Soledad y el Mar (En Manos de Los Macorinos) (La Fiesta Parte II)

En el canto de las olas
encontré un rumor de luz.
Por un canto de gaviotas
supe que ahí estabas tú.

Despidiendo últimamente
todo lo que sucedió,
hoy saludo mi presente;
gusto de este dulce adiós.

Voy a navegar en tu puerto azul,
quisiera saber de dónde vienes tú.
Vamos a dejar que el tiempo pare,
ver nuestros recuerdos en los mares
y esta soledad tan profunda.

Que en el canto de las olas
me quisiera sumergir,
embriagándome en su aroma;
algo nuevo descubrir.

Voy a navegar en tu puerto azul,
quisiera saber de dónde vienes tú.
Vamos a dejar que el tiempo pare,
ver nuestros recuerdos en los mares
y esta soledad tan profunda.

Que me cante el mar
un bolero de soledad.
Que me cante el mar,
que ando sola con soledad.

Que me cante el mar
un bolero de soledad.
Que me cante el mar,
que ando sola con soledad.

Soledad y el mar.

President Mike Pence is set to announce “concrete steps” and “clear actions” to address the Venezuela crisis when he meets on Monday with regional leaders in Bogota, Colombia, a senior U.S. administration official said.

SRSLY: THIS is Jacob’s next BFD “journalistic” “coup”.? Going to Minneapolis and trying to paint it as some sort of hotbed of jihadism - because of some “ISIS graffiti” he just happened to “find” on a wall somewhere? Which is supposed to impress us because he has Laura Loomer with him? In bulletproof vests? Right?

But he’s found some other wingnut doofus to front his tweets for him, so that will deal with his fundamental credibility issue (I.e. that he has none)?

For someone who claims he has a great instinct for science, Trump sure does things that are anti-scientific. Doing work in secrecy is kinda the opposite of doing science.

The men involved in this and in the Epstein case need to be identified, publicly humiliated, and imprisoned, especially for involvement with underage victims. Many are willing to flout laws unless they truly fear the consequences and believe that they are likely to be caught and face real punishment.

By the way, here’s an English translation of the lyrics to this beautiful song.

In the song of the waves
I found a rumour of light
Through a song of seagulls
I knew that you were there

Letting go of everything that’s happened lately
Today I greet my present with this sweet goodbye

I’m going to sail in your blue port
I’d like to know where you come from
Let us let time stop
See our memories in the seas
And this loneliness is so deep

That in the song of the waves i would like to submerge myself
Getting drunk on it’s aroma something new that i’ve discovered

I’m going to sail in your blue port
I’d like to know where you come from
Let us let time stop
See our memories in the seas
And this loneliness is so deep

Let the sea sing to me
A bolero of loneliness
Let the sea sing to me
I’ve been feeling alone with loneliness

Let the sea sing to me
A bolero of loneliness
Let the sea sing to me
I’ve been feeling alone with loneliness

so, I get a notice in the mail that it’s time to renew my driver’s license.
Kentucky has finally moved over to the RealID licenses and this is a freaking joke.

The documentation requirements are way more than I need to provide for a passport, to vote, to open a bank account, to get a Social Security number.

It is going to cost me close to $100 to get the license and required documentation. In addition to a certified birth certificate (from Kentucky, mind you!) I have to provide a freaking marriage license from more than 40 years and that husband has been dead for more than two decades, plus a Social Security card (apparently an SSA1099 isn’t good enough, although a current year W2 would be O_o), AND TWO PROOFS OF RESIDENCE (gee…wonder if the freaking postcard they sent to my current mailing address is good enough…)

And my “legal name” has to match every freaking document.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

This is ridiculous. And people who say that required documentation for voting isn’t extreme (especially for older women who have been voting for decades) can TAKE A FUCKING SEAT AND STFU.

I couldn’t even remember the actual date of my first marriage so I could request a certified copy from the Cook County Clerk’s office.
Good thing my 88-year-old mom is still alive (Happy Birthday today, mom!) and keeps track of all those things and could tell me.

