An Excellent Tiny Desk Solo Concert by Dave Matthews

Stephen Thompson | June 27, 2018 — When you go to a Dave Matthews Band concert, you expect a super-sized performance, complete with expansive solos and a nice, long set list. So when Matthews shed his backing players to swing by the Tiny Desk for a solo gig, he couldn’t just knock out three songs and bail. Instead, he played a set so long — so defiantly un-Tiny — that his between-song banter could have filled a Tiny Desk concert on its own.

After a bit of judicious trimming, we’re still left with this warm, winning, utterly game, happily overstuffed performance, which balances songs from Dave Matthews Band’s new album Come Tomorrow (“Samurai Cop,” “Here on Out”) with older material (1998’s “Don’t Drink the Water,” 2012’s “Mercy”) and a deeper cut from his 2003 solo album (“So Damn Lucky”). And, we had to leave in some of Matthews’ banter, which includes a priceless bit in which he enthusiastically illustrates some of the many differences between playing on stage with a band and sitting at an office desk with an acoustic guitar.

SET LIST
“Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)”
“Here on Out”
“Don’t Drink the Water”
“Mercy”
“So Damn Lucky”

UK police declare ‘major incident’ near Salisbury after 2 found unconscious

A “major incident” has been declared in the southern English town of Amesbury after two people may have been exposed to what authorities describe as an “unknown substance.”

The incident happened just a few miles away from Salisbury, where British police say Sergei Skripal, a Russian double agent living in the United Kingdom, and his daughter were poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent in March.
It is not clear exactly what the duo in Amesbury, a man and a woman each in their 40s, may have been exposed to.

Amesbury, where the victims were found, is the town closest to Stonehenge; about 2 miles away on the 303.

Amesbury is between Salisbury and Stonehenge. An old WWII base is there (Bascombe Down, still used as a research base). Just southwest is the Old Sarum ruin, an Iron Age Hill Fort that figured highly in a Martha Grimes Richard Jury Mystery.

I’m torn. We finished the first disc of the recently released fifth series of The Americans (killer bee, by the way) and was smoking a cig on the back porch when I heard “Mew!” and looked down to find an orange tom tabby kitten (+/- 9 weeks) saying hello. Sweetheart. Looked healthy, no fleas, and I’m thinking what a cutie! Also, loves scritches. Let him in the house. Went right to the food bowl, had some kibble and a drink of water.

More than likely someone else’s cat. But haven’t seem him before. Alpha cat walked in and kept her hair down. I’ve got chain link all around the back yard and have no idea where he came from. I don’t want/need another cat, but what do I do if he starts hanging around?

Advice, please. I’m a cat guy, but all of them have been litter cats (1) or adult foundlings (2).

Take kitty to the vet to see if it’s got a chip. If it doesn’t then you need to figure out if you’re going to keep it. Probably get it tested for FeLV, etc.

The police in Salisbury initially thought they might have gotten a bad dose of crack cocaine or heroine. They were tested for those, and came up negative. The police now suspect some other substance, but haven’t said what that might be.

They have cordoned off areas the two people were known to have been in during the hours before they were discovered.

There is speculation this is similar to the Skripal case, but as of yet the police nor the Home Office have actually said anything like that. They are still investigating.

Ah, looks like Mr. Racist Priest is gonna get a spanking!

“What occurred at Saint Mary’s Parish this morning does not reflect the Catholic Church’s fundamental calling to respect and uplift the God-given dignity of every person,” wrote the Rev. Michael W. Fisher, who was recently installed as auxiliary bishop for ministerial leadership of the archdiocese, which covers the District and the nearby Maryland suburbs and exurbs. “I want to reach out to you first to offer my prayers for your loved one that God will grant her a place in his kingdom of eternal light and love, and condolences to your family. On days such as today, our response should always be one of compassion and sympathy for the bereaved as well as prayers for the deceased. I reiterate and reinforce the sincere apology you and your family received” earlier.

At least James Watt got Wayne Newton and the Army Blues Band to replace those Gawdless Beach Boys…

Watt was a man ahead of his time, a crazed fundy in government before many people really understood what that meant.

