The push back by the Courts will come in due time. We have to remember that the Courts are reactive rather than proactive. Judges don’t go out looking for cases to decide, people bring cases to the Courts. The obvious case here will be if/when Trump refuses to comply with a subpoena from Mueller. But there will likely be other cases because this is Stupid Watergate and it’s only right that we see multiple cases instead of just one.
As for Congress, the GOP leadership has thrown in with Trump for reasons that make no sense. That makes November critical, if the Democrats take back control of at least one House, they have control of the committees and can perform real push back.

We keep saying stuff like that - “Lower income white voters are voting against their own interest!”, but is it really true? It certainly isn’t true as THEY see their interest.
We look at Trumps’ bullshitting his supporters with promises that steel and coal are coming back, that his health care plan will cover everyone better for cheaper and be ‘so easy’, that he’d tax rich hedge fund managers more, and of course he breaks those promises and we say, “Will his White Working Class supporters leave him?”
No, they won’t. The things he was obviously lying about were just the icing on the cake for them. The Muslim Ban; deportations; ICE becoming the new SS; empowering cops to keep right on abusing black people; sticking it to experts and the media - THOSE were why they elected him and he’s doing those.
For the GOP in Congress, you gotta figure the entire ‘Freedom Caucus’ absolutely fucking LOVES what Trump is doing, and I’d bet a lot of the more ‘moderate’ GOPers are on the same page - but they’ve had to run as ‘Not A Swivel-Eyed Loon’ to get elected. And the ones who don’t like what he’s doing on immigration, or North Korea, or whatever fucking LOVE the tax cuts and the Conservative judges he’s nominating to the spots McConnell held open for him.
So, we need to stop thinking they don’t LOVE what he’s doing, and figure AT MOST they don’t like his style but love the results.

There’s the ones that want the system to fail, because they have fantasies about what ideology they can substitute in its place…with them at the top, as the arbiters.
There’s the ones that just want everything torn done because they want unfiltered power, and imagine they’ll be kings of the wasteland.
There’s the ones that are trying to pillage as much as possible.
Extortion is costly and risking. Giving people enough of what they want is much more efficient. If there weren’t oligarchs and international crooks pulling threads, the wingnuts would be doing almost exactly the same thing, just a little less brazenly.
The GOP has been defined by contempt for democratic norms for a long time. When they took in the Dixiecrats, Nixon, Reagan’s welfare queens and childlike liberals who could be ignored, Gingrich’s bullsht, Bush/Cheney fucking us all with Iraq and Homeland Security, birthers…at each step, the base accepted the premise that only they get to decide…and also that they didn’t own anything that went wrong. This didn’t come from nowhere.

They deny every other part of reality. Sounds pretty par for the course, standard wingnuttia.
I was talking with Mrs. FBW the other day, trying to explain why Trump kept attacking Sessions for not protecting him “like Holder protected Obama”, and I realized that Trump has completely bought into all the wingnut conspiracies about Obama, whether it be Benghazi, or the IRS thing, or whatever. To Trump, all these bullshit things that were endlessly investigated and turned out not to be true - they’re all TRUE, and so to him the only way Obama could have escaped unscathed is that Holder blocked the investigations somehow. Leave aside the fact that the GOP Congress investigated these things, too, and found nothing.
Trump believes them, because he, like a lot of his followers, really, truly believes what Fox News tells him more than he believes what his own Intelligence Community tells him.
We’re in this weird world now, where not only is Fox News essentially State Run Media, like Pravda in the old USSR, but also it’s the President’s primary source of information. This would be like Kruschev or Brezhnev telling Pravda what to print, but then BELIEVING IT, even knowing they’d made them print it.
We cannot get rid of these fuckers too soon.

I completely agree about the Freedumb Caucus being fully on board with Trump (as well as those voters driven by racial resentment). As for the moderates, there are two explanations that seem reasonable: either they’re also on board as you’ve suggested; or they’re terrified of the GOP base and being challenged in the primary by A Swivel-Eyed Loon. So either: they agree and are terrible; or, they’re acting out of a sense of self-preservation and are terrible.
The end result of their terribleness should be enough for them to lose/retire. But I am still interested in the “why” because we can’t really understand everything without knowing that bit of information.

