongest south and east of Boise.
* TIMING…Wind will increase this morning, with the strongest winds from late morning through late afternoon.
* IMPACTS…Winds of this magnitude can cause property damage and hazardous travel conditions, especially for high profile vehicles. Driving will be most difficult on north-south roads and over bridges.
A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
We have high wind warnings here in Ohio too. Gusts up to 50. We have a warm front moving into the Ohio Valley, could get to 70° today.
I guess it blows all over.

According to the report, a ranking GOP House member said Ryan will step down and “be gone by the end of July.”
The report, which lists House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) or House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) as Ryan’s potential replacement, said Republicans in the House fear an all-out internal war could hurt them as they face the 2018 midterms where they are already looking at an uphill battle to maintain their majority.
According to the report, a battle may already be brewing between the mainstream Republicans and the hard-right Freedom Caucus which has been a thorn in Ryan’s side.

FYI, at the end of last year, the major French newspaper LE FIGARO (center-right) commissioned a survey on the French’s opinion of Trump.
article from Le Figaro in French
90% of French people disapproved of Trump vs 78% of Putin, 56% of Macron (last November he hit a slump) and 32% of Merkel.
54% of French people thought Trump reminded then of Marine Le Pen, and thought he was aggressive (87%), racist (81%), dangerous (81%), versus competent (14%).
Extending the sample to a basket of Europeans (French, English, German, Italians, Spanish) barely ticked: 86% disapproval for Trump, 75% for Putin, 45% Macron, 43% Merkel.

I think it helps to remind the class that 5 years ago, when the White House talked about carrying out airstrikes on Syrian military targets in response to gas attacks as a means of ensuring that the Syrian military could not conduct future attacks…the GOP not only demanded that Obama come to Congress personally to make the case for an AMF (rejecting the long-running argument that it would fall under the ‘01 anti-AQ AMF), but openly threatened to impeach him if he took military action without Congressional approval.
Fast-forward 5 years and Trump rattles the saber as loudly as he can while Republicans…mumble that he needs to seek Congressional approval. No teeth, no threats, just “Pretty please, would you not sink our reelection chances by starting WWIII?”

Totally correct if you include the word Dream — it is a Dream of a Midsummer Night — so the ‘s should be after night.
But in my case, I didn’t; our lovely Puck is a child of a night of Midsummer, so an ‘s after Midsummer is correct.

Like the Turkeys said in the video, the thinking appears to be the guy realizes he is most likely going to get dumped in November, but if he holds off on impeachment until after the primaries (May, June?) he won’t get primaried out and can run in November.
Then if the Republicans band together with the Dems and dump trump before November they just might be able to stand a chance with some Republican voters that think impeaching Trump is important.
I think that is optimistic thinking on any GOPer’s part, but a summer impeachment could be very interesting overall.
I guess we are going to find out if that is their real backroom thinking or just BS.

The GOP could present themselves as “the saviors of the Republic” if they went with a summer impeachment.

If they are evil as you say, they very well could try this.
They don’t care about Trump. They care about their money making machine and saving their butts and access to it.
If they don’t go dramatic they go away. How does that benefit them?
I hate Republicans with the heat of a thousand suns, but I would never consider them to not be as devious as to throw Trump over the side rail of the S.S. GOP.
He was never one of them anyway.
Like anymouse always says…they will do anything to stay elected and keep the power.
This could be one of their better methods to do it. It comes down to do they have the guts to do it and take the lumps that will come with it?
To me this is fascinating politics at play. I’m never going to make any firm comment on their tactics. They are Republicans. We can’t trust them, Trump surly can’t trust them and I bet they don’t trust each other.
re: #465 GlutenFreeJesus
Soooo. Russia and Syria have had 2 (?) days to move their assets out of harm’s way…
Or more if they need it. Just let Trump know and he’ll accommodate you.
What I expect is for the GOP to run two campaigns: National and local.
The national campaign, as I joked about above, is centered around “THEY’RE GONNA IMPEACH HIM!,” hoping to drive up turnout not simply among wingnuts, but among voters who don’t want to go through an impeachment. Look forward to pundits making a lot of noise this summer and fall about how Dem talk about impeachment would “hurt” the country and (totally unironically) a lot of referencing to public opposition to Monicagate, the unspoken argument being that people who hated Bill being impeached should be equally opposed to seeing Donny go through the same.
The local campaigns, by contrast, are gonna be tailored towards the fears of the local crowds. That’s going to mean more promises to ban abortion, more promises to overturn/override regulations keeping some local project from going through, the same bogus promises of “jobs,” and the truly insane ones trying a play at convincing the rubes that running massive deficits is actually “good” for the country…again.