Watt periodically mentioned his Dispensationalist Christian faith when discussing his method of environmental management. Speaking before Congress, he once said, “I do not know how many future generations we can count on before the Lord returns, whatever it is we have to manage with a skill to leave the resources needed for future generations.”

He apologized to the Beach Boys after he found out the Reagans were friends and VP Bush was not only a fan but a personal friend of the group. That was only after the concert with Wayne Newton, who was booed when he went on stage.

Watt continues to disgrace us with his presence (he is now 80).

In a 2001 interview, Watt applauded the energy policy of the Bush administration, stating that its preference of oil drilling and coal mining to conservation was just what he recommended in the early 1980s

He must be in hog heaven over Trump’s slash and burn environmental policies, but I haven’t heard about him in recent years.

Invading Venezuela would be just a really, really bad idea, to say the least. For one thing, their oil infrastructure is a shambles now, and a military assault would only make things worse.

This mean Trump will try it, because it’s a dumb move.

That’s kind of what it looked like from the highway.

The fire was started by some ammosexuals firing tracer rounds at a gun range. They’ve been cited by law enforcement, it is illegal to discharge firearms outside anywhere right now, Stage 2 fire restrictions in effect.

Hundreds of homes are threatened, lots of mandatory evacuations in and around Basalt, CO right now.

Something of a different concern in the Democratic Republic of Congo:

Alarming polio outbreak spreads in Congo, threatening global eradication efforts (Goes to Science Magazine, more at the link):

Overshadowed by the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), another frightening virus is on the loose in that vast, chaotic country: polio. Public health experts have worked for months to stamp out the virus, but it keeps spreading. It has already paralyzed 29 children, and on 21 June a case was reported on the border with Uganda, far outside the known outbreak zone, heightening fears that the virus will sweep across Africa. The DRC is “absolutely” the most worrisome polio outbreak today, says Michel Zaffran, who heads the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The outbreak also underscores the latest complication on the bumpy road toward polio eradication. It is caused not by the wild virus hanging on by a thread in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and perhaps Nigeria, but by a rare mutant derived from the weakened live virus in the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which has regained its neurovirulence and the ability to spread. As OPV campaigns have driven the wild virus to near-extinction, these circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPVs) have emerged as the greatest threat to polio eradication. If the outbreaks are not stopped quickly, polio scientists warn, they could spiral out of control, setting eradication efforts back years.

His foundation also provided computers, and training for the then library director and assistant, along with free lessons for anyone in the village who wanted them.

PS: A Wonkette story. It seems the New York Times has demoted a woman journalist covering the DC beat for having an affair with a staffer in Washington for three years.

New York Times So Touchy About Reporter Who Was Touching Her Source (Sometimes Wonkette URLs do not match the headline they provide; in this case the URL reads “Who Does a New York Times Reporter Have to Shoot to Get Fired Around Here”)

Not sure if the wingnuts will pick up on this, but folks are trying to tie this to leaks from the maladministration.

The New York Times announced Tuesday that it has reassigned reporter Ali Watkins, whose three-year affair with a Senate aide came to light as part of a leak investigation by the Justice Department. Watkins, 26, had a relationship with Senate Intelligence Committee aide James Wolfe, who’s been charged with making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with journalists. Her phone and email records were seized by the Department of Justice as part of the leak probe. The Times said Watkins will be assigned a mentor and transferred to a beat in New York.

Wonkette notes that this is part-and-parcel of the MeToo movement, that to gain access to powerful men, women often have to do things men wouldn’t have to.

In a staff memo, [NYT Editor Dean] Baquet directly addressed the Department of Justice’s brazen actions (pulling her phone and email records for years) and some more by the Department of Homeland Security (spying on her, threatening her, trying to blackmail her, the usual) before detailing the “concerns” he had about Watkins’s conduct

A Michigan gas station manager was fired after her callous response to an employee’s request for time off to be with her son, who was reportedly placed on life support, went viral.

Crystal Fisher, of Albion, told FOX 17 that her son Jason, 18, was rushed to the hospital on Thursday after his temperature spiked to 104 degrees and he had “low oxygen.”

