Angry Mob Tosses Ukrainian Politician Into the Trash
One of Kiev’s prominent politicians is full of rubbish — or rather, the rubbish is full of him. Vitaly Zhuravsky, once a member of former President Viktor Yanukovich’s Party of the Regions and now a member of the Economic Development Party, came face-to-face with an angry mob outside Ukraine’s parliament.
Having a history of authorizing bills placing restrictions on anti-government protests and criminalizing libel did not appear to play well in his favor. Protesters, shouting profanities, tossed the neatly dressed lawmaker into a trash can, dousing him with water and clocking him with a tire. Zhuravsky was ultimately able to crawl out of the bin and escape the mob.

at the time of voting it was merely…annoying
i didnt think “omg this is gonna confuse a lot of people”
this was my first presidential election in florida
my history was NY with the curtained voting machines and the levers
i just assumed it was the same everywhere
so i walk into..wherever and vote in this cubicle then get in line and place the ballot in a box with a padlock on it
i walked outside and called my brother, still in NY and said voting down here is like a banana republic but without the armed guards watching.
then everything went haywire with the counting, hanging chads, bush v gore, etc

I used to live in Malibu back in the Neolithic Era day, and while it was certainly scenic, beautiful and California-rustic; it was also, for a community perched on the edge of one of the most over-developed urban region in the country, remarkably inaccessible in any sort of “emergency” - fires, floods, landslides, etc..
Good luck to the folks there.
I just lodged a complaint with the county attorney (R) and the village board over the results of the village board election. The official results still have not been posted to any media outlet or on the Secretary of State Website.
Unofficially, I lost by two votes according to the county clerk over the telephone, prior to the canvassing board meeting. There were eighteen provisional ballots for that board to consider, along with the regular mail ballots turned in.
The village board meeting is Monday and I still don’t know whether I am a village trustee or not.

Are they afraid of telling you, since they may like you for your service and they just can’t bring themselves to bring the bad news?
The gun shop owner just came by my house. He says that not all the write-in votes were for my neo-Nazi adjacent neighbour, and not to give up hope.
He says half a dozen write-in votes were for him (asking other people in town), and as he had not registered as a write-in candidate, they would be invalid votes. Additionally, even if they were valid votes, he does not want to serve on the village board and would refuse.
If that’s really the case (six votes went to him), then I would have won reëlection by four votes instead of lost by two.
This whole process is ridiculous.

I have no idea. The county clerk (R) doesn’t live in my town but knows me from interactions at the county offices. The rest of the village board is in the dark about the election as I am.
My wife was talking with the gun shop owner … he just left. He said again on the way out that he thinks I actually won the election (but he’s not the guy who counts the votes, so we’ll see).

Writing in the Nazi is more troubling.
Minnesota would look pretty freaking good to me.
My wife also said when that guy was canvassing, he went over to the gun shop owner’s house to seek his vote. He said “I ran him off pretty rudely.”
Knowing him, rudely could have been anything from a loud string of invective to the business end of a shotgun.

I think the “remarkably inaccessible” is partly intentional. Sort of like the mostly well kept secret that is the South Bay. It’s amazing what “20 minutes from the freeway” can mean in Southern California.

McConnell’s refusal to provide specific protection to allow Mueller to complete his work shows he puts party over nation. He doesn’t care about the Constitution or the rule of law. In a sane world, the answer would be simple:
This sort of legislation isn’t necessary, because if the president attempts to obstruct justice or otherwise shuts down the investigation, that would be an impeachable offense, and I have full faith that the Senate would convict any president who so blatantly violated the law and his constitutional duty.
But we don’t live in a sane world, instead we have these jackasses in charge.

White House trade advisor Navarro says China trade deal will be on Trump’s terms, not Wall Street’s (CNBC)
I’m sure that will make industry in the USA feel better about Trump’s ongoing nonsense about trade. This is wingnut economic advisor Peter Navarro, part of Trump’s anti-free trade advisors. (His pro-free trade advisors have already left the administration.)
White House trade advisor Peter Navarro said Friday that any new trade agreement between the United States and China will be on President Donald Trump’s terms, not Wall Street’s.
“If there is a deal — if and when there is a deal, it will be on President Donald J. Trump’s terms. Not Wall Street terms,” Navarro said from the Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington, D.C.
“If Wall Street is involved and continues to insinuate itself into these negotiations, there will be a stench around any deal that’s consummated because it will have the imprimatur of Goldman Sachs and Wall Street,” he added.

Yep, it’s here and the sooner we recognize it the better. As far as fighting back is concerned, we have to be smart about it, particularly in identifying, and drawing attention to, the real enemy. For instance, why did those idiots in DC go after Fuck-head Carlson’s wife rather than the Faux News offices? I have condemned that action, but I would have no problem with similar demonstrations at fascist centers like Liberty University or NRA headquarters. A caveat: Confronting these brutal feudalists in their own lair could be extremely dangerous. It is imperative that we do not start the shooting though, and that increases the risk. Fighting for democracy has always been risky and if you can’t accept that, stay at home.
Shot.

