Marc Maron Is Great on the Late Show: We Turned Our Brains Over to Technology

Science • Views: 39,337

YouTube

‘Glow’ star and ‘WTF’ podcaster Marc Maron remembers a time before people could Google the name of that guy who invented peanut oil.

Marc Maron is killing it here, but what makes it interesting beyond that is the weirdly reserved reaction of the audience. This is some great smart funny shit, but they just sit there for some of the best parts, and I do not understand why.

Lightly off-topic, but one of my liberal Christian friends posted a long list of (mostly moderate-liberal) evangelical and orthodox sects of Christianity that have made public statements against the Trump administration’s cruel immigration policies. It’s actually fairly lengthy, but missing the most obvious suspects - the Pentecostals. The reason why is obvious: They are the franchises that have invested most heavily in the Republican image of God, Guns, Abortion. They are going down with the ship, and despite my storied history as a flaming Pentecostal, I can’t say I’m sorry to see them go. Religion needs to stay relevant, and the Pentecostal movement flamed out in the 1990’s as society rapidly emerged from the 1950’s “golden age of Christianity”. I’d really rather they just quietly go away and stop making the rest of us look bad.

How go things among the lizardfolk on this cloudy, wet, rainy Tuesday? I’m sick of the rain. We need a good dry spell.

I can explain the reserved reaction. Audiences can be challenged, criticized by a good comic. But scolded over favorite devices like cell phones? Nobody is that good.

Sick of the dry spell and wishing we had rain.

Seriously!

Last night was the first time I’ve ridden on my usual cycling route since early May, and all the wildflowers are gone, everything’s brown, and the air was real fucking dry, I can tell you.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California would lead the U.S. in significantly changing the standard for when police can fire their weapons under legislation that cleared its first hurdle Tuesday after an emotionally charged debate over deadly shootings that have roiled the country.

It’s time to change a “reasonable force” standard that hasn’t been updated in California since 1872, making it the nation’s oldest unchanged use-of-force law, said Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, a San Diego Democrat who introduced the measure.

“It must be guided by the goals of safeguarding human life,” she said.

A state Senate committee advanced the legislation that would allow police to use deadly force only in situations where it is necessary to prevent imminent and serious injury or death to the officer or another person.

Now, California’s standard makes it rare for officers to be charged after a shooting and rarer still for them to be convicted. Frequently it’s because of the doctrine of “reasonable fear”: if prosecutors or jurors believe that officers have a reason to fear for their safety, police can use deadly force.

I like a good stand.

In a fair fight.

Will the media give the Dems that fairness? Or, will they say the Democrats are being obstructionist and partisan and hurting the families as much as any Republican?

We have to catch the media in the mood to ride along with the Dems, but it is going to be touchy.

The Dems many times find themselves in a damned if you do/don’t story.

And the media loves to run out and talk to the misunderstood Trump bigot voter in Iowa for their take on immigration that makes is sound like that is what fly-over country wants.

This is one of the highlights of the Information Age. The near-instantaneous dissemination of information has plenty of drawbacks, but one of the advantages is that it is nearly literally impossible to keep a conspiracy to commit mass murder, or other crimes against humanity, a secret for very long. And once exposed, there are enough decent people still left that the public outcry can force the perpetrators to flinch.

Here’s the most important takeaway: the journey itself is the deterrent. It’s one of the, if not *the*, most dangerous journeys a person can undertake. People are doing it for a reason. They are desperate

But truth be told…I am not convinced they are all ready to take Trump on. I think they are testing the waters, but are non-committed to jumping in. Just my opinion. If the protests over this is are strong it will help.

Ewww—both the yam and Pence are coming to SC to campaign for Henry McMaster before next Tuesday’s Republican runoff. They’re being cagey about when and where the yam will be appearing—probably to avoid the protests. Of course, McMaster is 100% behind the fucking yam on his child incarceration (as is his runoff opponent.)

They all make me sick, but, looking for a silver lining, maybe that will end up giving James Smith a boost toward becoming governor.

Hell’s bells, I have even been getting some reactions from some of the RWNJ’s on my FB feed. POSITIVE reactions, that is.