Fisher had her 14-year-old daughter, who was not named in the report, contact her boss at PS Food Mart to let them know she could not make it to work due to her son’s illness.

“[Fisher’s daughter] said, ‘Can you have somebody cover mom for [Friday], my brother’s really sick, they’re going to have to ventilate him,’” Fisher said. “And the boss, I could hear her over the phone and she told my daughter, ‘This ain’t the way we run things, you’re mother needs to be the one calling me.’”

snip

“As a result of this finding, we took quick action and that manager is no longer employed by PS Food Mart. We have also reaffirmed to our employee that she will be able to take all the time off that she needs during this difficult period,” the statement concluded.

Fisher said doctors told her that her son may have a type of sepsis.

“My concern is when my son does wake up and when he does open his eyes, he sees mommy there,” Fisher said.

A plot to hold two Hollywood celebrities for ransom ends.

The woman, identified as Amber Neal, 25, was indicted last month along with Keith Andre Stewart and Johntae Jones in a plot to kidnap and extort an actor and actress in Compton, according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

The trio were charged with 17 felonies, including kidnapping, assault with a firearm and mayhem in connection with an incident that took place in May 2017, court records show.

Prosecutors said Stewart, Jones and Neal went to the home of actress Daisy McCrackin and “pistol whipped” actor Joseph Capone before placing black hoods on both victims. Capone was then taken hostage at a Compton home, where he was stripped naked and held in a bathtub without food for about 30 hours, according to the district attorney’s office.

I knew her brother, Phil.

If he likes you, he’ll keep you. I once was living in an upstairs apartment with a roommate when I looked around the room as we laughed at something on t.v. The giant eunuch cat from downstairs was sitting in a corner of the room, and looked completely shocked that we made him exit the premises. It’s usually less traumatic for everyone if you just let the cat do whatever the hell it wants to do.

Nuts may boost male fertility: study

Eating nuts “significantly” boosted the number and health of sperm in young men in a scientific trial, researchers said Wednesday.

The findings “support a beneficial role for chronic nut consumption in sperm quality,” they said, but stressed the study participants were all healthy, apparently fertile men.

The potential benefits of nuts for men struggling with fertility have yet to be probed.

For the study, researchers recruited 119 men aged 18-35, who they divided into two groups.

One group ate 60 grammes of almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts daily on top of their usual “western-style” diet, while the second group got no nuts.

After 14 weeks, the nut group “had significant improvements in their sperm count, vitality, motility (movement) and morphology (shape)” — all associated with male fertility, said a statement.

“Moreover, the subjects in the nut group also showed a significant reduction in their levels of sperm DNA fragmentation, a parameter closely associated with male infertility.”

Meanwhile back at the Jim Jordan domicile, he plays the Sgt. Schultz card!

“It’s not true,” Jordan told Politico in a Tuesday night interview. “I never knew about any type of abuse. If I did, I would have done something about it. And look, if there are people who are abused, then that’s terrible and we want justice to happen.”

You goddamned liar! You were probably Strauss’ wingman.

The United States of America did this.

At night, Andriy sometimes wakes up screaming in the bunk bed he shares with his mother and baby brother. When he started to wet the bed, Calderon put him back in diapers. Sometimes he throws his tiny body down on the floor, hands behind his back, acting out what happened to his father.

As federal agencies work on reuniting more than 2,000 families that remain apart, affected by the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy, many children are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the separations.

A 1-year-old taken from his father in November still wakes up crying, quieting only when his mother reassures him that she is there. In the first week of living in a Jefferson Park apartment, he would grab his mother’s legs and start to cry if someone came to visit.

“Those are absolutely classic signs of acute trauma,” said Dr. Amy Cohen, a child psychiatrist. As a volunteer at an immigrant respite center in McAllen, Texas, Cohen identified and helped traumatized children and adults separated in detention.

There’s a good chance that whatever kompromat Russia has on these clowns, the IC has, too. If I were Devin Nunes I’d be losing sleep nowadays.

I don’t think it is directly tied to the Rod Rosenstein’s questioning last week…but overall the timing is good.

This OSU doctor sex abuse story broke right after the Michigan State trial for Larry Nasser. And it has been building since early spring.

