Video: Colbert on Trump’s Cringeworthy Day With Emmanuel Macron

Humor • Views: 33,913

YouTube

Donald Trump welcomed the French President and First Lady to the White House. Or at least he tried to.

Stay tuned after the absurdly offensive “dandruff-brushing” dominance ritual for Trump’s handshake with Macron; it’s more like the start of a wrestling match than a real handshake, as Macron and Trump jockey for position and roughly yank each other around.

What’s going on in our White House is so freaking bizarre.

I was in my car this morning listening to Macron’s speech. At first, I could hear all of Congress applauding his historical references to Lafayette and Alan Seeger…then, after he finished with the historical commonalities, he said he was not a fan of rabid nationalism, and the volume of the response decreased by half. By the time he got to “There is no Planet B” I could tell that the Democrats were going ape shit and the Republicans were hoping to god they weren’t caught on camera cringing.

I was actually applauding while I drove.

say it again: it you want to defend your own home with your own gun, then I guess that is your good right and nobody is coming to take that away.

but do not delude yourself into thinking that a public active shooter situation is anything at all similar: there you have to have years of training and experience, good situational awareness and nerves of steel if you expect to do more good than harm.

As they said on Daily Kos, this shooting proved once and for all that it’s a person with a guns that performs these kinds of killings. The guy had a gun, four dead. The guy has his gun taken away, no more dead. If, you shoot the person with the gun, you’ve removed the human, therefore he can’t use the gun any more.

More revelations about Ronny Jackson from the New York Times.

Can you smell it? Burnt Ronny. He’s done, but watch Trump dig in. Even if Ronny was giving out opioids, which Trump is supposedlly against.

NYT - New Allegations Emerge Against Ronny Jackson as White House Digs In

WASHINGTON — Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, the White House physician nominated to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, provided “a large supply” of Percocet, a prescription opioid, to a White House military office staff member, throwing his own medical staff “into a panic” when the medical unit could not account for the missing drugs, according to a summary of questionable deeds compiled by the Democratic staff of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

A nurse on his staff said Dr. Jackson had written himself prescriptions, and when caught, he asked a physician assistant to provide the medication. And at a Secret Service going away party, the doctor got intoxicated and “wrecked a government vehicle,” according to the summary.

The two-page summary fleshes out three categories of accusations — prescription drug misuse, hostile work environment and drunkenness — that threaten to derail President Trump’s nominee. It details the testimony of 23 current and former colleagues of Dr. Jackson, many of whom are still in the military.

It’s not just Trump that’s digging in, it’s wingnuts across the nation. Their entire argument for Jackson’s confirmation is “It’ll piss off the libruls that Trump won!”

From what I’ve gathered, the hostile work environment stems mostly from a rivalry/feud that Jackson had with another doctor in the White House Medical Unit. That’s obviously not great, but I think it’s something that many people who work in offices can at least relate to.

As for the drugs and drinking, it sounds like Jackson may have had an addiction problem. If that’s the case, and he’s sought treatment and continues to work on his recovery, I’m not necessarily willing to hold that against him.

The ultimate problem with his nomination is the problem that was first seen when the nomination was made. Jackson has never led any sort of large organization. He’s the only naval doctor to reach the rank of admiral without leading a naval hospital. Obviously the WHMU is an important position, but it’s much more akin to running a small general practice than a hospital. And running a Department as large as the VA is much more akin to running a hospital than a general practice. That’s the reason he’s not qualified.

Also, I was watching Maddow last night and she made the point that no VA nominee has ever got less than a unanimous vote in the Senate. And a very big reason for that is because the Senators who oversee the VA and other veteran/military issues expect to be kept in the loop and consulted on picks. Trump chose Jackson with no vetting, no interview, and purely on a whim.

I wonder if Jackson felt obligated to accept the nomination because he’s active duty (and also, that should be an issue, active duty personnel should not have cabinet level positions).

For example, if you plan to be in the Washington DC area, there are lots of things to see. Abingdon Va (bottom of the Shenandoah Valley, near the Tennessee border, would have a different list.)

I’m taking the rest of the week off of work, because it turns out there’s such a thing as too much vacation, or at least too much accrued vacation!

So, I took Rango for a nice long walk in our favorite park, Laurelwood/Sugarloaf Mountain. It’s really beautiful right now, probably the peak of Spring green before it starts drying up.