The issue I see is that by doing what is right (impeachment), it is going to be a rallying call to all those on the hard right who, at the moment, are not happy with life and content to not vote. That rallying call is what I fear.
Of course, I also fear nuclear war…and the fact that what world remains will remember US as it once did Germany - for the atrocities committed in our name, with the same good Germans Americans helping out.

re: #558 Targetpractice
That is not truly a local campaign — that is running a campaign on national issues, except for the item bolded above. A local campaign deals with specific community issues: funding for a new roads or developments in the district, additional support for local schools, building a VA hospital in the district, getting help in dealing with local crime, etc.
Gingrich won in 1994 by nationalizing elections; since then, almost all elections for federal office have been based on national issues or finding a serious political or sex scandal that undermines your opponent. Cable news is national, not local.
We have to win on that level — the national level. We need more than impeachment — we need to pin spiraling deficits on the GOP — attempts to undermine Medicare and Social Security on the GOP — resurrecting death panels but this time the blame should be on the GOP depriving people of health care. And this can be done by quoting their own words.

The big difference between then and now is Mueller. In ‘06, the GOP could convincingly argue that any impeachment proceedings against Dubya would be political and “Doesn’t want another Monicagate!”
This time? While public opinion is still generally set against impeachment, a majority support Mueller’s investigation and feel it should be allowed to conclude and its findings made available to the public. Any move to prevent such can tip the country into wanting impeachment, which would turn the wave into a tsunami.

1. The members of the TPP will happily welcome the US into the fold because they “need” us

3. If any member(s) balk at our demands, we can just walk away again and they’ll be left off worse than if they’d just bowed to us.
The idea that the TPP members are gonna view us like a perspective pledge at a frathouse just does not cross his mind at all.
re: #582 Ace-o-aces
If your takeaway from Holocaust Remembrance Day is, “we need to be less open to refugees”, than your history teacher did a really bad job
I am gonna try to approach this question very carefully:
Germany took on around a million refugees over recent years.
Which I believe was a good and admirable thing to do.
But of course, it was not without its problems and did start to lead to a degree of backlash against immigrants and foreigners not seen in Germany for a long time.
And the rise of the AfD, a seriously right-wing, anti-immigrant party, which entered parliament with around 13% of the vote.
If Germany did anything wrong, it was to take refugees in unlimited numbers or rather as an unlimited share of the overall total who entered the EU, which would have still been considerable, as Germany is the largest nation by population with the largest GDP.
It has led to complaints like “Why are we taking on more refugees when we don’t have enough money for our own poor and homeless?”
A response from a leftist politician here, Gregor Gysi, summed it up:
“Even without the refugees, we would not still find enough money for our own poor”.

I posted this link last night, but this needs to get more attention than it’s been getting. It points up a crucial aspect of the timing of the Wikileaks Clinton email dump, and might answer why the FBI was looking for information about the Access Hollywood video.
there is another aspect of the Post being the outlet which got the big scoop that has always struck me as potentially very significant. The Post’s reporter, David Fahrenthold, has said that he was only made aware of the tape, via an unnamed source, THAT day — which is a clear indication that whomever was trying to get the Post to release it had decided to do so in tremendous haste. After all, if the source had planned it sooner they would have made contact with Fahrenthold well before then because he might have been out of pocket that day.
Why is this timing important? Well, two other significant events happened that day in almost exactly the same time period. That morning, U.S. intelligence released a statement formally accusing Russia of breaking the law in an effort to influence our election. That afternoon, WikiLeaks began releasing emails which were hacked from Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Now it is certainly possible that this timing was all coincidental. After all, it was just two days before a huge presidential debate and just one month before the election was over. However, especially now in light of the Cohen raid, there is now plenty of reason to reevaluate what was really going on here.
To be precise - the Wikileaks dump started 31 minutes after the Access Hollywood video dropped. Ziegler speculates that the Trump campaign may have leaked the video, but to me it looks more like the email dump was a defensive move against the video.
Imagine if they find evidence that Cohen coordinated with Wilileaks to order the mail dump. Game over at that point. All the dots would be connected.

