If Sassy doesn’t get his wall, he’s not playing anymore. “All Trump’s Words”
About the National Guard’s origins, according to wikipedia:
Local militias were formed from the earliest English colonization of the Americas in 1607. The first colony-wide militia was formed by Massachusetts in 1636 by merging small older local units, and several National Guard units can be traced back to this militia. The various colonial militias became state militias when the United States became independent. The title “National Guard” was used in 1824 by some New York State militia units, named after the French National Guard in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette. “National Guard” became a standard nationwide militia title in 1903, and specifically indicated reserve forces under mixed state and federal control since 1933.

Last night, on Maddow, the news coming out of the Trump shirts how was described as a telenovela that we all have to live through.
I disagree. Even the hack writers on telenovelas wouldn’t dare this level of absurdity.

With that as the roadmap, they set out to interdict the GOP’s base of influence upstream.

Yeah, that’s Anna Chapman… and she was one the more recent honeypots to try and coopt Americans in key areas of the society to further Russia’s agenda.

re: #5 Mike Lamb
Re: Trump’s ludicrous explanation…bottom line is that of they believed everything was kosher, they wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to hide the payments. Period.
It’s a Catch-22 for them. They didn’t want anyone to know about the payments, so they hid everything. Because they knew if the payments were disclosed, reporters would investigate and everything would come out. Which was the opposite of what they wanted to happen, so the only way to hide the story is to also hide the payments. But to knowingly hide the payments is (apparently) a criminal violation of campaign finance law. Compared to the more typical civil violations of campaign finance law where a campaign unintentionally miscategorizes a payment of some sort and later has to change it; or unintentionally authorizes a payment that isn’t allowed under the law.
The big difference here is “knowingly” vs “unknowingly”.

Trump’s actions by and through Cohen (and Trump Org) went several steps further, by creating shell companies, creating phony invoices, and sending payments back and forth to try and claim that these were regular business costs, and not payments to silence those Trump had affairs with. He turned this into a huge money laundering operation because he was repeatedly having affairs with women while married.
That also raises tax implications too, as these business entities had to file tax returns. That’s felony conduct too. And here’s where things get squirrely for Trump. There’s no statute of limitations on tax fraud. The IRS and NYS Division of Tax and Finance (and NYC for that matter) can all go after Trump Org and Trump personally for this.

There was a Daily Beast article yesterday, “With Cohen Going to Prison, Trump’s Companies and Campaign Could Be Indicted Next” that says that even if the Justice Department won’t indict a sitting president, there’s nothing about indicting his company.
Trump is never going to be impeached over hiding payments to conceal his affairs, regardless of their legality. The question is why did Trump think those people who would allow him to shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue would somehow object to a known libertine having affairs. Maybe he realized that to win he needed to attract voters outside his base or perhaps he overestimated the character of the evangelicals and thought that this behavior would dissuade them from voting.

Trump Org is in dire straits due to fact their CFO took an immunity deal. That means SDNY isn’t looking to get anyone lower than members of the board (aka Trump family members). You don’t give a deal to the CFO in effort to get someone lower than the CFO. You are seeking those above the CFO - and that means Junior and Eric (and Trump himself). Ivanka too since these crimes occurred before she supposedly separated from Trump Org.

I’m of the mind that that’s the quickest way to impeachment for Trump: pardoning he’s kids as soon as they’re indicted. I still feel like that would be a red line for a lot of Republicans - Trump blatantly abusing the power of his office to save his kids/business. Especially because I can gaurandamntee that he won’t wait for the normal DOJ process, he’ll be writing them out on napkins if he has to.

My sense is that this got its start in the aftermath of Citizens United and the Russians realized they could use these kinds of entities to spread money and their influence in ways that could avoid easy scrutiny.

Texas is part of America, regardless of what they want to do to their people - they imprison someone for 6 years for incorrect voting - while the feds want to give someone 6 months for being a russian spy. Not so many years ago the latter was a death penalty crime.
Again — states are given a lot of leeway in terms of their laws, unless overturned by the Supreme Court (Loving vs State of Virginia) or overturned by specific federal laws. Obama’s hands were tied starting in 2010, courtesy of the GOP takeover of the House and then further tied by Mitch McConnell when he no longer had 60 votes in the Senate. Wasn’t the death penalty typically applied to traitors, not actual spies?

The terrorist was a domestic homegrown extremist who radicalized inside France. Borders wouldn’t stop him. Fences and walls wouldn’t prevent it.
Trump thinks that this is another justification for his boondoggle wall, when the DHS and law enforcement considers the threat of terrorism via Mexico to be low. The much greater threat is from Canada or those flying into the US on visas (and which has been well documented).
Trump spending billions on a wall that wont stop terrorism, let alone drug use, or other crime. He’s directed law enforcement to ignore homegrown right wing domestic terrorism, which is the biggest threat the nation faces and instead treats nonwhites as the biggest threat of all time.