My son, who moved to Kentucky last year as a grad student, got his passport specifically because of KY not being part of RealID (he needs it for other stuff, of course). Now they have it? I’ll have to tell him. I’m assuming he’d have to wait until he needs to renew his license.

I genuinely think the government ID system is purpose designed to fuck over women and transpersons. There’s no fucking reason that the courts can’t coordinate with birth certificate issuing authorities, allowing them to keep track of all changes instead of forcing people to keep additional docs.

I just got the postcard the other day. I think they are phasing it in. The RealID license itself costs $48 and is good for 8 years (IIRC). There’s a four-year option that is less expensive, I think.

re: #34 Backwoods_Sleuth

so, I get a notice in the mail that it’s time to renew my driver’s license.

I just recently renewed my passport and my driver’s license. All I had to do to renew the passport was send in my old passport and show my driver’s license, and then I renewed my driver’s license (and upgraded to RealID) by showing my passport. AND I LIVE IN A BORDER STATE!

At this point I am willing to say it’s practically a sure thing and cops and locals have to really be on guard.

When I enlisted in 1965 I was given an Air Force Serial Number. In 1969/70 it was changed to my SSAN. The last time I renewed my military id card it used an id card number instead of my SSAN. Not sure when that changed.

I’d just as soon have a passport instead because that’s good for domestic and foreign travel.
It’s just that there is no place reasonably nearby anymore where I can get a passport photo taken…I can do one of my own except the photo requirements are so stupid (I have to figure out a way to take a photo with a perfectly white background and it has to be without wearing my glasses…that should be fun to sort out). I’ll see if I can figure that out first and then just go with the cheaper regular KY driver’s license.

Take a photo without your glasses and ask someone to photoshop it onto a white background?

My grandma was born in 1916. Her birth certificate said her name was Madeline de Lima. Her actual name was Rose de Lima Madeline. She actually had to have her younger sister get a note notarized attesting to the fact that her little sister had only ever known her by Rose de Lima Madeline. Oh, and my grandfather’s birth certificate said Morris and it was actually Maurice. And he added the “O-apostrophe” to our last name. Weirdly, he didn’t have any problems.

So yeah, people who make the claim that it’s super easy for elderly folks to get all the required documentation to vote can suck it!

That’s fucked up. I had a CDL (which I relinquished this last time) and the only thing extra I needed in WI was a certified birth certificate which is capped at $25. So while a a new DL cost me about $100 with that, I could have gotten an otherwise free ID with that birth certificate.

We just need to get a real national ID and be done with and FU to any fundies that freak out. They can all just go to Coventry…

I have my original certified birth certificate in a fireproof box. I don’t want to ever have to pay for one. This is the original one my parents got when I was born and it is looking really haggard…kind of like me.

When I got divorced this second time, I went back to my maiden name. That’s my name and it will remain my name forever. It doesn’t matter if I get married again or not. I’m never changing it. If it means that much to any man ever again, he’s not worth marrying.

When I went to renew my driver’s license I showed my passport. Now, the name on my DL had my First Name, Maiden Name & Married Name. My passport has my First Name, Middle Name & Married Name. The clerk at the DMV asked me “Do you want your driver’s license name to match your passport?” And I’m like, yeah. And she’s like OK.

Wanna move here?

Even as all of Florida sinks into the sea they will still be clutching their bibles and expecting to be raptured.

A good way to fuck with them is to tell them that the rapture happened in 1033 and we’re simply coming up on the end of the 1000 years of tribulation and that everyone on earth now is doomed to hell. It really messes with some of them :D

re: #142 Joe Bacon 🌹

Honestly I never saw any reason that a woman had to change her last name when she got married. I always considered it a form of subjugation.

My first husband, though he insisted that we get married instead of living together, really didn’t understand why I would take his last name. I went back to maiden name when we got divorced. My second marriage, it was super important to him that I have his last name. Weird thing was that I had to help him get his last name changed before the wedding because he wanted to go to his mother’s maiden name and get rid of bio dad’s because he couldn’t stand the man. I told him it would be easier if he just took my name when we got married and then only one of us would have to change our name on all the paperwork. He wasn’t buying it.

