I’ve been following the case for a while. They are being heartless.

The man and woman in question adopted her when she was a small child. What they didn’t know was adoption does not make a child an American citizen (much like marriage doesn’t). Under the law, the parents have to apply for citizenship for their child.

The daughter also didn’t know diddly about this as she grew up.

What they are trying to do now is claim she is an “illegal immigrant” and deport her to South Korea, to a nation where she has no family that she can identify, doesn’t know the culture, and doesn’t speak the language.

The whole thing stinks of hatred for foreigners, and they really don’t give a crap who they hurt to get their hate on.

Incidentally, it also shows how much conservatives actually care about military and veteran families (that is, not at all, just as patriotic props).

There is something terribly wrong with the people who support Trump — and terribly evil about this whole administration. November is our last chance to put a brake on the process of sliding into tyranny — and if we fail then, I don’t see what can rescue us, especially given that much of the so-called developed world seems to be experiencing similar toxic reactions.

And a few weeks from now, if ATF or the FBI or the Allentown Police make a case it was a disgruntled employee, someone trying to kill their girlfriend, a sovereign citizen chowderhead, or whatever, said right wing media will immediately forget it ever happened. On the other hand, what they put out will become part of Wingnut Scripture (the Muslim Brotherhood in cahoots with Killary Clinton and George Soros was trying to kill real ‘Muricans to start the Deep State overthrow of the nation - because if I was going to do it I would start by attacking Allentown, see).

I am not sure you are talking about the story that is linked. She was brought over at 15 by her aunt and uncle(who are now her adoptive parents). Her biological parents are still in South Korea and if she was there until she was 15 I am pretty sure she knows the language. Also adoption does impart citizenship as long as it occurs before the child is 16 and they did not complete the adoption until she was 17.

This is still a horrible story, but not the one you are telling.

The evil of sexual predators is that they attack the weak, make them weaker, then discredit them because of their weakness. These arrogant monsters go on to bigger and better things, leaving a collection of wounded people in their wake. But these victims, one by one, are coming forward anyway — well aware that they’ll be mocked and disbelieved, well aware that some will scrutinize their lives more harshly than their predators’.

Actually, if we take the House, there is enough for impeachment (only a majority is needed) — but certainly not enough for conviction — unless at least 16 Republicans have an epiphany and care about this country.

OT

Tomorrow morning Mrs. C and I are becoming snowbirds. We’re putting the motor-home on the ferry headed to Prince Rupert, BC. Thence south thru BC, WA, and stopping in southern Oregon so my wife can have cataract surgery. Once that’s over we’ll be heading south to AZ and then eastward. After a stop in TX to see relatives, our hopes are to make it to central FL (the Villages) to see my sisters. None of us are getting any younger.

On the return trip we will be stopping in southern OR again so my wife can have cataract surgery in her other eye. We’re traveling for surgery because the only ophthalmologist in SE Alaska retired back in January and no one has come forward to purchase the practice. Just one of those things that can happen in an isolated city.

I did buy an ATT MiFi unit so I will be able to follow all your adventures and to share ours. Definitely will be here on election night for the great LGF coverage. We have made arrangement to get our absentee ballots. (Got to get rid of Don Young)

Keep up the good fight. I can now see a flicker of light at the end of a long tunnel.

When we lived in Laramie we made many trips thru the panhandle of Nebraska. Many trips to Cabela’s, and several trips to the east coast.

So, as far as the panhandle is concerned, been there, done that. This trip across the southern US is virgin territory for us.

Time for the monthly liberal letter to the Star-Herald, whether they need one or not:

Lisa Benson’s September 30 political cartoon is disgusting.

I challenge whichever editor at the Star-Herald who approved this to ask the women in (I assume his) family to ask the women employees of the Star-Herald how many have been groped, assaulted, or raped, and why they didn’t report it.

This cartoon comes close to slander against Dr. Ford and her testimony before Congress. By the way, all the hysterical outbursts were from Judge Cavanaugh and Republican senators.

Of course you can’t have evidence if you are closed to looking for it. One might ask Judge Kavanaugh if he would accept a case in his court where over ninety percent of the documents about the case were withheld.