Jim Jordan was part of the OSU wrestling team as assistant coach and apparently the investigators asked him what he knew about the doctors abuse and said he had never heard of anything going on and denied allegations from team members that said Jordan knew what was going on.

That heated everything up this week because there are some very respected members of Ohio State’s wrestling team that were close to Jordan and say he is lying his ass off.

If anything, Jordan’s grandstanding and his noxious politics may have encouraged others to call Jim Jordan out.

I hope like all get out as an Ohioan this kills Jordan’s career. But, in Trump world, many of Jordan’s constituents might call all of this more fake news.

This is the famous speech the President gave at the end of the movie Independence Day. Read it in the context of our country and the geopolitical situation today:

“Perhaps it’s fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation.

We’re fighting for our right to live. To exist.

And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive!

Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”

Fun trivia fact: The speech was filmed exactly 50 years to the day after the Hiroshima bombing, in front of a hangar that once housed the Enola Gay.

About the fireworks last night and pets - Scout usually has an IDNGAF attitude about fireworks, but our next door neighbors were setting them off and when the explosions were directly over our heads, Scout got a little spooked.

We gave him one of those CBD treats (my wife has dubbed them ‘Scooby snacks’), and within about 15 minutes he was back to his old, not-giving-a-fuck doggy self. I recommend them to anyone who has an anxious dog, they really do work.

“…Here are some of the options that the report discussed:

Conduct a study on the condition of the Addicks and Barker reservoirs to reduce uncertainty about their structural integrity.
Build a new reservoir in northwest Harris County to mitigate flooding in the Cypress Creek watershed. A current plan proposes a third reservoir to mitigate new development, but this reservoir would not reduce flooding from Buffalo Bayou or solve issues with the Addicks and Barker reservoirs.
Create a coordinated housing plan in conjunction with flexible buy-out programs.
Produce better regulations overseeing new development near floodplains.
Carry out a public information campaign to better educate Houstonians about flood-mitigation projects.
Build a consolidated, regional and public source of data about flooding.

I noticed that the NYT didn’t have comments enabled for that Trump-fluffing piece. Funny thing, that…

One can certainly feel sorry for these families’ losses - but that they are either letting their grief be exploited in the service of Trump’s bigoted xenophobic agenda (or worse, vigorously promoting said exploitation themselves) kinda diminishes the sympathy quotient just a bit.

Also, too: I think Vogel and Rogers are overstating these “angel families’” political influence to a marked degree. That even as The Orange Anus keeps blathering endlessly about “criminals” and “animals” and parading these folks around at his grotesque rallies, they have only been able to recruit “three dozen” families as props - one would think, given Trump’s rhetoric, that there would be thousands - leads me to think (PACs notwithstanding) that their actual impact may be a lot less than meets the eye.

“Many Russians tend to view diversity of European squads such as France, Germany, England, and Switzerland as a sign of the corresponding nations’ weakness and the erosion of traditional cultures,” Malamud said.

He said there’s a common perception in Russia: “Europe is dying under the hordes of invading barbarians.”

“It’s basically a part of the country’s official ideology,” he said.

And this is totally cool with the Republican Congressional delegation celebrating in Moscow.

Shelby is getting the business in his replies.

MrsJ has some of those.

Ours are past prime, now. The heat isn’t kind.

Same. Thy’re not lasting long this season. But there’s another whole line ready to go right behind these.

Besides the tiger lilies (which seem to do better in the heat), my wife bought the day lilies from a woman who is actually known as the ‘flower lady.’ She actually had to go to the woman’s house for an interview - if the flower lady doesn’t think you’re serious about growing them, no lilies for you.

That was 15 years ago! And we get this great pop of color every year. Another wise investment by my wife. Those flowers coming around every year make this place feel even more like our home.

I just saw a list of all the Republican Senators celebrating America’s freedom holiday in Russia.

A very interesting list. They all look like they are from some of the states Donny loves to do his rallies in. Hopefully the Democrats are working on some ad materials based on this group spending a day they should be with constituents spending a day with their real constituent.