We did the hyphenation thing. It made both of us have to do the name change thing (pain) but when we divorced, it simplified things by showing property ownership & etc clearly.

I remember when the whole birther crap was going on and people were going on and on about how the birth certificate was supposed to say “birth certificate,” and Obama’s was not a birth certificate because his said “certificate of live birth.” I don’t know how many assholes I argued with and told to pull out their own damn actual birth certificate and see that it said the same damned thing. I know mine did and I checked with friends and relatives who lived in other states. They all said “certificate of live birth” dating all the way back to 1915 to present.

I have to do that. I added the “ne” in 4th grade and every single piece of ID, including my passport, has Joanne. Except for social security. I need to legally change my first name, that I’ve used for more than 50 years.

My Social Security card, IRS records and high school diploma are in the name “Dena.” I had the cutesy idea of trying to make my name easier to pronounce at age nine. My legal name, and the one on every other official record, is “Deana.” I need to get my Social Security card fixed eventually.

It’s not quite the issue my parents faced when my dad got near to retirement. Their marriage license had never been filed in California, so they weren’t legally married until I was nearly 13 years old and we moved to Texas, where common law marriages are recognized. They went down to the courthouse when I was 36 and got a “Certificate of Informal Partnership,” backdated to the day of their California wedding, because my 5’2” mother leaned over the counter and told the clerk that the only wedding day she recognized was in 1959. Then the Certificate of Informal Partnership got lost in the mail. They finally got a replacement. At the end of this story, my mother confessed that she’d misspelled my name on my birth certificate.

I go by Dee pretty much everywhere these days.

TN starts issuing Real ID-compliant licenses/IDs in July and my DL comes up for renewal next January, but, fuck it, I’m about ready to just apply for my first-ever US passport (actually, probably just a passport card, which is valid for almost the same things as a full-sized US passport, like access to federal facilities and for boarding domestic flights, except it isn’t valid for international flights or travel outside the immediate Western Hemisphere) as a backup, in case the TN Department of Safety’s Real ID rollout goes pear-shaped.

re: #217 makeitstop

Charlie Pride was there way before Darius.

Country’s original Man in Black, before Johnny Cash.

Looking at Pride’s wiki, I found out a lot I didn’t know about him:

When Pride was 14, his mother purchased him his first guitar and he taught himself to play.[5] Though he loved music, one of Pride’s lifelong dreams was to become a professional baseball player. In 1952, he pitched for the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League. In 1953 he signed a contract with the Boise Yankees, the Class C farm team of the New York Yankees. During that season, an injury caused him to lose the “mustard” on his fastball, and he was sent to the Yankees’ Class D team in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Later that season, while in the Negro Leagues with the Louisville Clippers, another player (Jesse Mitchell) and he were traded to the Birmingham Black Barons for a team bus. “Jesse and I may have the distinction of being the only players in history to be traded for a used motor vehicle,” Pride mused in his 1994 autobiography.[8]

He pitched for several other minor league teams, his hopes of making it to the big leagues still alive, but the Army derailed this. After serving two years in the military, he tried to return to baseball.[8] Though hindered by an injury to his throwing arm, Pride played three games for the Missoula Timberjacks of the Pioneer League[9] (a farm club of the Cincinnati Reds) in 1960,[10] and had tryouts with the California Angels (1961) and the New York Mets (1962) organizations, but was not picked up by either team.[10][11]

When he was laid off by the Timberjacks, he moved to work construction in Helena, Montana, in 1960. He was recruited to pitch for the local semipro baseball team, the East Helena Smelterites, and the team manager helped him get a job at the local Asarco lead smelter.[9] The lead smelter kept 18 jobs open specifically for baseball players, and arranged their shifts so they could play as a team.[6] Pride batted .444 his first year.[9]