The view up the canyon from the top of the dam…

Rango, checking to see who else has been commenting before posting…

The Trail Center had built a new trail connecting the far meadow area with a trail to the top of the hill, so Rango and I headed up to the top. Lots of wildflowers, but I think these were the prettiest. “Chinese Houses”, aka San Francisco collinsia, growing right next to the trail.

Close to the top of the hill, the oak woods and chaparral give way to grassland, and there are a gazillion flowers right now. Here are some poppies, some lupine, and some of those little purple bastards that you see all over every grassy area on the Peninsula this time of year.

“WE MADE IT, MA! TOP OF THE WORLD, MA!!”

Hey, YOU try and take a selfie outdoors with a Greyhound and get the sign into it, too!

I’m going to be visiting North Carolina and Virginia in mid July. Does anyone know of any good places to visit? So far, we have plans to stay in Raleigh.

Just an hour down the freeway (or whatever they call them there), Greensboro International Civil Rights Center & Museum, formerly known as Woolworth’s. There’s also a bike shop that’s practically a museum, but to each one’s own.

We’ll be staying closer to the coast in VA and NC. We’re looking for historical places, places of interest, and places to hike. We’re already planning on visiting Duke and a Plantation in Creswell.

I’ll dig up and post a more complete list of suggestions later. But off the top of my head…

Virginia
- Colonial Williamsburg
- Yorktown
- Virginia Beach (At the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Major naval base.)
- Great Dismal Swamp

North Carolina
- Kitty Hawk and Outer Banks

You got that backwards… Trump was a precursor to Kardashianism. Why did Trump become famous in the 80s? Because he was rich and went on TV as much as he could. He didn’t actually accomplish anything of note, he just got his ugly mug on TV and magazines as much as possible. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, Wrestlemanias at the Trump Taj Mahal, Larry King whenever they didn’t have someone else to talk to… Trump is the ur-Kardashian.

As VB’s just-now post of poll numbers shows, pretty much there is no moving of public opinion from what it is now.

That reminds me, Jones bike shop in Long Beach, that had been around since the 30’s1910 closed down a couple weeks ago. Owners wanted to retire, rent was apparently going up, some chatter that the manager(s) may try and buy and reopen in a new place. It was sad to see such a long standing independent bike shop shutter.

Then again, that seems to be in the air. The Don the Beachcomber not too far down PCH also recently closed because the building owner either wanted to sell or redevelop the property.

Not much of anything, really. Just that they won’t be able to get much/any direct testimony or evidence from Cohen. But they’ll still be able to pursue evidence from other places.

And they’ll still be able to depose him, he’ll have to assert the privilege on every question, then they’ll have to go before the judge to determine whether it’s a valid assertion of the privilege.

I agree with ckkatz’s list with one exception: Unless you have a deep interest in naval aviation, scratch Virginia Beach off the list. I recall its beach as being one of the ugliest in the continental US, and if you do decide to stop there, don’t book a room near the top of the hotel, as the naval jets will sound like tornadoes going overhead.

Once you’re in NC, if you like barbecue, I’d detour a little from the coast to the Rocky Mount area, a mecca for eastern-NC style BBQ. I wish I could send you to the great Melton’s, but it was wiped out years ago in Hurricane Floyd. Even so, you can’t go very wrong here. When you smell the hickory smoke and you’re hungry, pull in. Keep in mind this is eastern NC. Don’t look for gooey red sweet/sour sauce. Eastern BBQ is mainly about vinegar and peppers.

Enjoy your trip.

If Trump is still President when Cohen gets a criminal trial (will he? with what will he be charged?), I wonder if Trump will be able to restrain from commenting daily on the court proceedings.

I realize that the Stormy case is a civil case. For this, is it a bad thing for Cohen to not testify? Can not a jury find him culpable of damages just on the evidence that is probably currently in the hands of the FBI?

In a civil trial, the trier of fact (jury or judge) may draw a negative inference from invoking the Fifth Amendment privilege. But they are not required to. It will also prohibit Cohen from being able to testify at trial or via declaration for motions on anything that he previously asserted the privilege on. So, he’s potentially put himself in a bind on the civil suit, but he’s probably more worried about the criminal case against him.