Former NFL player lays waste to the league’s hypocrisy on the American flag with one perfect photo https://t.co/6gv2uWdbqC

Writing on Twitter, the former player attacked the new NFL initiative by saying that “forced patriotism is the opposite of freedom.”
He also said that, while he had the utmost respect for the men and women in America’s military, “peaceful protests are extremely important for us to remain a free country.”
Rosenfels then dropped the hammer on the NFL itself by quoting the official U.S. flag code that was established in the 1940s.
“The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery,” the code reads in part. “The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any way whatsoever.”
He then posted a photo of an official player jersey being sold by the NFL that incorporates the flag into a player’s number — which is a direct violation of the U.S. flag code.

It’s a narcissist thing, whether clinical or just lower-case n.

A couple of years ago, at about 3:00 A.M. my local time, I was out on my balcony (a touch of insomnia) and I saw a very bright flash in the sky - lit up everything. Followed by a massive boom.
And there wasn’t a cloud in the sky - perfectly clear conditions. I figured it had to be some kind of bolide exploding. There were some reports from locals who’d reported being either awakened by the blast (which was pretty damn loud) or seeing the same thing I did…..a bright flash in the night sky followed by an almighty boom.

re: #118 JordanRules
Refusing to waive the right to a speedy trial can work as a pressure tactic on small cases because more often than not the prosecutor is relying on the investigation done by law enforcement. A local assistant DA doesn’t have the time/resources to interview witnesses and confirm facts.
In this case, the prosecutor (who just happens to be the former head of a little agency called the FBI) has spent a year collecting evidence and building a case. The fact that there are rooms full of bankers boxes worth of documentary evidence is no surprise. The defense would be at a major disadvantage if they only gave themselves a two months to review everything before a trial.
In other words: it was a tactical mistake that someone who hasn’t defended a major case like this would make.

Interesting read in the LA Times:
At 84 and seeking a fifth full term in November, Feinstein has moved left as well, though not far enough for some Democrats. She still gets boos from her party’s progressive wing. But on a series of issues, Feinstein is changing long-held positions, at times overriding her time-tested instinct for centrism.
Most surprising, Feinstein recently announced quietly that she no longer supports capital punishment — a dramatic reversal of the position she embraced during that iconic appearance at the 1990 convention.
Similarly, after decades opposing legalizing marijuana use, Feinstein said this month that she supports a federal law keeping the government from interfering in states such as California that choose to legalize marijuana use.
For the record, I like Feinstein, and have voted for her more often than not. But there is a part of me that wonders if it’s time for a change.

The push back by the Courts will come in due time. We have to remember that the Courts are reactive rather than proactive. Judges don’t go out looking for cases to decide, people bring cases to the Courts.

Interestingly, there’s a new poll for the Senate and gubernatorial races that includes every candidate in our blanket primary and it shows 41% undecided in the Senate election. Interesting read in the LA Times:
For the record, I like Feinstein, and have voted for her more often than not. But there is a part of me that wonders if it’s time for a change.
i hear and read this a lot
if it’s time for a change then soemone has to run against her, appeal to enough people and win
otherwise in the sphere of politics, it doesnt mean much of anything

Those justices didn’t watch a lot of FOX.
This is a new era - being appointed back then still meant a certain level of competence and respect for the law, neither of which applies any more. Trump appointees are chosen for ideology, which directly translates to how much they believe in the cult. Competence is not required, either for appointment or confirmation, and is in fact a hindrance.
Republican Congresspeople now mostly belong to a destructive cult that is actively opposing the United States, which is a reality that would never have been countenanced previously. They have willingly conceded power to a network of oligarchs and criminals. I see no reason to believe the US courts cannot similarly be overcome by converting its members into insane cultists.
Well, luckily, the two grand juries are in the 4th Circuit, where Trump has yet to appoint a judge to the Court of Appeal (he has two pending nominations). And he only has one appointee on the Supreme Court. Roberts, for all his flaws, does seem to understand the importance of not only the Supreme Court but the courts generally as a co-equal branch and I can’t see him ruling for Trump in these kinds of cases. And the issue is likely too important to have anything other than a unanimous ruling (Alito would be the most likely to argue for executive privilege, but I don’t think that’s likely either).

