I hope we can avoid the kind of hagiography heâll be getting from the press. He was corrupt â check the Keating 5 scandal. He helped normalize the Republican Partyâs derangement when he anointed Palin. He sacrificed his long-standing opposition to torture to stay in the good graces of Bush and, perhaps, protect his upcoming nomination for the presidency.
He was still far from the worst Republican in Congress, he dropped that fuck-you thumbs-down that saved, at least for a while, the ACA, and he certainly didnât deserve to die of a rotten disease like cancer.

John McCain was a heroic serviceman, but he was a bad politician.
Then again, over 6 decades people do change, they get into situations that later turn different.
Hagiographies are to be expected at time of death. Itâs how we handle death.
In a few years there will be serious biographies turning up, and they will include both the good and the bad.

I dunno. Itâs the same message he has always. The others obviously took the time to write their statements. He obviously didnât.
My brother came down for dinner today and at one point said that sometimes he just wanted to get out of this whole part of the country. I said I understood, but what new was troubling him? Turns out heâd been golfing (heâs a hustler) with a fairly regular group of fish and one of them said that while he didnât agree with lots of things McCain did, he respected the man for his service. My brother could certainly agree with that but probably not from the same angle. Then another member of the foursome said, âWell, hell, both of those Arizona senators are so liberal, what do you expect?â This met with universal approval except from my bro, who kept his own counsel. This is where we live, a Twilight Zone in which politicians like McCain and Flake are wild-eyed liberals.
I wasnât fond of McCainâs politics for the most part, but I do remember that he was very much against torture and repeatedly said it did not work. I think he was probably the only Senator who had first hand experience with torture.

All true, but at the risk of a little levity on a night in which it might not be completely appropriate, I want to point out that fleecing is a finer art than simply grabbing every cent. Once I was a nonbetting fifth with a group of serious bettors including my bro. He hadnât missed a putt all day, but on the eighteenth, he pushed a birdie putt a foot right. While we were tossing our clubs into the car, I asked what the hell had gone wrong. He explained that if he made the putt, heâd win $1,200. Missing, he won only $900. But if heâd won the $1,200, these two particular fish probably wouldnât play him again for a couple of months. Whereas, losing only $900 (something psychological to do with the difference between three figures and four), theyâd be back in a week or two drooling for a chance to get their money back. And Iâm supposed to be the smarter sib.
Just got home and saw the news. Iâll light him a candle before mass tomorrow.

I see plenty of people across social media tonight posting the BS story about John McCain supposedly being the cause of the deadly fire aboard the USS Forrestal.
McCain had nothing to do with that fire. The US Navy quickly ascertained it was improper arming of an aircraft by enlisted aviation ordinancemen, which resulted in an unguided rocket to fire while the aircraft was on-deck, striking a fully fueled and armed aircraft ready to go on a mission.
In the subsequent explosion of that aircraft, its crew was immediately killed, along with a Chief Petty Officer who ran toward the aircraft with a fire bottle to put the fire out. Subsequent explosions of ordinance caused the fire to spread across much of the ship and many aircraft, killing many more and nearly causing the loss of the carrier.
While John McCain was stationed aboard the carrier at the time, he had nothing to do with the misfired Zuni rocket nor subsequent explosions.
I really get tired of that zombie lie about McCain.
The US Navy made a safety film about the fire, which at least when I was in every person in the Navy was required to watch. It deals with the initial rocket launch across the deck (which was captured on the shipâs plat camera, along with other footage showing personnel improperly handling the ordinance) and subsequent efforts both good and bad to contain the fire.
(18:44, with footage and description of the plat camera video and other information)

Thatâs why I threw is on here. You got deeper than I did.
The last two days Iâve been seeing adverts on almost every video on YouTube for an outfit called CRTV. They claim they are a news network which counters âanti-American propagandaâ (read news outlets and liberals).
You too can sign up for this fabulous service for the low price of $30 a month, which sounds like a conservative grift to me.
They have unbiased reporters such as Michelle Malkin, âDuck Commanderâ (Phil Robertson), Mark Levin (who owns it and is editor in chief), Gavin McInnes, Eric Bolling (who just joined), Steven Crowder, &c.
Amongst other things, they promote the idea that there is a âdeep stateâ of Obama-era holdovers, and they are responsible (as balanced news journalists) to root out this cabal to undermine Trump. (For example in one case, they accused a State Department worker of undermining Trump with retweets of articles critical of Trump, without mentioning the same worker retweeted articles which were positive about Trump).
It looks like Mark Levin is trying to bring competition to OANN.
I was not aware this outfit has been around since 2016, but their advert blitz in the last couple days seems to indicate they got an infusion of cash from somewhere.
Levin runs this as part of his magazine Conservative Review.