I don’t know how the whole Kavanaugh is playing out around this country. I’m just too isolated from the masses to get a feel.

However, on Facebook, there appears to be a few who might at times want to be labeled as “conservative” who seem kind of upset at what is going on.

But it’s going to take a whole lot of self-inflicted wounds by Republicans before their inherently, wealth-established, power brokers give up on them completely.

I think (hope? fear?) the last two weeks, and maybe next week, will be seen as a watershed. Either they’re going to have to legally establish (which they can with Kavanaugh on the SC) a Handmaid’s Tale-type society, or things are going to change—radically.

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest Trump asinine tweet or one of his video tantrums.

Yet it strikes me that this is all very well with the establishment Republicans because, like with their tax-gift to the rich, it serves them for the masses to be distracted.

Take for example our never ending war. Currently in Afghanistan and Iraq, we are in an open ended military engagement. And some want to expand that to Syria.

Now America has usually been at war (even if it was not declared as such formally), contra the claims of Mitt Romney. Our history is not one of a peace-loving state (contra again to much of Americana-mythology.)

So in the budgets the GOP just sends more money to their war-bosses and Trump is happy to sign the bill.

Now some may take exception to the following, but the DoD is as much of a jobs-project as anything the DoT might undertake.

We’ve made the art-of-killing a rather large part of our economy.

But how many of our political discussions get around to this?

It’s proper to be outraged at the Kavanaugh circus, but remember that circuses are meant to entertain. We are being distracted from important social and political issues that need addressing.

The atavism that put Trump and his allies (even if they are not his friends) in power is sticky. As the old saying goes (creatively), you really can fool some of the people all the time.

Remember when you used to hear about this or that trouble somewhere in the world that otherwise is not America or a major nation?

Not anymore. We are consumed with fighting off the latest whining from the crier in the White House.

Xenophobia is about looking inwards and demonizing the outside.

While you may reject the Trumpers’ xenophobia, by the very consumption of Trump’s madness we have stopped looking at the outside. We are now totally consumed with our own inadequacies.

Trump’s goal was to undo most of the 20th century, and like it or not, he’s having some success at it.

But, there’s still going to be damage done even if we take both chambers. We won’t have much of a majority in either, not enough for impeachment. All we can do at that point is make it obvious.

I think there’d be enough for impeachment - that’s simple majority in the HoR - but not enough for removal in the Senate (2/3rds, or 67 votes).

re: #83 freetoken

When the world looked around after World War 2, the only major power that was not smashed into rubble was the United States. At that moment, we were effectively an empire (even if we didn’t call ourselves such).

The Soviet Union and its allies tried hard to compete against the USA, but the USSR was hamstrung by its own damage from WW2, smothering bureaucracy, lack of first-rate technology, a whole host of problems.

The only way to maintain an empire is through military force (or its threat). Every empire in history has done that, and when the empire is either no longer willing or unable to exert military force, the empire passes away.

WW1 saw the destruction of the German and Ottoman Empires. WW2 saw the destruction of the Japanese Empire (and Britain gave up its empire, and other nations gave up their colonies). The USA stepped into the vacuum to create a new empire built primarily on trade, but backed by a powerful military.

Whether the next war is fought on an actual battlefield, in cyberspace, or something else, the USA will either be defending an empire or ceding to the next one.

The neocon dream of the 90’s was that brief moment directly after the collapse of the USSR and before the rise of China as a global economic power when they saw the fata morgana of an opportunity to turn the American Century into the American Millennium and consolidate our power once and for all.

We are still living with the consequences of those failed decisions.

Yup.

While the enemies of an empire generally have to put up with warfare and political meddling, usually within a stable empire things are quite peaceable (as defined by its laws). It’s when the empire starts to break up that things get violent within the empire.

The United Kingdom seems to be the only empire I can think of where the core countries did not break out into violence when they gave up their empire. (That is not true of their former colonies though.)

Yes, the concept of “empire” still fits, though I think that talking-point is overdone.

I was thinking of more immediate human impacts.