I’ve had mixed experiences. A friend of a friend was doing the whole just follow the law stuff so I pointed out things like the folks being asylum seekers, that illegal immigration is a civil not a criminal matter, and that it would be absurd to separate you from your kids over a traffic violation. I also brought up how expensive the fees were. Person was nasty. But on a cousin’s thread, a friend of hers asked why can’t they just do it legally, I explained some of what I did above and she was willing to listen. So maybe there’s some hope with some conservatives but I don’t know yet. I really don’t.

Family separation is going to be permanent in a lot of these cases, because the authors of this policy are extortionists and don’t give a shit what happens to the children. What’s David French going to think of that? “Oh, whoopsie, our bad. Have some perspective.” What an asshole.

The best food for infants is their mother’s milk. It has all the nutrients the babe needs and protects them from disease and infections. Infants should never be weaned from breast milk overnight - most Moms take weeks to fully wean their children.

I suspect I’ll need more walk breaks as we scratch and claw our way to November. I just love and appreciate how this site keeps me informed of the good and bad because that helps me fight and educate others.

re: #376 Chrysicat

Y’know, I am getting rather tired of re-treading the same territory with pacifists [in reference to nuclear weapons dropped on Japan] even as they and I live in the country that can only be set right via non-pacifist means. This is about halfway down a Bill Kristol thread about that ‘infest’ tweet sounding better in the original German.

re: #388 Anymouse 🌹

I’m not a pacifist.

As far as I can tell from history, the nukes were not necessary.

The two cities bombed were specifically spared regular bombing so we could test our nuclear weapons. We used civilians as a test.

Japan’s Imperial Navy and Air Force were already out of fuel, which is why the bombers got through. The Japanese Air Force could not afford to fly planes to shoot down a single bomber (single planes were viewed as reconnaissance and therefore not an immediate threat).

An invasion of the home islands (touted as the only other solution by those who think in black-and-white) was also unnecessary. The Japanese Empire had already collapsed; the Allies stood on all their territory. All that was required to do was wait until they surrendered. We had enough ships ourselves to blockade Japan fifty times over at that point.

Nah buddy it was part of his 2012 campaign. His solution to janitors wanting more money was to put the kids to work. I always disliked Newt. Coming from a federal household, I remember his involvement in the shutdown of 95.

I remember when that SOB shut the government down from Thanksgiving 1995 till just past New Years 1996. We went 5+ weeks being forced to work and not get paid. Kids had no Christmas that year all because that goddamn thug threw a fit about where he sat on Air Force 1. Until tonight I have hated Gingrich more than anyone else.

We’ve barricaded entire countries before. The Confederacy was under a full-time blockade for four years, with a far longer coastline to patrol than Japan.

We were preparing an invasion (Operation Downfall). It likely would not have been necessary, and even if it was, while Japan might have resisted, their industrial capacity and resources were destroyed. They could no longer make things such as ammunition. The idea that “millions would have died” was post WW2 propaganda by our own military to justify nuking cities.

“The tender years doctrine is a legal principle in family law since the late nineteenth century. In common law, it presumes that during a child’s “tender” years (generally regarded as the age of four and under), the mother should have custody of the child. The doctrine often arises in divorce proceedings.”

No idea where his actual destination is - TL;DR - but anywhere in the Twin Cities area is the place to go if you’re a Republican. That would be bad enough, but then there are the ones who adopt, abuse and kill them, following the “To Rear Up a Child.”

In international adoptions, birth parents were more likely to be erased altogether, as adoption agencies sometimes wrongly claimed that they were dead or dying. Members of the Christian adoption community sometimes spoke of the children in developing nations as an indistinguishable mass, wherein any child of an impoverished parent was viewed as the equivalent of an “orphan” and was labeled as such…

Some adoptive children were abused or even killed at the hands of their adoptive parents, like thirteen-year-old Ethiopian adoptee Hana Williams, whose case I documented in 2013. A shocking number of stories emerged of children who had been sent away from their “forever families,” either to new, un-vetted adoptive homes, back to their countries of origin, or just cast out on the streets.