Trump isn’t “misquoting” anything. He’s lying, trying to reconstruct reality to his own advantage. Well, de Leon is running against her, and I suspect it will be D vs D in the general, so perhaps we will see that change.

The roofer has finished inspecting. He estimates the total cost of replacing both our roofs and repairing the damage to the ceiling inside will be $5,005.
My wife told him she thinks that last $5 might break us.
They told me $23k to fix my house. I put it closer to $40k. We’re in litigation now.
Cautiously pleased at this, but suspecting a trap, because Trump: NASA head Jim Bridenstine, once doubtful, confirms he believes humans are the leading cause of climate change https://t.co/pFZDv14R44

Yikes. $40,000 is more than every thing we own is worth.
The roofer in question (Wildcat Roofing and Firearms Supply) is the company everyone in town recommends for work. The insurance company also recommended them.
Right now they’re busier than a one-armed paper hanger. The roofer noted they had four other projects just up the dirt road from us, a couple here in town now, and had to move a shooting range yesterday.

The Saudi Crown Prince bragged Kushner (who had access to the presidential daily brief) gave him the names of “disloyal” royal family members. A week later, dozens of those people were arrested in a violent purge. This is not a fucking coincidence. https://t.co/fLjzYnjldi

I was just saying watch before signing checks from the insurance company.
I had a water leak. Before the tenant got the water turned off it ruined part of the upstairs wood flooring, the walls on the first floor bedroom below the bathroom, the first floor wood flooring and the basement ceiling. It cost $14k just to mitigate and dry out. And it was supposed to only be $9k for all the repairs?
Just saying the insurance company isn’t looking out for you or your house. Because you’re part of a CAT (catastrophe) claim, you might fare better. Just be aware.

Which means that Congressional Republicans will demand Bridenstine’s immediate resignation; if he refuses to do that, they’ll push Trump to fire him.

So Jared enabled a purge. Lovely guy but yeah we should see him and Ivanka as “moderating influences.”

Jared Kushner was granted a permanent security clearance, ending a period of uncertainty about whether he was in peril in the Mueller probe https://t.co/WJ9BEZPKoC
— NYT Politics (@nytpolitics) May 23, 2018
Today the White House and Jared Kushner’s representatives are saying that the decision to grant Mr. Kushner’s clearance was made by career personnel, and that this decision was the deserved outcome of an above-board process.
Both claims are false or misleading. 1/ https://t.co/btNV7RwhVd— Rep. Don Beyer (@RepDonBeyer) May 23, 2018
So sick of Tammy Lala, the Crisis Pornstar.
Might be time for the Twitter filter.
Many of us know former colleagues who lost their security clearance because they fell behind on student loans—or ran into other seemingly minor issues. It’s hard to square this decision with that reality unless there was a lower bar for Kushner. https://t.co/LeNJezqtbz
— Ned Price (@nedprice) May 23, 2018
.@FBI does not grant or adjudicate security clearances. Decision to give Jared Kushner a clearance was made solely by the White House. Kushner omitted his Trump Tower meeting not once, but TWICE on his SF-86s. If he wasn’t the son-in-law of @POTUS, he would not have a clearance https://t.co/6FNcMZJAQn

I also wouldn’t be surprised if “permanent clearance” is not a misnomer — as has been widely assumed — but an actual designation the admin invented. They have been trying to install a dynastic kleptocracy since day one. Protocol, logic and law are of no concern to them. https://t.co/da5nQ02ctv

The Right spent 40 or more years convincing everyone that all government, and all politicians are corrupt by 1) accusing Democrats of corruption scandal after corruption scandal and 2) Being corrupt as fuck themselves. Then they went with a sales pitch that’s basically, “Yeah, we’re corrupt. But we REALLY hate brown and black people. Vote for us!”