The congressional delegation included Sens. Jerry Moran (R-KS), Steve Daines (R-MT), Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Kennedy (R-LA), John Thune (R-S.D.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.) and Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX)

Heh, a nice James O’Keefe-like video of someone interviewing Trump supporters in these states and asking them “do you know where you Senator is spending the 4th of July this year” would be fun.

I can see them giving some answers unaware of where they are and the videographer telling them they are all in Russia meeting with Vlad. The reactions would be pretty good. I bet a few of them would be in some pretty good throes of denial.

I saw no Border Patrol in the parade. (They usually are.) I could have missed them, I saw about 95% of the whole thing. Sooo many softball and Little League teams. Lots of political candidates. Both political parties, several churches, a couple political issues, left, right, and local. Opened with police and fire departments, lots of sirens. The John Deere tractor collection seemed a bit slower, and they’ve let another brand join them. Smokey the Bear with the forest service. Cheerleaders and dance teams.

Lots of clouds, so 10 degrees cooler than yesterday, and people sitting on both sides of the street, instead of all jammed on the shady side. Across the street from me were a guy I know and his parents. They’re Navajo, or as the Declaration of Independence refers to them, ‘merciless savages’. That’s a bit after the ‘all men are created equal’ part, which the founders and many followers don’t seem to have taken seriously.

Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I went and visited a brother in northern Ohio yesterday. Driving back to Columbus last evening, it was right as the sun was setting and a rainstorm had passed through the city when the most gorgeous full arc from end-to-end rainbow formed right above the highway. It had very distinct color bars, was vibrant and the foreground above was light blue and the background below was dark grey from the storm.

Really a once in a lifetime rainbow.

And right next to me on the seat of my car was my Nikon digital reflex camera and my new Samsung phone. But I was in the outside lane, it was still spitting rain and the road was busy at 65+ mph and I wasn’t going to risk trying to reach for anything and try and manage getting it in the proper position to shoot the rainbow directly above the car.

I was bummed. It would’a’ been a great shot.

But I still got to see it.

Rather than realize that pretty much nobody wants to migrate TO Russia.

That always was an issue, the “minority” nationalities who came to live in Russia at the same time as Russia was settling its people in the other Soviet states to strengthen their control (especially the Baltic states and Eastern Ukraine) and now let millions of them stranded outside Russia in the world’s largest diaspora.

And to think you could have bought ZIMA—limited edition re-issue. Saw it at the store yesterday and cringed.

My only question is why?

Before I was of legal drinking age, my friends and I made interesting alcoholic beverage choices. Among them was drinking Zima with packets of koolaid poured in.

,,, The US wants to examine re-examine “bad naturalization cases” to find U.S. citizens they say “should not have been naturalized, to revoke their citizenship, and then eventually deport them.” …

All of us, Katie. I’ve been saying for a while that anyone (for instance me, babe) can have their naturalization stripped. The form is, or at least was in my day, so ridiculous that it was essentially impossible to fill it out without making a false statement. List every organization of which you have ever been a member, for a start. I suppose the form may have improved but I doubt it.

On a lighter note, I did enjoy answering the question that went (IIRC, and I’m close): “Did you at any time between the years 1933 and 1945, inclusive, discriminate against anyone on grounds of race or religion?”

Why, no, I honestly replied, I wasn’t even born yet; and my daddy fought the Nazis anyway, though of course even he may now be regarded as a premature anti-fascist.

Final order yesterday from the judge in Chuck’s Twitter lawsuit - he’s been anti-SLAPPed and the case is dismissed. Case management conference next month, presumably to discuss how much he’s going to have to pay Twitter.

And he is NOT getting his Twitter account back.

I sure hope Chuckles can get that job as night-shift manager at Taco Bell. Sounds like he’s gonna need it.

So Sen. Elizabeth Warren spends the pre-Fourth holiday visiting US service personnel stationed abroad - while six of her GOP colleagues are off in Moscow hobnobbing with Russians for some reason*. And yet, I’m sure that it would still be taken as an article of faith by a non-trivial segment of the electorate that “Democrats hate the troops

* I’ve still not found the “official” reason for the Moscow Seven’s little junket. Anybody linkee??