There is a steady stream of young people who either die, or are wounded or traumatized, the numbers of which are accumulating. Though there have not been many deaths on the battlefield lately, when they do happen it seems to be in small groups.

Part of the problem is the fetishizing of the military among certain slices of the American society.

To these people any critique of America’s wars or the military is equivalent to attacking some idealized America, idealized as some sort of agent-of-God.

This is a pernicious problem that popped up in the middle of the 20th century after WWII and came to a surface during Vietnam, then was re-ignited in our “war on terror”.

It’s as if some people don’t realize that the purpose of a nation-state does not have to be war.

Sarah Palin’s Son Just Got Arrested For Assaulting A Woman. Again.
How will she manage to blame Obama for this one?
(Goes to Wonkette)

Aren’t their fifteen minutes up about a decade ago? Thanks, McCain Obama.

All this week, Sarah Palin has been very active on Twitter, fiercely defending Brett Kavanaugh, a man accused of violently assaulting a woman. She has had many, many words for how badly she feels for him, and all other conservatives “falsely accused” of “anything.”

However, while she may have spent her week defending a man accused of assaulting a woman, her son has spent at least part of his… assaulting a woman. Track Palin was arrested for domestic violence against a woman at his residence on Friday night. This is far from the first time this has happened. Palin was arrested in 2016 for punching his girlfriend in the face, his ex-wife has accused him of being both physically and verbally abusive, and he’s also been arrested for assaulting his own father.

Palin is being charged with fourth-degree domestic violence, interfering with the reporting of a domestic violence crime, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

However, given his behavior after the death of his boyfriend John McCain, the pinnacle of which was his SUPER SAYIAN MODE at yesterday’s Kavanaugh witch trial, I believe that he may simply be a person who became a homosexual after having been abused as a child and entered into an abusive homosexual relationship with the much older homosexual communist and ISIS-supporter John McCain.

won’t matter. we’ll control committees. you don’t think a real, robust House committee wouldn’t have roaches fleeing for their professional lives? And at that point, Republicans in the senate will either join in or be annihilated. Remember, 2020 is a year when a huge number of them are up for reelection.

I think we need to take as many seats as we can, and that it will be better if we control at least one chamber, if not both. Just don’t expect the administration to suddenly get self-control because of it.

I’m going to say this again, in case anyone missed it before:

If you know a survivor of sexual assault or rape, there’s a good chance they’re struggling right now. Check in on them, with extra love and consideration. Ask them out for dinner or coffee or bring dinner to them. Let them know they matter to you, you don’t have to bring up their experience, just be a little extra attentive.

And if someone you know has cut off contact or is withdrawn and hurting, just let them know they have a friend and a safe place with you. You have no idea how much this stuff means. I’m sailing these seas alone and it sucks. So reach out. They may not respond initially or ever, but at least they know.

Scalia always seemed very results oriented to me. It was obvious when he’d change his jurisprudence to fit the result he wanted (for what it’s worth, Thomas at least remains consistent with his jurisprudence and that’s why he would split from Scalia more often than people realized). I don’t think Kavanaugh will have the influence that Scalia had because Scalia had a unique talent for writing opinions that could galvanize.

I’m with you but I think Lupin meant “autistic mode” as a shorthand for mentally walled off, in the same way Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex used the terminology “cyberbrain autistic mode” to denote a cyberbrain user who had turned off their wireless networking connections. It’s a tone deaf term that hasn’t aged particularly well, but I don’t think it was intended as an insult.

His past rulings should be scrutinized too. He’s shown who he is, and kicked open the door himself.

According to Wikipedia, 13 of his opinions have been challenged in the Supreme Court and he’s been upheld 12 times. But there also appears to be a lot of cases where he wrote in dissent and his position wasn’t adopted by the Supreme Court. The irony is he was supposed to be the mainstream pick. I don’t think he’s a judicial extremist, I think he’s someone who cares about what the GOP wants more. To use the umpire analogy that is now so popular. As a former baseball player, I much rather would have a consistently bad umpire with something of a code than someone who may call my pitches balls in one location but may give that strike to Clayton Kershaw. Granted Clayton’s a much better pitcher than I’ll ever be but I think this works.