re: #163 Big Beautiful Door
Are you sure Mike Pence wouldnât count?
As someone else pointed out, a quorum is assumed unless a quorum call shows otherwise. The minute a Democratic Senator shows up to ask for a quorum call, theyâd have one and could voteâ50 to 1.
re: #163 Big Beautiful Door
Are you sure Mike Pence wouldnât count?
Good question. The only duty the Vice President has is President of the Senate and voting to break ties. He is a ceremonial member of the Senate.
âQuorum bustingâ has been used in the past (not showing up for votes, or leaving DC). This tactic has also been used in state senates (Wisconsin is famous for it).
As such, the US Senate has rules to prevent this.
In 1877, in response to proliferating filibusters that employed tactics designed to keep the Senate from attaining the 51 percent quorum needed to conduct business, the body amended its rules to allow the sergeant at arms, upon receiving Senate orders, to arrest members.
But what happened if senators, sitting in the chamber, responded to a quorum call and then refused to vote on the legislation before them? During a major filibuster in October 1893, senators demanded the yeas and nays for a vote, but then remained silent when the clerk called their names. The presiding officer announced that the necessary majority had not voted, even though there were enough senators in the chamber to make a quorum. When that officer again ordered the clerk to call the roll to determine if a quorum was present, a majority of members answered. But when the roll-call on the pending measure was then taken, the filibusterers declined to vote. In one frustrating forty-hour-long session, this tactic produced thirty-nine quorum calls, but only four votes.
Four years later, in 1897, the Senate agreed to a procedure that basically ended this delaying game. This prompted a return to the tactic staying away from the chamber.
Over the following decades, the Senate occasionally directed its sergeant at arms to arrest members. But the first openly physical act of compulsion did not occur until 1988. On February 24, 1988, in an attempt to establish a quorum on a campaign finance reform bill, Capitol police carried Oregon Republican Senator Robert Packwood into the chamber feet first at 1:17 a.m.
More on quorum busting at the US Senate Website:
On quorum busting, I have no doubt that Mitch McConnell would order the arrest of Democratic members of the Senate to force them into the chamber (as was done with Bob Packwood in the example above). I also have no doubt McConnell would particularly enjoy having that order issued to the Capitol Police, and then use that as proof of Democratic obstruction in advertising for the upcoming election.

McCain drove me batty with his on-again/off-again maverickyness, and the fact that he gave Sarah Palin a national platform. But I always respected his service. Now, Iâm thinking about how so many folks, on the left and the right, are so saddened by his passing. And I think about how when Trump dies, there will be nothing even remotely like this outpouring of love and respect.
This is because the sum total of Trumpâs existence has been how much he can use other people for his own personal gain. Trumpâs followers also follow a similar vein- how much they can use Trump (or any other political hack) to advance their own racist/tribal agenda. They donât care who does it, or how itâs done. They simply want their White supremacy at any cost and care nothing about whomever provides it for them in the end.

Eventually the gigs will slow down. Shapiroâs will too when the people bankrolling him realize no one gives a shit what his Backpfeifengesicht says.
Itâs like social media influencers: youâve got a crowd of noisy idiots doing all sorts of stupid stunts to get a paid gig as a celebrity on some network sucking on venture capital fumes. It would just be pathetic if they werenât all soulless sociopaths.
This is the thing about Overtonâs window, too. Yes, you can push people to an extreme viewpoint by constantly moving the media in that direction, but it only works on the people who are still paying attention. So youâve now got a minority of whack jobs who have talked themselves into a crazy state and who will do insane things, but the rest of the world is just goggling at these people like theyâve lost their minds. Which they have.

Some important implications of McCainâs death. One, once Ducey selects a replacement, almost certainly a solid establishment Republican, the slight hopes of preventing the confirmation of Kavanaugh vanish, barring some unforeseen, extremely negative disclosure. Second, if the GOP can expand its Senate majority just slightly, say to 52 seats, they can make another run at repealing Obamacare, with a heightened likelihood of success, since there are only two reliable no votes.

re: #302 Targetpractice
As the thread above noted, Miloâs fall from grace really accelerated the moment that he was banned from Twitter. That serves to reinforce the argument that the way to deal with hate and bigotry is to deprive it of a platform, rather than giving it greater exposure in order to âdebateâ with it as though it were a legitimate argument deserving of public discussion.
Greshamâs law (from the 19th century) states that bad money drives out good. That is even more true of speech. Giving dishonesty and lies an equal platform to truth diminishes truth and allows lies to flourish. What always troubles me about debates is that the clever, more eloquent speaker usually wins, despite the merits of their argument. That is even truer in a public forum where the audience usually doesnât know the actual facts and can easily be swayed by style over substance.
When someone makes bold-faced lies, itâs hard to refute unless you have all the true details at your finger-tips and can cite a reputable source that conclusively refutes their assertions, especially when they donât have to present documented evidence to support their statements.

Even if you have all the details at your fingertips, even if you have the power to stop time while you perfectly craft a refutation in as few words as possible⊠it will still take a full 2 sentences to disprove a 6 word lie. Thereâs no catching up. Ever.

John McCain was a very flawed but great man, whose courage can be matched by few of the other current members of the House or Senate. He was truly loyal to this nation, a statement that does not appear to apply to the other GOP members of the Senate, though Flake occasionally shows a spark of âconcernâ.

Denis Leary has remained relevant, if not necessarily a comedy giant.
I think an important part of being an edgy comic (or an edgy musician or writer or what-have-you) is having the wisdom to know that itâs hard to stay on the edge â those who do are either extremely good and remarkably fortunate. And if you canât stay on the edge, itâs good to be able to transform yourself to keep afloat.