Rudy getting in on ‘things’ now too. Met with Mueller to negotiate some kind of deal for a Bob & Donny talk about obstruction. Probably trying to find the lay of the land too…snooping around.

WaPo - Giuliani reopens negotiations about presidential interview with Mueller, but cautions special counsel that Trump remains resistant

Rudolph W. Giuliani, President Trump’s new personal lawyer dealing with the ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, met with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III on Tuesday to reopen negotiations for a presidential interview, according to three people familiar with the talks.

Giuliani, who joined Trump’s legal team last week, conveyed the ongoing resistance of Trump and his advisers to an interview with federal investigators, but did not rule out the possibility, the people said, adding that Giuliani pressed Mueller for clarity on when the probe is expected to end.

In response, Mueller reiterated that he would like a chance to ask Trump questions about steps he took during the transition and early months of his administration, the people said. The special counsel emphasized, as he did in conversations in March with Trump’s team, that an interview is essential for investigators to understand Trump’s intent in making key decisions as they seek to wrap up the portion of the probe focused on potential obstruction of justice.

The people familiar with the meeting requested anonymity to describe the encounter because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The face-to-face discussions illustrated how Giuliani is functioning as Trump’s chief liaison and lead negotiator with the special counsel. The meeting renewed talks that had largely faltered since the resignation last month of John Dowd, a veteran lawyer who was serving as Trump’s lead outside attorney on the investigation.

“I’m doing it because I hope we can negotiate an end to this for the good of the country and because I have high regard for the president and for Bob Mueller,” Giuliani said in an interview with The Washington Post last week.

Trump said in a statement last week that Giuliani “wants to get this matter quickly resolved.”

I think we have to see Cohen being in at least two messes now. Possibly two charges/trials…though I am not a law expert.

First case, the one he is pleading the 5th is Stormy’s lawyer suit of Trump which has turned to Cohen not coming clean about the actual legals aspects of how he did the NDA.

The other case might be Cohen’s raid and searches of his living and office spaces, etc. Seems a whole pile of other legal problems are coming out of that, like is he a lawyer if he has one or three clients and what does he do for Trump and how all that may be obstruction, etc.

Before it is all over Cohen is going to get a real lesson in law.

There’s a balancing test that applies when it comes to instructions on how to treat the privilege. It comes down to the party’s Fifth Amendment interests, the other party’s right to a fair trial, and the availability of evidence from other sources.

It really does come down to what I see as the fundamental difference between the parties these days: are you interested in making sure people are treated equally in the eyes of the law (and hopefully society) or are you more motivated by your own self-interest.

History means that for a lot of minorities, Democrats can appeal to both types of people - because even those minorities who might be motivated out of self-interest are going to see that the Democrats are the party working to improve their lot. The exceptions to this are, in most cases, going to be those who have enough money to insulate them from the realities of the life “regular” people face.

This is, of course, an oversimplification, but the general strokes work pretty well as a framework.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I read over the weekend on AI potentially eliminating 60% of jobs. The impact of that, if it were to come to pass, would be incredibly far reaching. It could potentially tank the commercial real estate market as computers would take a lot less space than people. It could mean we could/would have to convert a lot of commercial/industrial properties to residential use, and we’d still likely end up with a lot of empty buildings.

I am also still intrigued by the housing first program that GW Bush had that was based on the simple idea of giving homeless people a place to live as the first step in solving homelessness and all the other issues that come with it.

That along with the idea of universal basic income and/or a federal jobs guarantee are going to be occupying a lot of my time in the near future.

The fancy footwork is in the definition of the reference frames. In the earth-star system, the person is staying within the same inertial reference frame. In the spaceship, however, the person is changing between 3 inertial reference frames. He starts from the earth-star reference, then he is on a high-speed journey away from earth (reference 2), then he is on a high-speed journey toward earth (reference 3). In that sense, there’s no way to cast the earth-star system as the thing that moves, because it’s not undergoing any acceleration (changing reference frames).

Be sure to watch closely the video. Dr. Lincoln points out that acceleration has nothing to do with the difference. This is why he replaces the original twin-paradox with a thought experiment with a new traveler, “C”.

re: #164 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I think that the reason they lean hard Democrat right now is because the Democratic party is the one that is actually committed to doing at least some of the things that try to untilt the playing field against them.