Yes because he was putting away scum before I was born and I’m older than Wohl I believe.
I was just listening to Preet’s latest podcast. He makes a pretty good case for why it would be incredibly difficult to get rid of Mueller (but then notes unhelpfully something like ‘but who knows, these are crazy times’). He also thinks that since the Cohen case is being handled by SDNY it is essentially decoupled from Mueller and will continue there regardless of anything Trump does to muddle the SC’s case.

Oh then yeah. He was born after Mueller was part of the Commission prosecutions in the 80’s and early 90’s. re: #606 Archangelus
I even checked the quote to make sure it was not being stretched out of context, but nope:
“It ain’t the rule of law when they kick in your door at 3 in the morning and you’re faced with armed men. And you have had no reason to be told you’re going to have that kind of treatment,” he continued.
“That’s Stalin. That’s the Gestapo in Germany. That shouldn’t be the American FBI.”
It is rule of law when they are executing a legally issued warrant, and coming at 3am is also standard practice to ensure that you do not have a chance to hide or destroy any evidence.

A long, good read - What, exactly, was Michael Cohen doing for Donald Trump?
Cohen is often described as Trump’s “personal lawyer,” but that doesn’t really seem to illuminate his work. It’s helpful to start at the beginning. The Associated Press retold the origin story of the Trump-Cohen relationship, also told elsewhere, on Tuesday: Cohen was a resident at a Trump building and a member of the condo board in the early 2000s when he intervened in a dispute and impressed Trump. “So Trump said, ‘Who is this guy? My lawyers that I give thousands of dollars to couldn’t do it. I’d like to meet him,’” Cohen’s uncle told the AP.
That incident is telling: Cohen wasn’t acting as a lawyer, so much as a mediator and troubleshooter. And at many stages in his association with Trump since then, he also has been doing work that doesn’t really seem primarily legal in nature.
Trump himself was—is—famously litigious. On real-estate matters, however, Trump Organization attorney Alan Garten tended to speak for the company. Marc Kasowitz, who briefly represented Trump in the Russia matter last year, often represented Trump in big cases, from the Trump University suit to an unsuccessful libel case against journalist Timothy O’Brien. Cohen, by contrast, has made light of his own poor performance at a lesser law school, a classmate told the AP. And while he practiced law for a time, Cohen made his fortune as a real-estate and taxi mogul, not in courtrooms.
Adam Davidson, who has reported at length on Trump Organization deals overseas, notes that Cohen was heavily involved in projects abroad, some of which have since come under scrutiny over whether Trump did insufficient due diligence. “He was not part of the Trump Org legal team in any real sense,” Davidson writes. “Trump Org lawyers either set up contracts for deals others had brought or they handled litigation. Cohen did neither. He was a deal maker. The only non-Trump deal maker doing all those international deals.”
Consider Cohen’s three most prominent appearances connected to the Trump campaign. One came in August 2016, when, on CNN, Brianna Keillar confronted Cohen with the fact that polls showed his boss trailing. Cohen demanded to know which polls, to which Keillar replied, “All of them.” Whatever role Cohen was playing there, it wasn’t legal, nor was it politically informed.
More telling were the other two. In 2015, The Daily Beast uncovered an old anecdote in which Ivana Trump had accused Donald of marital rape. (She later backed away from the claim—and signed a sweeping gag order in her divorce agreement.) Cohen’s threat to the Beast was less legal than brutal: “I will make sure that you and I meet one day while we’re in the courthouse. And I will take you for every penny you still don’t have. And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know. So I’m warning you, tread very fucking lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be fucking disgusting. You understand me?” On matters of law, however, he was shaky, arguing that one could not legally rape a spouse—which hasn’t been true in New York since 1984.
The other was the agreement with Daniels, which came shortly before the election. The details and legality of that agreement remain up for dispute, but Trump has said that he was unaware of the agreement, and Cohen says he paid Daniels out of his own pocket, raising questions about whether Cohen was serving as Trump’s personal lawyer or something else. Daniels has also accused Cohen of sending a man to threaten her, which would be, to put it delicately, extra-legal.
Indeed, both of these cases show Cohen more in a “fixer” role than as a lawyer.
Could attorney-client privilege not even apply here?