Wow
Signature matching…
Yeah, ever try to sign something - anything really - and realize after you signed it, that it’s different than something you signed previously?
Try signing your name 10 times. Think they’re all identical?
Now, try signing something the way you did a year ago.
This is why signature matching is such a problem - what is the standard of proof? We have documentation about how someone may sign something.
What if you’re dealing with someone who had a brain injury or hand injury and they no longer sign something the same way. What then? We toss out their legitimate vote because someone said that they’re not a legit match?
But the GOP wants to throw out votes because they might not help their cause of staying in power.
This disproportionately affects areas with higher populations because they’re the ones that typically vote for Democrats, but it affects all voters regardless of party affiliation.
Your vote will not count if they screw you on a signature match issue.

Ugh. I mentioned before, Canova was one of my law professors. From the Secular Coalition for America, notes on exit polls after the election:
• Secular voters showed up! Exit poll data indicates that turnout among nonreligious voters was up two points from the 2016 election and up five points from the 2014 midterms. In total, nonreligious voters accounted for 17% of the electorate on Tuesday.
• Evangelicals overperformed. White evangelical christians make up only 15% of the population, but comprised more than one-quarter (26%) of the midterm electorate. Their outsized influence is due, at least in part, to the massive sums of money they spend on their get-out-the-vote initiatives.

From the Arizona Republic’s story, second paragraph:
The lawsuit, which cites no evidence for the claim, was filed by Alice Novoa on Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court. Terán has a U.S. birth certificate, according to court records from a similar lawsuit that Novoa filed against her in 2012.
That seems pretty open and shut. It was the same guy who filed last time. He should be heavily sanctioned, and possibly sued for abuse of process.

“…In a fiery press conference outside the Governor’s Mansion, Scott blamed “unethical liberals” for swinging the election results in their favor and said he was asking FDLE to investigate the two elections officials.

Sen. Bill Nelson: “Votes are not being found; they’re being counted. We will continue to ensure that this election is conducted fairly, the rule of law is followed, and the democratic process is fulfilled.”
what’s happening here in slow motion is what i said the night before the election
- there is no horse race in counting votes
- every ballot matters
- there is no order or sequence to the announced progress of vote totals
- until each and every one is found (yes things do get mislaid), verified, and processed, the partial totals, “leaders” and lead changes are meaningless
- there are a finite number of ballots
- and yes there is an error rate / margin of error
- and yes sometimes (more and more) the margin of victory is smaller than the margin of error
- and still there are a finite number of ballots
- the simple arithmetic (not math) is 1+1+1+…+1 until they are all done
-ALL this posturing is an attempt to game the system and change that result

Federalist Lady Says No MAGA Pussy Hat Marches Over Losing The House, Because Wingnuts Are CLASSY
One of the most adorable narratives they’ve tried to The Secret into being lately is the one about how they handle political disappointment normally and non-violently, whereas the left is “unhinged” and full of violent mobs who care about nothing other than cruelly ruining Ted Cruz’s dinner plans. As such, Inez Feltscher Stepman of The Federalist has compiled a very smug top ten list of things we won’t see Republicans doing after losing the House, because of how classy they are.
Spoiler alert: This does not include not threatening a violent overthrow of the government should anyone try to impeach Trump, which has already occurred.

When things were particularly bad between President Trump and Jeff Sessions, the attorney general’s chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, would attend White House meetings in his place. Sessions didn’t know Whitaker at the same time was angling for a promotion
So sessions is a clueless moran

Yep, Sessions strikes me as the type of guy who pays for his wife’s tennis coach to go along on vacation with them.
Steve Scalice on MSNBC just pointed out that there’s actually 7 counties in Florida that haven’t reported vote totals (4 have gone to Scott), and the preliminary votes aren’t due until tomorrow

Connie Schultz on Michelle Obama’s new book (love both of them and both of their husbands):
“Becoming” is a political spouse’s memoir like no other, and I say that as the author of one. Obama doesn’t waste time naming every person who helped to elect her husband. This is her book, not his. She also cites, by name and deed, some of those who offended her. This is not an act of revenge but rather a clear sign that she is unwilling to pretend none of that mattered. Good for her.

You’re wasting your time. As a capital-N Narcissist, he is literally, neurologically incapable of feeling shame or empathy. You might as well ask a dog for an opinion on literature.
There’s no “there” there with Moscow Donnie. We quite truly have a country controlled by someone who is deeply, permanently damaged and should be sequestered away from power and influence the same way you would a serial killer or a sex offender.
If you want to hurt him, take away his attention and prestige, and find a way to remind him every minute that everyone sees through him.
Exile him to Saint Helena and make sure the only TV channel he gets there plays this season’s SNL cold openings on repeat.

IIRC, Kyl was wavering about whether or not he’d serve out the rest of McCain’s term (he’d have to run in the special election in two years anyway) - so Martha may still get a ticket to DC after all.

Of course Trump is incapable of empathy. My version of karma doesn’t make that assumption. If Trump is disabled, broke and alone, he will not be getting any of that filthy hate-crowd energy he feeds on.
If he’s put into a facility run according to Republican budgeting principles and ends up hip-deep in his own shit, so much the better.