If we managed that world where racism had been eradicated and its trickle-down effects mitigated, do I think they would still predominantly vote D? My gut says no, that the split is going to morph into something much more balanced, because they are human in the same way as any other group of people. But this is all supposition anyway.

Yeah I think you said it better than I could. Most African-Americans lean hard Democratic because yeah the party is actually committed on those issues. Obviously, the Dems can’t take those voters for granted and in fact in recent years I think they’ve gotten better at it. I really like how Doug Jones specifically thanked African-American women as being the backbone of the party in his victory speech.

Fair enough. After all, there’s not supposed to be any math.

I did have to go to Wikipedia to try and understand why the question was so difficult, and in the process, learned that there’s still quite a bit of active debate on the role acceleration plays in causing the disparate aging.

I read it as “balls”.

That’s how I read it too. I don’t think there was anything ballsy said. Kanye’s been kissing up to Trump for sometime and Chance didn’t say anything that courageous. No one’s said that black people have to be Democrats ever. In fact, it could be a neutral comment for all I know.

Yeah, but you have to admit basketballs carry some meaning too. Thus the wondering.

I admit, I don’t give a lot of room for a Trump doing the right thing. Call it based on history.

Dr. Lincoln tries again, which I think is good, but he’s still not fully addressed the the knotty question of why we can’t recast the “two frames” argument as applying to the earth, when we cast the experiment as the earth and star moving and not the guy in the rocket:

[Embedded content]

Because the situations are not symmetrical. One frame has undergone acceleration, which is not relative, and the other one has not. Special Relativity can’t handle this.

I suspect that being on the spectrum makes Happy and me read it without filtering it through our justified bias against Trump people.

The problem with paradox-creating is that in constructing a paradox we can put in cryptic assumptions.

In this case, you are correct that in the twin-paradox that acceleration has been inserted, with the guy on the rocket having to make a U-turn at the star.

This is the real problem, in my opinion, with the twin-paradox: by introducing that turn the construction confuses the issue.

This is why Dr. Lincoln went to a new model of the problem, with an extra actor, “C”.

Yet, and Dr. Lincoln didn’t make this clear, his new model of the issue is not a perfect representation of the original twin-paradox. The original twin-paradox hides the fact that there are three reference frames, not two.

This takes some careful thought, and as someone who didn’t do so well in my Special Relativity class in college (in fact, of all my physics classes it was the one in which I got my lowest grade), I’ve had to struggle to work through my own mis-understandings.

Maybe Kanye doesn’t care, because he’s Kanye, but he is alienating a HUGE swath of his fans. Many of them are my son’s age and his generation, as a whole, cannot stand Trump. And his African-American audience aren’t Trump fans either. The middle aged white vote is not exactly Kanye’s demographic.

Dumb ass.

I dunno man. I think Trump Jr really meant to say big balls and found the biggest ball emoji he could find. I’m not saying it’s wrong to think that he could have meant something else but I think here individually it could be the most simple explanation. I think it’s adorable that Donnie Jr is trolling Twitter looking for black people that even say somewhat nice things about his Dad and ignoring that it was black voters’ disgust with him that allowed us to win a seat in Alabama of all places.

Yeah all Kanye’s going to do here is impress a bunch of old farts like Trump and his son who never were listening to his music anyhow.

He’ll get the, “Look, the blacks love me!” treatment. Trump will use him for every drop of “my black friend” energy he can find.

But hey, if Kanye is being real and genuinely likes Trump and the MAGA scene, OK. Just gives me another reason to listen to more talented artists like Kendrick Lamar.

Exactly. I’ve never been a big Kanye fan anyhow. I find him obnoxious as hell. Between him and Donald, there’s old enough air to fill up a fleet of hot air balloons.

Wilmington, NC is pretty interesting. Old coastal town with the characteristic charm and Spanish Moss. An old battleship, some nice beaches, and a nice aquarium down at Fort Fisher. Also a state park at the remains of a Civil War era fort (seaward side has eroded into the ocean already.)

re: #126 whitebeach

A couple of museums and things in Norfolk, VA. MacArthur stuff, a museum related to the naval stuff in the area which also includes an old battleship (USS Wisconsin). I also visited the Norfolk Botanical Garden while the Camillas were blooming when I stayed there overnight on one trip.