They opened a mega-mall here a few years back…..and to no one’s surprise, it totally killed off the downtown core.
Columbus, in one of their more stupid civic panning mistakes, built a freaking mall downtown to revitalize it back in ‘89. Nothing like an enclosed mall in a city center. It was like a concrete fortress that had few openings to the actual city. Very uninviting from a street level.
Then the owner operator opened a newer mall years later in the Dublin suburb area of to the northwest that stated a decline. When Les Wexner (L-Brands) decided to build Easton Town Center in the Northwest, a downtown like, more open center of individual and joined shops, it declined even more.
Then Glimcher Realty, out of I believe Cleveland, opened Polaris Fashion Place, another combo-mall and faux downtown setting up north on I-71. It was the knockout punch. By 2009 City Center Mall was gone…concrete dust.
But it left the city a huge downtown parking garage and a big hole the city turned into a commons park-like area. The parking garage now acts as the parking area for new mixed high rise buildings that have lower floor office/retail and upper floor condo/apartments that are actually real downtown buildings…with people.
What a concept…they are actually putting people into downtown that work in Ohio government, insurance and banking business, etc.
Since online shopping is now killing all malls a little at a time, thankfully the downtown is actually alive and well with restaurants, smaller more intimate shops and entertainment. And now it is booming. People actually live and work downtown and it all supports itself. Amazing, who would have thought people was the answer to a city’s downtown.
What a waste in materials and dollars it all was and is. And so circular in how it all went.

The Delano Police Department has forwarded a report to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office requesting criminal charges against two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who police say lied about a chase that eventually led two undocumented immigrants to crash their vehicle. Santo Hilario Garcia and Marcelina Garcia Profecto, farm workers and parents of six children, were killed at the scene. Delano, California, police say that following the deadly crash, ICE agents gave them information that did not match up with surveillance footage:
Shortly after the March 13 crash, a deportation officer told police officers that his car followed in the same direction of a vehicle he was attempting to stop, but that he was not in “pursuit with emergency lights/sirens,” according to a statement provided in a Delano Police Department traffic collision report.
But surveillance footage obtained by the Police Department showed that one of two cars driven by the deportation officers had its front and rear emergency lights activated and the second had its rear emergency lights activated. A time stamp showed the couple’s car at 06:48:42 traveling at a faster rate of speed than other traffic. At 06:48:52, two cars that matched the deportation officers’ vehicles followed with the lights activated, according to the report.

It’s real, but it’s also from 2013.
Oh thank dog. Not noticing the date is my flaw - also a good reason not to be on twitter as I assume that would constantly happen to me over and over again.

“I don’t remember what he said, but I know he didn’t give me any improper orders” only makes sense if you’re stoned, concussed, or lying your ass off.

Pathetic especially given the attacks on her father.

Imagine if they find evidence that Cohen coordinated with Wilileaks to order the mail dump. Game over at that point. All the dots would be connected.
My fear is that somebody’s going to suggest, and Fox and the rest of the devoted Trumptards will believe, that Cohen, Manafort, Gates, Flynn, Papadopolous, Kushner, Sessions, Junior, Prince, Thiel, Mercer, Bannon, Stone, etc all conspired behind Pumpkin Pinochet’s back… he knew none of it, he’s the victim here.
I remember when I thought Meaghan McCain could be a thoughtful voice. That was a good one.

Are you not aware we can read your old tweets?
Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!

That’s their last-ditch firewall, ala Iran-Contra: “They took advantage of his power to pursue their own ends! He’s the victim here!”

Oh, I’m certain that’s already going around. That’s one reason why people hate Kushner and Ivanka, they’re sure that the “globalists” are there manipulating daddy.