Pride’s singing ability soon came to the attention of the team manager, who also paid him to sing for 15 minutes before each game, which increased attendance and earned Pride another $10 on top of the $10 he earned for each game. He also played gigs in the local area, both solo and with a band called the Night Hawks,[6] and Asarco asked him to sing at company picnics.[9] His job at the smelter was dangerous and difficult; he once broke his ankle. He routinely unloaded coal from railroad cars, shoveling it into a 2,400 °F furnace while keeping clear of slag, a task which frequently gave him burns. In a 2014 interview, Pride explained, “I would work at the smelter, work the swing shift and then play music,” said Pride. “I’d work 11-7. Drive. Play Friday. Punch in. Drive. Polson. Philipsburg.”[5]

Between his smelter job and his music, he made a good living in the Helena area. He moved his wife and son to join him and they lived in Helena until 1967, purchasing their first home there, and with their children Dion and Angela being born at the local hospital.[9] The Pride family moved to Great Falls, Montana, in 1967,[5] because Pride’s music career was taking off and he required quicker access to an airport.[9] The family ultimately left Montana and moved to Texas in 1969.[6] In a 1967 interview with the Helena Independent Record, Rozene commented that the family encountered minor racism in Montana, citing an incident where they were refused service in a restaurant and another time when a realtor refused to show them a home, but she felt that the family endured less racism than she saw leveled against local Native American people, whose treatment she compared to that given to black people in the South.[6] Pride has generally spoken with fondness of the near-decade he spent there. “Montana is a very conservative state…I stood out like a neon. But once they let you in, you become a Montanan. When the rumor was that I was leaving. They kept saying, ‘we will let you in, you can’t leave.’”[9]

On June 5, 2008, Pride and his brother Mack “The Knife” Pride and 28 other living former Negro League players were “drafted” by each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams in a recognition of the on-field achievements and historical relevance of 30 mostly forgotten, Negro-League stars. Pride was picked by the Texas Rangers, with whom he has had a long affiliation, and the Colorado Rockies took his brother.[12][13]

Meanwhile, over at Redstate, a particularly loathsome troll who goes by the handle of “streiff” is basically dissing the fuck out of women who serve in combat.

Seriously.

A small number of women. Have to be wet-nursed.

Please share this with women vets you know, and let them know how much you actually appreciate the fact that they served. That they cared enough about their country to put themselves in harm’s way to defend it.

And that shitmouths like Mr. streiff do NOT represent how decent, patriotic Americans feel about women who have courage, honor, and don’t need any wet-nursing from some weak suck to stand on their own hind legs and punch his fucking lights out.

Please make this go viral. Relatives of mine have served with honor and distinction, and this one really gets under my skin.

Does “streiff” pretend to be “Pro-Israel”? Women have been serving in combat in the IDF for 70 years.

Not only is Streiff suffering under some serious misconceptions about women, he isn’t acknowledging the subtext of keeping women out of the military, that they can’t be equal citizens. Citizen-soldier cuts both ways. The military is raised from the civilian population, but you can’t be a full citizen without being at least eligible to be a soldier. I believe the Swiss used that excuse to keep women from voting for many, many years.

Not just served, but drafted. My friend from Ra’anana started to gently lose her shit as her first daughter approached 18.

I am duly grateful that we didn’t have a draft while my son was eligible. He and the military would not have been a good fit. Even in peacetime. I have no idea how things would go in an actual war.

Thanks for the discussion! I have to renew my driver license this spring, so I had to do a little sleuthing (gettin’ the ball rollin’ our beloved Backwoods_Sleuth!) and I found out: In Colorado you need a valid or expired-less-than-one-year driver license (check), proof of Social Security Number (check), proof of residency - bank statement, utility bill, etc. - (check), and $28. I can even do it online!

That’s one thing my son will never worry about - even if the Russians were invading NYC, he’d be 4F (or whatever) with his mental health issues.

I’ve ridden a road bike from Steamboat Springs to about 15 miles from the Wyoming border (about a 60 mile ride round trip) on Elk River Road. That is a very charming and beautiful river valley in Colorado.