FTFY
Nike Confessore of the NY Times on Nicole’s Deadline Washington is talking about how deep Trump’s illegal money handling is going to go once they put it all together.
He was talking about one area he and others are looking at are the donations to the Trump inauguration fund. They raised twice the money Obama raised and we all saw little was spent on the actual inauguration.
He said a look at the donor list shows corporate groups representing things like insurance companies, big pharmaceutical businesses, prison administration, etc.
Rick Stengel (former Time mag head, etc.) said that isn’t new, happens every four years. But what he and Confessore seem to be seeing is it looks like pay for play and Trump just did what he wanted to do with the money. Ane he is paying them all back with favor…like messing with the ACA and all the “holding centers” (prisons) for the people crossing the southern border.
When this all wrapped up, they will have trouble finding anything Trump did that was legal.

Here’s how I expect the next week will go:
1) House and Senate GOP leaders will try to fashion up funding bills that include the $5B for Donny’s vanity project, with one or the other saying “This is the only bill we’ll be voting on.”
2) Both will jump in front of the cameras and lambast the DNC leadership (particularly Nancy) for refusing to “negotiate” on the matter, saying that a hardline “No” is hurtful to the American people.
3) The DNC will hold fast (though Chuck may waver), forcing the GOP to whip the fuck out of their caucuses and try to offer a few trinkets to Blue Dog Dems to get the votes to put the bill on Donny’s desk.
4) The whips will take a count and realize they don’t have the votes to pass the bills, forcing another round of bleating from the GOP about how the DNC are hurting Americans by refusing to “negotiate” and that this is totally un-American.
5) Finally, either Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning, a race will begin to fashion together stop-gap bills that will push the whole thing out another month or 2, just to get past the holidays, with assurances that they’re not abandoning the fight for the wall funding but just avoiding a painful shutdown that “nobody wants.”
6) The bills get passed at the 11th hour and rushed to Donny’s desk, he bullshits his way into signing them, and the media that has spent weeks talking up the direness of the situation assure folks the crisis has passed…for now.

And I find that troubling for a society.
So many people are willing to buy some of the most ridiculously thin conspiracy thinking. And they have to be opened up to do that. Is it education, the lack thereof? Is it churches teaching not to trust our institutions? I just don’t know why this works.

They’re slinging everything they can, no matter how implausible, against the wall in the hopes that something will end up sticking and get them out of this mess. Plus, as Eric Boehlert noted the other day, Faux never handles being on the defensive well. They’re only really equipped to attack and whenever they go on the defensive, their entire strategy is built around attacking any targets of opportunity they can find.

Wiki:
During the X-15 program, 13 flights by eight pilots met the Air Force spaceflight criterion by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80 km), thus qualifying these pilots as being astronauts. The Air Force pilots qualified for astronaut wings immediately, while the civilian pilots were eventually awarded NASA astronaut wings in 2005, 35 years after the last X-15 flight. The only Navy pilot in the X-15 program never took the aircraft above the requisite 50 mile (80 km) altitude and thus never earned astronaut wings.[3][4]

It was supposed to be a short burn, but as it turned out, it wasn’t—it was the full 60 seconds. Maybe they deliberately shallowed the climb, and they’ll go to 100 km on a later flight, I don’t know. And I know 50 miles is about 80% of the way there, but I think for a quarter-mil people are going to want to go into “space” by the international definition—especially since the New Shepard actually has reached that altitude.

Weekly recap (and it’s only Thursday…sigh):
1) Butina enters guilty plea implicating Russia, NRA, and GOP officials in Russian effort to manipulate NRA and GOP to further Russian agenda.
2) Cohen pleads guilty and allocutes to working with Trump on paying off two women and then using various measure to shield the payments from the FEC - namely engaging in money laundering and furthering a conspiracy to shield those payments from public scrutiny.
3) David Pecker announces immunity deal with prosecutors over his role in protecting Trump from scrutiny over those payoffs.
4) Trump Org is implicated in (2), which means that Eric, Junior, and Ivanka are likely implicated along with Trump himself- as board members and the ones above CFO Weisselberg, who also cut an immunity deal with prosecutors - you don’t give up deets on those below you - you turn on those above you. Where there’s one shady deal, there are a dozen more. Just you watch.
5) Manafort pleadings.
6) Flynn sentencing. And I know I’m missing stuff…. it’s exhausting trying to keep up with the batcrap insanity and nonstop criminality that is Trumpworld.