They promised me rain.

At least for Tuesday.

Previously, because of hurricane Rosa, the idea was that we could get up to an inch of rain early in the week.

Then the estimated amount was dropped to about a half an inch.

Now we’ll be lucky to get a quarter of an inch.

The problem is that Rosa is turning east too soon.

If you’re in the Rockies hoping for snow you’ll get your wish.

But here we need rain. The past few years have been very dry.

Even when they agreed, their arguments could be very different. In their dissents to the 2003 Lawrence vs Texas decision, Thomas seemed very level-headed and thoughtful, while Scalia penned a screed that would be worthy of Kavanaugh.

Scalia always let his own opinions and feelings about morality show in his opinions. And you know what, I don’t necessarily mind that but when you’re used as the model judge for “independent” and only using the Constitution as your map, you don’t deserve the reputation he got and the way he was consistently used as the model justice in his lifetime.

Right but it’s not even that. Autism as AnonMom just said is neurological. It’s not about lack of character of intelligence. We’re just wired differently.

It’s also important to understand that most of us middle aged and older folks didn’t get much cultural exposure to autism or even the idea of the spectrum growing up. I’d read Donna Williams’ books Nobody Nowhere and Somebody Somewhere before Rain Man came out, but those experiences formed my only real conception of autism until I worked with a database analyst with what was then called Asperger’s. So without excusing it we should also realize that we’re dealing with a subject of rapidly evolving popular mindshare and understanding.

That’s very true. Thomas believes in deferring to the legislature a lot more than I find appropriate, but I’m also somewhat outside the mainstream of judicial philosophy in that I think the courts can and should use the Ninth Amendment to identify and recognize unenumerated constitutional rights rather than the gymnastics they have to go through on equal protection and due process grounds

Why we have sportsball?

This is what happens to father’s hormone levels when they watch their kids play football

[…]

Anthropologist Louis Alvarado at the University at Albany and his colleagues, including the psychologists Melissa Eaton and Melissa Thompson at the University of New Mexico, found that the fathers’ testosterone and cortisol levels increased after the experience of watching the games (by 81 per cent and 417 per cent, respectively). These changes weren’t linked to the outcomes of the games, but were to an extent explained by whether or not the fathers believed that the referee had acted unfairly towards their child’s team - if they did perceive unfairness, the fathers’ post-match cortisol and testosterone tended to be higher (fathers with higher pre-match testosterone were also more likely to perceive unfairness).

Except the threat was more emotional, based more on perceived fairness than whether or not their kid lost or actually got hurt. Also:

(fathers with higher pre-match testosterone were also more likely to perceive unfairness)

and

Other findings to come out of the study were that fathers watching their sons showed greater testosterone rises than fathers watching their daughters, as did fathers who felt sports were less important to their child (this latter result was opposite to expectations, and the researchers speculated that it was perhaps connected to the fathers’ frustration or disappointment that their child was not taking the competition seriously enough).

… leads credence to the conclusion that the perceived threat was to the father’s own status, and was actually hormonally triggered instead of triggering the hormonal response.

re: #87 Anymouse 🌹

When the world looked around after World War 2, the only major power that was not smashed into rubble was the United States. At that moment, we were effectively an empire (even if we didn’t call ourselves such).

Actually, that’s similar to what Immanuel Wallerstein has been saying for ages, albiet from a more geopolitical sense: that the US has been an empire (He uses the term “hegemon”.) since the end of WW2.

However, the difference is: he’s been arguing since I don’t know when- I first came across his work in the early 2000s- that the US actually lost it’s hegemony at the start of the 1970s, and has since been fighting a rear-guard action to mitigate the effects of this, and the most effective Presidents have been the ones that mitigate the effects well, and the Presidents that fight against mitigating the effects are in fact accelerating the decline of the US’s geopolitical power.

He’s also arguing that capitalism, as it is, is reaching its limits, and is becoming increasingly unstable.

I don’t always agree with what he says, but I find his bi-monthly commentaries are definitely an interesting read.

Here in west-central Illinois, we have been dry for several years.
